Ascension 0.3

Ascension 0.3

Ascension is a KDE email client. more>>
Ascension is my attempt at an email client. It makes use of the KDE libraries, so you will need KDE installed if you wish to use it (works with 3.2, might work with 3.1). Although the code is still in alpha, I have been using it as my main email client for over a year.
If you wish to try it, you would be sensible to backup your email first. Using imap should be relatively safe, but pop3 and Unix (local) mailboxes have not been so extensively tested. I take no responsibility for any loss of data while using this program. Ascension has only been tested under Linux.
The current version supports:
- IMAP (not SSL) mailboxes.
- Pop3 (not SSL) mailboxes.
- Unix mailboxes.
- Viewing of HTML messages (no HTML composing).
- Limited searching of headers.
- Dockable parts.
- Fonts and colours are configurable, as is much of the behvaiour.
Still to do:
- Support SSL connections (probably requires a rewrite of a good portion of the mailbox subsystem).
- PGP and S/MIME support.
- Virtual folders.
- A ton of ideas yet to come.
Enhancements:
- This is the first public release

Kaspaliste 0.96

Kaspaliste 0.96

Kaspaliste is a literature database for Linux/KDE. more>>
Kaspaliste is a knowledge database which handles all types of books, articles, journals, webpages, etc.
This program is BETA software! It is based on a reliable database server, so complete data loss is not very likely. But other (hopefully minor) problems may occur. BACKUP YOUR DATABASE FRREQUENTLY AND KEEP OLD BACKUPS! I think its obvious: Im not a native english speaker. Corrections are welcome.
Kaspaliste is a literature database. It handles all kinds of books, articles, journals, webpages etc. The database goes beyond storing bibliographical information. There is the possibility to create annotated links between pieces of information (like the content of a book chapter) and to group links into categories.
The user interface works just like a web browser: You may follow the links to open records. You may walk back and forward through previously edited records, change fields, and create or delete links, publication, authors etc. on the fly with just one mouseclick.
Kaspaliste does not only store pieces of information about publications. It stores files as well. Kaspaliste handels various formats like html, pdf, ps, dvi and pictures (depends on your KDE-installation since the kpart-technology is used). You can for example store ocred parts of interesting publications. The fulltext search covers these files.
Another feature is the automatic generation of BibTex files.
Enhancements:
- circumvents a bug in the pdf-KPart.
- bugfix release for kde 3.2

Potracegui 1.3.4

Potracegui 1.3.4

Potracegui is a GUI interface for potrace and autotrace two programs for tracing bitmapped images. more>>
Potracegui is a GUI interface for potrace and autotrace, two programs for tracing bitmapped images.
It really doesnt do much, all the dirt work is done by potrace and autotrace, my app is simply an interface: it collects informations in an easy way (hopefully) and then it launches potrace or autotrace with all the relevant options.
Potrace and autotrace, on the contrary, are great apps for tracing so that they can be scaled, rotated, and transformed in general, without loss of quality.
Well, using a GUI sometimes is more comfortable (particularly if working with images), even if Im a strong supporter of command-line programs. On the other hand, Potracegui (thanks to Jakub Stachowski) can now load remote files (web, ftp...), use any image format recognized by KDE (potrace uses only a few bitmapped formats) and support drag and drop.
Installation:
Potracegui is installed with the usual:
./configure
make
su
make install
Installation on SuSE linux + kde 3.1 or KDE 3.2
If you are using SuSE, you have to specify to configure the directory where KDE is installed (/opt/kde3):
./configure --prefix=/opt/kde3
make
su
make install
Installation on Mandrake 9.2 with KDE3.2:
If you are using Mandrake and NVIDIA drivers, you have to consider two problems before compiling Potracegui:
Potracegui expects to find the library /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.la, but in this distribution the library is installed in /usr/lib/libGL.la. All you have to do is symlink it:
cd /usr/X11R6/lib
ln -s /usr/lib/libGL.la .
Enhancements:
- Quick bugfix: deleted debug() method from options.cpp

DV Video Assembler 0.93

DV Video Assembler 0.93

DV Video Assembler allows you to append multiple Sony DV files. more>>
This application is particularly useful for owners of digital DV video cameras and other people who use the Sony DV video format for high quality video production.

DV Assembler allows you to append multiple Sony DV files with nice looking transition effects for both audio and video. Multiple transition effects are supported, like cross-fade, zoom, blur and a flash effect.

I created DV Assembler because there are no user friendly video editing applications for Linux. Yes, Kino is promising, but its user interface is still a mess and development is slow.

DV Assembler only touches the head and tail parts of the original video files that are needed to create the transition effects. The rest of the video is left untouched, which means zero quality loss.

DV Assembler can also be used to generate video editing scripts that can be run without KDE and Kommander.

SR-RTP 0.1b

SR-RTP 0.1b

SR-RTP library enables real-time streaming applicationsto cope with packet loss, variable bandwidth etc. more>>
The SR-RTP library enables real-time streaming applications (such as streaming MPEG-4 video) to cope with packet loss, variable bandwidth, and variable delay on the Internet.

It provides a means for selective retransmission of lost packets in a fashion that is backwards-compatible with RTP. Additionally, it provides integration with the Congestion Manager to provide a system capable of performing TCP- friendly streaming of real-time data.

Installation:

The `configure shell script attempts to guess correct values for various system-dependent variables used during compilation.

It uses those values to create a `Makefile in each directory of the package. It may also create one or more `.h files containing system-dependent definitions.

Finally, it creates a shell script `config.status that you can run in the future to recreate the current configuration, a file `config.cache that saves the results of its tests to speed up reconfiguring, and a file `config.log containing compiler output (useful mainly for debugging `configure).

If you need to do unusual things to compile the package, please try to figure out how `configure could check whether to do them, and mail diffs or instructions to the address given in the `README so they can be considered for the next release.

If at some point `config.cache contains results you dont want to keep, you may remove or edit it.

The file `configure.in is used to create `configure by a program called `autoconf. You only need `configure.in if you want to change it or regenerate `configure using a newer version of `autoconf.

The simplest way to compile this package is:

1. `cd to the directory containing the packages source code and type `./configure to configure the package for your system. If youre using `csh on an old version of System V, you might need to type `sh ./configure instead to prevent `csh from trying to execute
`configure itself.

Running `configure takes awhile. While running, it prints some messages telling which features it is checking for.

2. Type `make to compile the package.

3. Optionally, type `make check to run any self-tests that come with the package.

4. Type `make install to install the programs and any data files and documentation.

5. You can remove the program binaries and object files from the source code directory by typing `make clean. To also remove the files that `configure created (so you can compile the package for a different kind of computer), type `make distclean.

There is also a `make maintainer-clean target, but that is intended mainly for the packages developers. If you use it, you may have to get all sorts of other programs in order to regenerate files that came with the distribution.

IRC BotNET 1.0

IRC BotNET 1.0

BotNET is an IRC bot that has two modes: stand-alone and BotNET mode. more>>
IRCBotNET is a Botnet. It is a network of IRC bots that communicate with one another. They share a means of communication whereby all bots speak to one another and exchange information. They are useful for keeping and maintaining a channel by acting as a group of channel bots that work together with a common goal.

Say, for instance, you have one IRC bot keeping a channel and a netsplit occurs or the bot dies for some reason. Immediately the channel becomes chaotic and anarchic without an IRC bot keeping the peace. With a Botnet, even if an IRC bot dies, here still remains the rest of the bots on the Botnet to continue maintaining the channel and the loss of the one bot means nothing as the other bots do its exact same job.

BotNET is an extremely powerful IRC BOT and has many features.
BotNET doesnt necessarily have to run as a Botnet, it can run as a normal IRC bot and in fact does this by default. It has a massive collection of functions that can be seen in the BotNET man pages. When run as a Botnet, BotNET has supreme capabilities that have never been attempted before in Botnets. When a BotNET bot is run in Botnet mode, it connects to a BotNET Communication Stream Server (botserv) that is included in this package.

It uses this server to communicate with the other bots on the Botnet. The difference here is that not only can it do whatever any other Botnet can do, but it also uses this stream of communication with its added IRC Stand-alone bot functionality. For instance, if you add a user to the bot, immediately, all other bots connected to the database add this user to their local databases and a global-wide Botnet database is maintained. So you can use any one of the bots on the Botnets for anything that you so desire. This powerful feature makes BotNET very predominant over other Botnets.

DupeFinder 1.0.2

DupeFinder 1.0.2

DupeFinder is a simple application for locating, moving, renaming, and deleting duplicate files in a directory structure. more>>
DupeFinder is a simple application for locating, renaming, moving and deleting duplicate files in a directory structure.
Its perfect both for users who havent kept their hard drives very well organized and need to do some cleaning to free space, and for users who like to keep lots of backup copies of important data "just in case" something bad should happen.
Main features:
Although DupeFinder is a quite small application, it should have all of the features you will need to remove and reorganize large directories full of duplicate files:
- Well designed graphical interface with full tooltip and "Whats This?" question button support, useful in an application which you probably wont need to use frequently
- Quick processing by eliminating analysis of unwanted data through file extension filtering
- View files in external applications by double-clicking
- Rename files in place or move to new locations
- Default settings disallow deletion of all copies of duplicate files to prevent accidental data loss
- Generate simple reports identifying groups of duplicate files for later processing
While everything works pretty well in most cases, there are a few issues with DupeFinder to be aware of. I hope to fix most of the following bugs sometime soon:
- May crash if files containing "~" or ":" characters are encountered
- May crash if self referencing symlinks are encountered
- Zero byte files cannot be deleted
- May not be able to delete files with Unicode characters in filename
- Display does not update if identified duplicates are moved, renamed or modified external to DupeFinder

Berkley Snoop for Linux 0.3 RC4

Berkley Snoop for Linux 0.3 RC4

Berkley Snoop for Linux is a module which adds support for the Snoop protocol. more>>
Berkley Snoop for Linux is a module which adds support for the Snoop protocol, a TCP-aware link layer protocol designed that can improve the performance of TCP over networks of wired and single-hop wireless links.
While TCP adapts well to network congestion, it does not adequately handle the vagaries of wireless media. In this thesis, we address these challenges in detail and design solutions to them. These solutions incorporate link-layer techniques as well as enhancements to TCP at the sender and receiver. The Snoop protocol is a TCP-aware link layer protocol designed to improve the performance of TCP over networks of wired and single-hop wireless links.
The implementation is for kernels of 2.6.x series. This software is intended to use on routers acting between big fat pipe(BFP) link and wireless link.
The problem: The wireless link is error prone by its nature and BFP links such as satellite one has very big round-trip time. When error occurs on wireless segment it causes in speed reduction because the TCP protocol on sending side treats this error as link congestion although the error was just a temporary link quality loss and the connection cannt recover its speed.
The fix: The module will cache TCP segmets passing to host on wireless segment until the ACK(nowledgmet) is received or timeout expired. In case of timeout the segment will be retransmitted again. And by the way the module will drop all DUP(licate) ACK(nowledgmets) caused by packet loss on wireless segment and prevent the reduction of speed of flow from the host beyond the satellite link. The module works now only with connections initiated from wireless hosts.
Enhancements:
- fixed issues with improper use of locks & memory allocation the memory allocates now with GFP_ATOMIC priority
