Luxor 1.0b9

Luxor 1.0b9

Luxor is an open-source XML User Interface Language (XUL) toolkit in Java. more>>
Luxor is a free, open-source XML UI Language (XUL) toolkit in released under the GNU General Public License (GPL) that lets you build UIs using XML and includes an ultra-light weight, multi-threaded web server, a portal engine, a template engine (Velocity), a scripting interpreter (Python) and more.

XUL stands for XML UI Language and was pioneered by Mozilla. XUL is superior to API-based UI toolkits such as Swing or WinForms because it clearly separates the user interface into four parts:

- content (structure and description of UI elements),
- appearance (look & feel, skin, themes),
- behavior (scripting) and
- locale (localization information for internationalization)

Content is best described in XUL as the following short example illustrates.

XUL makes UI building easier because it is far simpler than hard-wiring it in Java. XUL also frees you from the Swing toolkit lock-in because you can create a new rendering engine using a different UI toolkit such as KDE, Gnome, or WinForms.

GoodGoat Linux 1.2

GoodGoat Linux 1.2

Goodgoat is an easy to use desktop that can run from a bootable cd or it can be installed to the hard drive. more>>
Goodgoat is an easy to use desktop that can run from a bootable cd or it can be installed to the hard drive.

Goodgoat uses portage to handle updates for the installed version. I started goodgoat as an os for my low cost computer. I thought that the Linux I had created would be useful to other people.

I have hand picked the best of breed applications and left an easy to use desktop. I start with xfce4 which is light weight and easy to use. I added firefox, evolution for email, openoffice and many other applications.

Some highlights of the system is that it has all the regular desktop application, video and audio player, and auto configuration of the network and x windows setup.

For the system administrators I have added iscsi server and client tools. You can run /etc/init.d/iscsi-target start and you are sharing hd0. Goodgoat has qemu which is the poor mans vmware only it works better if you ask me (compressed filesystem).

To install goodgoat all you need to do is install the cd version (iso file) and use the installer in the prefs menu. Some parts of the installer take a few minutes but as long as the firefox circle is spinning you just have to wait until the installer finishes. While you wait you can open a new tab or a new window and browse the web or play one of the many games included in goodgoat.

Why should you use goodgoat? Its fast and everything you need is right at your finger tips. Goodgoat works well on older computers and doesnt need a lot of memory. Goodgoat works with desktops laptops, and wifi.

If you like gentoo all you have to do is install goodgoat and run su -; emerge sync from the xterm and you have a gentoo system. I add a few additional applications that are not included with gentoo and I installed newer applications than gentoo supports by default.

Goodgoat is about as easy to install as it gets. The installer is simple in function and easy to use.

subPersistence 0.10.0

subPersistence 0.10.0

subPersistence is an abstract, light-weight, yet flexible framework for working with O/R persistence mappers. more>>
subPersistence is an abstract, light-weight yet flexible framework for working with O/R persistence mappers. It provides for independence of a specific O/R mapper such as Hibernate or Castor.
While you can use Hibernate or Castor (or other O/R mappers) directly, coupling your application too tightly to those can be a bad thing. subPersistence makes it easy to switch underlying O/R mappers, thereby decoupling the application layer from those.
It abstracts away differences between the mappers, while still making it possible to use their specific features if needed.
Enhancements:
- This version updates to Java 5 features such as Generics and is the first version to require Hibernate 3.

X/OS Linux 4.0

X/OS Linux 4.0

X/OS Linux is a GNU/Linux distribution for business and enterprise users. more>>
X/OS Linux is derived from the Free/Open Source rpm packages of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 (RHEL4) under the requirements set forth by their trademark policy.

X/OS has spent considerable effort to avoid using Red Hats trademarks in any way that would imply an association with or sponsorship by Red Hat.

After some delay, the final release of X/OS Linux 4.0 is now available to the public.

The X/OS Linux team has spent considerable effort to assure the label enterprise-grade Linux for this milestone release. With the simultaneous availability of X/OS Linux 4.0 for x86 and x86_64 processor architectures, it delivers the latest “best-of-breed” Free and Open Source software for both 32- and 64-bit platforms.

Highlights include the 2.6 Linux kernel featuring numerous enhancements over the previous 2.4 version, Security Enhanced Linux (SELinux) to apply more granular security policies, improved storage capabilities supporting file systems of up to 8TB and more.

The Global File System (GFS) and Cluster Suite software is included in this release to ease the task of creating and managing advanced cluster configurations, and is available as an extra option during installation. This powerful set of tools provides seamless scalability of applications such as databases, web servers and high-performance computing clusters — with GFS enabling nodes to simultaneously read and write to a single shared filesystem.

Next to providing an advanced server platform, X/OS Linux 4.0 adds various enhancements to the desktop — increasing usability with greatly improved office productivity tools, plug-and-play USB device recognition and power management supporting the ACPI standard.

In addition to compatibility with the de facto distribution for deploying Linux in the enterprise, X/OS Linux strides to include various other useful packages and tools that conform to the standard for mature and robust “enterprise-grade” software. One example is Xfce, an extra option in addition to Gnome and KDE, offering a light-weight desktop environment suited for use on low-end or thin client systems.

Light Hawk 0.6

Light Hawk 0.6

Light Hawk is a Jabber client with a focus on KDE integration. more>>
Light Hawk is a KDE Jabber client. It is unfinished, but I have been using it every day for some time now.
Those interested in following or helping development should use GNU arch 1.2 or later. My archive is neil@hakubi.us--terminus and is available at http://www.hakubi.us/arch/terminus/. The branch to get is lighthawk--mainline.
To compile the arch version of Light Hawk you will also need to get neil@hakubi.us--terminus/admin--KDE-3-0-BRANCH and symlink that into the top level of lighthawk as "admin".
After that its mostly an ordinary KDE application (run gmake -f Makefile.cvs to get a configure script). You must run that configure script in a separate directory, though, arch to cooperate later.
Main features:
- Roster management
- Subscriptions
- Chat messages
- Receving normal messages
- Multiple user profiles
- Session management cooperation
- Logging
- KNotify support (including sounds)
- Invisible status
- Away messages
- IPv6, Proxies, and other KDE network features

eximspamy 0.2

eximspamy 0.2

eximspamy is a low maintenance, light weight spam filter system. more>>
eximspamy is a spam filter framework that uses exims perl extension.

It is supposed to be solution which requires no maintenance and will use only very little cpu power. I am using this on a pentium 100 Mhz server with no problems.

eximspamy processes or rejects the mail in one go. That is: the mail does not run twice through exim as with most other mail filter systems.

Exim offers the possibility to execute perl subroutines from filter files.

To use this feature you must specify a file which contains perl subroutines in the exim.conf file:

perl_startup = do /etc/exim/exim.pl

and you need to have a version of exim which had perl support enabled at compile time
in the file:

add the line

EXIM_PERL=perl.o

in

Local/Makefile

of the exim source tree.

In the system filter (normally system_filter.exim) you can use those perl subroutines
to execute various tests on any line of the header (e.g $header_subject: $header_from:) or even the message body ($message_body)

eximspamy uses the following idea to catch the spam: you need to setup one user to which you re-direct all spam-traps.

That is old accounts which are no longer used and catch only spam or special seeds which you spread on webpages to catch only spam (use e.g white font on white background so that normal users do not see them).

All mail which is sent to the spamtrap is run through a filter which will take a checksum on the subject line. Those checksums are stored in a file (/usr/local/spamy/tmp/sums.txt)

Any mail coming into your system will then be checked against the known "spam" checksums in /usr/local/spamy/tmp/sums.txt.

In other words you compute again a checksum on the subject line and then you check if this checksum is already known. If it is known then you consider it spam.

Scriptix 0.31

Scriptix 0.31

Scriptix is a light-weight extension language. more>>
Scriptix has but several goals for its existance. First, it must be easy to program in. I originally decided that, for this purpose, a BASIC-like syntax would be best. However, it appears that people find familiarity to be more important - so versions of Scriptix from 0.19 onward will have a C/C++-like syntax. Scriptix parser can be quite easily re-written to handle almost any syntax desired, however.
Second, Scriptix must be threadable, allowing semi-syncronous execution of threads within a single OS process. Both pre-emptive and cooperative multi-tasking should be available. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, and the embedding application should be able to decide on the best method for the task. While pre-emptive multi-tasking is currently supported, it is still rudimentary, and basic thread control types (mutexes, etc.) are not yet implemented.
Third, it must support a decent subset of high-level language features, such as arrays, classes, and user-definable data types. The language itself does not provide for a large amount of definable functionality - the user scripts are somewhat limited in the scope of effect they can have on the language (in regards to defining functions/classes, etc.) This limits the negative effects a poorly written or malicious script can have on the host application.
Fourth, Scriptix must be of decent speed. As Scriptix is designed for interactive entertainment software (a.k.a. games), speed is very important. Ive no benchmarks yet to display hard-data on Scriptix speed - simple tests have shown it to easily outperform more popular scripting languages, however.
Scriptix makes use of a garbage collection scheme for memory management. Lots of people think this means it will be very slow. On the contrary, a clever garbage management system can result in a more responsive application, since memory deallocation can be controlled to a large degree. However, Scriptix does not (yet) have a clever scheme. It is planned to be greatly improved before 1.0, however.
Enhancements:
- Minor API and languages changes.
- Last independent release of Scriptix.
- Future releases will be part of the AweMUD package.

Anti-Web httpd 3.0.7

Anti-Web httpd 3.0.7

Anti-Web httpd is a small, robust, and secure Web server. more>>
Anti-Web project is a single-process, light-weight, non-threaded webserver that emphasizes simplicity, efficiency, and security.
AW 3 is the result of a rewrite of the webservers internals and represents much thought, effort, and careful design by the AW team.
With a few (perhaps signifigant) exceptions, AW 3 should be drop in compatible with AW 2. To use this drop in compatibility, refer to the "Simple Configuration" section. If you want to use some of AW 3s more advanced features, refer to the "Complex Configuration" section.
Your rights to use, distribute, and modify AW are protected by the GNU GPL license. Please see the file COPYING for more details.
Compilation
You should be able to compile AW simply by extracting it, changing into the extracted directory and typing
make
If all goes well, you should end up with an executable called "awhttpd".
If all does not go well, check the top of the file Makefile for compilation options. You will need to do this for a SunOS compilation, for instance.
Enhancements:
- Some extra CGI functionality was added.

Conky 1.4.1

Conky 1.4.1

Conky is a light-weight system monitor. more>>
Conky is a light-weight system monitor.
Conky is a system monitor for X originally based on the torsmo code. Since its original conception, Conky has changed a fair bit from its predecessor.
Conky can display just about anything, either on your root desktop or in its own window. Conky has many built-in objects, as well as the ability to execute programs and scripts, then display the output from stdout.
We are always looking for help, and anyone interested in becoming a developer is welcome. Please use the facilities at SourceForge to make bug reports, feature requests, and submit patches.
Installation:
For users compiling from source, make sure you have the X development libraries installed. This should be a package along the lines of "libx11-dev or xorg-x11-dev".
Gentoo users -- Conky is in Gentoos Portage... simply use "emerge app- admin/conky" for installation. There is also usually an up-to-date ebuild within Conkys package or in CVS.
Debian, etc. users -- Conky will be in Debians repositories soon (by mid-September, hopefully), and then Ubuntu shortly thereafter. Until then, "dpkg -i" the .deb package to install.
Example to compile and run Conky with all optional components (note that some configure options may differ for your system):
sh autogen.sh # Only required if building from CVS
./configure --prefix=/usr --mandir=/usr/share/man
--infodir=/usr/share/info --datadir=/usr/share --sysconfdir=/etc
--localstatedir=/var/lib --enable-xft --enable-seti --enable-dou-
ble-buffer --enable-own-window --enable-proc-uptime --enable-mpd
--enable-mldonkey --enable-x11 --enable-portmon
make
make install # Optional
src/conky
Conky probably doesnt compile with compilers other than gcc and icc. It doesnt compile with C89 compiler and not even with pure C99. It uses a few things that might not exist: strdup(), strcasecmp(), strn-casecmp(), optarg variable with getopt() and long long (not in C89). Crashes in file system statistics stuff when compiled with icc, I dont know exactly why.
You can disable drawing to own window feature in case you dont need it by passing --disable-own-window to configure -script.
Enhancements:
- FreeBSD cpu info patch
- Fixed issue where some WMs dont control conky own_window windows.
- Added newly-updated vim file detection and syntax hilighting files to svn.
- Fixed issue with graphs resetting colours (sf.net bug #1420473)
- Fixed battery problems when charged
- MPD code handles broken pipe now, instead of just killing conky
- Switch from CVS to SVN. Thanks SourceForge.
- Added patch to make $cpu stuff work on alpha (thanks Thomas Cort) http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=122637#c3
- Stop using override_redirect true -- conky back under WM control when using own_window yes.
- Fixed texeci breakage when forking to background is on
- Drastically simplified own_window=yes window creation code.
- on_bottom and wm_class_name deprecated (they do nothing)
- Fixed typo bug in portmon code that caused incorrect monitor data to be displayed.
