GTK+ is a multi-platform toolkit for creating graphical user interfaces. Offering a complete set of widgets, GTK+ is suitable for projects ranging from small one-off projects to complete application suites.

GTK+ is free software and part of the GNU Project. However, the licensing terms for GTK+, the GNU LGPL, allow it to be used by all developers, including those developing proprietary software, without any license fees or royalties.

GTK+ is based on three libraries developed by the GTK+ team:

- GLib is the low-level core library that forms the basis of GTK+ and GNOME. It provides data structure handling for C, portability wrappers, and interfaces for such runtime functionality as an event loop, threads, dynamic loading, and an object system.
- Pango is a library for layout and rendering of text, with an emphasis on internationalization. It forms the core of text and font handling for GTK+-2.0.
- The ATK library provides a set of interfaces for accessibility. By supporting the ATK interfaces, an application or toolkit can be used with such tools as screen readers, magnifiers, and alternative input devices.

GTK+ has been designed from the ground up to support a range of languages, not only C/C++. Using GTK+ from languages such as Perl and Python (especially in combination with the Glade GUI builder) provides an effective method of rapid application development.

Linux Commander is a powerful file manager for the X Window System.

It is partially modelled after Window Commander for Windows.

gtk-theme-prefs is a GTK+ theme manager, written using Gtk2-Perl. There are already a number of pure GTK+ theme managers.

This one differs from the others in that it fairly closely follows the GNOME HIG, and uses Glade.

Vqcc-gtk is a chat application written in C for the GTK+ toolkit, primarily used in small LANs. Based on quickChat/Vypress Chat (TM) for Windows (from Vypress Research) and is licensed under the GPL.

The application supports both quickChat and Vypress Chat(TM) protocols and hopefully is compatible enough to substitute those applications when using Linux, FreeBSD or another *NIX desktop. You need no server to run, however it is not possible to communicate outside your LAN (or subnet).

Those running KDE might be happier with VyQChat which is making nice progress too and looks more native to the users of KDE. Also there is a fine console (text mode) chat client eChat. It is compatible with both quickChat and VypressChat.

ed2k-gtk-gui is a graphical frontend (GUI) that allows you to control an eDonkey2000 command line client (core) running on the local machine or on a remote host. It is based on the GTK+ toolkit and the gnet library.

Mono SQL Sharp for GTK# is a GUI client for entering and running SQL commands and scripts. Database objects, such as, tables and table columns can be browsed.
Mono SQL Sharp for GTK Sharp is built for Mono 1.1.7 and GTK# 1.9.3 or higher. It works on Linux and Windows 2000/XP. It has support for various databases via Monos ADO.NET implementation and data providers.

Results can be shown in a grid or a text log. Files can be loaded into the SQL text editor or saved.
Mono SQL# for GTK# has a command-line version, sqlsharp.exe, which is included with Mono. Mono SQL# for GTK# is a separate project for the GTK# GUI version.

EuGTK is a GTK+ wrapper for the Euphoria programming language on the Linux/BSD/Win platforms.
Euphoria is an extremely fast and easy-to-use interpreted language. EuGTK is a wrapper which connects Euphoria to the GTK libraries, allowing rapid application development
on various platforms with little or no source code changes.
Euphoria/GTK code is very much simpler than the equivalent in most other languages.
