FrostWire 4.10.9 Beta

FrostWire 4.10.9 Beta

FrostWire is a Gnutella client according to the open standards of an international community. more>>
FrostWire is a community driven project based on source code released by LimeWire LLC to create and maintain a Gnutella client according to the open standards of an international community.

We are busy building a website and creating a new design for the FrostWire Gnutella client. Since LimeWire is a registered trademark we cannot distribute the client under its old name.

For that reason, we are looking for creative p2p fans that would like to create skins, design logos or websites. However we are also trying to get more people working on the Java core, the interface and the C++ windows installer (based on GnucDNA and NSIS). If you are interested in maintaining LimeWires legacy get involved!

We are trying to maintain good relations to the LimeWire project. The FrostWire team (all of whom are still members of the LimeWire open-source community) regrets LimeWires decision to start filtering content on Gnutella.

However, we will continue supporting LimeWire development and do not wish to make fundamental changes to the LimeWire core itself. FrostWire will not break with LimeWires design philosophy.

However the FrostWire project will never offer a PRO version. The FrostWire project will always remain strictly non-profit and free of any bundled software, including any ads or nags.

JVending 1.3.10a

JVending 1.3.10a

JVending is a P2P (JXTA) based mobile content provisioning system. more>>
JVending project bridges P2P networks and wireless delivery of content to mobile devices. Due to high latency of wireless connections, it is not practical to directly hook up the mobile devices to the peer network, so I have taken a different approach with JVending.

A user sets up a personal provisioning server on their PC and hooks it into the network. Through the P2P network, we create a federation of provisioning servers. The mobile devices use the federated provisioning servers as content portals.

JVending differs from P2P systems, such as Gnutella or "Project JXTA" reference implementation, in the following ways. JVending provides:

1. Catalog management
2. Device detection, which delivers the appropriate content based upon the type of browser or device
3. Web based browsing of content, so you can share with your friends on a wired or wireless network, after you have already collected the content.
4. The ability to search for and distribute packaged archives on the peer network.
5. Web links tying together the network.
6. PPG integration for pushing content to mobile devices.

For 2005 - 2006, the major goals of JVending (roughly in order of importance) are:

1. Expanding P2P support, including more in the area of wireless messaging (SMS)
2. JSR-124 compliance
3. Performance testing and monitoring capability
4. Multimedia server and J2ME support. This covers full integration between the MMS Client and the provisioning server.

Setting up the Environment

Follow these steps:

1. Make sure that you have J2SE 1.4.2 JDK installed. If not, go to http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/download.html and download and install the JDK (not JRE). I have not tested with J2SE 1.5 JDK, so it may or may not work with that version.
2. Download the jvending-standalone.zip file from the JVending project site.
3. Unzip the file into a directory of your choice, say /jvending
4. Set the JAVA_HOME environmental variable, depending on your OS. In windows, you can do this through the Control Panel/System/Advanced/Environmental Variable: JAVA_HOME =
EXAMPLE: JAVA_HOME=c:Programsj2sdk1.4.2_06

Starting JVending

1. Go to the bin directory and click on the run.bat (for windows) or run.sh for Unix.
2. The first time you start JVending, you will see a JXTA Configurator screen show up. Type in your user name and password/verify password. Click OK.
3. Wait 10 seconds for JVending to finish its startup sequence and then go to http://localhost:80/jvending/login. If you get a 404 error, wait a few more seconds and try again. Login ID/Password: admin/admin. Click "Submit Query" button. You will now see the JVending home page.

The Circle 0.41c

The Circle 0.41c

The Circle is an open source scalable decentralized peer to peer application. more>>
The Circle is an open source scalable decentralized peer to peer application. What does that mean? Well, theres no central authority running the show. No entry taxes either, no censorship, and (in theory) no weak point which can break the whole system.
No one even owns the source code. As long as there is one Circle peer running, anywhere in the world, theres still a network.
Main features:
- Share files
- Send instant messages and chat IRC-style
- Put together your own personalized, trust based news service
- Proxy Debian package downloads
The Circle is written in Python. It runs on Linux and Windows. (in fact, there is very little operating system specific code, so it will most likely work on any system that supports Python)
Scalability
At the core of the Circle is a decentralized hashtable, or "Chord". This table allows users to search for files in logarithmic time, based on keywords. This means that the Circle does not have the scalability problems of Gnutella style network (such as Kazaa, eDonkey), while also avoiding the need for a central server and therefore a single point of failure. Details of its operation are given in the "Technical Details" section below.
Privacy
The Circle does have the ability to post fully anonymous news a la Freenet. However, the file-sharing protocol isnt entirely anonymous. People will be able to work out your IP address.
In order to protect user privacy, the Circle includes a Digital Rights Management system. Although everybody can search your files by their keywords, you may choose which users are authorized to download them. An unauthorized third party has access only to the names of your files, not to their content. Needless to say, we expect you to use this system in order to prevent copyright infringement, while allowing private copy.
Note: If we become aware that you are trying to share snuff or child pornography, we will be able to work out your IP and from that your location and identity, and report you to the police and/or your ISP. Snuff and child pornography are things we think any reasonable person considers to be evil (its an issue quite separate from the debate over copyright).

Distributed Internet Backup System 0.92

Distributed Internet Backup System 0.92

Distributed Internet Backup System works by doing all its communication through email. more>>
Distributed Internet Backup System works by doing all its communication through email. The benefit of using email for transport is that clients behind firewalls or with intermittent connections to the Internet can use DIBS reliably.
Since disk drives are cheap, backup should be cheap too. Of course it does not help to mirror your data by adding more disks to your own computer because a virus, fire, flood, robbery, power surge, etc. could still wipe out your local data center.
Instead, you should give your files to peers (and in return store their files) so that if a catastrophe strikes your area, you can recover data from surviving peers. The Distributed Internet Backup System (DIBS) is designed to implement this vision.
Note that DIBS is a backup system not a file sharing system like Napster, Gnutella, Kazaa, etc. In fact, DIBS encrypts all data transmissions so that the peers you trade files with can not access your data.
Enhancements:
- Added Peer Finder service to allow advertising and automated exchange of peering information. See manual for details.
- Updated add_peer and edit_peer commands to allow sizes to be specified using k, m, g, t (e.g., 10k, 10m, 10g, 10t).
- Updated the protocol DIBS uses to exchange store, unstore, probe, and other messages between peers. The new protocol is XML based to allow easier debugging, parsing, and extensions.
- Fixed a deadlock bug reported by Jason Martin in a message to the dibs-discussion mailing list.
- Made the daemon run its periodic checks like spawnning auto_check, process_message, etc., as soon as it starts up.
- Other minor bug fixes and improvements

P4 0.3.1

P4 0.3.1

P4 is a self-organizing peer-to-peer overlay network library. more>>
P4 is a fully functional, self-organizing overlay network similar to >>Gnutella and >>Freenet. However, P4 differs in that it provides an API for developing plugin applications on top of the network.

P4 handles the networking and exports functionality for unicast, multicast, user and plugin discovery, and strong encryption and authentication. This frees developers from worrying about networking, and allows them to focus on building real functionality.

Since its release in early 2001, P4 has been surpassed by other general-purpose overlay platforms such as JXTA, Groove, and Microsofts Windows Peer-to-Peer SDK.

Furthermore, many other file sharing networks have long been superior to P4 in terms of routing algorithms, bandwidth management, anonymity, maturity, etc. (Theyre mostly dedicated file-sharing networks, though, not general-purpose networks.)

For these reasons, P4 is not currently as competitive as it was a few years ago. However, its still a viable alternative, especially if youre looking for a simple, lightweight, embeddable networking solution.
