CopyFS 1.0

CopyFS 1.0

CopyFS is a copy-on-write, versioned filesystem. more>>
CopyFS aims to solve a common problem : given a directory, especially one full of configuration files, or other files that one can modify, and which can affect the functionning of a system, or of programs, that may be important to other users (or to the user himself), how to be sure that a person modifying the files will do a backup of the working version first ?

This filesystem solves the problem by making the whole process transparent, automatically keeping versionned copies of all the changes done to file under its control.

It also allows a user to select an old version of the files, for example to repair a mistake, and allows him/her to continue edition from this point.

Brutal File Manager 1.2

Brutal File Manager 1.2

Brutal File Manager is a 3D FPS filemanager. more>>
Bfm, the Brutal File Manager is a combined file manager and first person shooter game. The basic idea is to represent different folders on your computer as rooms in a 3D environment.
Then, armed to your teeths you go through these rooms and delete files by shooting att them. Take a look at the screenshots section and youll see what its all about.
Bfm is written in Java and uses the hardware accelerated 3D library Java3D. That means that it should run on all platforms that have Java and Java3D. It is tested on Linux and Windows.
The whole thing started as a project in our programming class in school, and the development has continued even though we have graduated.
Bfm is released under the GNU General Public License.
Main features:
- A 3D environment with rooms generated from the file system, the walls are "doors" to other directories
- Files are represented by cylinders on the floor
- Weapons: currently a spear, a shotgun and a sniper rifle
- You can delete files using your weapons
- Secondary fire: you can zoom with the sniper rifle
- Walls are colored in different ways depending on different attributes
- The look of the files depend on various attributes, default color is blue, read only files are red, hidden files are transparent and files that have been hit turn yellow
- Its perfectly safe to use bfm strictly for entertainment by starting it in safe mode, files wont be removed from the hard drive but theyll still disappear in the 3D environment
- A head up display showing current directory, safe mode and a crosshair
- A config file reader
- Platform independent (since its written in Java), should run on all platforms with a Java and Java3D installation (for more details look at requirements)

Cube 2005-08-29

Cube 2005-08-29

Cube is an open source multiplayer and singleplayer first person shooter game. more>>
Cube is an open source multiplayer and singleplayer first person shooter game built on an entirely new and very unconventional engine.

Cube is a landscape-style engine that pretends to be an indoor FPS engine, which combines very high precision dynamic occlusion culling with a form of geometric mipmapping on the whole world for dynamic LOD for configurable fps & graphic detail on most machines. Uses OpenGL & SDL.

Allows in-engine editing of geometry in full 3D (you fly around the map, point / drag stuff to select it / modify it), which can even be done simultaneously with others in multiplayer (a first!). Has simplistic but effective fine grain vertex lighting that looks like lightmapping and can do dynamic lights & shadows.

Doesnt need any kind of map precompilation, even lighting is done on the fly. Has very simplistic quad-tree world structure that can do slopes (heightfields with caps) and slants, water, does decent collision detection & physics, has client/server networking that goes a long way in giving a lag-free game experience, and features a Doom/Quake-style singleplayer (2 game modes, savegames) and multiplayer (12 game modes, master server / server browser, demo recording) game with some uncompromising brutal oldskool gameplay.

Most of the engine design is targeted at reaching feature richness through simplicity of structure and brute force, rather than finely tuned complexity.

Image Database 2.1

Image Database 2.1

KDE Image Database (KimDaBa) is a tool for indexing, searching, and viewing images. more>>
If you are like me you have hundreds or even thousands of images ever since you got your first camera, some taken with a normal camera other with a digital camera.
Through all the years you believed that until eternity you would be able to remember the story behind every single picture, you would be able to remember the names of all the persons on your images, and you would be able to remember the exact date of every single image.
I personally realized that this was not possible anymore, and especially for my digital images - but also for my paper images - I needed a tool to help me describe my images, and to search in the pile of images. This is exactly what KimDaba is all about.
With KimDaBa it is today possible for me to find any image I have in less than 5 seconds, let that be an image with a special person, an image from a special place, or even both.
There is of course no such thing as free lunch - with KimDaBa this means that you have to annotate all your images before you are set. KimDaBa is, however, highly optimized for annotating images, so annotating 100 images in 10 minutes are no way impossible.
Enhancements:
- BUGFIX: Using kapp->invokeHelp to show help rather than kapp->invokeBrowser, as the later doesnt work unless your default browser is konqueror.
- BUGFIX: the category was sometimes shown twice in the status bar
- BUGFIX: remove tokens didnt work for KDE 3.4

Penny Pool 0.5.4

Penny Pool 0.5.4

Penny Pool is a small utility to ease the pooling of expenses. more>>
Penny Pool is a small utility to ease the pooling of expenses.
It facilitates the administration of many (small) shared expenses, which typically add up to significant amounts. It uses PHP/MySQL/Apache, and has an emphasis on easy installation.
A well-known problem in groups of people is how to distribute costs of collective payments. What usually happens is that one person pays and expects the rest of the group to then pay their respective shares to him / her. This is not a problem for a single incident, but when multiple events occur, with different persons paying, it would clearly be better to pool these events.
Payments can then be set up within the group, such that the number of money transfers is minimized.
PennyPool helps in administering these kinds of expenses in the form of a simple web application. First of all, the mere fact that expenses can be entered in a central location (to which everyone has access) makes it clear to everyone who should pay what. Furthermore, it is possible to group these expenses in settlements, which can be used as a starting point for actual payments among the members of the group.
These payments can also be entered and attached to the settlement. In this way, the progress of the settlement can be seen and it is obvious how much should still be paid.
The database only stores information that was entered directly. All presented data (e.g. balance) is calculated in real-time.
Precision is therefore limited by MySQL and/or PHP, only two decimal places are shown for readability. (this also means that the cents/pennies dont always add up, in which case a "miereneuker" should use the rounded cumulative result. As opposed to harassing me...)
Enhancements:
- It is now possible to bill participants multiple times. This makes it easy to use PennyPool even when some participants to an event are not registered users.

Aleph One/SDL 20051119

Aleph One/SDL 20051119

Aleph One/SDL is a 3D first-person action game, based on Bungies Marathon series. more>>
Aleph One is an Open Source 3D first-person shooter game, based on the game Marathon 2 by Bungie Software.
Aleph One was originally a Mac-only game, but there is now a cross-platform version based on the Simple DirectMedia Layer (SDL) library, that should in theory run on all systems supported by SDL (Linux, BeOS, Windows, Mac OS, Solaris, IRIX, *BSD, and others). Except for a few minor things, the port is complete and playable.
Installation
From a binary package
- Unix: If you are running Linux/i386 with XFree86 4.0 and OpenGL you can download and install the binary RPM (you will also need to install at least one of the AlephOne-M1A1, AlephOne-Marathon2 or AlephOne-Infinity RPMs). Otherwise, you have to compile Aleph One/SDL from the source (see the next section). In both cases, you have to have SDL >= 1.2.0 installed.
Note: If you are getting a message like
error: Failed dependencies:
libGL.so.1(LIBGL) is needed by AlephOne-20040417-1
while installing the RPM, try installing again with the --nodeps option. If this is the only failed dependency and you have OpenGL installed, the program should work.
Compiling from source
1. You will need to have the SDL library installed. Aleph One requires at least SDL 1.2.0. Note that if you didnt install SDL from source, you will also have to install the SDL-devel package.
2. Download the Aleph One/SDL source tarball, or get the source via CVS.
3. Under Unix, install Aleph One as follows:
$ ./configure
$ make
[become root]
# make install
Under BeOS, do this instead:
$ make -f Makefile.BeOS install
This will compile the source and create a directory AlephOne in your home directory that contains the AlephOne application and some data files.
2. Installing the data files
To play Aleph One, you will also need Marathon scenario (graphics, sound and map) data files. For your convenience, Ive created archives containing the data files from the now freely available Marathon (M1A1), Marathon 2 and Marathon Infinity scenarios, converted to the formats needed by the SDL version of Aleph One.
- Unix: Either download and install at least one of the AlephOne-M1A1, AlephOne-Marathon2 or AlephOne-Infinity RPM packages, or download one of the AlephOne-M1A1-1.0.tar.gz, AlephOne-Marathon2-1.0.tar.gz or AlephOne-Infinity-1.0.tar.gz tarballs and unexpand it to /usr/local/share/AlephOne/.
- BeOS: Download one of the AlephOne-M1A1-1.0.tar.gz, AlephOne-Marathon2-1.0.tar.gz or AlephOne-Infinity-1.0.tar.gz tarballs and unexpand it to the same directory as the AlephOne application.
The packages contain the files Images, Map, Map.resources, Music, Shapes, Sounds, some scripts, and the respective instruction manual in PDF format (from the original Mac version).
Playing Aleph One
First, be sure to read the README file that comes with Aleph One/SDL.
- Unix: If you have installed the Marathon, Marathon 2, or Marathon Infinity scenario, type
$ alephone-m1a1
for M1A1, or
$ alephone-marathon2
for Marathon 2, or
$ alephone-infinity
for Marathon Infinity, to start the game. If you dont have hardware-accelerated OpenGL, you will get better performance by specifying the -g option. If this causes corrupted graphics (red screen), you should also specify the -m option.
BeOS: Double-click the AlephOne application.
Enhancements:
- This version is based on a new upstream release with improved Internet gaming, Lua scripting support, and lots of bugfixes.
