Kitty 0.9.2

Kitty 0.9.2

Kitty is a plain DTV and Kitty client for Linux. more>>
Kitty is a plain DTV and Kitty client for Linux. DTV is the well-known Internet TV service for Apple Mac users.
Now also KDE users can watch DTV on their desktops!
First of all you need some kind of media player for KDE.
Better if it offers a KPart object (player embedded in konqueror).
I used KMPlayer, which works and rocks. But Ive tried also Kaffeine that also do the job but has more problems streaming stuff.
This package (and the whole Kitty) was built on Slackware. Probably on your distro, KDE headers are elsewhere. Remember to run "configure" with the:
--prefix=/usr/kde/3.4
parameter. Or, if you dont know where your headers are, try with:
$ kde-config --prefix
/opt/kde
So, your prefix parameter is "/opt/kde"...
./configure --prefix=/opt/kde
...is your configure syntax.
And, the last thing is BitTorrent.
Kitty has an embedded BitTorrent front-end for downloading videos from Bittorrent sources but the original BitTorrent package is needed. Install that package and find out which is the "binary" that is the pure textual client (in the latest versions, is "bittorrent-console" but also should be "btdownloadheadless.py". Find out). Then put that name (eventually with full path) into the "Bittorrent" section of Kittys preferences.
Enhancements:
- Changed directories for videos. Now are in "my-media" !
- Lotsa more bugfixes
- Fixed the nasty bug that enables actions after feed selection
- Stop button in the interface (thx Daniel Faust)
- Now playing icon also into the KDE interface
- Extension is shown near thumbnails/icons (thx Daniel Faust)
- Changed icons for video/audio
- Fixed bittorrent frontend for multilingual clients.

KXplayer 0.2 pre1

KXplayer 0.2 pre1

KXplayer is a very simple media player, based on xine. more>>
KXplayer is a very simple media player, based on xine. Its my hobby-project - just a way to get a better knowledge of KDEs internals.

Besides I wanted to learn programming C++ and since I believe the best way to learn programing is to write a program, I just made my mind to write a multimedia player.

Since it is a player, this word had to be in present in the title. The K and X appered there because of KDE (interface) and XINE (backend).

I took the decision to write a player because I needed one. I needed a good media player for KDE (something like XMMS with KDE inderface), which would be working as reliably as possible.

At present my PC is a 750MHz Duron with 128MB RAM and its almost imposible to work in OpenOffice.org and listen to MP3/OGG at the same time. Running XMMS and OpenOffice 1.x together on my Mandrake results in sound fragmentation.

For some time Ive been using boombox (you can find it in kde-apps). It is based on xine and I found it working better than xmms - almost no fragmentation. Unfortunately boomboxs interface is a bit strange (IMHO) and its not saving the equalizer settings (very annoying).

Lumiere 0.5

Lumiere 0.5

Lumiere is a GNOME frontend to libxine from the xine project. more>>
Lumiere is a GNOME frontend to libxine from the xine project. It has the looks of XMMS or Winamp and integrates seemlessly with the Gnome Desktop.
Lumiere is a media player, it just plays audio and video files. It is meant to work with Linux and alikes, not Windows.
Lumiere is a GNOME frontend to libxine from the xine project. It has the looks of XMMS or Winamp and integrates seemlessly with the Gnome Desktop. It uses most of the Gnome technologies available (Intercommunication, configuration registry, session management...).
Lumiere features a player with playlist management, visual effects, notification icon, a server mode. It can be used as a Nautilus "Viewer" and registers itself with the right-click menu of nautilus.
Lumiere depends on libxine to play medias, it will play only what is supported by your libxine (a default installation should handle most media types).
Lumiere is not aggressive with your computer, it needs little resources (if you use GNOME) and will not keep a hand on your audia or video hardware when not playing.
Main features:
- Play mp3, ogg, DivX;-), DVDs, Audio CDs...
- Integrate fully with the Gnome desktop (mime-types, dragn drop, notification area...)
- Keep it it memory, it wont keep your audio or XVideo devices busy
- Use it with Mozilla or Galeon, through mozilla-bonobo
- Hey, it follows mostly the "Human Interface Guidelines" from freedesktop.org, this means standard key shortcuts, standard menus, application registry registration, standard secondary windows... It works fine with Gnopernicus screen reader.
- It is time to throw away XMMS...

GQoob 0.3.0

GQoob 0.3.0

GQoob is a slightly configurable media player. more>>
GQoob is a slightly configurable media player. The API for the xine library changed after xine-libs 0.9.13, I was going to update to the new API but it never happened and have since lost interest in maintaining GQoob. (The features listed below are all implemented and work in GQoob 0.3.0, the few video related bugs in the release are mostly due to bugs present in xine-libs at the time).
GQoob is heavily based on GQmpeg. In fact most of it is the same, except for changes needed to work with GTK 2 and the addition of video support through the XINE library. The video overlay with XINE is possible thanks to the gtk xine interface borrowed from the Totem media player.
Main features:
- Playlists.
- Fullscreen.
- Random, repeat, repeat 1, loop ab.
- Playback speed control.
- Presets.
- MP3 tag read/write.
- OGG comment read/write.
- Keyboard support, also for skin widgets.
- Skins (themes).
- Built in skin editor.
- Flyby window on media change.

Xtheater 1.0.0 pre1

Xtheater 1.0.0 pre1

Xtheater is a MPEG-1 player in GTK+ capable of playing MPEG-1 format streams from file, http, and VCD with seek capability. more>>
Xtheater is a MPEG-1 player in GTK+ capable of playing MPEG-1 format streams from file, http, and VCD with seek capability.
Xtheater is a Media Player for linux capable of playing MPEG video and audio files, network streams, and VCDs, as well as AVI and ASF files. It accompishes this through the use of libaviplay and smpeg.
It tries to keep things simple and straightforward to provide the simplest, most stable behavior as possilbe, while at the same time offering a nice featureset.
Installation:
Installation of Xtheater is not the easiest install in the world. But it is also far from the hardest install. First you must install the following packages:
X11 - Required for everything. All modern *nix include this
Glib/GTK - Required for everything, 1.2.x
SDL - Required for everything, 1.2.x
SMPEG - Required for MP3/MPG/VCD playback, 0.4.3 or higher.
avifile - Required for AVI/ASF playback, from CVS repository
Avifile can be compiled without qt, so dont worry if you do not have qt, it will just not build some of the sample applications, sych as aviplay.
If you wish to install as much from binary packages, in general, the following package names will indicate binary packages of requirements listed above:
glib
glib-devel
gtk+
gtk+-devel
SDL
SDL-devel
smpeg
smpeg-devel
For AVI/ASF playback, you will have to get it from CVS, no binary packages are available. Note also that to get libaviplay to work properly it needs to be linked with libXxf86vm on some systems. do this by adding -lXxf86vm to the LIBS line of the lib/Makefile from the avifile tree.
After you have installed all prerequisite pacakges, you run ./configure. Before running configure, you may wish to read up on GL support. It can be enabled at this stage, but is not configured by default, for reasons explained in the GL section linked to previously.
After you have ran ./configure in the Xtheater directory to your liking, make install will put all the files in the right place. By default, the configuration is stored at /usr/local/Xtheater/config. the binary is placed at /usr/local/bin/xtheater, player plugins are in /usr/local/Xtheater/player/, and ui plugins are in /usr/local/Xtheater/ui/. None of this needs to be known for install, but is provided for reference here.
You should now be ready to run xtheater and have fun. Basic operation will be described in the next section, but this is very straightforward, so no instruction is needed, just provided for completeness.
Whats New in 1.0.0 pre1 Release:
- Fix check for smpeg, SDL, and avifile to check for a more current version.
- Enhanced flexibility of MPG/VCD fullscreen, allowing to choose scaling rather than a vidmode change.
- Fixed bug with smpeg plugin being run on X drivers with XVideo extension.
- Added support for XVideo extension for all player plugins, will automatically take advantage of XVideo overlays when available for scaling, revert to software scaler if unavailable
- made GL support with Mpeg compile if available, it is not recommended unless you have no other choice, however.
- Updated AVI/ASF plugin to use avifile-0.6 CVS rather than stable version.
- Enhanced plugin framework somewhat.
- Made it so that MPEG media could be closed by closing the playback window.
- Fixed bug where openeing too many files sequentially would cause player to crash (contributed by John Thacker)
Whats New in 0.9.2 Release:
- Fixed Seekbar to not update while being dragged.
- Designed for latest official stable avifile release (0.53.x)
- DPMS disabled for older XFree versions.
- Fixed drag and drop with nautilus file manager.
- Memory leak fixes by John Thacker

Noatun Normalize 0.1.2

Noatun Normalize 0.1.2

Noatun Normalize aims to develop a normalization plugin for the KDE media player Noatun. more>>
Noatun Normalize aims to develop a normalization plugin for the KDE media player Noatun.
It is composed of two parts, an Arts effect that handles the actual normalization of the played samples, and a Noatun plugin, that reads the relative volume adjustments and passes them to the effect. There are two ways the plugin can retrieve the relative volume adjustments:
1. it looks for the respective mp3 id3v2 tags or ogg tags which can be set by tools like normalize and vorbisgain,
2. it runs these tools itself and stores the results in the playlist items meta data. Thus the files wont be changed.
- For ogg vorbis normalization to work you need the latest vorbisgain version (0.36).
- For mp3 or wav normalization you need the normalize program.
- Make sure to install the package under the same prefix as artsd otherwise arts will not find the NoatunNormalize effect.
- If there is popular demand for it I would try to remove the dependency on the external programs and integrate them into the plugin itself.
