Boston University Linux is based on Fedora Core Linux, but specifically tailored for the BU environment.

Weve added security updates, made modifications to make software work better with the way things are set up here, and added some applications that we think you might like to have.

The server edition of BU Linux provides a modern, stable, and robust server platform suitable for long-term deployment in many roles throughout the university.

Supported Hardware

Currently, only i686-class machines are supported. This includes almost everything from Intels Pentium Pro on. AMD64 and Intel EM64T systems will work fine using their 32-bit mode. Watch for a 64-bit version later this summer.

Specific Notes on Server Applications

Mail Server:

BU Linux 4.5 Server Edition (Zodiac) includes three different choices of Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) for your mail server. Each of these open source servers has its unique strengths, and you can install one or more and use the utility system-switch-mail to choose which is active.

The default is IBMs Postfix, which is designed from scratch to be secure and easily configurable. On a newly-installed BU Linux machine, Postfix is configured to exchange mail on the local machine and to send mail out to other systems, but not receive mail from the network. For this reason, outgoing mail from global BU accounts (those matching valid BU login names and with the proper UID) will appear to come from @bu.edu rather than @hostname.bu.edu. Local users (including system accounts) will retain the hostname, but without reconfiguration, any replies will bounce. Changing the system to accept mail is easy; see the BU Linux web site for details.

For the maximum flexibility and for compatibility with existing configurations (and with existing expertise), we also include the traditional standard Sendmail. And, if you have particular special needs, you may find that the new Exim MTA fits your situation best.

No matter which MTA you choose, please contact us if you need any assistance. With so many options available, the situation can be confusing, and its unfortunately easy for an accidentally misconfigured system to become a target for spam relayers. We have significant expertise at configuring both Postfix and Sendmail in a variety of situations, and will be glad to help.

FTP Server:

This release of BU Linux provides two options for FTP. The first is vsftpd, which is designed to be simple and secure. This is the most appropriate for almost all situations, but if you require more power and flexibility, we also include ProFTPd, which has many more options and a configuration syntax similar to that of the Apache web server.

Please also remember that FTP is an insecure protocol and that any passwords used travel over the network in plain text. For this reason, its best to avoid anything but anonymous FTP. For user-authenticated file transfer, use SSH and SFTP. (SFTP is provided by the OpenSSH server and enabled by default.)

Web Server:

The web server software included in BU Linux is the industry-standard Apache httpd. We also include PHP 4.3 and many other useful tools for building a web server.
If you need to provide authenticated access to web services to BU users, please contact us and we will provide you with our University-standard Weblogin module. This provides a powerful and flexible means of single-signon access control for the BU user community and we want to make it as easy as possible for you to provide this for your users.

Database Server:

BU Linux includes MySQL 4.1 and PostgreSQL 7.4. For less demanding SQL applications, we also provide SQLite 3, which provides simple SQL databases without the management overhead of running a SQL server.

spam.pl is a perl script that extracts all relaying hosts from the headers of a spam mail and sends a complaint mail to all the responsible mail server administrators.
spam.pl is free software released under the GPL license.
There is no warranty, neither expressed nor implied, that spam.pl would do what it is said to do. It is up to you to use it.
Main features:
- Use your own complaint message
- Enter your own list of friendly hosts (probably the friendly hosts that relayed the mail to you)
- You should also instruct spam.pl what email-address it should put in the From: line when it mails its complaints.
- Run the script without sending any mail to see what receivers it could extract.
- Run the script with only one specified receiver, so that you can mail yourself and see what it looks good.
- Invoke the script from inside your favorite mail program. Just pipe the whole mail including headers into this script. You can of course just save the whole mail first and then pipe it manually into this script.
- Complain through the abuse.net service.
- Resolves IP-only addresses
- Optionally extract host names to complain to from the mail bodys http:// links.
- Can be made to use the whois.abuse.net lookup service.

Peephole program is a GNU/linux server that periodically checks users mailboxes harvesting only last emails, extracting user-defined regular espressions.

Each user, once logged in, has to define his mail providers [mail server and login informations] and other settings [time delay, regular expressions, ...].

Peephole supports various mail protocol as pop3, pop3s and apop.

The project also provides two clients. The first is a GUI (WindowMaker Dockapp) that lights up a user-defined icon when Peephole find an interesting mail on the mail server. The second is a text console client.

With this dockapp you wont waste your time with useless downloads.

procmail is a mail processing and SmartList mailing list suites. Procmail can be used to create mail-servers, mailing lists, sort your incoming mail into separate folders/files (real convenient when subscribing to one or more mailing lists or for prioritising your mail), preprocess your mail, start any programs upon mail arrival (e.g. to generate different chimes on your workstation for different types of mail) or selectively forward certain incoming mail automatically to someone.

XCmail is a MIME and multi POP3 server capable mailtool for X11 using the Xclasses layout library. XCmail was designed completely object orientated and by this may be improved easily.
The main purpose of XCmail is to read and write mails which may have any kind of data added (attached). For this XCmail can handle MIME types and has so called "helpers" to show different types. And XCmail offers "encoders" which encode and decode binary data into ASCII to allow the transport as mail over the Internet.
The GUI (graphical user interface) was designed to be mostly self explaining but of course there may be some things which are not explaining them self like settings or standard names that are unknown to first users.
The GUI was designed to be as simple as it can be and self explaining. Though, there are a few buttons which are not so easy to understand fo first users because are not standard.
XCmail also offers "encoders" which encode and decode binary data into ASCII to allow the transport via mail over the Internet.
The program works with a local mailbox (eg. /var/spool/mail) and multiple POP3 servers. With POP3 XCmail uses the faster UIDL function of POP3 servers (may be disabled if servers dont support this) and has a so called "UIDL history": If you get mails from your POP3 server but dont want to remove them there and later remove them only locally other mailers will read this mails again. Not XCmail! The UIDL history keeps a history of the mails read from the server so it wont read them again.
XCmail supports multiple mailboxes, has an address book for your favority email addresses and XCmail may start external programs to encode mails or handle MIME types.
XCmail also supportes PGP within PGP MIME (RFC 2015)!
Main features:

- encrypt complete MIME mails - including the attachments. This is a standard specified in RFC 2015
