Java.Inquisition 0.12

Java.Inquisition 0.12

Java.Inquisition is a desktop application for creating and taking computer-based tests and quizzes. more>>
Java.Inquisition project create and takes computer-based tests and quizzes. Cheating is fully supported, so its only going to be useful for things like mock exams and self-assessment rather than administering formal exams.

Java.Inquisition is free, open-source software (see License). It is written in (you guessed it) Java, and should therefore work on any platform where Java is supported (including Linux, Mac OS X and Windows).

Why did you write this?

Java.Inquisition was written while I was meant to be studying for the "Sun Certified Java Programmer" (SCJP) exam. Like many programmers, Im prone to the delusion that the best way to do any work is to write a tool to do it for you. So, rather than studying, I wrote this little application to "help" me study (even though I havent done a great deal of studying as a result). Anyway, the upshot is that Java.Inquisition has been designed with enough features to functionally simulate the SCJP 5.0 exam, and would probably work fine as a simulator engine for a number of other certifications.

Why does the world need Yet Another Exam Simulator Engine?

Good question. The quick answer is that I couldnt find a free software exam simulator that supported the features I wanted — in particular, drag-and-drop questions — so I thought Id write my own. Other exam simulators in this sort of area include JPilotExam (GNU GPL), Magnet Mocker and Ultramock. Commercial simulators include Whizlabs, JQPlus and EPractize Labs).

As Ive demonstrated by writing Java.Inquisition, any old idiot can put together a workable exam engine. The difficult bit is writing a decent, bug-free question set which includes helpful explanations for the answers. I was hoping people would be interested in helping out (see "How can I get involved?" below). To make the most of what other people have worked on, Java.Inquisition can import questions from JPilotExam, Magnet Mocker and Ultramock.

GroupSTAT 0.12.1

GroupSTAT 0.12.1

GroupSTAT generates statistics from a local Usenet news spool. more>>
GroupSTAT generates statistics from a local Usenet news spool.
Recently, I seem to have become the unofficial stats maintainer for rec.arts.drwho. The program that I have been using to generate these stats, StatNews, was inadequate for the job. I thought about making a few alterations to it and sending a patch to the maintainer (Davide Salvetti), but after looking over the source code to StatNews, I decided that it would be easier to start over and do a complete re-write, using StatNewss source as a cheat-sheet for certain aspects of the project.

So, I set about writing this new program. I did a little research, and found the News::Scan Perl module (available on CPAN or from the authors website. The News::Scan module allowed me to write a program to get the stats without having to actually look at any news articles. This made my job a lot easier.

I have tried to make GroupSTAT as portable as possible. This program has been (for the most part) designed and tested under Debian GNU/Linux woody, and may not work on other platforms. This should be considered a bug; if you have problems getting it to work on your flavor of Unix, please tell me.

TagCloud Maker Class 1.0

TagCloud Maker Class 1.0

TagCloud Maker Class is a class that takes a single dimensional array of terms and outputs a piece of HTML with each term. more>>
TagCloud Maker Class is a class that takes a single dimensional array of terms and outputs a piece of HTML with each term wrapped in a span tag with an ID that you can define in your CSS.

TagCloud Maker Class script can be called either as an object or as a static class.

Check out the example page. The keywords from the sample page come from the last 30 entries of my blog. Ill admit I cheated and just open the database and pull them from there instead of trying to call my blog w/curl or fopen and parse it. (Although that would have been cooler.) I then ran each blog entry against Yahoos Term Extraction API to get the terms. Then I pumped that array into my new TagCloud maker. The important code you cant see from the index.php is below.

require_once(TagCloud.php);
$x = TagCloud::fetch_cloud($thisArray,...,tagcloud_,http://www.technorati.com/tags/%s);
$o = new TagCloud($thisArray,...,tagcloud_,http://www.technorati.com/tags/%s,10,weight,2);
$o->get_cloud();
$y = $o->output_cloud;

As you can see, I used 2 different methods of creating the 2 lists. The first is just calling the object::method statically with all the necessary parameters. This is by far the easiest way to use this class and unless you need something special, its the way I recommend. The second way it to instantiate an object. I pass all the variables into the constructor but you could just as easily use the setters to set them all. (dont know why you would but hey, I spent an extra 15 minutes creating getters and setters so use them, by all means use them!)

Python library for PS3 0.1.2

Python library for PS3 0.1.2

Python library for PS3 (Sony Playstation 3) game development under Linux. more>>
Python library for PS3 (Sony Playstation 3) game development under Linux. Includes: rendering to the PS3 frame buffer on a per pixel basis or with blittable objects (solid, masked or alpha blended), support for PS3 controllers and integration with PIL.
As you may know, Ive been writing my PS3 stuff with a view to building up a library suitable for writing games and as I thought about it more the idea of using a scripting language for the game seemed the most logical way forward. I plumped on python as Id used it before for a couple of small jobs and it seemed like a nice language with a lot of support. Plus, it has the advantage of being pre-installed on most Linux distributions and very easy to extend, and so the PS3 library for python was born...
Brief bullet points of the current build:
Support for the PS3 frame buffer on a per pixel basis
Support for blittable objects (solid, masked or alpha blended)
Support for the PS3 controllers
Easy integration with PIL for image manipulation and text rendering
A proof-of-concept breakout game
After about a day and a half development, the core of the library was in place but in a not very visible way. It seemed that the only way I could actually demonstrate this to all be good stuff is by writing a quick game. And breakout is one of the simplest, so I spent another day writing that. Its important to have a good demo on release... So, Ill settle for this half-hearted attempt at a breakout game whose main redeeming feature is that it has alpha transparency on all the blocks!
Just to whet your interest, heres an example of how easy the code can be (taken directly from the test.py file):
image = Blittable(Image.open("miglu.jpg"))
for count in xrange(screen.height-image.height):
screen.clear()
screen.blit(image, (count,count) )
screen.flip()
screen.wait()
Enhancements:
- Adds support for image blitting with the SPUs.
- Currently, using 4 SPUs the alpha blended breakout demo runs at 30fps at 720p.

Stella 2.4

Stella 2.4

Stella is a multi-platform Atari 2600 VCS emulator released under the GNU General Public License (GPL). more>>
Stella is a multi-platform Atari 2600 VCS emulator.
Stella was originally developed for Linux by Bradford W. Mott, however, since its original release several people have joined the development team to port Stella to other operating systems such as AcornOS, AmigaOS, DOS, FreeBSD, IRIX, Linux, OS/2, MacOS, Unix, and Windows. The development team is working hard to perfect the emulator and we hope you enjoy our effort.
On this site youll find information about downloading, installing, using, and enhancing Stella. Youll also find useful information about the Atari 2600 and emulation.
Enhancements:
Added new video sub-system where fullscreen and windowed modes are treated
differently. Windowed modes now use -zoom_tia and -zoom_ui arguments,
while fullscreen modes can be specified by resolution using the new
-fullres argument.
- Widescreen video modes are now supported; Stella will simply center the
image with surrounding black borders.
- Many UI-related changes, including resizable ROM launcher and debugger
windows, and a new UI palette (the previous classic palette is still
available). This is still a work in progress.
- The locations of all major config files (statedir, palette file,
cheat file, properties file, etc) are now configurable from the
commandline and within the UI.
- Updates to TIA palette support. Added SECAM support, and removed the
built-in original palette. Standard, z26, and user are still
available.
- Various bugfixes to some debugger commands. The run command no
longer causes a crash, and several others have better error-checking.
- Added more complete cartridge auto-detection for Commavid (CV), 3E,
3F and Activision (FE) formats.
- Removed XStart and Width ROM properties, since the forthcoming TIA
rework wont be using them.
- Reworked internal storage of ROM properties to be faster and take up
less space.
- Added several different ways of stretching the OpenGL image to the
-gl_fsmax argument, for more flexibility.
- Removed OpenGL aspect ratio setting favour of the previously mentioned
video changes. Well see how this goes.
- Removed dirty-rect support from software rendering, since it was actually
sub-optimal in Windows and OSX and defaulted to off in previous versions.
- Added support for gzipped ROMs.
- Re-added pause support.
- Re-added support for Windows 98.
- Removed support for STELLA_BASEDIR environment variable, since each
config file can be now configured separately.
- Removed -fastscbios argument, since it must always be turned on.
- Removed PSP support, since it hasnt been updated in over a year, and
someone else is maintaining another port elsewhere.
- For the Unix/Linux port; fixed make install issues, and changed icon to
PNG format.
