Free playback software for linux

SMPlayer is a utility to play media file via the media player MPlayer. Files can be selected by a File-Selection-Dialog or by Drag-and-Drop.

By now it supports only basic functionality:

Select File, Play File, Seek, Switch to Fullscreen, adjust volume.
During playback a progress bar is shown.

Linux Audio Backstop project is a system for automated scheduling of audio recording and playback in a broadcast environment.
It includes features for controlling external audio switcher devices by means of serial and TCP/IP commands, as well as the ability to record and playback relay closures by means of the line of digital GPIO cards manufactured by MeasurementComputing.
The Linux Audio Backstop runs on the popular GNU/Linux operating system. It is freely available under the GNU General Public License.

XMMPlayer is an input plugin for XMMS that allows you to play video files from within XMMS using MPlayer as a back-end. Easy, plain and simple. Just add the files you wish to play to the XMMS playlist and hit "play".
XMMPlayer currently detects AVI/MPEG, QuickTime, RealMedia, .BIN and ASF(WMV, WMA) files by identifying them using file-signatures ("magic"). OGG movies are detected by their extension (".OGM").
Please remember that is product is still in beta-stage and may not work on all systems and with all video files MPlayer supports. See the README section below for more info.

PyAudioPlay is a set of Python classes which tie together the pyao, pymad, aifc and wav modules into a single media player. The actual Player class does all of its playback within a Python thread allowing the host application to perform others tasks and not have to worry about managing the audio playback.
PyAudioPlay is written in Python. PyAudioPlay now supports Ogg Vorbis because it uses the pyogg library.
A beta version 0.2.4 is available for download. Dont expect the API to be stable. AudioPlay requires Python >= 2.3 and pyao. Pymad is required for MP3 playback (optional). pyogg+pyvorbis is required for Vorbis playback (optional).
Basic documentation exists for playback in the audioplay.player module. A simple playback example exists in the player.py module, which can be used as a standalone command line player.
Enhancements:
- Some MP3 files are misdetected by the MAD library as having really weird sample rates (i.e., 24000 Hz). These files are now rectified to 44.1kHz automatically.

MPEG::MP3Play is a Perl extension for playing back MPEG music.

This Perl module enables you to playback MPEG music.

MPEG4IP provides an end-to-end system to explore streaming multimedia. The package includes many existing open source packages and the "glue" to integrate them together. This is a tool for streaming video and audio that is standards-oriented and free from proprietary protocols and extensions.

Provided are a live MPEG-4/H.261/MPEG-2/H.263 MP3/AAC/AMR broadcaster and file recorder, command line utilities such as an MP4 file creator and hinter, and an player that can both stream and playback from local file.

Our development is focused on the Linux platform, and has been ported to Windows, Solaris, FreeBSD, BSD/OS and Mac OS X, but it should be relatively straight-forward to use on other platforms. Many of the included packages are multi-platform already. Mp4live only works on Linux.

This code is not intended for end users, and does not contain executables. Please read all the legal information to determine if it is suitable for you.

RTSP, SDP, RTP (rfc 3551 for raw audio, 2250 for mpeg1/2 audio and video, 3016 for mpeg4 video, 3119 for mp3, 3640 for aac/celp audio, 3267 for AMR octet-aligned only, 3984 for h.264), mpeg2 transport streams (mpeg2 video, mp3 and ac3 audio), both multicast and streaming.
Supports http fetch of sdp files.

Other features:
1/2, double and full screen video, change aspect ratio of video
Audio should be able to convert channels and format to match any hardware, but not frequency.

IsmaCryp 1.0 specification is supported for local playback and streaming playback.

Tabula-Musica is a free media jukebox in server/client design.

Tabula-Musica is a "swiss knife" jukebox, which tries to cover everything. Its written in full modular Python and is easy to extend and adjust.

You can controll the server over Web, telnet, and a shell client. It currently supports xmms, lirc, and lcdproc.

Its primary written in Python and uses the GStreamer framework as playback backend.
