RSS-Planet 1.3

RSS-Planet is a script which fetches headlines from various news Web sites. more>>
RSS-Planet is a custom marker file generator for xplanet which uses RSS feeds from news websites to plot the current headlines on a world map.

By default, Yahoo! News and CNN.com are supported, but other feeds that point to articles with easily-discoverable place names (such as the Washington Post) should work as well.

Planets 0.1.13

Planets 0.1.13

Planets is an orbital simulator. more>>
Planets is a simple interactive program for playing with simulations of planetary systems, released under the GPL. The project runs on Linux and Windows, and could doubtless be ported to your favorite flavor of Unix.
Planets was originally designed for kids, in particular, for my then 4-year old nephew who is fascinated by astronomy. The user interface is aimed at being simple enough that a fairly young kid can get some joy out of it. But the adults who have used it have found it to be pretty fun as well.
The code is not bug-free, and Planets is missing some significant features. But its pretty stable and is a fun toy to play with. If you do download it, please drop me an email and tell me about your experience with it.
Main features:
- Saving and loading of universes
- Infinite undo (erase last action) and goback (return to point in time just after last action). This allows for undoing mistakes and replaying interesting configurations.
- Traces of planet trajectories
- Two ways of dealing with planet collisions:
- merges, where the colliding planets are merged into one planet, and
- bounces, where the colliding planets are bounced off each other elastically. This itself comes in two varieties:
- force bouncing, where the force between planets is made repulsive at close quarters.
- true bouncing, where simple pool-table physics calculations are made to determine when planets collide, and compute the appropriate bounce from said collision.
- kidmode, a mode where the focus is (mostly) locked on the application, and interesting changes are initiated by merely banging on the keyboard. This mode is aimed at 1-5 year olds.
- Center-of-mass following: it is possible to follow the center of mass of a subset of the planets. Thus, if you have a sun-moon-planet system, you can have the view automatically track the moon-planet pair.
- Can display kinetic, potential and total energy of the system.
- Both the gravitational constant and the gravitational exponent can be changed.
- There is a simple control panel that makes it possible to see and change the simulation options.
- Zooming, panning, and centering on the center of mass.

xplanets 1.0.0

xplanets 1.0.0

xplanets shows a simulation of a spacecraft flying through the solar system. more>>
xplanets shows a simulation of a spacecraft flying through the solar system. With the controls next to the simulation screen you can control the simulation and steer the spacecrafts flight.
The following planets are visible:
- the Sun (yellow)
- mercury (gray38)
- venus (burlywood2)
- earth (blue2)
- mars (LightSalmon3)
Note that the sizes of the sun and planets are not to scale, though their distances are. Showing the planets to scale would mean that they wouldnt be visible. The solar system is rather big, after all.
The planet nearest to the spaceship is indicated with a red circle around it. Its relative speed and distance are shown in the data display.
The xplanets program uses the GTK+ toolkit. It has been built with version 2.2.1, so it should work with any version >2.0.0. It does not work with GTK+ 1.x anymore.

Planets 3D 1.3

Planets 3D 1.3

Planets 3D is a graphical tool for the simulation of the solar system. more>>
The purpose of Planets 3D is to show a simulation of our solar system. The focus lies on a nice graphic (3D OpenGL) and the possibility to modify the objects of the solar system to see what happens.
This program is written on Linux using C++. In theory it should be portable to windows, because Ive used only plattform independent libraries. Anyone who tries to port it please contact me even if unsuccessful, perhaps I can help overcome arising errors.
By now there is included a small program which converts different coordinate systems into each other. It is called Astroconvert.
Main features:
- simulate the development of the solar system based on calculations of the gravity power
- take screenshots
- load and save solar systems
- modify solarsystem
- switch between different cameras to view the solar system (e.g. look through a shuttle window)

PDL::Transform::Cartography 2.4.3

PDL::Transform::Cartography 2.4.3

PDL::Transform::Cartography Perl module contains useful cartographic projections. more>>
PDL::Transform::Cartography Perl module contains useful cartographic projections.

SYNOPSIS

# make a Mercator map of Earth
use PDL::Transform::Cartography;
$a = earth_coast();
$a = graticule(10,2)->glue(1,$a);
$t = t_mercator;
$w = pgwin(xs);
$w->lines($t->apply($a)->clean_lines());

PDL::Transform::Cartography includes a variety of useful cartographic and observing projections (mappings of the surface of a sphere), including reprojected observer coordinates. See PDL::Transform for more information about image transforms in general.

Cartographic transformations are used for projecting not just terrestrial maps, but also any nearly spherical surface including the Sun, the Celestial sphere, various moons and planets, distant stars, etc. They also are useful for interpreting scientific images, which are themselves generally projections of a sphere onto a flat focal plane (e.g. the t_gnomonic projection).

Unless otherwise noted, all the transformations in this file convert from (theta,phi) coordinates on the unit sphere (e.g. (lon,lat) on a planet or (RA,dec) on the celestial sphere) into some sort of projected coordinates, and have inverse transformations that convert back to (theta,phi). This is equivalent to working from the equidistant cylindrical (or "plate caree") projection, if you are a cartography wonk.

The projected coordinates are generally in units of body radii (radians), so that multiplying the output by the scale of the map yields physical units that are correct wherever the scale is correct for that projection. For example, areas should be correct everywhere in the authalic projections; and linear scales are correct along meridians in the equidistant projections and along the standard parallels in all the projections.

The transformations that are authalic (equal-area), conformal (equal-angle), azimuthal (circularly symmetric), or perspective (true perspective on a focal plane from some viewpoint) are marked. The first two categories are mutually exclusive for all but the "unit sphere" 3-D projection.

Extra dimensions tacked on to each point to be transformed are, in general, ignored. That is so that you can add on an extra index to keep track of pen color. For example, earth_coast returns a 3x< n > piddle containing (lon, lat, pen) at each list location. Transforming the vector list retains the pen value as the first index after the dimensional directions.

Avadan 0.19a

Avadan 0.19a

Avadan is a rogue-like role-playing game situated in space. more>>
Avadan project is a rogue-like role-playing game situated in space.
The player travels from planet to planet in order to find the mystical oracles. The player is placed in nethack-style dungeons. The whole game is rogue-like, but with the extension of space travels.
The dungeons are shown with tile graphics, and space looks a bit better. On space stations, the player can talk to NPCs, get quests, and trade artifacts found in the dungeons.
To execute the game, you have to open and run the project with Gambas (>= 0.19.20). The finished version will include a binary with all source and data in one big file, so then youll still need gambas for execution, but the game can be started itself; you dont need to use the Gambas IDE.
To see how it works, you should stay in galaxy sector 2-3, fly to the stations entry (with cursor keys), press "d" to dock and then "l" to land on the planet. There you can discover a nethack-style dungeon, slash monsters, collect treasures and so on. The goal is to reach the oracle in dungeon level 10. Press "t" to talk to traders and the oracle. Press "F1" in every stage of the game to get help (esp. about the meaning of keys).
Enhancements:
- added magic weapons
- scrolls can be read (used)
- rearranged some parts of the code
- chests can be traps
- added oracles (essential for win the game, on dungen level 10)
- made enemies stronger
- added enemies for dungeon levels 5-10

Paradise 2000 Netrek Client RC5

Paradise 2000 Netrek Client RC5

Paradise 2000 represents my bend of the Paradise Netrek client. more>>
Paradise 2000 represents my bend of the Paradise Netrek client. Paradise 2000 Netrek Client is not a fork, because that would imply parallel development, but no one else has done anything with the client since about five years ago.
Paradise 2000 is in fact one of the most, if not the most, actively developed Netrek clients available today. It is for Linux (and FreeBSD) only, and is not open source*. Dont let the Paradise name fool you, it works just fine on standard bronco servers. Nobody has even played a game of Paradise Netrek for years!
The biggest new feature of the client, not found in any other, is the sound system. While the old Paradise client, Ted Turner, COW, and COW ports (Netrek1999,2000) have a simple sound effect system, its crap. Especially the one used by COW. The Paradise/Ted Turner one is better, and is partially written by me, though you wouldnt know that*.
The Paradise 2000 sound system has psychoacoustic stereo effects that place sounds based on where they happen. If someone on the left blows up, you can tell they are on the left just from the sound. The newest version of Paradise-2000 has a sound system with speech output using IBMs ViaVoice TTS. If a teammate sends a carrying message, the client will actually say something like, "F one carrying five to org."
Main features:
- See weapons on galactic map
- Auto-rotate galaxy to put playing teams on left side
- Dashboard timer to show repair or refit time remaining
- See the army count for the planet your are orbiting
- Remap your keys via the help window. Just push the key you want over the name of the function you want to assign to it.
- Use the same key for both bombing armies and picking armies. The client can tell by context with one would make sense.
- You can set configuration options to different values for different server types.
- Double buffering support for graphics. When turned on, eliminates flicker. Very useful for LCD monitors.
- Extensive support for enhanced observer mode:
- See all players tractors and pressors while observing.
- You can lock onto a cloaked player and observe them.
- All your ship stats will reflect the player you are observing. Even torps out, kills, and army capacity.
- Your ship and player letter dont get drawn on top of the player you are observings ship and letter.
- Observers wont have stats shown in your player list, cluttering it up unnecessarily..
- Stereo sound effects!
- Highly configurable speech synthesis!
- Option to omit the team letter of ships on the galactic. Just show 0 instead of F0, since you can tell the team by the color of the letter.
- Game score on hockey servers calculated and put on the galactic for easy reference.
- Cool looking streaking background stars when transwarping on Bronco servers.
- Flags on the dashboard gauges indicating the fuel/shields/hull needed to refit or transwarp.
- Single key transwarp on Bronco servers. Push - to automatically lock onto your base and warp to it!
- 19FLAGS protocol enhancement. Reduces messed up flags from packetloss. Hockey players, this will eliminate stuck tractors and pressors.
- Works with WindowMaker. Window manager delete buttons work.
- Hockey bug fix, puck doesnt cloak at warp 15 or 31.
- Support for short packets 2. Reduces bandwidth and improves playability with packetloss.
- Supports SBHOURS feature, see how many base hours someone has.
- Shrink phasers, like BRMH.
- Support for wheel mice. The wheel will scroll the message windows, and can be bound to actions like other mouse buttons.
- Re-enter the game after dying by pushing the spacebar, instead of clicking on the right team window. Faster and prevents selecting the wrong team on accident in 4v4 hockey games.
- 32 position ship bitmaps. Your ship rotations will look smoother.
- Small red circle around ship shows det radius.
- Tic marks to show exact ship heading.
- Arrow on puck to indicate direction.
- ID of player you are tractoring displayed next to your ship.
- Configure what columns are in the player list, both the one-column and two-column list. You can also change the width of the each field, so show fewer digits for instance.
- UDP portswap option that lets the client work through NAT firewalls, like Linux IP_MASQ, without a special module.
