The Hacker Key Guide 4

The Hacker Key Guide allows hackers, both current and aspiring, to encode vital information about their traits. more>>
The Hacker Key Guide allows hackers, both current and aspiring, to encode vital information about their traits into a single line of text, generally useful for sig files.
The Hacker Key Guide is based in principle on the wonderful Geek Code by Robert Hayden, but is skewed further to the geek programming niche.
Enhancements:
- Category additions include "Cygwin" for Windows, "MMO" and "RTS" to games, and several new additions to the books section.
- Answers 2 and 3 in math were changed for those hackers still in secondary school.
- The Linux section was completely revamped and updated, and the user-specified (O)ther option was added to Linux and IDE/text editors.
- The politics section now uses the Political Compass website ratings.

Libdatastruct 0.0.1

Libdatastruct is an ANSI C library for abstract data types (ADT) and common algorithms. more>>
Libdatastruct is an ANSI C library for abstract data types (ADT) and common algorithms. Since it uses some compiler specific optimization methods, it is compatible for any GCC (or compatible) compiler.

This helps the programmer focus on other, usually more important, aspects of the program, and not have to reinvent the wheel.

Memory has been considered a vital factor, so problems in its management have been (or tried to) avoided, therefore memory leaks, use of uninitialized memory, reading/writing invalid blocks, etc. are a constant preoccupation.

These are not original algorithms, they have been used for years, and are a fundamental part of computer science.

Installation:

make
make install

Usage:

compilation: cc program.c -ldatastruct -Wall -o program

C++ Portable Types Library (PTypes) 2.1.1

C++ Portable Types Library (PTypes) 2.1.1

C++ Portable Types Library (PTypes) is a simple alternative to the STL with multithreading and networking. more>>
C++ Portable Types Library (PTypes) is a simple alternative to the STL that includes multithreading and networking. C++ Portable Types Library (PTypes) defines dynamic strings, variants, character sets, lists and other basic data types along with portable thread and synchronization objects, IP sockets and named pipes. Its main `target audience is developers of complex network daemons, robots or non-visual client/server applications of any kind.
PTypes defines simple and intuitive interfaces and differs from the STL in fairly moderate use of templates. The library is portable across many modern operating systems (currently FreeBSD, Linux, SunOS, Mac OS X and Windows). All platform-dependent issues are hidden inside. A simple web server called wshare is included in the package to demonstrate the full power of the library.
And finally, PTypes is open and free.
Main features:
- Threads and synchronization primitives solve the vital problem of diversity of the threading APIs on different platforms. The library also offers message queues and job queues as additional methods of thread synchronization and maintenance.
- IP socket classes and utilities provide complete IP-based framework for both client-side and server-side programming. Combined with PTypes multithreading, these classes can be used for designing complex non-visual applications, such like network daemons or web robots.
- Dynamic strings, variants, character sets, date/time type and various kinds of dynamic and associative arrays: Delphi programmers will find them very similar to the ones in their favorite language. The collection of these basic data types may be useful, among other things, for building compilers and interpreters for higher-level languages.
- Streaming interfaces provide buffered I/O with simple and powerful text parsing methods. A strictly defined syntax for a given text format or a formal language can be represented by calls to PTypes token extraction methods. The unified streaming interface is applicable to files, named pipes and network sockets.
- Special thread class with enhanced functionality called unit. Units have their own main() and input/output plugs; they can be connected to each other within one application to form pipes, like processes in the UNIX shell.
- Finally, everything above is portable: all platform-dependent details are hidden inside.
Enhancements:
- Added support for HP-UX
- Compilation problems solved on *BSD systems (64-bit seek issue)
- Several MacOS X compilation problems solved (socklen_t, libtool)
- MSVC project files are now in the new VC7+ format (.sln, .vcproj)
- Dropped support for BSDi, CygWin and also the Borland C++ compiler.

Pub Team Football Manager 1.0

Pub Team Football Manager 1.0

Pub Team Football Manager is a football manager software. more>>
Pub Team Football Manager is a football manager software.

From the main screen, there are six options available (yellow buttons) for showing or editing diffrent information during the game. Here is an explanation:

Info: This shows the details of your team such as kit colours and current news items. Kit colours can be changed by clicking them. The latest news from the pub team grapevine is shown, with any items directly relevant to your team are *** starred.
Squad: The place where you pick your team. Players numbered 1 to 11 will play, 12 and above are substitutes or rested. Each players current position, together with his fitness and morale, are indicated next to his name. Further vital statistics of a player are obtained by clicking on his name. To move a player in or out of your first eleven, click on the "Sub" or "Play" button. You may look at other teams squads by clicking on the < and > buttons.
Tactics: Choose the tactics and playing style of your team. A number of formations are available, and you can choose your teams passing style and aggressiveness.
Fixtures: Lists all your fixtures for the current season, including cup fixtures when drawn. You may look at other teams fixtures by clicking on the < and > buttons.
Table: The current league standings. There are two divisions, each containing 16 teams. Your team is indicated by *.
Records: Shows the best wins and record goalscorers for the current season.
Play: Click here to actually play your matches. The weeks fixtures from your division are indicated, with your match highlighted in red. Press "Start Match" to begin the match simulation, but you can later pause if things start to happen too quickly. A match report and stats are available, and are updated as the match plays. If one of your players gets injured, the game will automatically be paused.

To start a new game, select which team you wish to take charge of, and press "Start New Game". The main screen is then displayed, which is controlled by the large yellow buttons, described in the opposite panel...

Your squad consists of many players who frequent your local drinking establishment. Each player has many attributes, which are rated from A+ to F. These affect the gameplay in various ways. For example, a player who is good at tackling may make a good defender, whereas a player whose shooting attribute is high should be put up front.

All the players attributes are available in the "Squad" section by clicking on a players name. Also available is each players preferred position, indicated in brackets e.g. (Def/Mid), although this is only a guide.

The most important attribute is the players fitness. Try to pick players who are reasonably fit wherever possible. Players fitness may improve when rested, but if they are rested too long, their morale may suffer.

The chosen style of play and formation also have an influence, and some options work better with certain kinds of players. It is your job as manager to weigh up all the factors when picking your strategy and players.

As the season progresses, you will sometimes play cup matches. The Cup is a knockout tournament which includes teams from both divisions. If you are knocked out, you will not play in further rounds, but you can still watch the matches.

Occasionally, players will leave your club, and sometimes new players may join. Since it is a pub team, you dont have much control of what your players do. However, players with a low morale are more likely to leave.

At the end of the season, the top three teams from the lower division (B) are promoted to the higher division (A). The game is open-ended and you may continue for as many seasons as you like.

LuBu OpenMagic 1.0

LuBu OpenMagic 1.0

LuBu OpenMagic is an enhancement of the Solaris OpenStep 1.1-sparc desktop enviroment. more>>
LuBu OpenMagic is an enhancement of the Solaris OpenStep 1.1-sparc desktop enviroment.

It is not a rewrite, nor is it a re-release, but is a package that enhances and improves (and includes) Solaris OpenStep 1.1.

LuBu OpenMagic is only available for the SPARC architecture.

LuBu OpenMagic 1.0 is a heavily modified version of the Lighthouse OpenStep 1.1
release for the Sparc platform. It is not a theme, nor a reconfiguration, but
an almost pure rewrite of non-binary files (runtime configurations, application
definitions, enviroment variables, and many functions). In some parts entire functions
have been replaced features have been added. This applies primarily to the Wrapper
function which has been entirely rewritten to use the LuBu OpenMagic Alert System
(aka: LOAS). This is a completely new feature which among many other things also
produces error messages in human readable form, with the actual cause of the error.
This makes taking countermeasures and avoiding future errors easier. The default
application definitions provided with OpenStep 1.1 were the cause of countless bugs,
and I have spendt a great amount of time optimizing the default defs. There are still
a few bugs for which I have found no workaround, but non are critical.

OpenMagic 1.0 will only run on Sparc CPUs since it is based on Solaris OpenStep 1.1 for Sparc. There is not, nor will there ever be, a release for any other CPU. Since
LuBu OpenMagic 1.0 is based on the binary Solaris OpenStep release, it remains a
Solaris Sparc product. There are no known binaries for other CPUs or operating
systems. It does however fully integrate the Solaris Operating Enviroment, Common
Desktop Enviroment, and any other enviroments that run on Solaris Sparc. This makes it alot easier to integrate applications into the OpenStep enviroment without the need of porting.

LuBu OpenMagic 1.0 is packaged as a pure gzipped tar file, intended for unpacking
from the root directory (ie: / ). This means that the default installation directory for OpenStep should be /usr/openstep - it is importent that this rule is followed, else the installation will fail and the distribution will not function at all. It is however possible to extract to a different directory and create a symlink to /usr/openstep. Just remember to copy the etc/dt/config files to their desired location (/etc/dt/config). This is needed as there are some additional files included in order for LuBu OpenMagic 1.0 to function correctly:

1. A modified /etc/dt/config/Xservers file with -dpi 72
2. Configuration files for dtlogin (in /etc/dt/config/*.os|*.xpm)
3. Icons for /cdrom and /floppy (directories will be created if missing)

For an optimal installation:

$ su -
# cd /
# gtar zxvf /path/to/lubu_openwb-1.0-sparc.tgz

Make sure that all the files are extracted, and that existing files ARE overwritten! This will NOT reduce system security or in any other way reduce system performance.

Make sure all files in /usr/openstep are owned by bin:bin else you will loose alot of functionality! There is NO NEED for ANY of the files to be owned by root (other than possibly Preferences.app/set_password which is initially broken due to a missing library - see KNOWN_BUGS).

If you must chown /usr/openstep, then it is a good idea to cd to /usr before running chown -R in case you are using a non-standard chown. Worst case scenario is that a chown -R from / chowns your entire system bin:bin! Better safe than sorry.

# cd /usr
# chown -R bin:bin openstep/

If you extracted OpenStep to a different location, then cd to that location before running chown

# cd /path/to/your/installation
# chown -R bin:bin ../openstep (provided you actually are in the openstep directory)

Make sure the following line is present in /etc/dt/config/Xservers:
:0 Local local_uid@console root /usr/openwin/bin/Xsun :0 -nobanner -dpi 72
(this is however included in the distribution files and should be installed upon
extraction). For optimal performance it is best to run your display at -depth 24 -dpi 72

This file (Xservers) should be -rwx-xr-x otherwise run
# chmod 755 /etc/dt/config/Xservers

It is vital that dtlogin is restarted after installation. Exit your windowmanager, login as root to the system console, and run the following commands (as root):

# sh /etc/init.d/dtlogin stop
# sh /etc/init.d/dtlogin start

Now log out from the console and allow the dtlogin loginwindow to reappear.
Select "LuBu OpenMagic 1.0" from the session menu. Log in and enjoy!

It is however possible to run LuBu OpenMagic 1.0 without CDE installed, or without running it through dtlogin by simply starting the file /usr/openstep/bin/openstep:

$ sh /usr/openstep/bin/openstep

though you might loose some valuable configurations using this method.
It has not as of yet been tested thouroughly.

Python Hypertext Preprocessor 0.92

Python Hypertext Preprocessor 0.92

PyHP is a system to embed Python code in an HTML document in a way similar to how PHP works. more>>
PyHP is a system to embed Python code in an HTML document in a way similar to how PHP works. PyHP allows use of the Python programming language in scripts similar to PHP. PyHP uses the Python 2.0 language to parse elements embedded in an HTML page.
When I started this, I was enamoured with PHP. Ive since discovered that embedding code in HTML does not seem like the most logical way to do things. If someone wants to pick this up, email me. In the mean time, if you want a truely novel approach to web design with Python, check out the very cool Quixote framework.
THis is a small, fast, hypertext preprocessor that used the worlds greatest scripting language, Python, as its base. There was another program out there that did this, PMZ, but I quickly found what I believed to be shortcomings in it.
Namespace polution
My main problem with PMZ is that it does not execute its programs in a seperate name space. If you define a variable name fields in the global namespace then PMZ will crap out because there is a variable of that name that is of vital importance to the interpreter itself. I did not find this to be acceptable, and Python 2.0s InteractiveInterpreter class made it easy to get around this in PyHP.
Speed
PyHP was designed for use with Apaches mod_python. It will run just fine as a standalone program, but it has been designed to be accelerated under mod_python by automatically caching modules that have been imported and supporting the manual caching of variables as well
Header specification
PMZ has a fixed set of headers that cannot be modified by a PMZ script. PyHP allows script writers to specify what headers are attached to their documents, even to do so in the middle of the HTML file.
Enhancements:
- Fixed a critical bug caused by the previous changes
- Added better documentation
- Tested before releasing

Free Help Desk 1.08a

Free Help Desk 1.08a

Help desk software is vital to the success of your help desk and customer support staff. more>>
Help desk software is vital to the success of your help desk and customer support staff. Tracking and responding to help desk calls is faster and more efficient when using well designed help desk software.
The design of this software comes from many years of help desk experience working in a help desk environment. All the basic tools for running a successful help desk are included in this help desk software package.
Help desk software should be used in any organization whether its a large corporation or a small startup company. Why should my company implement a helpdesk software solution? Some of the benefits of helpdesk software are improved customer service, faster response times and lower information technology costs. Lets outline these three areas in greater detail.
When a user contacts the computer support professional in your organization, what steps are taken? Does it depend on who answered the phone? Do the immediately drop any task and visit your desk? Do they jot your information down on a note pad? Do they attempt to resolve the issue on the phone at great length? What criteria merits the call be moved to another member of the IT staff, or merits a call the software vendor?
All these questions can be answered in some way within the use of help desk software. Helpdesk software forces your IT staff to handle help desk calls in a structured manner that can be counted on each time. When a helpdesk call is received, it should be immediately be entered into the help desk software database, even if it is easily answered.
At this point there is now a record of the call, and this allows other IT staff to view the contents of the problem and makes it a simple task for other IT staff members to offer solutions. This also prevents the call from being lost in the shuffle if staff is busy when the call is received. Your general staff will have much more confidence that when they place that call to your help desk staff, their call will be handled in a structured method to ensure their satisfaction.
If they can continue to work, they will not feel the need to keep calling or checking with IT staff on the progress, or worry that their call will not be answered in a reasonable amount of time. This allows them to focus on their tasks, and not be concerned with the status of their call.
Many help desk software solutions offer a self-help method, allowing the staff members in your company to submit a helpdesk request directly into the help desk system. (granted their computer is functioning enough for this) This feature greatly streamlines the process, and can increase response time for all users. Help desk support staff will not be interrupted by the phone call and have to stop working on another issue to record the call information.
In fact, it should be encouraged by the IT staff to submit all request possible with this method. When a request is entered into the system, it allows any available support personnel to respond to the request. It also allows support personnel to diversify calls, so if a calls is shown to be about a particular problem that a staff member has greater expertise with, that staff member will likely be able to solve the problem much quicker. Once each calls is resolved, the solution will then become available for future reference.
This is one of the greatest benefits an organization will receive from using a help desk system. This allows newer support staff to be able to answer many questions by simply searching the database for other calls. Also prevent 2 support staff from having to research for the same solution, this benefits in much faster response time for the end user.
Everything mentioned above will contribute to the overall quality of service in your organization, happier staff and faster response time will mean lower costs and higher productivity for your organization.
Enhancements:
- This release fixes a bug found in the main form that caused some performance problems in certain system configurations.

FramebufferUI 0.11.2

FramebufferUI 0.11.2

FBUI is a small, fast in-kernel GUI windowing system for Linux. more>>
FBUI is a small, in-kernel graphical user interface for Linux. It permits you to put windows in each framebuffer-based virtual console, to read keyboard input, track a mouse pointer, and respond to typical GUI events. Each process may have more than one window.
- FBUI exists to reduce the software bloat that plagues modern operating systems. It does this by virtue of its being a simple windowing system in the form of a small, 32 kilobyte driver which for some purposes may be quite sufficient. Liberation from bloat is desirable for a number of reasons that I explain in the Philosophy section.
- FBUI exists to assists people who are prohibited from using X Windows because they are using resource-limited platforms such as old computers and embedded devices. On these, X is an impossible burden. However a vanilla framebuffer is often too primitive. FBUI is "just right", and libfbui makes using FBUI even easier to use by providing abstractions and additional functions.
- FBUI exists to correct a flaw in the Linux operating system architecture. The traditional GUI -- X Windows -- is unlike any other subsystem of Linux in that the hardware-accelerated video drivers it uses are located within the X server, outside the kernel. Notice: normally Linux drivers and vital subsystems such as keyboard, USB, filesystem, serial I/O, et cetera are all located inside the kernel. FBUI simply puts the graphics UI driver where it belongs: inside the kernel with all the other drivers.
Main features:
- Unlike X Windows, FBUI supports windows on every virtual console.
- Each program may have more than one window.
- Overlapping windows are currently not supported, but I am adding support for them now.
- There is no concept of parent and child windows.
- Programs can receive raw keystrokes from FBUI which they can then translate to ASCII using a library routine. One process is permitted to have keyboard focus.
- Each process accesses its windows completely independently of all other processes.
- In X, the library has to send all drawing commands to the server process, which puts them in a queue and executes them whenever it has a chance. If the server is busy, or another X application is flooding the queue, then an X application must wait. Not so with FBUI, where the ioctl takes a list of drawing commands that go directly to be executed if the window is visible and irregardless of what any other window is doing. To further ensure the above concurrency is the norm, use of semaphores within FBUI to access common data is made as brief as possible.
- Each virtual console can have its own optional window manager process. But this is not necessary and for instance many programs that Ive written are also designed to run in standalone mode, examples being fbcalc, fbview, fbscribble, and the my FBUI variant of mpeg2decode.
- Im providing a fairly basic window manager fbwm, but current development is centered on fbpm, which is my panel-based window manager.
FBUI offers a sufficient set of drawing routines:
- draw point, line, horizontal line, vertical line, rectangle
- draw text (8-bit)
- window clear, fill rectangle, clear rectangle
- copy area
- put pixels (3-byte RGB, and 4-byte (unsigned long) RGB, and native)
- wait for event
- poll for event
- the window manager process can hide and unhide other processes windows, move, resize, re-expose, and delete windows.
- read point
- FBUI is currently written for 8,16,24, and 32-bit directcolor and truecolor. I am presently adding 4-bpp VGA. (Note : on VESA, Ive done testing for 24 bit only.)
Sample programs provided (I suppose Ive gotten carried away) :
- panel-based window manager (current focus of work)
- conventional window manager
- JPEG+TIFF image viewer
- very simple MPEG playback based on circa 1995 MPEG2 library
- terminal emulator (based on ggiterm)
- load monitor
- "scribbler" drawing program
- analog clock
- simple calculator
- "Start" button program, which invokes fblauncher menu program
- POP3 mail checker
- "to do list" displayer program

Thousand Parsec 0.4.1

Thousand Parsec 0.4.1

Thousand Parsec is a 4 Xs game (eXplore, eXpand, eXterminate, eXploit). more>>
Thousand Parsec is a 4 Xs game (eXplore, eXpand, eXterminate, eXploit) but it is different in the sense that it is designed for long games supporting universes as large as your computer can handle. (Have a quad Xeon with 4 gig of ram? Well have a couple of million systems in your universe!.

Thousand Parsec also supports long term play with players joining and leaving throughout the game. As well the tech tree is easily expandable and can be extended during the game without effecting anybody already playing (ie introduction of new technology as the game progresses).

You can choose to have highly exotic universes where the laws of physics are totally different or universes that are very similar to our own.

The game is TURN BASED, this means that clicking quickly isnt vital but strategy is.

The game should also be highly extend-able. Allowing player customisation not found in the commercial games.

Anyway we have high hopes for what TP will become. We have currently stolen a lot of ideas from Stars!, VGA Planets an XPace.

FSHeal 0.2

FSHeal is a tool for mending filesystems and reporting statistics. more>>
FSHeal aims to be a general filesystem tool that can scan and report vital "defective" information about the filesystem like broken symlinks, forgotten backup files, and left-over object files, but also source files, documentation files, user documents, and so on.

It will scan the filesystem without modifying anything and reporting all the data to a logfile specified by the user which can then be reviewed and actions taken accordingly.
