Alien Perl module 0.91

Alien Perl module 0.91

Alien Perl module package contains external libraries wrapped up for your viewing pleasure! more>>
Alien Perl module package contains external libraries wrapped up for your viewing pleasure!

SYNOPSIS

perldoc Alien;

Alien is a package that exists just to hold together an idea, the idea of Alien:: packages, so there is no code here, just motivation for Alien.

Why

James and I ended up doing a build system for Fotango, lots of people have done a build system, it is a pretty boring task. The boring task is really all the mindlessly stupid things you need to do to build C libraries that Perl modules require, these C modules usually have unusual installation systems or require vastly different options. So CPAN modules install easy, 3rd party stuff is nasty.
So, suddenly an idea struck me, Alien packages! Imagine a CPAN module that has as its only task to make sure a certain library is installed! That means that you can write all the voodoo in your Build.PL file and then just make sure the module requires the correct Alien module! Then anything that install Perl modules will deal with it automatically!

How

So, what should an Alien module do? It should make sure that the target is installed and it should provide the caller with enough information to use it.
The idea is that you use it to make sure it is there, and you call class methods to find out what to use. These class methods will be individually specified by the stand alone Alien modules.

No Framework!

The reason this is so loosely worded is because we have no idea what common functionality will be needed, so we will let evolution work for us and see what individual Alien packages need and then eventually factor it out into this packages. I would like to avoid a topdown design approach.

Responsibilities of a Alien module.

On installation, make sure the required package is there, otherwise install it.
On usage, make sure the required package is there, else croak.

Bundle the source with the module, or download it.

Allow module authors to access information it gathers.

Document itself well.

Preferably use Module::Build.

Be sane.

Perl OS is a program written in the Perl programming language combined with the Perl module Tk.

Perl OS was created to make an easy interface to run Perl/Tk programs. It was also created to be an easy working environment complete with a text editor, paint program, and more.

The program comes with several programs, along with a utility to add many more which can be found on the Internet.

From the outside, Perl OS looks like a simple operating system. But inside, it is a powerful system for working with Perl and Tk.

Image::Density Perl Module 0.2

Image::Density Perl Module 0.2

The metric implemented in the Image::Density Perl Module estimates the density of data where there is data. more>>
The metric implemented in the Image::Density Perl Module estimates the density of data where there is data, and has a reasonable correlation with goodness as judged by humans.

That is, if you let a human look at a set of images and judge quality, the density values for those images as calculated here tend to correlate well with the human judgement (densities that are too high or too low represent "bad images).

This project is intended for use on bitonal TIFF images, such as those from scanning paper documents.

Perl Chat 0.1.1

Perl Chat 0.1.1

http://perlchat.sourceforge.net more>>
Perl Chat is a project that consists of a client and a server, both written in perl.

The goal of this project is to create a chat server that can be used on smaller networks such as a college campus or a business network.

Both the client and the server are written in Perl, and the client uses the Tk module to generate its GUI.

Installation:

First of all you need a working version of Perl. Preferably 5.6 but 5.005X should also work fine. For versions of Perl Chat < 0.1.0 you will need to compile Perl with Threads. (Keep in mind that Threads are still experimental) I designed this program with Perl 5.6.0 which can be found HERE.

You will need to read the installation instructions to compile it with Threads. I advise anyone who is doing this to install this new version of perl into /usr/local/ so as to not overwrite your old perl. Then by changing the first line of the script you can toggle between the different installs of perl.

File::Remove 0.34

File::Remove 0.34

File::Remove is a Perl module to remove files and directories. more>>
File::Remove is a Perl module to remove files and directories.

SYNOPSIS

use File::Remove qw(remove);

# removes (without recursion) several files
remove qw( *.c *.pl );

# removes (with recursion) several directories
remove 1, qw( directory1 directory2 );

# removes (with recursion) several files and directories
remove 1, qw( file1 file2 directory1 *~ );

# trashes (with support for undeleting later) several files
trash qw( *~ );

File::Remove::remove removes files and directories. It acts like /bin/rm, for the most part. Although unlink can be given a list of files, it will not remove directories; this module remedies that. It also accepts wildcards, * and ?, as arguments for filenames.

File::Remove::trash accepts the same arguments as remove, with the addition of an optional, infrequently used "other platforms" hashref.

mod_removeip 0.2

mod_removeip 0.2

mod_removeip is an Apache module that can remove information about the remote IP. more>>
mod_removeip is an Apache module that can remove information about the remote IP.

This module throws away the information on the remote IP and hostname right at the beginning of handling the request. That means its not logged, is not available to any web apps, and cant leak into error logs and the like.

This is written for use on servers with a strict policy on protecting the identity of their users. If the Spooks come and demand that you hand over your server so they can try to identify one of your users, this should be enough that you can categorically state that there is no IP info to be found, and might mean your server doesnt go offline.

There is currently no facility for enabling the module on a per site or per directory basis. Its an all or nothing thing. This is because the intent is to make sure IP info is not on the server at all. If people want more configurability, I might release an
alternative version.

Compile and Install for apache 1.3

make removeip
make install

Compile and Install for 2.0:

not completed. let me know if you want it.
make removeip-2.0
make install-2.0

Scrape::USPS::ZipLookup Perl Module 2.4

Scrape::USPS::ZipLookup Perl Module 2.4

Scrape::USPS::ZipLookup Perl Module provides a programmatic interface to United States Postal Service. more>>
The United States Postal Service (USPS) has on its web site an HTML form at http://www.usps.com/zip4/ for standardizing an address. Given a firm, urbanization, street address, city, state, and zip, it will put the address into standard form (provided the address is in their database) and display a page with the resulting address.
Scrape::USPS::ZipLookup Perl Module provides a programmatic interface to this service, so you can write a program to process your entire personal address book without having to manually type them all in to the form.
Because the USPS could change or remove this functionality at any time, be prepared for the possibility that this code may fail to function. In fact, as of this version, there is no error checking in place, so if they do change things, this code will most likely fail in a noisy way. If you discover that the service has changed, please email the author your findings.
If an error occurs in trying to standardize the address, then no array will be returned. Otherwise, a four-element array will be returned.
To see debugging output, call $zlu->verbose(1).
