Example netfilter setup contains a simple example on how to setup netfilter.
Warning this is experimental, I dont garantee this is 100% secure, it just does the work fine for me and i thought it could be a good jumpstart for people new to netfilter.
Now I am waiting for your corrections, suggestions and critics. Also I am gonna write a small addon for setting up dynamic rules cause i am tired of all these programs with dynamics port like bind, xdm and rpc.
Btw nmap -sU will still report udp dropping port as open.
nmap -sU -p 111 192.168.1.1

Combining firewall, Intrusion Detection System and VPN functionality, MNF 2 is the ultimate full-featured security solution meeting all your demands. Furthermore, to make your network even more secure, benefit from a year of free updates through Mandriva Online Pro!
Main features:
- a firewall, to protect your computer network from unauthorized access (filtering).
- Intrusion Detection System, to alert you to abnormal network activity.
- Virtual Private Network, to enable a secure private tunnel over public networks.
- Proxy server, to intercept all web traffic entering the network.
- DHCP server, to enable the automatic configuration of new machines connected to the LAN.
- Caching DNS, to provide a local DNS service for computers connected to the LAN.
New Featurs:
As well as the existing IPSec, MNF2 provides 2 other types of VPN:
PPTP: a desktop under Windows(R) can be automatically connected without installing any special software
OpenVPN: a lighter open source VPN; Compattible with Linux, Mac OS and Windows
Bonding: Channel combines several network interfaces into a single connection. Effectively, it means that data transfer speeds can be multiplied.
Bridging: this new function enables the administrator to build bridges between network interfaces.
Traffic shaping: You can regulate the flow of traffic on your network just by clicking on a wizard.
Network mapping: Makes it possible to connect networks which use the same private network addresses
Peer-to-Peer Filtering: MNF2 automatically blocks network traffic from "Fast Track" peer-to-peer clients.
Better software support
2.6 Linux Kernel
Better hardware support
Improved support for multiple network cards (up to 10)
Wi-Fi Support
Better ADSL support
Services included in the product
Mandriva Online Pro: benefit from updates for one year through Mandriva Online Pro

Fast Messaging Peer to Peer 0.8.0-dev
Fast Messaging Peer to Peer (FM P2P) is a simple P2P program that forms a TCP-based overlay network. more>>
Fast Messaging Peer to Peer (FM P2P) is a simple P2P program that forms a TCP-based overlay network by which a user may chat or share files.
Why name this FastMessaging when its anything but fast? Simply put, it is a reference to the underlying functioning of the application. TCUP, the protocol used to do the overlay network (the network we build ontop of an existing TCP/IP network) is message based.
We think it is Fast because there is no queueing or long searches. FastMessaging is built to construct moderately sized networks which have reasonably high responsiveness at the cost of global information sharing.
Perhaps thats not the best reasoning, but it works. Its just a name and the application needs a better name anyway. For now I just refer to it as FM.

Network Security Toolkit 1.5.0
Network Security Toolkit is a bootable ISO live CD and its based on Fedora Core 2. more>>
Network Security Toolkit is a bootable ISO live CD and its based on Fedora Core 2.
The toolkit was designed to provide easy access to best-of-breed Open Source Network Security Applications and should run on most x86 platforms.
The main intent of developing this toolkit was to provide the network security administrator with a comprehensive set of Open Source Network Security Tools. The majority of tools published in the article: Top 75 Security Tools by insecure.org are available in the toolkit.
What we find rather fascinating with NST is that we can transform most x86 systems (Pentium II and above) into a system designed for network traffic analysis, intrusion detection, network packet generation, wireless network monitoring, a virtual system service server, or a sophisticated network/host scanner.
This can all be done without disturbing or modifying any underlying sub-system disk. NST can be up and running on a typical x86 notebook in less than a minute by just rebooting with the NST ISO CD. The notebooks hard disk will not be altered in any way.
NST also makes an excellent tool to help one with all sorts of crash recovery troubleshooting scenarios and situations.
Enhancements:
- We are pleased to announce the latest NST release: v1.5.0. This release is based on Fedora Core 5 using the Linux kernel 2.6.18. Here are some of the highlights for this release: the NST Web User Interface (WUI), has been greatly enhanced and cleaned up; extensive additions to managing and analyzing network packet captures; the ability to setup and manage printers; the ability to easily mount many different supported file system types; the ability to manage the NST as a file server (both NFS and CIFS); the addition of the Inprotect package (a Nessus manager); the addition of the Zabbix package (another network resource monitoring tool - similar to Nagios)....

Perl Object Environment 0.9999
Perl Object Environment is a Perl multitasking framework that lends itself to networking software. more>>
POE (Perl Object Environment) parcels out execution time among one or more tasks, called sessions. Sessions multitask through cooperation (at least until Perls threads become mainstream). That is, each session returns execution to POE as quickly as possible so it can parcel out time to the next.
POE includes a high-level component architecture. Components are modular, reusable pieces of programs. They perform common, often tedious tasks so programmers can work on more interesting things.
Several POE components have been written to handle client, server, and peer networking tasks. Because of them, POE has become a convenient and quick way to write multitasking network applications.
Anyone can write and publish POE components. The CPAN contains a [steadily growing list] of them. The POE Components List includes ones that havent been uploaded to the CPAN yet.
POE provides medium- and low-level concurrency functions. Components use them to perform their tasks. The functions are also available to programmers who prefer to avoid the overhead of components at the expense of writing more code. Components and custom sessions coexist because they all use the same basic functions.
POE supports graphical toolkits such as Tk and Gtk. It is the only Perl programming framework that does this. It also supports Curses, HTTP, and other user interfaces. POE programs can present multiple user interfaces at once.
Enhancements:
- A number of stability and performance fixes were done, including making the tests less prone to race conditions, improving the installation process, eliminating known resource leaks, and reducing CPU use when combined with Tk.
