The Eye Of Horus 0.2

The Eye Of Horus 0.2

The Eye Of Horus is a monitoring and alerting tool for computers. more>>
The Eye Of Horus is a monitoring and alerting tool for computers. Its mainly useful for monitoring network services (eg, HTTP or SMTP servers) and the internal status of Unix servers (eg, load, disk usage, process counts).

In that respect, its a lot like Nagios, but in my opinion its better. It lacks a few features Nagios has, but it is a very simple architecture to which they can easily be added.

Its a flexible thing made from independent modules with well-defined interfaces, making it easy to customise and extend, but out of the box itll monitor your servers and produce a nice HTML summary of their status - OK, the looks need a bit of work, but that will come soon, and it can optionally integrate with the excellent (and I mean excellent) RRDTool to store logs of statistics (response times, number of packages with known security holes, etc) - and link from the status page to nice graphs of the historical behaviour of these statistics.

HOW IT WORKS

The core of the system is horus-check.py, a Python script which reads a configuration file (specified on the command line). The configuration file specifies a list of services - either network services, in which case the host to run the check from and the host to run the check at are specified, or local services, in which case only the host to run the check from need be specified. In either case, if the host to run the check from is not specified, then it defaults to the local host.

The service types reference definitions in a file which is referenced from the configuration file. In the service definitions file, a shell command to check the service is given; this command must output service status in a defined format, as a single-line YAML list. The list must contain, at least, a single-word status (OK, WARNING, FAILURE, or UNKNOWN), then optionally numeric statistics, then optionally a status message. For example:

[OK]
[UNKNOWN]
[OK, { load: 0.5, users: 3 }]
[WARNING, { load: 3, users: 30 }]
[FAILURE, { load: 95, users: 300 }]
[UNKNOWN, { }, Could not find AWK executable]

When a check is to be performed from a remote host, Horus opens an ssh connection to that host. It is assumed that the user horus is run as will have an ssh key set up to enable it to ssh to all such hosts without requiring a password.

Having performed the checks, horus-check.py then:

Reads in the status database named in the configuration file
Updates the status database with the new status of hosts
Computes an overall system status (the worst non-unknown status of any checked service)
Examines the service dependencies, and marks any service whose state is no worse than might be expected (eg, no worse than the worst state of a service it depends upon) are automatically marked as quiet
Computes a list of differences between the old and new status (services added, services removed, services whose status has improved, services whose status has worsened)
If there are any differences, invokes a notification script (named in the configuration file) with them, along with the overall status
Invokes a logging script (named in the configuration file) with the new value of every statistic reported by the service checks; I will soon provide a sample logging script that uses RRDTool to generate nice graphs.

The status database (which is written in YAML, so easily accessible to user scripts) can then be used to generate HTML status report (see status.cgi).

MM3-WebAssistant Private 2009

MM3-WebAssistant Private 2009

Archives visited web pages with your browser to be used on- and offline. Offline each page is available with its original URL. There is no difference between surfing in the internet or archive. You can even use your bookmarks offline. Efficient use of the archive by marking and highlighting words. This proxy offline browser allows mobile users to access internet information when they dont have internet access. An ideal addition to every browser! more>>

MM3-WebAssistant Private - The offline browser is a personal proxy server sitting behind your regular browser (Firefox, IE, Safari, Opera - whatever!), silently and speedily handling all the network traffic. Unlike most offline browsers with this concept, you dont have to specifically tell WebAssistant to capture a website - it remembers everything you see, automatically adding new pages to the cache. WebAssistant updates your cached pages (in the background) so youve always got the latest version to hand. Theres no difference between surfing the web and surfing your archive; you can even use your bookmarks or search your pages offline when you dont have a network connection.

Your Benefits:

Work offline (train, plane, beach - wherever you like) without worrying that you have the info you need. Reduces the pressure of knowing what to save, and the necessity for repeating browsing sessions looking for something that was missed.

Incorporate the web into presentations or talks where you dont have internet access. You can sure youll always have the page you need with WebAssistant.

Mobile users have the flexibility of accessing information from the web without having to worry about expensive access points. Shun overpriced wifi access ports - or at least only pay for what you really need.

Important Features:

Automatically archive all pages visited.

Accelerates in the web online browsing or updates the archive.

No difference between on- and offline browsing.

Links to resources of cache archives are marked for quick navigation.

Compare HTML pages from internet and archive. The changes are highlighted.

Browse and interactive navigation in the original hierarchy of downloaded pages.

Burn a site (or many sites) to CD for backup or archive.

Supports the protocols HTTP and FTP.

Supplied with a detailed manual, a simple and completely comprehensive installation and deinstallation.

The reader is an ideal addition to every browser!

## User-defined Chains ##

Chain KEEP_STATE
The KEEP_STATE chain holds a few rules for generic stateful packet filtering.
This chain is called from many of the INPUT/OUTPUT chains to DROP "INVALID"
and perhaps "UNCLEAN" packets and allow other packets from "RELATED" or
"ESTABLISHED" connections.

CHECK_FLAGS
The CHECK_FLAGS chain contains a few rules to filter based on TCP flags.
These rules do indeed filter mainly bogus/malicious traffic(scans, etc). It
would be a good idea to keep an eye on what these rules send to the logs.
Null scans are also logged and dropped, in the mangle table.

DENY_PORTS
The DENY_PORTS chains contains a few rules to DROP and/or LOG packets based
on the source and/or destination port number of the packet.

Packets destined to/from the following ports are dropped by default in the script. These are just some examples of some commonly used ports that certain daemons/trojans/DDoS agents may utilize.

## TCP ##
137:139 SMB
2049 NFS
6000:6063 X
20034 Netbus 2 Pro
12345:12346 Netbus
27374 SubSeven
27665,27444,31335 Trinoo
10498,12754 Mstream

## UDP ##
2049 NFS
31337 BO2k
27444,31335 Trinoo
10498 mstream

These are just examples to stare at. They guarantee no real protection against the associated trojans.

For more common port numbers check out:
http://www.sans.org/newlook/resources/IDFAQ/oddports.htm

ALLOW_PORTS
The ALLOW_PORTS chain simply ACCEPTs packets based on port number. If you have
a default FORWARD policy of DROP, then you would need to utilize a chain like
this if you are DNATing/routing connections behind the firewall or perhaps
running services on(!!!) the firewall.

ALLOW_ICMP
The ALLOW_ICMP chains simply allows packets based on ICMP type. Currently
the firewall allows the flow of the following ICMP types:
Echo Reply (pong)
Destination Unreachable
Echo Request (ping)
TTL Exceeded (traceroute)

SRC_EGRESS && DST_EGRESS
The SRC_EGRESS and DST_EGRESS chains filter packets that have a source or
destination IP address matching an array of private or reserved subnets.

TOS_OUTPUT
The TOS_OUTPUT chain exists in the mangle table and mangles the TOS(Type
of Service) field in the IP header of locally generated, outgoing packets.

TOS_PREROUTING
The TOS_PREROUTING chain exists in the mangle table and mangles the TOS(Type
of Service) field in the IP header of packets being routed through the firewall.

The following user-defined chains are pretty obvious. The firewall script is designed to have a user-defined INPUT and OUTPUT chain for every available interface. From these user-defined chains are called the user-defined chains
mentioned above, which I call "Special Chains". The chains below are then called by the built-in INPUT/OUTPUT/FORWARD chains. This isnt really the rule, of course, alot of the user-defined chains mentioned above are called directly from the built-in INPUT/OUTPUT/FORWARD chains. This is done to assure proper flow of the packets through the filters.

Puppy Linux 4.2.1

Puppy Linux 4.2.1

Puppy Linux provides you with a perfect and very useful evolutionary operating system which is based on GNU Linux. more>>

Puppy Linux 4.2.1 provides you with a perfect and very useful evolutionary operating system which is based on GNU Linux. Whats different here is that Puppy is extraordinarily small, yet quite full featured. Puppy Linux can boot into a 64MB ramdisk, and that's it, the whole caboodle runs in RAM. Unlike live CD distributions that have to keep pulling stuff off the CD, Puppy in its entirety loads into RAM. This means that all applications start in the blink of an eye and respond to user input instantly.

Major Features:

  1. Puppy Linux has the ability to boot off a flash card or any USB memory device (flash-Puppy), CDROM (live-Puppy), Zip disk or LS/120/240 Superdisk (zippy-Puppy), floppy disks (floppy-Puppy), internal hard drive (hard-Puppy).
  2. Puppy occupies about 50-60M on my USB Flash drive, CDROM, or whatever is the storage media.
  3. When Puppy boots, everything uncompressed into a RAM area that we call a "ramdisk". The live-CD will bootup on systems with only 32M RAM, but the more RAM you have the more Puppy is able to keep files permanently in ramdisk hence more speed. A PC with 128M RAM is the recommended minimum.
  4. Note that Puppy will automatically use a swap partition if it exists. When booting from a USB Flash device, Puppy tries to load all the Flash files into physical RAM, but if there is not enough RAM then Puppy is able to copy the excess to a swap partition if it exists. This eliminates writes to the Flash memory during a session, greatly extending its life span.
  5. You may need to have a swap partition to run Firefox or Mozilla on PCs with less than 64M RAM. Certainly, for a PC with only 32M RAM, a swap partition is necessary to run most of the large GUI applications.

Enhancements:

  • CUPS-1.3.10 regressed from 1.4b2 to resolve ongoing issues with CUPS printing.
  • Fixed printing from Geany, Leafpad and Gnumeric using CUPS-1.3.10
  • Abiword-2.6.3 with 2.6.6 plugins has been patched for improved .doc & .docx support (Liberation ttf fonts required for some documents)
  • Pwidgets updated to 2.0.8
  • Pcrypt updated to 17 May 2009 release and now requires Ccrypt to function. Bcrypt has been dropped in consequence.
  • Ccrypt-1.7 added as dependency for Pcrypt
  • MIME-types updated in Rox-2.6.1
  • Patches for gtk+ Xinput and b43 broadcom network driver
  • Pmusic updated to 0.6.4
  • Pschedule updated to 0.7
  • Plus previously issued patches for nbtscan, mountcifs, jwm-tray, xsane, network wizard (now at April 4 release), mtpaint-snapshot, gtk+2.12.1-Xinput-fix and pcp (Puppy control panel).
