Performance Co-Pilot 2.5.0

Performance Co-Pilot 2.5.0

Performance Co-Pilot is a performance monitoring toolkit and API. more>>
Performance Co-Pilot (PCP) is a framework and services to support system-level performance monitoring and performance management.
The services offered by PCP are especially attractive for those tackling harder system-level performance problems. For example this may involve a transient performance degradation, or correlating end-user quality of service with platform activity, or diagnosing some complex interaction between resource demands on a single system, or management of performance on large systems with lots of "moving parts".
The distributed PCP architecture makes it especially useful for those seeking centralized monitoring of distributed processing (e.g. in a cluster or webserver farm environment), especially where a large number hosts are involved.
Main features:
- A single API for accessing the performance data that hides details of where the data comes from and how it was captured and imported into the PCP framework.
- A client-server architecture allows multiple clients to monitor the same host, and a single client to monitor multiple hosts (e.g. in a Beowulf cluster). This enables centralized monitoring of distributed processing.
- Integrated archive logging and replay so a client application can use the same API to process real-time data from a host or historical data from an archive.
- The framework supports APIs and configuration file formats that enable the scope of performance monitoring to be extended at all levels.
- An "plugin" framework (libraries, APIs, agents and daemon) to collect performance data from multiple sources on a single host, e.g. from the hardware, the kernel, the service layers, the application libraries, and the applications themselves.
- Libraries and sample implementations encourage the development of new "plugins" (or agents) to capture and export the performance data that matters in your application environment, along side the other generic performance data.
- An endian-safe transport layer for moving performance metrics between the collector and the monitoring applications over TCP/IP. This means an IRIX desktop with PCP can monitor one or more Linux systems with the Open Source release of PCP installed.
- A Linux agent that exports a broad range of performance data from most kernels circa 2.0.36 (RedHat 5.2) or later. This includes coverage of activity in the areas of: CPU, disk, memory, swapping, network, NFS, RPC, filesystems and all the per-process statistics.
- Other agents export performance data from:
- Web server activity logs
- arbitrary application-level tracing (via a PCP trace library)
- Cisco routers
- sendmail
- the mail queue
- the PCP infrastructure itself
- Assorted simple monitoring tools that use the PCP APIs to retrieve and display either arbitrary performance metrics, or specific groups of metrics (as in pmstat a cluster-aware vmstat lookalike).
- The PCP inference engine supports automated monitoring through a rule-based language and interpreter that performs user-defined actions when rule predicates are found to be true.

my $form = Paper::Specs->find( brand => "Avery", code => "1234");

use Paper::Specs units => "cm", brand => "Avery";
my $form = Paper::Specs->find( code => "1234");

# location of first label on sheet
my ($xpos, $ypos) = $form->label_location( 1, 1);
my ($h, $w) = $form->label_size;

I appologise in advance for the hasty nature of this code. I want to get it out to support some other code I am writing. I promise to revisit it shortly to clear up the rough patches - however your valuable input is most welcome.

CAVEAT ALPHA CODE - This is a preliminary module and will be subject to fluctuations in API and structure based on feedback from users.

I expect that there will be some interest in this code and it should firm up quickly.

If this module does not deliver what you are looking for then you are encouraged to contact the author and voice your needs!

OTHER LABELS - I know about the Labels.xml file which is part of OpenOffice but have not figured out how it is encoded. I have the gLabels specifications file too. I plan to use these to help populate the data for this module.

pcpViewer is a 3D viewer of data gathered through the excellent "Performance Co-Pilot" library.

You can see usage of CPU time, net devices, memory, hard drives, and virtually any data exported by the pcp library and daemon.

I first started this "pet project" as a 3D xosview replacement (thanks for inspiration), so one of the goal is to get the same level of responsiveness as xosview.

Pilot-QOF 0.1.5

Pilot-QOF 0.1.5

Pilot-QOF converts Palm databases to queriable objects. more>>
Pilot-QOF converts Palm databases to queriable objects. A Palm database record is an instance of the object, called an Entity.
Objects are collated to form one data source, called books, that can contain any number of different objects - depending on the application running QOF. Pilot-QOF writes selected palm data to QSF XML offline storage and running SQL-type queries on the live data or XML file.
Pilot-QOF currently supports the four main applications (Expenses, Contacts, Calendar and ToDo) and work is now progressing to support other free software Palm databases like PCash and FreeCoins.
Liberate your Palm data to use in any number of other applications and scripts.
QOF provides a set of C language utilities for performing generic structured complex queries on a set of data held by a set of C/C++ objects. This framework allows programmers to add query support to their applications without having to hook into a SQL Database.
QOF provides the framework, the new QOF XML backend (QSF) provides the off-line storage and a format for a data stream between different applications, including converting QOF objects.
QOF frees the data from the application, allowing queries, data mining, abstraction and data interchange without having to recompile the original application, let alone program the filters. Central to QOF are the ideas of databases and objects.
A Palm database is an object in QOF. A Palm database record is an instance of the object, called an Entity. QOF then collates all supported objects to form one data source that can be queried. QOF allows the programmer to easily find all other instances of any one type, just by having one instance of that type.
Objects are collected in books and a book can contain any number of different objects - depending on the application running QOF. The book is the central data source within QOF and a book can be queried or written out to XML using the QOF Serialisation Format: QSF.
In real terms, QOF will be running as a framework around the libpisock library from pilot-link so the offline storage, (QSF XML), will be written by pilot-qof. Pilot-link itself does not directly support users who cross timezones with their Palm - it may be wise that users are reminded that if timezone issues are important to their DateBook or Expenses data, the user should take the sensible precaution of changing the Palm Preferences to use the same timezone as the computer running pilot-qof.
Once in QOF, all dates and times are UTC so the QSF XML files can be freely exchanged across timezones without complication.
Pilot-QOF is free software relased under the GPL license.
Enhancements:
- Ensure all help output is available for translation.

Role Playing Tools 1.1

Role Playing Tools 1.1

Role Playing Tools extends the pen and paper role playing tabletop to the computer. more>>
Role Playing Tools extends the pen and paper role playing tabletop to the computer by providing a die rolling tool with a full expression language including Javascript functions, tabbed rolling bars, quick summation features, and the ability to save and restore sessions. There is also a client and server map sharing tool. Both are intended to be simple and powerful and enhance the game, not distract from it.

We found that we wanted to augment our pen-and-paper roleplaying (primarily 3.5ed D&D) with computer aids.

These tools extend and augment our traditional playing style. They are not a role playing game by themselves, nor are they meant to replace everything at the D&D table.

DiceToolis a simple but powerful expression parser that has built in functions for random number generation and can be further extended by JavaScript to do all sorts of calculations.
MapToolis an elegant graphical tool to share maps (images) and map data (drawings, markers, grid placement) in a client/server fashion between multiple players.
TokenToolis an accessory to MapTool. Drag any image onto the workspace and use the mouse to move and zoom the image in the reticle. Then drag from the preview pane directly onto MapTool -- or File->Save to save a png file.

Matrix Public Net spreads short voice messages through a web of trust. more>>
Matrix Public Net spreads short voice messages through a web of trust; credibility decays until a threshold where the message is dropped.

Matrix Public Net comes with a program for recording and sending messages as well as plugins for XMMS and WinAmp that play received messages.

Extending the Blogosphere

This is a proposal for the extension of the Blogosphere, the network of Weblogs.
Individual Blogs are connected by their users implicitly: a community emerges, because users regularly read and comment on others entries. By making this connexions explicit, a web of trust is created which functions like a reputation mechanism.

The resulting system leverages the advantages of social networks for the distribution of news. It can be implemented as a decentralised system, with a simple extension to the Blogosphere.

The system is explained in a paper and in the presentation at the Mobile Entertainment conference in Manchester.

The RSS MPN-Interest module is the first part of this extension.
