Pooka 050329
Pooka is an email client written in Java, using the Javamail API. more>>
Pooka is an email client written in Java, using the Javamail API. It supports email through the IMAP (connected and disconnected) and POP3 protocols. Outgoing mail is sent using SMTP.
Pooka is in beta release but is very stable and has plenty of features.
There are two different builds of Pooka available: the 1.0 versions which are for JDK 1.2.x and 1.3.x and the 1.1 versions which are for JDK 1.4.x. The 1.0 releases are pretty much only going to get bugfixes from now on; all new features (such as, when I find time for it, PGP support and spam filters) are going to go into the JDK 1.4 version.
Main features:
- IMAP (connected and disconnected, including running IMAP over SSL)
- POP3
- SMTP
- mbox (not recommended)
- Desktop (Eudora-like)
- Preview (Outlook-like)
- Send mail
- Read mail
- Forward mail (with or without attachments)
- Reply to mail (with or without attachments)
- Delete mail
- Move mail to folder
- Save mail as file
- Save attachment
- Open attachment
- Signatures
- Print mail
- Sent folder (optional)
- Trash folder (optional)
- Folder search
- Filters
- Display filters
- Context-sensitive color encoding
- Support for multiple mail acounts
- Support for multiple outgoing mail addresses
- Address book

Photorec 6.6
PhotoRec is a small tool to recover pictures from digital camera memory. more>>
PhotoRec is a small tool to recover pictures from digital camera memory. Photorec software searches for MOV and JPEG headers, and because there is (usually) no data fragmentation, it can recover the whole file.
It can recover data from CompactFlash, Memory Stick, SecureDigital, SmartMedia, Microdrive, MMC, USB Memory Drives...
PhotoRec is safe to use, it will never attempt to write to the drive or memory support you are about to recover from. Recovered files are instead written in the directory from where you are running the PhotoRec program.
Photorec ignores the filesystem, this way it works even if the filesystem is severely damaged.
It can recover lost files at least from:
- FAT,
- NTFS,
- EXT2/EXT3 filesystem
Digital Camera
PhotoRec has been successfully tested with:
- Canon EOS300D, 10D
- HP PhotoSmart 620, 850, 935
- Nikon CoolPix 775, 5700
- Olympus C350N, C860L, Mju 400 Digital, Stylus 300
- Sony DSC-P9
- Praktica DCZ-3.4

Brutus 1.1.27 (evolution-brutus)
Brutus is an Open Source connector for Exchange 5.5, 2000 and 2003, to put it short. more>>
Brutus is an Open Source connector for Exchange 5.5, 2000 and 2003, to put it short. Our aim is to scratch one of the most annoying itches that the Open Source community have endured. This particular itch has been experienced for almost a decade.
The problem that we are addressing is the problem of platform independent access for client applications to Microsoft Exchange from version 5.5 onwards.
Our solution to this problem will enable a feature-by-feature compatible Microsoft Outlook replacement for Linux, Microsoft Windows, the BSDs or almost any other platform.
How do we do it?
We have developed a CORBA based framework on top of the Messaging Application Programming Interface commonly known as MAPI.
Our development framework is offering client applications MAPI based access to any MS Exchange server from version 5.5 onwards. We believe that we are providing the Open Source community with a development framework that are superior to any other approach.
Our solution is distributed under the GNU General Public License (commonly known as the "GPL") or a commercial license.
Why do we do it?
We feel that there is a strong customer need for a non-Microsoft client application with full Exchange integration that is feature-by-feature comparable with Microsoft Outlook.
The only technically feasible way to achieve this level of integration is to build a client access framework on top of MAPI.
Out strategy is therefore to provide this framework to the Open Source community free of charge under the GPL and to the any commercial entity under a commercial license.
Enhancements:
- Support for OpenSUSE 10.2 was added.
- brutus-keyring is now used instead of gnome-keyring.
- A thread storm when updating the folder summary is now avoided.

smtpauth 0.94
smtpauth is a authenticating proxy for servers without SMTP AUTH. more>>
smtpauth is a authenticating proxy for servers without SMTP AUTH.
Use smtpauth and stunnel programs to add SMTP AUTH (PLAIN, LOGIN) support to any SMTP server. Clients can authenticate over SSL port 465 or cleartext port 587, and authentication is fully logged via syslog.
Works with JBMail, Pegasus Mail, Mozilla Thunderbird, MS Outlook...
This software is really an interim solution until our favourite MTA(s) support SSL/TLS and SMTP AUTH directly. For now I prefer using external programs to provide this functionality rather than patching MTA source. I designed this software to work with my Postfix server, but smtpauth also works with sendmail and just about any other SMTP server.
Installation:
1. Compile and install binary.
make
Copy smtpauth to /usr/sbin, owned by root, mode 755
2. Create special user smtpauth with its own group, no login allowed.
Note that smtpauth will immediately exit with an error if invoked as root.
It must be run from a low privilege account, for security.
3. [For SSL, port 465] Configure stunnel.conf. Change domain for your site.
setuid = smtpauth
setgid = smtpauth
debug = auth.notice
client = no
[smtps]
accept = 465
exec = /usr/sbin/smtpauth
execargs = smtpauth domain 127.0.0.1
4. Configure /etc/smtpauth.conf
This file should only be readable by the smtpauth user, since it stores plain
passwords. It consists of single lines containing usernames and passwords with
whitespace separating. Blank lines and comment lines starting # are ignored.
user1 pass1

5. [For SSL, port 465] Start up stunnel
This will create a server running as smtpauth on port smtps/465. When SMTP clients
connect (SSL/TLS) the smtpauth program is launched and provides authentication
service through to 127.0.0.1:25, as a proxy. Your actual SMTP server will accept
mail because that connection is local. The mail headers will include X-SMTP-AUTH
indicating the username. Success and failures will be logged via syslog.
6. [For cleartext, port 587] Configure cleartext submission service in inetd
Since inetd (when started with -W) also supports wrapping, the smtpauth proxy
can be run straight out of here too. Note that this is somewhat risky, because
there will be no SSL/TLS encryption on the submission port (587).
Again, change domain for your site (e.g. mail.yoursite.tld)
submission stream tcp nowait smtpauth /usr/sbin/smtpauth smtpauth domain 127.0.0.1
<<lessUse smtpauth and stunnel programs to add SMTP AUTH (PLAIN, LOGIN) support to any SMTP server.
Change domain for your site.
setuid = smtpauth
setgid = smtpauth
debug = auth.notice
client = no
[smtps]
accept = 465
exec = /usr/sbin/smtpauth
execargs = smtpauth domain 127.0.0.1
4. Configure /etc/smtpauth.conf
This file should only be readable by the smtpauth user, since it stores plain
passwords. It consists of single lines containing usernames and passwords with
whitespace separating. Blank lines and comment lines starting # are ignored.

PyCosmos 0.4.0
PyCosmos is a Python script for sending SMS using MyCosmos. more>>
PyCosmos is a Python script for sending SMS using MyCosmos.
PyCosmos is a script that allows the user to send SMS using the MyCosmos portal of COSMOTE in Greece.
It comes in command-line and GTK versions and it is cross-platform (tested on Windows and Linux). It uses httplib2. The included Win32 binaries require the GTK runtime.
The MyCosmos portal uses the MS Outlook Web Access web application, which is rather IE-oriented. Moreover, it uses a bunch of JScripts that runs locally on browser and initially (until a few weeks ago) the SMS option was not accessible directly in other (i.e. Firefox) browsers.
In an effort to create an automated script that would allow a MyCosmos user to bypass all this bloat and easily send a SMS, I found out that the authentication system having been used to allow sending of SMS through MyCosmos portal did not use the Session Cookie but a "SecureHash" calculated by the mobile number, a salt string and the current year. This is no reverse engineering; the whole code was open and executed in Internet Explorer browser through vw_navbar.js.
Therefore, it was possible to send an SMS by just providing a COSMOTE mobile number that has activated the MyCosmos portal. :) Most users were already aware of such a security bypass, by bookmarking the SMS sending webpage in order to use it in Firefox.
Recently, COSMOTE changed the authentication system (just before the initial release of PyCosmos 0.31), taking under consideration the Session cookie. PyCosmos 0.4 was born, taking under consideration the new authentication system of MyCosmos portal, and now requiring username and password to work. Nevertheless, it seems that some software engineers back in MyCosmos really loved the old (no-)authentication system, and still love it, so PyCosmos 0.31 is dedicated to them.
