Automated Linux From Scratch 2.2

Automated Linux From Scratch 2.2

Automated Linux From Scratch creates the generic framework for an extendable system builder and package installer. more>>
Automated Linux From Scratch (ALFS) is a project that creates the generic framework for an extendable system builder and package installer.

Why would I want to use ALFS?

After having gone through the LFS and BLFS books more than 2 or 3 times, you will quickly appreciate the ability to automate the task of compiling the software you want for your systems.

What can I do with ALFS?

The goal of ALFS is to automate the process of creating an LFS system. It seeks to make the process of building LFS easier and more efficient while still providing flexibility by granting the user total control and insight into the compilation and management of his LFS build.

How is ALFS implemented?

nALFS

The first ALFS implementation was nALFS by Neven Has. nALFS is a small program written in C. It first parses an XML profile that contains information concerning the LFS build process into a series of internal commands. It can then execute these at your discretion, thus automating the compilation of LFS.

jhalfs

Currently, the official implementation is jhalfs. Originally created by Jeremy Huntwork, but since developed and maintained by Manuel Canales Esparcia and George Boudreau, jhalfs has become a light-weight, practical method of automating an LFS build. jhalfs is a Bash shell script that makes use of Subversion and xsltproc to first download the XML sources of the Linux From Scratch book and then extract any necessary commands, placing them into executable shell scripts. If you do not already have the necessary source packages in place on your system jhalfs can fetch them. Finally, jhalfs generates a Makefile which will control the execution of the shell scripts, allowing for recovery if the build should encounter an error. Since jhalfs extracts its commands to run directly from the LFS book, there are no profiles to edit or maintain.

Note: The 2.2 version of jhalfs has been released. A tarball can been downloaded from http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/alfs/downloads/jhalfs/stable/.

alfs

There are many in-depth features that have been requested for future ALFS implementations. Because of this, development has been slated for an entirely new build tool which will be called alfs. To see a list of features that will appear in alfs, please read our Software Requirements Specification. If you wish to help develop this new tool, please subscribe to the alfs-discuss mailing list and leave a note there explaining your desire to help.

HiveMind 1.0

HiveMind 1.0

HiveMind is a services and configuration microkernel. more>>
HiveMind project is a services and configuration microkernel:
- Services: HiveMind services are POJOs (Plain Old Java Objects) that can be easily accessed and combined. Each service ideally defines a Java interface it implements (but this is no longer mandatory). HiveMind takes care of instantiating and configuring each service just as necessary. HiveMind lets services collaborate with each other via dependency injection.
- Configuration: HiveMind allows you to provide complex configuration data to your services in a format you define. HiveMind will integrate the contributions of such data from multiple modules and convert it all into data objects for you. HiveMind configurations allow for powerful, data-driven solutions which combine seemlessly with the service architecture.
- Microkernel: HiveMind is a framework for creating applications, not an application, or even an application server, itself. The core of HiveMind is the startup logic that knows how to parse and understand the module deployment descriptors, and use that information to instantiate and initialize all those services and configurations.
In HiveMind, a service is an implementation of a Java interface. Unlike other SOAs (Service Oriented Architectures, such as a SOAP, or EJBs), HiveMind is explicitly about combining Java code within a single JVM. HiveMind uses a descriptor to describe different services, their lifecycles, and how they are combined. HiveMind takes care of thread-safe, just-in-time creation of singleton service objects so your code doesnt have to.
HiveMind represents a generous donation of code to the Apache Software Foundation by WebCT.
HiveMind originated from internal requirements for a flexible, loosely-coupled configuration management and services framework for WebCTs industry-leading flagship enterprise e-learning product, Vista.
Several individuals in WebCTs research and development team, in addition to Howard Lewis Ship, contributed to the requirements and concepts behind HiveMinds initial set of functionality. These include Martin Bayly, Diane Bennett, Bill Bilic, Michael Kerr, Prashant Nayak, Bill Richard and Ajay Sharda. HiveMind is already in use as a significant part of Vista.

arianne 0.12

arianne 0.12

arianne is a multiplayer online game engine project. more>>
Arianne is a multiplayer online games framework and engine to develop turn based and real time games.

It provides a simple way of creating games on a portable and robust server architecture. The server is coded in Java and uses Python for your game description, provides a MySQL backend and uses an UDP transport channel to communicate with dozens of players.

Our reference client engines are coded using Java and the C language in order to achieve maximum portability.

Arianne has been in development since 1999 and has evolved from a tiny application written in pseudo-C++ to a powerful, expandable but simple server framework, running on the Java platform, and a portable client framework, written in bare C to allow total portability of ariannes clients. Ariannes server is totally client agnostic.

Since the beginning, the key concept at the heart of Ariannes development has been KISS: Keep it simple, stupid!

Arianne games are playable. It now hosts several games:

* a multiplayer Gladiators fighting game
* a multiplayer Pacman game

All our efforts are supported by ariannes server: Marauroa.

Marauroa is completely written in Java using a multithreaded server architecture with a UDP oriented network protocol, a MySQL based persistence engine and a flexible game system. The game system is totally expandable and modifiable by game developers and is able to run Python scripts defining the games rules.

Marauroa is based on a design philosophy we called Action/Perception. Each turn a perception is send to the clients explaining what they currently perceive. Clients can ask the server to perform any action in their name using actions. Marauroa is totally game agnostic and makes very little assumptions about what are you trying to do, allowing a great freedom to create any game type.

Bugs are facts of life, they just happen.

On Arianne we care about code quality so code is fully tested using Test Units with JUnit and cppunit, so all modules are tested for most common cases, allowing a better quality software to be deployed.

The name originated from the Greek name Ariadne. (Latin; Arianna and from French; Arianne). Ariadne is a famous character in Greek mythology. She was the daughter of King Minos of Crete and she was in love with Theseus, the Athenian hero who killed the Minotaur ( a half human, half bull creature).

Theseus married her, however, then later left her alone on the island of Naxos. Ariadne later married Dionisos the God of Wine. The name Ariadne originates from the ancient Greek words ari which means intelligent and adnis which means pure (as in a virgin). Hence, the daughters of the Romans and Greeks where often called by this name.

TDFS r3

TDFS r3

TDFS is a proof-of-concept implementation of distributed file system as a layer above normal file systems. more>>
TDFS stands for "Trivially distributed file system", and is a proof-of-concept implementation of distributed file system as a ("stacked") layer above normal file systems. It uses the FUSE libraries and subsystem to implement this operation in userland.
NOTE:This is currently a proof-of-concept implementation, not ready for production use! I would appreciate any feedback about this project - if it works or if it doesnt work. Since Im doing this in my spare time, it will take a long time for me to catch all bugs alone; if you need to speed this project up, consider posting ind the forums and/or submitting patches. You can contact me either personally or, better, via the SourceForge forums for the project.
The goal of TDFS is to solve single-writer-multiple-readers distribution of file system data (also called single-master-multiple-slave). In this scenario all writes happen (or originate) on one computer, and are propagated to others. Read requests can go to either the master or the slaves, and are served locally. Read requests dont go over the network, so this system doesnt offer strict synchronization. Some usages for this scenario are:
- Hot backups - all data is immediately propagated to a backup machine
- Archival - data is read-mostly and it helps to make it available on large number of machines
- Load balancing - one machine generates the data (possibly from a database) but is not a web server. Other machines are web servers and serve their local copy of the data. This is also useful as a separation of privileges (DMZ-style).
For example: in a scenario with one master and two slaves, the data is stored three times, once on each machine.

Linux From Scratch 6.2-3

Linux From Scratch 6.2-3

Linux From Scratch are instructions to create your own custom Linux system from scratch. more>>
Linux From Scratch (LFS) is a project that provides you with the steps necessary to build your own custom Linux system.
There are a lot of reasons why somebody would want to install an LFS system. The question most people raise is "why go through all the hassle of manually installing a Linux system from scratch when you can just download an existing distribution?". That is a valid question which I hope to answer for you.
The most important reason for LFSs existence is teaching people how a Linux system works internally. Building an LFS system teaches you about all that makes Linux tick, how things work together, and depend on each other. And most importantly, how to customize it to your own taste and needs.
One of the key benefits of LFS is that you are in control over your system without having to rely on somebody elses Linux implementation. You are in the drivers seat now and are able to dictate every single thing such as the directory layout and boot script setup. You will also know exactly where, why and how programs are installed.
Another benefit of LFS is that you can create a very compact Linux system. When you install a regular distribution, you end up installing a lot of programs you probably would never use. Theyre just sitting there taking up (precious) disk space. Its not hard to get an LFS system installed under 100 MB. Does that still sound like a lot? A few of us have been working on creating a very small embedded LFS system. We installed a system that was just enough to run the Apache web server; total disk space usage was aproximately 8 MB. With further stripping, that can be brought down to 5 MB or less. Try that with a regular distribution.
If we were to compare a Linux distribution with a hamburger you buy at a supermarket or fast-food restaurant, you would end up eating it without knowing precisely what it is you are eating, whereas LFS gives you the ingredients to make a hamburger. This allows you to carefully inspect it, remove unwanted ingredients, and at the same time allow you to add ingredients to enhance the flavour of your hamburger. When you are satisfied with the ingredients, you go on to the next part of putting it together. You now have the chance to make it just the way you like it: broil it, bake it, deep-fry it, barbeque it, or eat it raw.
Another analogy that we can use is that of comparing LFS with a finished house. LFS will give you the skeleton of a house, but its up to you to install plumbing, electrical outlets, kitchen, bathtub, wallpaper, etc.
Another advantage of a custom built Linux system is added security. You will compile the entire system from source, thus allowing you to audit everything, if you wish to do so, and apply all the security patches you want or need to apply. You dont have to wait for somebody else to provide a new binary package that fixes a security hole. Besides, you have no guarantee that the new package actually fixes the problem (adequately). You never truly know whether a security hole is fixed or not unless you do it yourself.
Enhancements:
- The LFS LiveCD Team is proud to announce the release of the x86-6.2-3 version of LFS LiveCD. This version is built using LFS 6.2 and many Beyond Linux From Scratch packages from the Subversion branch. Source packages for LFS 6.2, and the LFS book itself, are included on the live CD. The CD is also suitable as a host for building x86 and x86_64 Cross LFS systems. Other features and bugfixes: the CD supports hibernation; the CD file system can be written to; the CD contains a visually pleasing and easy-to-use window manager, XFce...

Beyond Linux From Scratch 6.2.0

Beyond Linux From Scratch 6.2.0

Beyond Linux From Scratch or BLFS in short, is a project that continues where the LFS book finishes. more>>
Beyond Linux From Scratch or BLFS in short, is a project that continues where the LFS book finishes. It assists users in developing their systems according to their needs by providing a broad range of instructions for installing and configuring various packages on top of a base LFS system.
Why would I want a BLFS system?
If you are wondering why you would want a BLFS system or dont know what LFS is then you dont want to be here just yet - you should head over to the LFS Project Homepage where all will be explained.
What can I do with my BLFS system?
Nearly anything! An LFS system is primed to become a system that fits whatever need you have. BLFS is the book that takes you down your own custom path. You could build an office workstation, a multimedia desktop, a router, a server, or all of the above! And the best part is you only install what you need.
Enhancements:
- Version 6.2.0 of BLFS has been released. Version 6.2.0 is the complement to the LFS 6.2 book. More time has elapsed between the release of the previous version (6.1) and this one than in any other release cycle. Much of this is due to the fact that LFS 6.2 took much longer to be released than was originally anticipated. Many new packages have been introduced in the 6.2.0 version, as well as many updates, refinements and additions to the existing packages.

Erika Educational is a a fully fledged and fully functional real-time operating system (RTOS) for embedded devices.

Erika Educational is a reduced GPL-licensed release of Erika Enterprise: ideal for educational purposes, free software, and available for download at no cost.

Erika Educational should not be seen as a reduced set of Erika Enterprise. Therefore, please do not consider Erika Educational for evaluating the characteristics and performance of Erika Enterprise. While the two originated from the same source code base, Erika Enterprise has been completely redesigned and rewritten to meet industrial needs, whereas Erika Educational have been adapted to 8 bit educational architectures.

Impressions based on Erika Educational should not be applied to Erika Enterprise, as their feature sets are different, and they are, in practice, two different projects, with two different code bases.

Quadromania 0.2

Quadromania 0.2

Quadromania project is a board game written in C with SDL. more>>
Quadromania project is a board game written in C with SDL.

Your task is to restore the originating board filled with red stones. The computer will pick a named amount of 3x3 tile sets and will flip the colours of the selected tiles.

This means a red tile will become green, a green one the next colour in the amount of colours, red again in the simplest case. You select the amount of colours to use and the amount of initial rotations.

In the running game click on the center point of a 3x3 tile set to exchange that selected set following the rules above. Restore the board full of red stones before you reach the limit of maximum turns.

Quadromania is a work in progress. I currently lack the time to do a decent development on it. However the current alpha release is somewhat playable and working.

Visitors Web Log Analyzer 0.61

Visitors Web Log Analyzer 0.61

Visitors is a very fast Web log analyzer. more>>
Visitors is a very fast web log analyzer for Linux, Windows, and other Unix-like operating systems. It takes as input a web server log file, and outputs statistics in form of different reports. The design principles are very different compared to other software of the same type:
No installation required, can process up to 150,000 lines of log entries per second in fast computers (20MB/s with my log files average length).
Designed to be executed by the command line, output html and text reports. The text report can be used in pipe to less to check web stats from ssh.
Support for real time statistics with the Visitors Stream Mode introduced with version 0.3.
To specify the log format is not needed at all. Works out of box with apache and most other web servers with a standard log format (see the documentation for more information on the format).
Its a portable C program, can be compiled on many different systems. Binaries for Windows systems are in the Download section of this page.
The produced html report doesnt contain images or external CSS, is self-contained, you can send it by email to users.
Visitors is free software (and of course, freeware), under the terms of the GPL license. You dont need to pay to use it. Visitors is supported, if you want a custom version made directly by the original author for a modest price, contact me at antirez (at) invece.org. ISPs may take advantage of the high processing speed.
Main features:
- Requested pages.
- Requested images.
- Referers by hits and age.
- Unique visitors in each day.
- Page views per visit.
- Pages accessed by the Google crawler (and the date of googles last access on every page).
- Percentage of visits originated from Google searches for every day.
- Users navigation patterns (web trails).
- Keyphrases used in Google searches.
- User agents.
- Weekdays and Hours distributions of accesses.
- Weekdays/Hours combined bidimentional map.
- Month/Year combined bidimentional map.
- Visual path analysis with Graphviz.
- Operating systems, browsers and domains popularity.
- 404 errors.
Enhancements:
- This release adds an important bugfix in the unique visitors algorithm.
- The output is now nearer to reality (though unique visitors stats are always a guess without the use of a cookie).

Yosis Anti-Spam POP3 fIlter bot 0.09

yaspi s a POP3 mail-scanner. more>>
yaspi (Yosis Anti-Spam POP3 fIlter bot) is a POP3 mail-scanner specifically made to combat mail bombings caused by viruses (i.e. Swen). It connects to the POP3 server, inspects the messages, and deletes the infected ones by itself automatically without ever downloading them.
yaspi most interesting feature is that it can automatically send abuse reports to the ISPs where the mails were originated. This way, most infected machines will be either disinfected or disconnected from the Internet (and so, sending infected mails!).
Main features:
- its free, distributed under the GNU GPL
- runs under Windows and Unix/Linux (maybe under Mac OS X, but untested)
- virus detecting rules are fully customizable
- integrated with Ricochet to send abuse reports
Enhancements:
- yaspi was killing its own messages, new rule added to let them pass
- new GUI available, still alfa, have several know bugs (but its not going to corrupt your mailbox, I hope!).

vtkContainers 0.3

vtkContainers 0.3

vtkContainers is a container library for VTK. more>>
vtkContainers is a container library for VTK providing list, deque, and vector sequence types; set, map, and hash map associative types; as well as stack, queue, and priority queue adaptor types.

All container implementions, except hash map, are wrappers around an internal C++ STL type. Similar to a vtkCollection, all containers register objects on insertion, unregister them on removal, are wrappable into other languages, and are covered by a unit testing suite. vtkContainers also provides many unique capabilities, higher performance, and support for object level locking.

Though the standard vtkCollection is an excellent general purpose container type that serves the internal needs of VTK very well, specialized containers are often needed for application-level support.

vtkContainers originated as the implementation of a simple stack class for use with parsers or transaction systems and a simple map class for accessing C++ objects by name. The current library grew from the desire to complete the concept by providing all applicable STL container types and their iterators.

ggivnc project is a VNC client using libraries from the GGI project to draw graphics and handle input.

The reason this VNC client came about was to fill the need for a companion to the VNC target in libggi. All existing VNC code was at the time of writing and to the best of my knowledge GPL and originating from the original AT&T code base (either that, or hidden from sight). This VNC client is an implementation from scratch featuring the following encodings:

Raw, CopyRect, RRE, CoRRE, Hextile, Zlib, ZlibHex, ZRLE and LastRect.
