Opera 9.64 / 10.00 Beta Build 4453
Surf the Internet in a safer, faster, and easier way with Opera browser. more>>
Opera 9.64 / 10.00 Beta Build 4453 offers you a powerful and very convenient tool which is an easy way to help you surf the Internet in a safer, faster, and easier way with Opera browser. The most full-featured Internet power tool on the market, Opera includes pop-up blocking, tabbed browsing, integrated searches, E-mail, RSS Newsfeeds and IRC chat. Opera supports all major Linux distributions. RedHat, SuSE, Mandrake, Debian, etc. Intel, PowerPC and Sparc versions.
Major Features:
- Pop-up Blocking:
- No more annoying pop-up advertisements. Opera lets you control whether Web sites can use pop-ups. Select to block them all, or let the browser open only pop-ups that you have requested.
- Integrated Search:
- Search your favorite sites, for example Google, eBay, or Amazon without having to go to their Web pages. Use the integrated search window or shortcuts (e.g. "g" for Google) in the address field.
- Skins:
- Give your browser the look you want with Operas skins. Make the browser your own by giving it the colors, icons, and buttons of your choice.
- E-mail with RSS Newsfeed:
- Operas built-in POP/IMAP E-mail client is a combined e-mail program, news reader, mailing list organizer and RSS newsfeed reader. A safer, faster, and more intelligent way of handling your e-mails, Operas e-mail client is database driven, enabling you to organize and find your e-mails in a matter of seconds through easy searches, labeling, and filtering rather than traditional folder storage.
- Tabbed Browsing:
- Surf the Web easier and faster by opening multiple Web pages within the same application window. Save a collection of pages as a session and open them all with one click every time.
- Advanced Security:
- Protect yourself from ad-ware, spy-ware, viruses, and other third-party malicious software applications that silently attack your computer while you are surfing the Web.
- IRC Chat:
- Communicate with people all over the world using Operas IRC chat client. Use Opera to connect to IRC servers to chat privately or in rooms, or share files and photos with your friends and family.
- Opera is from now 100% FREE and with NO ADS !
Enhancements:

bytecounter 0.8
bytecounter is a simple copying utility with data rate, ETA, and error recovery. more>>
bytecounter is a Perl program to copy data while keeping track of and showing a status line indicating the data-rate and estimated time remaining. Optionally, it retries on errors, for recovering files from bad media.
bytecounter is primary designed to be used "in-between" two programs, to measure rate of data flow. For instance, you might pipe the output of tar to bytecounter, and redirect bytecounter to a tar file, to get data-rate and ETA information on the tar operation.
Some examples of practical usage are listed in the source code comments. It may operate on files, floppy disks, hard disks, terminals, tapes, CD-ROMs, FIFOs, and anything else you could think of to connect to standard input and standard output.
It includes a mode called bccat, which checks the sizes for all named files for use with the ETA feature, and concatenates them together for input.

PJIRC 2.1.1
PJIRC is an IRC client, just like Opera is a HTTP client. more>>
PJIRC is an IRC client, just like Opera is a HTTP client. PJIRC is just another front-end for the well-known IRC network. Youre supposed to be familiar with the IRC concepts. If not, you should try to find more information about it before going further in this document and trying
to install and use PJIRC.
PJIRC has two distinct parts : the IRC engine and the GUI. The IRC engine handles all the boring and uninteresting stuff such as managing the connection, formatting messages and so on. You might think of it as being the "kernel". On the other hand, the GUI is responsible for displaying the result with a nice layout using plenty of CPU-consuming graphical stuff and so on.
PJIRC has several guis and you can choose what you want. You might think of them as "skins", but they are much more than that. The standard PJIRC package comes with a default GUI, the "Pixx GUI". You should find its specific documentation within this package. This document will only describe the IRC engine part.
Main features:
- Highlight support
- ASL handling
- Graphical bitmap used for smileys
- Nickname auto completion
- Nick, channel and URL catcher
- Sound support
- Multilingual support
- Esthetical options such as background image, per-channel color configuration, and so on...
- UTF-8 encoding support
- Support for external control via javascript
- "On connect" command list
- Time stamping
- Fast, light and reliable
- Free and open source

Balayer 0.1
Balayer is yet another web browser. more>>
Only HTML, text and images are rendered. It has the peculiarity to be entirely written in Python, though based on many C-written pieces.
The idea of it came because I like Operas way of browsing, but it is too buggy on Linux, so when I saw someone had written a HTML rendering widget with rather few dependencies, I decided to write my own web browser.
This has led me to write other software pieces that are needed to run balayer for the most part: python-gdkinput, python-cschtml, gladepyc. The latter was independant from Balayer at start, but finally I decided that Balayer would be a good demonstration for it; At the same time, I had to implement features in gladepyc to implement Balayer, so they both benefitted from each other.
Main features:
- Single window navigation: web pages are displayed in a notebook rather than in separate Windows.
- Clicking on a link displays the new page systematically in a new tab, and does not focus it automatically. This is to ease parallel loading of pages.
- Non-blocking loading: you can continue viewing pages while documents and images are loading.
- Bookmark manager: shows and manage separate bookmark trees for each supported bookmark format. No native bookmark format, it uses others. Planned: Opera, Lynx, Netscape.
- Should be quite fast and light (memory and disk footprint); At least it is on my host.

BFilter 1.1
BFilter is a smart filtering HTTP proxy. more>>
BFilter is a filtering web proxy. BFilter was originally intended for removing banner ads only, but at some point it has been extended to remove popups and webbugs. It cant be used as a general purpose filtering proxy because it was never intended this way.
For example you cant just block an arbitary object, you can only hint the ad detector in its decision making.
The main advantage BFilter has over the similar tools is its heuristic ad detection algorithm. The traditional blocklist-based approach is also implemented, but its mostly used for dealing with false positives.
Unlike other tools that require constant updates of their blocklists, BFilter manages to remove over 90% of ads even with an empty blocklist!
The javascript generated ads are not a problem for BFilter, as it has a javascript engine to combat them.
BFilter is expected work with any browser that supports proxies (nearly any browser does), and can forward requests to another HTTP proxy.
BFilter is written in C++ and is distributed under the GNU GPL.
Main features:
- HTTP/0.9 - HTTP/1.1 support.
- Persistent connections (HTTP/1.1 only).
- Pipelining (HTTP/1.1 only).
- HTTP compression.
- Forwarding to another proxy.
- All processing is done on the fly. It doesnt load the whole page or image before processing.
- Heuristic and regex-based approaches to detect ads.
- Detects and removes image, iframe, flash ads, popups and webbugs.
- A javascript engine to combat js-generated ads and popups.
- Heuristic analyzing of images and Flash files.
Enhancements:
- BFilter now caches external scripts it fetches for analyzing.
- Filtering accuracy was improved.
- Added a workaround for "Error decompressing response" problem with Opera and some websites.
- JavaScript engine was updated.
