Openwall GNU/*/Linux 2.0

Openwall GNU/*/Linux is a security-enhanced operating system with Linux and GNU software as its core. more>>
Openwall GNU/*/Linux (or Owl for short) is a security-enhanced operating system with Linux and GNU software as its core, compatible with other major distributions of GNU/*/Linux. Openwall GNU/*/Linux is intended as a server platform. And, of course, it is free.
Main features:
- While we value quality above feature set, Owl does indeed offer a number of features besides just trying to be more secure.
- Most obviously, Owl can be used as a base for installing whatever software is generally available for GNU/*/Linux systems. It offers some compatibility (read below) for software packages found in or developed for other major Linux distributions, such as Red Hat Linux.
- Additionally, being a server platform, Owl will include a growing set of integrated Internet services.
- Owl includes a complete build environment capable to re-build the entire system from source with one simple command ("make buildworld"). (This is explained in more detail below.)
- Owl supports multiple architectures (currently x86, SPARC, and Alpha), as this lets you use it in more cases and helps us catch certain classes of software bugs earlier, thus improving the reliability of Owl packages.
Security:
- Owl combines several approaches to reduce the number and/or impact of flaws in its software components and impact of flaws in third-party software that one might install on the system.
- The primary approach used is proactive source code review for several classes of software vulnerabilities. However, because of the large amount of code, theres a certain level of "importance" for a software component or a part thereof to be audited. - Currently, only pieces of code which are typically run with privileges greater than those of a regular user and/or typically process data obtained over a network are audited before the corresponding software component is included. This covers relevant code paths in many of the system libraries, all SUID/ SGID programs, all daemons and network services. Other software may be audited when it is already a part of Owl. Potential problems found during the audit are fixed or, in some pathological cases, may prevent the software component from being included. In general, code quality and privilege management are always considered when theres a choice between implementations of a feature. As the project evolves, many of the software components will be replaced with ones of our own.
- When packaged for Owl, the software components are configured or, when necessary, modified in order to provide safe defaults, apply the least privilege principle, and introduce privilege separation. The use of safe defaults, where optional and potentially dangerous features need to be turned on explicitly, lets us audit the pieces of code used in in the default configuration in a more thorough way. Extra systems administration facilities ("owl-control") are provided for managing system features such as the optional SUID/SGID binaries independently from installing the corresponding packages. Every Owl package will have its audit status documented to allow for risk assessment.
- While source code review is the preferred way to deal with software vulnerabilities, it cant be applied in all cases. Typically, when insecure third-party software is installed on an otherwise secure system, "the game" is lost. The only thing an operating system can guarantee is that potential unauthorized access would be limited to those privileges granted to the software in question. However, in the recent years, a number of approaches were developed which reduce the likelihood and/or may reduce the impact of successful real-world attacks on insecure third-party software. Owl will use some of those "hardening" approaches in various parts of the system.
- Owl uses "strong" cryptography within its core components, and already includes some security policy enforcement (proactive password checking with "pam_passwdqc", password and account expiration, network address- based access control) and integrity checking ("mtree") capabilities. It is one of our goals to provide a wide range of security tools with Owl, available for use "out of the box".
Enhancements:
- After many Owl-current snapshots, Owl 2.0 release is finally out.
- Owl 2.0 is built around Linux kernel 2.4.32-ow1, glibc 2.3.6 (with our security enhancements), GCC 3.4.5, and recent versions of over 100 other packages.
- It offers binary- and package-level compatibility for most packages intended for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 (RHEL4) and Fedora Core 3 (FC3), as well as for many FC4 packages.
- Additionally, Owl 2.0 uses our new installer, making installation a lot easier than it used to be for Owl 1.1 and below.

easys GNU/Linux 3.0

easys GNU/Linux 3.0

easys GNU/Linux 2.1 is a Slackware-based distribution with KDE Light and formerly known as more>>
easys GNU/Linux was formerly known as "pocketlinux".
easys GNU/Linux main aims are to be small, fast and easy to use. If you think your live isnt slacked, yet, give this one a try.
easys GNU/Linux is a Slackware-based distribution developed by former developers of the now-discontinued Bonzai Linux.
easys GNU/Linux has a different approach then most other distributions. We want to build up a version of linux you can count on, and you can do your daily work with.
In the past 10 years in computer business I have noticed that most users only need a few applications (f.e. a texteditor, a spreadsheet, a browser or an email client). Current Desktop Environemnts like KDE offer a lot more. But can you tell me WHO really needs 3 different texteditors? So we slimmed it all down a bit. And thats what pocketlinux is about. We do not offer any administration frontends for deep system tweeks, as we think a "normal" user should not touch these things. Experienced Users can use the on board administration tools that come with the Slackware core. (Of course, if you really want to change any hardware specific settings like your monitor resolution, feel free to ask someone in the forum).
We only offer 1 application per task, so there is only one texteditor visible for the end user. (Please note that the kde-light environment is based on a complete KDE version, so most of the KDE application are onboard, too. But they are not visible to the end user per default.)
So we took a look at other installers and noticed the "shell script" based Slackware installer. The only thing we do not like about it is that its not i18n-able. So we took some time to customize the installer to be able to write back a complete tar archive on nearly any harddrive. We added i18n support (English and German right now. We are still looking for translators) and modified the kernel installation.
Enhancements:
- We are proud to present the next generation of the easys GNU/Linux operating system. The OS is now based on Slackware Linux 11.0 which comes with full kernel 2.6 support, including udev for device initialization. Kernel 2.6.17.13 is the default for a fresh installation. Besides current versions of glibc (2.3.6), GCC (3.4.6) and X.Org 6.9.0, we have included a full version of KDE 3.5.4 instead of KDE light. It has been optimized for easier usage including one application per task and a fresh enterprise GUI design called waveline. Kiosktool and KDE Kiosk Mode can be used to create user and group policies which allows you to easily setup internet kiosks or locked down workstations.

Debian GNU/Linux 4.0r1

Debian GNU/Linux 4.0r1

Debian Operating System is an association of individuals who have made common cause to create a free operating system. more>>
Debian Operating System is an association of individuals who have made common cause to create a free operating system. This operating system is called Debian GNU/Linux, or simply Debian for short. Debian systems currently use the Linux kernel.
Linux is a completely free piece of software started by Linus Torvalds and supported by thousands of programmers worldwide. Of course, the thing that people want is application software: programs to help them get what they want to do done, from editing documents to running a business to playing games to writing more software.
Debian comes with over 8000 packages (precompiled software that is bundled up in a nice format for easy installation on your machine) - all of it free. Its a bit like a tower. At the base is the kernel. On top of that are all the basic tools.
Next is all the software that you run on the computer. At the top of the tower is Debian -- carefully organizing and fitting everything so it all works together.
Among versions of Linux, Debian is fairly unique, unlike most distributions it isnt backed by any for profit venture and instead is an all volunteer organization. There is no for profit company, or business plan behind Debian, it is a wide ranging project along the lines of GNU. Debian also provides the basis for a number of other Linux distributions, such as Lindows, Xandros, Libranet, and Knoppix.
The linchpin of Debian is a combination package management system and distribution network called forth by the mighty apt-get command. What makes this network so exceptional is that the dpkg-deb files which make up Debian packages contain information on their underlying dependencies so installing a package from the Debian network will call up all of its dependent packages.
As an example, installing a KDE application would make sure that KDE, X windows, and everything underneath was already installed on the system, and if the prerequisite packages werent already installed than the packages would automatically be downloaded and installed from the Debian network.
Enhancements:
- The Debian project has updated the stable distribution Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 (code name Etch). This update adds security updates to the stable release, together with a few corrections to serious problems. As always, the first point release also corrects a few issues that have been noticed too late in the release process to stop the release, but still should be fixed. This point release for Etch also includes an updated release of the installer, which includes the following changes: kernels used in the installer have been updated to ABI 2.6.18-5; updated mirror list; support added for certain USB CD drives that were not being detected; incorrect setup of GKSu fixed when user chooses to install with the root account disabled...

X/OS Linux 4.0

X/OS Linux 4.0

X/OS Linux is a GNU/Linux distribution for business and enterprise users. more>>
X/OS Linux is derived from the Free/Open Source rpm packages of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 (RHEL4) under the requirements set forth by their trademark policy.

X/OS has spent considerable effort to avoid using Red Hats trademarks in any way that would imply an association with or sponsorship by Red Hat.

After some delay, the final release of X/OS Linux 4.0 is now available to the public.

The X/OS Linux team has spent considerable effort to assure the label enterprise-grade Linux for this milestone release. With the simultaneous availability of X/OS Linux 4.0 for x86 and x86_64 processor architectures, it delivers the latest “best-of-breed” Free and Open Source software for both 32- and 64-bit platforms.

Highlights include the 2.6 Linux kernel featuring numerous enhancements over the previous 2.4 version, Security Enhanced Linux (SELinux) to apply more granular security policies, improved storage capabilities supporting file systems of up to 8TB and more.

The Global File System (GFS) and Cluster Suite software is included in this release to ease the task of creating and managing advanced cluster configurations, and is available as an extra option during installation. This powerful set of tools provides seamless scalability of applications such as databases, web servers and high-performance computing clusters — with GFS enabling nodes to simultaneously read and write to a single shared filesystem.

Next to providing an advanced server platform, X/OS Linux 4.0 adds various enhancements to the desktop — increasing usability with greatly improved office productivity tools, plug-and-play USB device recognition and power management supporting the ACPI standard.

In addition to compatibility with the de facto distribution for deploying Linux in the enterprise, X/OS Linux strides to include various other useful packages and tools that conform to the standard for mature and robust “enterprise-grade” software. One example is Xfce, an extra option in addition to Gnome and KDE, offering a light-weight desktop environment suited for use on low-end or thin client systems.
