Openbox 3.4.4

Openbox 3.4.4

Openbox is a standards compliant, fast, light-weight, extensible window manager. more>>
Openbox project is a standards compliant, fast, light-weight, extensible window manager.
Openbox works with your applications, and makes your desktop easier to manage. This is because the approach to its development was the opposite of what seems to be the general case for window managers. Openbox was written first to comply with standards and to work properly. Only when that was in place did the team turn to the visual interface.
Openbox is fully functional as a stand-alone working environment, or can be used as a drop-in replacement for the default window manager in the GNOME or KDE desktop environments.
Openbox 3 is a completely new breed of window manager. It is not based upon any existing code base, although the visual appearance has been based upon that of Blackbox. Openbox 2 was based on the Blackbox 0.65.0 codebase.
Openbox is free software, and is distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License
Main features:
- ICCCM and EWMH compliance!
- Fast as f$%k!
- Chainable key bindings!
- Customizable mouse actions!
- Window resistance!
- Multi-head Xinerama support!
- Pipe menus!

Docker 1.5

Docker 1.5

Docker is a docking application (WindowMaker dock app) which acts as a system tray for KDE and GNOME2. more>>
Docker is a docking application (WindowMaker dock app) which acts as a system tray for KDE and GNOME2. Docker can be used to replace the panel in either environment, allowing you to have a system tray w ithout running the KDE/GNOME panel or environment.

I wrote and designed Docker to work with Openbox 2, but it should work fine in any window manager that supports WindowMaker dock apps.

If you running WindowMaker or otherwise and experiencing problems, you should try using the -wmaker option to make docker keep a fixed size.

Docker requires a KDE3 compliant window manager to handle KDE3 system tray icons, and since it is a docking application, the window manager needs to also support WindowMaker Dock Apps. The only window manager that meets these requirements to my knowledge is:

- Openbox 2 (http://icculus.org/openbox)

If you know of any other window managers that support the KDE3 hints for the system tray and docking apps (i.e. that docker works in), please let me know so I can add them to this list, and test docker out in them!

Why dont my GNOME2 system tray icons show up?

I dont know! Email me and let me know what application isnt working. (Dont you dare email me about a GNOME1 application!

BPager is a lightweight pager designed to be used with NetWM-compliant window managers like OpenBox. more>>
BPager is a lightweight pager designed to be used with NetWM-compliant window managers like OpenBox.

Unlike many other pagers out there, OBPager has very few dependencies, requiring only Xlib and glibc++ (no Gnome or KDE necessary).

Usage:

OBPager is pretty straightforward in terms of usage. It correctly displays the windows of a virtual desktop, indicates which is the active desktop, and allows you to switch desktops by clicking on the dockapp.

The command line syntax for obpager is:

obpager [--activefont < fontname >] [--inactivefont < fontname >] [desktop-number]

If no desktop number is specified, an instance of obpager for each virtual desktop is automatically created.

Grafpup 2.00

Grafpup 2.00

Grafpup Linux is a desktop Linux operating system based closely on Puppy Linux. more>>
Grafpup Linux is a desktop Linux operating system based closely on Puppy Linux. Grafpups goal is to be as useful to graphic designers and other imaging professionals as possible while still remaining extremely small and fast. How small?
Grafpup is a live cd of only 72mb with current versions of Gimp, Cinepaint, Inkscape, and Scribus. You will be amazed at how much is in there for the size. You will also be amazed at how fast everything runs.
Running from the live cd, the entire operating system loads into ram, including all of the applications. This means that your programs start without any hesitation and respond instantly to your input. Unlike some live cds, however, you dont have to reconfigure every time you reboot.
Grafpup saves all of your settings into a file called pup101 on your hard drive. This file contains your entire home directory, plus any additional programs that you wish to install. Grafpup is also very user friendly, with wizards for doing most system tasks like connecting to the internet and installing to hard disk or usb drive.
There is also a powerful package management system, pupget, with a very extensive and ever increasing list of additional packages available for easy installation. An additional package installer, dotpup, offers single click installation of a long list of software. In other words this is much more than a garden variety live cd. It is capable of being your main operating system and extensible enough to satisfy just about anyone.
How is all of this accomplished? I wish I could take all of the credit but I really have to take my hat off to the developer of Puppy Linux, Barry Kauler. Puppy (and Grafpup) uses the squash filesystem method of compression to reduce the size of the cd image by about two thirds. Then, through the magic of unionfs the whole filesystem becomes writeable again.
For a full explanation please go to the Puppylinux website, www.puppylinux.org. Another aspect of the incredible size to utility ratio is the careful selection of applications that goes into Puppy and has made its way into Grafpup. Applications are chosen for speed and simplicity, avoiding bulky and wasteful code. Grafpup uses icewm as its default (and only) window manager.
KDE or Gnome arent even considered. Opera is used as the default browser and email client, instead of the common combination of Firefox and Thunderbird which would be half again as large. Though small, you will find that ROX-filer is one of the best filemanagers that you will ever use. It just plain works. I have further cut down in certain other areas in order to leave room for some serious heavy duty graphics applications.
Even though things are cut down, you will find that Grafpup is a fairly complete operating system and most tasks can be completed without the need for additional software. You will be able to browse the web, send and recieve email, write and print documents, organize your digital photos, and watch dvd movies and video off the internet.
You will also be able to burn cds and dvds, create impressive graphics and animations, put together professional looking web pages, and create press-ready brochures or other materials for print. And Im talking about the live cd without any additional software.
Visit the Grafpup and Puppy package repositories and you can unlock as much potential as any of the most popular Linux distros out there. There you will find such powerful software as OpenOffice and the Seamonkey internet suite. You can create 3d graphics using Blender, or even install and run a large selection of Windows software using Wine.
Try it and see for yourself. Since it is a live cd there is very little, if any, risk involved. I believe you will be pleasantly surprised at what can be done using such a tiny system.
Enhancements:
- Grafpup 2.00 (final) is officially on the mirrors. This release comes with some really bleeding edge features when compared with previous versions, such as a 2.6.20.2 kernel, revamped package management with dependency resolution, GIMP 2.3.14, Cinepaint 0.22 with the Ufraw plug-in, a brand new control panel, cdrkit replacing cdrtools, Openbox replacing IceWM, and a host of other changes. In addition to the light-weight Openbox desktop, you can also easily download and install both Xfce and KDE. The software repository has blown up to include over 1,100 titles (and counting).

WMAlbum 0.1.5

WMAlbum 0.1.5

WMAlbum is a dock applet that displays album covers for songs being played by XMMS. more>>
WMAlbum is a dock applet that displays album covers for songs being played by XMMS. You must already have images of the album covers stored near the file being played.

WMAlbum provides a handy circular menu for play/skip/etc, and can replace wmxmms. Although dock applets are designed for the WindowMaker window manager, they also work in other window managers including openbox and blackbox.

WMAlbum is underdocumented but very simple. Place .jpg images of your album covers next to the mp3 files, and wmalbum will take care of displaying them whenever xmms switches songs. You can control xmms using the circular menu or use your mouse-wheel to control volume. Double-click to see the album cover image full-size. Linger, and a tooltip will appear with the artist and song title.

WMAlbum does not include any album cover images. It does not include any scripts for automatically fetching them. It does not use id3 tags, so it does not bloat your mp3s.

WMAlbum requires gdk-pixbuf and xmms to build. gimp-perl is necessary to rebuild the graphic circular menu, but not necessary for an ordinary build. Instructions for debian users are in the readme.

Kahakai is a fork of the Waimea window manager, with the intent to create a language agnostic scriptable window manager. more>>
Kahakai is a fork of the Waimea window manager, with the intent to create a language agnostic scriptable window manager, while maintaining the original features of Waimea, and extending upon them. Kahakai is pronounced with the ca in car, the ha in hard, and ki from kite.
By "language agnostic", we mean that the scripts which control actions in the window manager are not language specific, they can be written in any language supported by SWIG. For starters, we plan on supporting Python with the addition of Ruby and Perl shortly thereafter.
Main features:
- Window/edge snapping
- Transparent window titles and menus with anti-aliased fonts
- Python scripting (Ruby/Perl support planned) used for configuration
- Dockapp support
- Pixmap styles, compatible with Blackbox/Fluxbox/Openbox & Waimea styles
- Viewports, multiple desktops
