Paderborn University BSP Library is a C-Library to support development of parallel algorithm based on the "Bulk-Synchronous-Parallel-Model".
The Library offers buffered asynchronous message-passing between the nodes, organized in supersteps. At the begin of a superstep the nodes receive all messages which has been sent in the previous superstep.
The PUB-Library supports in addition to send node-to-node messages other functions like broadcasts and parallel prefix operations with a set of nodes.
PUB offers functions for both message passing and remote memory access. Furthermore, some collective communication operations like broadcast and parallel prefix are also provided.
To become more flexible, PUB allows creating independent BSP objects each representing a virtual BSP computer. Goudreau et al.[GHL$^+$96] defined an interface for BSP libraries call ``BSP Worldwide Standard which is implemented in the Oxford BSP toolset[HDM97]. You can also use the BSP Worldwide Standard for programming with PUB (refer to Section 1.6).
A performance comparison with other communication libraries and some implementation details can be found in [BJOR99].
The PUB-Library is available for several parallel platforms. The generated library is specified by four configuration variables PUB_MACHINE (machine type), PUB_SYSTEM (operating system), PUB_COMMUNICATION (communication library) and PUB_MODE (e.g. debug).

OpenTaxSolver (OTS) project is a free program for calculating Tax Form entries and tax-owed or refund-due, such as Federal or State personal income taxes.
An optional graphical front-end, OTS_GUI, has been added. Currently, TaxSolver has been updated for the 2005 tax-year for the following forms: US 1040 and Schedules A, B, C, & D.
As well as for California, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania State Taxes for 2005 tax-year, thanks to contributors. Updates for the following additional states are expected to be posted soon: North Carolina, New York, Ohio, and Virginia. Preliminary versions for Canada and the United Kingdom were posted in previous years and may be updated with help from volunteers.
Motivations:
- To make tax preparation software available for all platforms.
- To provide insight into how our taxes are calculated in clear unambiguous equations/code.
- To avoid invasive, bloated commercial software packages.
- To avoid rewriting our own individual programs each year by combining efforts.
- To provide a simple reliable tax-package requiring only rudimentary knowledge to maintain.
Enhancements:
- Automatic phone credit was added to US1040.
- It will automatically calculate standard one-time phone credit, if not otherwise specified on US1040 line 71.
- The NJ State form F line 5 was fixed.

Weve added security updates, made modifications to make software work better with the way things are set up here, and added some applications that we think you might like to have.

The server edition of BU Linux provides a modern, stable, and robust server platform suitable for long-term deployment in many roles throughout the university.

Supported Hardware

Currently, only i686-class machines are supported. This includes almost everything from Intels Pentium Pro on. AMD64 and Intel EM64T systems will work fine using their 32-bit mode. Watch for a 64-bit version later this summer.

Specific Notes on Server Applications

Mail Server:

BU Linux 4.5 Server Edition (Zodiac) includes three different choices of Mail Transfer Agent (MTA) for your mail server. Each of these open source servers has its unique strengths, and you can install one or more and use the utility system-switch-mail to choose which is active.

The default is IBMs Postfix, which is designed from scratch to be secure and easily configurable. On a newly-installed BU Linux machine, Postfix is configured to exchange mail on the local machine and to send mail out to other systems, but not receive mail from the network. For this reason, outgoing mail from global BU accounts (those matching valid BU login names and with the proper UID) will appear to come from @bu.edu rather than @hostname.bu.edu. Local users (including system accounts) will retain the hostname, but without reconfiguration, any replies will bounce. Changing the system to accept mail is easy; see the BU Linux web site for details.

For the maximum flexibility and for compatibility with existing configurations (and with existing expertise), we also include the traditional standard Sendmail. And, if you have particular special needs, you may find that the new Exim MTA fits your situation best.

No matter which MTA you choose, please contact us if you need any assistance. With so many options available, the situation can be confusing, and its unfortunately easy for an accidentally misconfigured system to become a target for spam relayers. We have significant expertise at configuring both Postfix and Sendmail in a variety of situations, and will be glad to help.

FTP Server:

This release of BU Linux provides two options for FTP. The first is vsftpd, which is designed to be simple and secure. This is the most appropriate for almost all situations, but if you require more power and flexibility, we also include ProFTPd, which has many more options and a configuration syntax similar to that of the Apache web server.

Please also remember that FTP is an insecure protocol and that any passwords used travel over the network in plain text. For this reason, its best to avoid anything but anonymous FTP. For user-authenticated file transfer, use SSH and SFTP. (SFTP is provided by the OpenSSH server and enabled by default.)

Web Server:

The web server software included in BU Linux is the industry-standard Apache httpd. We also include PHP 4.3 and many other useful tools for building a web server.
If you need to provide authenticated access to web services to BU users, please contact us and we will provide you with our University-standard Weblogin module. This provides a powerful and flexible means of single-signon access control for the BU user community and we want to make it as easy as possible for you to provide this for your users.

Database Server:

BU Linux includes MySQL 4.1 and PostgreSQL 7.4. For less demanding SQL applications, we also provide SQLite 3, which provides simple SQL databases without the management overhead of running a SQL server.

Concurrent Hierarchical State Machine (CHSM) is a language system for specifying concurrent, hierarchical, finite state machines (an implementation of "statecharts") to model and control reactive systems.
CHSM uses its own statechart specification langauge annotated with either C++ or Java code fragments in the tradition of yacc grammars with C code fragments. The generated code is fully object oriented allowing multiple state machines to exist concurrently. The CHSM run-time library is small, efficient, and thread-safe.
CHSM has been used successfullly in production environments such as CERN, Philips, and Qualcomm. There is an independent review from users at CERN.
Enhancements:
- The "dominance" rule has been extended from parent/child transitions to sibling transitions.
- This allows "if-else" transitions to be done more efficiently.

Having worked with IP Filter on Solaris for a few years now, when I work on IP Tables in Linux I come to miss State Top. So I decided to write a version for IP Tables. IPTState is a state top along with a "single run" mode to quickly display states once. IP Tables State has customizable sorting (including reverse), customizable refresh rates, etc. etc. See the README, the man page and the -h option for details.

IPTState is now in the Debian, Redhat, Fedora Core, Mandrake, Gentoo, FloppyFW, and Devil Linux distributions as well as the pkgsrc project.

This module lets you map states and provinces to their codes, and codes to names of provinces and states.

The Geography::States - new ()> call takes 1 or 2 arguments. The first, required, argument is the country we are interested in. Current supported countries are USA, Brazil, Canada, The Netherlands, and Australia. If a second non-false argument is given, we use strict mode. In non-strict mode, we will map territories and alternative codes as well, while we do not do that in strict mode. For example, if the country is USA, in non-strict mode, we will map GU to Guam, while in strict mode, neither GU and Guam will be found.

The state() method

All queries are done by calling the state method in the object. This method takes an optional argument. If an argument is given, then in scalar context, it will return the name of the state if a code of a state is given, and the code of a state, if the argument of the method is a name of a state. In list context, both the code and the state will be returned.

If no argument is given, then the state method in list context will return a list of all code/name pairs for that country. In scalar context, it will return the number of code/name pairs. Each code/name pair is a 2 element anonymous array.

Arguments can be given in a case insensitive way; if a name consists of multiple parts, the number of spaces does not matter, as long as there is some whitespace. (That is "NewYork" is wrong, but "new YORK" is fine.)

Autostatus is a network and server monitoring program. The project is designed to support large, arbitrarily complex networks of computers, and still provide feedback in a very timely fashion. To that extent, it has the following goals:
- Speed - Autostatus attempts to probe for network status as quickly as possible.
- Efficiency - Autostatus will not attempt to check for status on portions of the network it already knows are down, eliminating redundant checks.
- Accuracy - Autostatus presents as accurate a picture of the network status as it can from its perspective.
Autostatus has some features which make it fairly unique among network monitoring programs:
Dependency Resolution
Autostatus can be given information about the path it takes to reach network segments, or other dependencies in network or server topology. Given this dependency information, autostatus will then query for status in the proper order in order to guarantee that:
- Nothing is queried before all of the items upon which it depends have already been queried.
- Nothing is queried if an item upon which it depends is down.
- Items are not incorrectly marked as down when they are simply unreachable due to a dependency failure.
This dependency resolution is, of course, fully recursive. The software will also warn about abnormal conditions in the configuration file such as cyclical dependencies.
Parallel status gathering
Autostatus uses the excellent fping program written by Roland J. Schemers III at Stanford University. (see the fping copyright below). By intelligently grouping services together for parallel testing, Autostatus minimizes the amount of time necessary to scan large numbers of networks or servers.
For testing TCP services, Autostatus uses a component called tcpcheck to perform parallel checks of TCP connections. tcpcheck was developed specifically for Autostatus, but has considerable utility outside of Autostatus.
Status Web Page
Autostatus automatically generates a status web page which reflects the current-known network and server status on a per-item basis.
Email notification
Autostatus sends email when the state of a monitored item changes (based upon configurable thresholds). Using an email to pager program (such as hellpage, by the author, or various other paging programs), it is very easy to route notifications for each service to the correct party.
Multiple service monitoring
Autostatus can monitor both routers/hosts via ICMP messages, and specific services on machines via TCP connections. In keeping with the themes of autostatus, TCP connections may be avoided if the machine is not reachable via ICMP, or may be tried at all times.

Ragel State Machine Compiler compiles finite state machines from regular languages into executable C/C++/Objective-C code. Ragel state machines can not only recognize byte sequences as regular expression machines do, but can also execute code at arbitrary points in the recognition of a regular language.
Ragel can also be thought of as a finite state transducer compiler where output symbols represent blocks of code that get executed instead of written to the output stream.
When you wish to write down a regular language you start with some simple regular language and build a bigger one using the regular language operators union, concatenation, kleene star, intersection and subtraction.
This is precisely the way you describe to Ragel how to compile your finite state machines. Ragel also understands operators that embed actions into machines and operators that control any non-determinism in machines.
Ragel FSMs are closed under all of Ragels regular language, action specification and priority assignment operators. This property allows arbitrary regular languages to be described. Complexity is limited only by available processing resources.
For example, you can make one machine that picks out specially formatted comments in C code, another machine that builds a list all function declarations and a third that identifies string constants then "or" them all together to make a single machine that performs all of these tasks concurrently and independently on one pass of the input.

- Hopcrofts state minimization.
- Embed any number of actions into machines at arbitrary places.

NSCL Data Acquisition System can be combined with NSCL SpecTcl to form a powerful online/offline data handling system. It is in use at several university labs and, of course, the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at Michigan State University.

- The way the experimental files work has been reorganized.
- Issues in controplush have been fixed.
- More hardware support has been added (preliminary VM-USB support).
Whats New in 8.0-01 Stable Release:
- Make event files readonly as they get finalized.
- Make ~stagearea/complete write protected except when it has to be.
- Fix up 2.6 build so that lib and include get installed... and can be cleaned.
- Fix a bunch of stuff with the 2.6 build that arises on make dist and building from the tarball. (mostly copying stuff from the 8.1 build files.
- Make sure the right compilers link the readout skels.
- Adjust the framework makefile so that template class implementations will get installed in the include directory to allow them to be used in application software.
- Ensure the SBS driver is identical to the 2.6 version of the drive in the 8.1 branch.

Chemistry Development Kit classes are Java utitility classes for ChemoInformatics and Computational chemistry, written in Java. They are developed constantly developed parallel to other projects that make use of them.
They are a complete re-write of the CompChem classes that were the basis of JChemPaint, a Java Editor for 2D chemical structures, and of JMDraw, a Java package for the graphical layout of 2D chemical structures.
The CDK project was started in September 2000 to replace the CompChem libraries used by JChemPaint, Jmol and SENECA. It no longer is in its initial stage, but is slowly getting a solid state.
The people involved in setting up the project are Christoph Steinbeck then at the Chemoinformatics Group at the Max Planck Institute of Chemical Ecology in Jena, as well as Egon Willighagen from the University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands, who is also involved with JChemPaint and many other Java Chemoinformatics programs, and Dan Gezelter from Notre Dame University, South Bend, USA, the initiator of Jmol, a 3D viewer and analyzer for molecules .
Now, the rewrite of these CompChem/CDK library classes do somehow effect all of our projects. All of our code relies to some extend on the so-called CompChem classes for computational chemistry.
Christoph Steinbeck started this chemistry library when he started programming SENECA, a system for Computer Assisted Structure Elucidation. It turned out that some of the code had design flaws that prevented others, like the authors of (Jmol) to use it.
Enhancements:
- This release consists of mostly some bugfixes, but also solves a few Java 1.4.2 compile problems and adds more functionality to the SMARTS parser.
