J-Nix
J-Nix provides everything the home user needs, and as little else as possible. more>>
J-Nix provides everything the home user needs, and as little else as possible. This makes J-Nix more secure, faster to run, faster to install.
The things the home user needs are
* browser,
* email,
* chat,
* word processor,
* spreadsheet program,
* presentation program.
Mozilla and Open Office do these well, better than Microsoft does and with incredibly fewer vulnerabilituies to hackers, worms and viruses.,
We took a lot of material only of interest to programmers OUT.
Then we made it as easy as possible to use the first time. Insert the CD and one boots to a pleasant screen ready to browse, email, instant message or look at news. We used through Mozilla (FireFox) for most of the web and Gaim for instant messaging.
We took out compilers, seven different text editors, web servers, email servers, several emulators, and localization except for US English.
We took out almost 200 M bytes from the CD, and a Gig from the hard drive space used.
We left in the system tools for getting packages, apt and kpackage so a web savvy user can add in any package they need.
Easier to start with. Easy to add what you need. What could be better?

FindIt NIX 1.0.2
FindIt NIX project is a clone of a great find-the-difference game. more>>
FindIt NIX project is a clone of a great find-the-difference game.
FindItNIX is a clone of the Windows game FindItXP. The goal is to spot the 5 differences between 2 images within a certain amount of time. The quicker you find them, the higher the bonus will be.
FindItNIX features high scores compatible with those of the Windows version and over 1200 levels available on the Internet.
Enhancements:
- Implemented hack in Makefile so the program links to the libqt-2.x.x.so in stead of the 3.x libraries which cause an unknown problem. Until I fixed this, and qt-2.x.x is
- still on your system you wont have any problems compiling nymore.
- Some minor documentation updates.

Video Contact Sheet *NIX 1.0.9a
Video Contact Sheet *NIX is a script that creates a contact sheet (preview) from videos by taking still captures of the video. more>>
Video Contact Sheet *NIX or vcs for short, is a script that creates a contact sheet (preview) from videos by taking still captures distributed over the length of the video.
The output image contains useful information on the video such as codecs, file size, screen size, frame rate, and length.
Notes:
Using -i or -n with values that lead to the same number of vidcaps doesnt necessarily yield exactly the same vidcaps, youll have to play with them for best results.
Example: With a video that lasts for 22min 14secs, -n 6 will create the six vidcaps:
3:22, 6:44, 10:04, 13:28, 16:50 and 20:12, while -i 3m will create
3:00, 6:00, 9:00, 12:00, 15:00 and 18:00.
As you can see, -n distributes the vidcaps all over the video while -i N starts at N and goes in increments of it up to the end.
You can set the aspect ratio of the video with -a. It is only required for anamorphic material and discouraged for the rest.
It can take either a floating point number (like 1.33 or 1.778) or a fraction (like 4/3 or 16/9). The latter is slightly preferable.

LANdialler 0.2
LANdialler is a project which controls your routers dial up links from any computer (modem sharing). more>>
LANdialler is a project which controls your routers dial up links from any computer (modem sharing).
LANdialler allows any computer (Windows, Linux, etc.) on a small LAN to control and share a modem attached to a *nix server.
It is typically used with IP masquerading or NAT on a Linux router to provide a house or small office with shared, on-demand, Internet access.
If you have a small home or office network (a LAN) that connects to the Internet via a dial up link on a Linux computer, then LANdialler could be of real use to you. If you havent got a Linux router yet find out how to set one up. The LANdialler client software should run on most operating systems, including Windows and Linux.
LANdialler consists of two programs:
The client is run on all desktop computers that require Internet access. It talks to the server, requesting Internet connectivity for as long as the user requires it. The interface is very simple, which is officially a "good thing".
The server runs on the router and manages the state of the dial up connection. It keeps track of the number of people who have asked to go online and keeps the Internet connection up until the last user disconnects.

Rubix Linux 1.0
Rubix is a Linux distribution forked from Slackware Linux. more>>
Rubix is a Linux distribution forked from Slackware Linux.
It differs from its parent in that Rubix uses Arch Linuxs pacman for simplified package management with dependency resolution and it has a completely revamped init system, maintaining the BSD style, but adding modularity.
What is Rubix?
- It is a new Linux distribution that is something of a fork of Slackware 10.1.
- It will branch off in its own direction very quickly, in many ways, it already has.
- It maintains the Slackware traditions of Simplicity, Security and Stability.
- It will run on all i486 hardware and newer and is optimized for i686.
- It is designed to support mission critical hardware and be very admin friendly.
- It is a great distribution for knowledgable *NIX users!
- If you know Slackware, you will do great in Rubix!
How is Rubix different from Slackware?
- Rubix uses Arch Linuxs pacman for simplified package management with dependency resolution.
- Rubix has completely revamped the init system, maintaining the BSD style, but adding modularity.
- Rubix uses gcc 3.4.1 and compiles most packages with SSP (aka: ProPolice), and PIE (Position Independant Executable) wherever possible, but will never patch software just to make it compile with SSP andor PIE. This means that Rubix should not be thought of as a hardened distribution as many packages can not be compiled with SSP, however, it does mean that Rubix is harder than most. This logic makes most software more secure and does not require downstream patching for compatability, a major goal of Rubix.
Enhancements:
- This is the inaugural release of the Rubix Linux operating system. Rubix Linux is distributed with the Linux kernel versions 2.6.15.5, 2.4.32 and 2.4.32-grsec. Rubix Linux is well equipped to serve in both desktop and server roles. Rubix has exceptional hardware detection with udev replacing hotplug for 2.6 kernels and the latest KDE desktop version 3.5.1. Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.1 and Thunderbird 1.5 are now the default web browser and email client. Rubix Linux also supports the best modern filesystems including ext2, ext3, JFS, XFS, ReiserFS and now Reiser4 (with 2.6 kernels) from installation.
