A screenshot, screen capture, or screen dump is an image taken by the computer to record the visible items on the monitor or another visual output device. Usually this is a digital image taken by the host operating system or software running on the computer device, but it can also be a capture made by a camera or a device intercepting the video output of the computer.

Screenshots, screen dumps, or screen captures can be used to demonstrate a program, a particular problem a user might be having or generally when computer output needs to be shown to others or archived.

Unicap provides a uniform API for all kinds of video capture devices. Unicap was designed keeping simplicity in mind so that developers can focus on their actual image processing tasks when using video capture devices.
Device drivers are accessed via a plugin mechanism. Support for new devices can be added on the fly, without recompilation of the library. The API remains the same for each device so that an application using unicap immediately works with all devices supported by unicap.
In the near future, transparent network support will be available allowing applications to use devices connected to a remote computer just as if they were local.

jNetStream is a protocol analyzer and a sniffer. A set of applications and complete Java library are provided with a comprehensive API.
Hundreds of protocols have been defined, and the list can be expanded with a simple NPL language. It is appropriate for custom protocol development, grad students, and network teachers/professors.
Supplied applications provide all of the common functionality you may expect from a packet sniffer:

Note: /opt/jnetstream directory is the default installation directory, if you install JNetStream into a different directory adjust the base dir name appropriately.
Enhancements:
- This release introduces a number of new features and bugfixes.
- NPL protocol definitions are now only loaded on demand and allow user-definable binding overrides.
- New packet counting options have been added which run under several different models, including a statistical model.
- Packets can be counted in very large, multi-gig files quickly.
- Lots of logging (Apache CommonsLogging and Log4j) has been added.

When an image is taken from a video capture source (f.i. a freeze-frame), sometimes only either the odd or the even fields in the frame get captured, resulting in an image which, line by line, is data-black-data-black-etc.

De-interlace plug-in does a simple interpolation between the odd or even fields in an image to correct this.

Xvidcap is a tool that can capture movement on an X11 display. The project works in two distinct modes: It can capture to single frames (like a number of jpeg images) or it can encode the captured frames to a video on-line.
It is intended to be a standards-based alternative to tools like Lotus ScreenCam for UNIX platforms. On-line encoding is done through FFMPEG and also allows for audio grabbing on OSS compatible systems.

gsnapshot is a GTK2 application. The project provides for capturing a screen snapshot of the entire screen, a window or a region, with a simple user interface.

gsnapshot only depends on GTK version 2.8.x (developed and tested with gtk-2.8.16) thus, only X Windows is needed to capture the screen, a window or a region.

Localized with many translations taken from BabelFish many may be awful: German, Spanish, French, Bahasa Indonesia, Italian, Japanese [Default: English]

Screen capture can be saved to a file as PNG, JPEG or BMP format.

Screen capture can be printed to a PostScript file or piped to /usr/bin/lp.

libpcap is a handy little library which provides a packet filtering mechanism based on the BSD packet filter (BPF).
Enhancements:
- Basic BPF filtering, Bluetooth, USB capturing on Linux, FreeBSD BIOCSDIRECTION ioctl, additional filter operations for 802.11 frame types, and support for filtering on MTP2 frame types were all added, and numerous other minor enhancements and bugfixes were made.
