NewsFeed 2.8

NewsFeed 2.8

NewsFeed is an aggregator for RSS/RDF/Atom feeds. more>>
NewsFeed is an RSS/RDF/Atom reader and aggregator for UNIX-like operating systems, such as FreeBSD, Linux, or MacOS X, as well as Windows. NewsFeed project is written in Python and uses Mark Pilgrims Universal Feed Parser for downloading and parsing feeds.
NewsFeed aims to be easy to setup and use and is something of a clone of NetNewsWire Lite (though admittedly not as Aqua-pretty). It only depends on Tk, no other libraries are required.
NewsFeed provides keyboard shortcuts for all safe actions. One can cycle through new items with the Space key, mark all items in a feed as read with m, and open an item in the browser by pressing o (or Return). See the documentation for more information.
Update intervals and caching times can be set on a per-feed basis. Autodiscovery of feeds is supported. A helper script for dealing with rss://-URIs is provided. Searches are possible, with search results being shown in the feed list like a regular feed and they are also updated live. This is a good way to look group topics from different feeeds. Use "Unsubscribe" to delete a search, just as you would remove a normal feed.
Main features:
- No installation required.
- Easy to sync state between different machines, independent of architecture.
- Keyboard shortcuts for all safe functions.
- Live searches in the vein of smart playlists in iTunes.
- OPML import and export of subscriptions.
- Simple HTML rendering (i.e. no annoying color schemes, text always of readable size, etc.).
- Stable ? no crashes or core dumps, ever.
- Browser-like Back button.
- Items can be marked as important.
- Handles RSS 2.0 enclosures.
- Remembers its window position and size. (Not such a biggie, but far too many programs still dont do it.)
- Works tranparently with proxies, thanks to Pythons urllib module.
- Tk GUI is pretty fast.

Leafnode 1.11.6

Leafnode 1.11.6

Leafnode is a software package that implements a store & forward NNTP proxy. more>>
Leafnode is a software package that implements a store & forward NNTP proxy (client and server) that supports TCP connections across IPv4 and IPv6. Leafnode can be used to give a regular newsreader off-line functionality, merge news articles from several upstream newsservers for newsreaders that only support one server well and avoid duplicate news download for a small LAN with multiple users reading news.

Leafnode is intended for use at home or in small offices. Scalability for large user or newsgroup counts has not been a design goal.

Leafnode is easy to install, requires no maintenance and can run unattended. It will recover from most problems without user intervention if possible. No configuration of a newsfeed at the upstream server is necessary, leafnode looks to the upstream server like a regular newsreader program.

Leafnode will automatically figure which newsgroups are read locally and will download them, and it will stop downloading from these newsgroups if they havent been read locally.

It allows for simple filters to limit the number of articles downloaded, the size or exclude articles with particular headers (Perl-compatible regular expression match). It has a mode to optionally download only headers in a first run, lets the user mark these through his newsreader (note that not all newsreaders will work) and download the full article texts in the next run.

Leafnode works perfectly with most common newsreaders either via NNTP or with traditional spool access.

Leafnode is an Open-Source package and runs on Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, and probably most Unix flavours.

See the changelog for a complete list of changes.
For a detailed list of changes that also include a lot of bugfixes, take a look at the changelog at http://www.rssowl.org/CHANGELOG.txt.
If you want to benefit from many new cool features, you should give RSSOwl 2 a try. Its currently in beta stadium but already fully functional. Visit http://boreal.rssowl.org for more details.
May the Owl be with you,
Ben

Version 1.1.2

We are happy to announce the second bugfix-release for the 1.1 branch. With an update to the latest SWT
version, two of the most annoying Browser bugs on windows got fixed. Say goodbye to the dialog that kept
popping up, in case the visited webpage contained erroneous JavaScript. The other bugfix helps for Blogs
that show images in their Newsitems. In some cases, RSSOwl showed just a blank, empty page when clicking
on one of these.
On the feature side, RSSOwl 1.1.2 is bringing two new update intervals: 30 Minutes and 6 Hours.
In addition it is now possible to hide the small Toolbar that is placed in the Favorites Tree by accessing
its context-menu and unchecking the "Toolbar" entry.
See the Changelog at http://www.rssowl.org/CHANGELOG.txt for a complete list of changes.
May the Owl be with you,
Ben

CWBot 0.8.2

CWBot 0.8.2

CWBot is an IRC bot to provide online services in Morse usable with the CWirc client. more>>
CWBot is an IRC bot to provide online services in Morse usable with the CWirc client. It can broadcast world news in Morse and Hellschreiber, RAC ham news, act as a MorseMail to CWirc repeater, or send fortune cookies in Morse, over an IRC channel or throught DCC chat, with adjustable keying speed and Farnsworth spacing. The project is easily extendable with scripts or external programs to provide additional services in Morse.
Architecture of the bot
CWBot is really composed of two parts : the bot core (the "cwbot" program itself) and the external chat engines.
The bot core
The bot core is a very basic IRC bot that maintains a connection to an IRC server, stays on a channel and replies to "Hello" and "Help". It doesnt do anything else by itself. To interact with users, it relies on external programs (the chat engines) that handle the chatting itself.
The core uses 2 types of chat engines : the channel chat engine, which does the chatting on the IRC channel the bot is on, and the DCC CHAT engine, which chats with individual DCC CHAT requestors. It spawns one instance of the
channel chat engine, and as many instances of the DCC CHAT engine as there are DCC CHAT sessions open. The core handles the translation between IRC or DCC CHAT messages and the chat engines, and takes care of starting/stopping
them transparently.
The chat engines
The chat engines (channel chat engine or DCC CHAT engine) are external programs that read and write plain text messages throught their standard inputs and standard outputs. The channel chat engine is meant to be spawned once and run forever. Should it stop for whatever reason however, the bot core will try to respawn it. The DCC CHAT engine is spawned whenever a DCC CHAT connection opens, and either runs until it decides to stop, provoking the termination of the DCC CHAT session, or until the bot itself terminates the session and kills it. Since there can be more than one DCC CHAT engine running at any given time,
they must be careful not writing to the same files or sharing resouces without talking to each other, if they need to share things.
Enhancements:
- The parser in the news broadcast scripts has been corrected to process the BBCs XML newsfeed properly.

RSSOwl 1.2.3

RSSOwl 1.2.3

RSSOwl is an RSS/RDF/Atom newsreader that uses SWT. more>>
Applications that collect data from RSS-compliant sites are called RSS readers or "aggregators" RSSOwl is such an application.
RSSOwl lets you gather, organize, update, and store information from any compliant source in a convenient, easy to use interface, save selected information in various formats for offline viewing and sharing, and much more.
Its easy to configure, available in many many languages and the best of all: Its platform-independent.
RSS ("Really Simple Syndication" or "Rich Site Summary") is a document specification that gives users the power to collect and organize Web-based news and information in a more efficient manner.
The owl is a traditional symbol of wisdom, and a quiet, efficient hunter. Youll find RSSOwls "big eyes" a big help when scanning the Webs vast array of RSS sources.
Main features:
- Import your favorite newsfeeds using the OPML format. Most newsreaders support the export of newsfeeds via OPML, making it very easy to switch to RSSOwl and have your bookmarked favorites inside RSSOwl.
- Bookmark your favorite newsfeeds in nested categories. Set properties like "auto-update-interval", "open on startup" or "reload on startup".
- RSSOwl helps you finding a suitable title for your favorites. Just click the "Grab title from newsfeed" button and RSSOwl will scan the newsfeed for the title and use it for the new favorite.
- Create collections of newsfeeds other may subscribe to. A subscription is a file that contains newsfeeds. Placing the subscription online will allow others to subscribe to that collection and have the same newsfeeds inside RSSOwl. The subscription is updated each time RSSOwl is starting.
- Switch on the internal browser to read news that contain HTML. Some newsfeeds use this kind of technique to include images and links.
- Select a newsfeed, a single news or an entire category of newsfeeds to export the content into one of the formats PDF, RTF or HTML. When exporting news into PDF, RSSOwl will create bookmarks showing the titles of all news. These are very helpfull when searching for a particular news inside the PDF document.
- RSSOwls internal panels are highly customizable. Choose between a 2-column and a 3-column layout. Hide and restore the tree containing all favorites and the quickview box. Maximize the tabfolder with a single click in order to view a website inside the internal browser with full size.
- A lot of search-options make RSSOwl a powerful application to search inside a newsfeed or an entire category. The boolean operators "and", "or" and "not" may be combined with the search-term. Common options to only match a whole word, regard case-sensitivity or to use regular expressions are allowed. Results are displayed in the tabfolder and each keyword is highlighted inside the newstext.
- AmphetaRate is a centralized ratings/recommendation service that provides personalized news and blog recommendations. Each news found in your subscribed feeds may be rated "Fantastic", "Good", "Moderate", "Bad" and "Very bad". Your recommendations are computed by Bayesian filtering and an algorithm finding people who share your taste.
- The integrated newsfeed-search engine allows to search for newsfeeds by keyword. Simply enter words like "News" or "Linux" and press the search button. Soon the engine will give out a list of newsfeeds. It is also possible to restrict the search to only match newsfeeds that have the same language that RSSOwl has set. Once the search has finished, import all of them into any category with a single click.
- Tired of copying and pasting newsfeeds out of a website into your newsreader? Simply enter the website containing links to newsfeeds into the feed-discovery and RSSOwl will show all the newsfeeds it has found. Import them into any category with a single click. Or enter the URL to an OPML file and gain access to its newsfeeds - its a breeze!
- The integrated feedvalidator allows to check the validity of a newsfeed. Any error or warning is shown inside the validator, together with the line-number. This feature makes the perfect tool for bloggers as theyre able to test their newsfeeds. RSSOwl provides support for RSS 0.91, 0.92 and 2.0 straight "out of the box".
- Access password protected newsfeeds. RSSOwl 1.0 is supporting the Base authentication which is the original and most compatible authentication scheme. But be prepared for RSSOwl 1.1 coming soon which will also support Digest and NTLM authentication that was introduced with HTTP 1.1.
- A small toolbar above the tree containing all favorites allowes to execute the commands "Reload All Favorites", "Aggregate All Favorites", "Search in all Favorites" and "Mark All Favorites Read". Believe us, its a handy feature. :-)
- Place RSSOwl into the system tray on minimization. As soon as RSSOwl is reloading a newsfeed and detects that new, unread news are available it will tell you so.
- RSSOwl is highly customizable. "Preferences" allow to change fonts, languages, colors, hotkeys and a lot more. Export settings into a file to import them into RSSOwl on a different computer. Switch fonts or make yourself comfortable with RSSOwl by choosing one of the 25 languages available - everything is just a few clicks away!
