Pos is an experimental chess program based not on the Shannon algorithm, but on several others. Pos is not a brute force system.

The algorithm used is determined by a genetic (evolutionary) algorithm.

How to run it?

In a terminal

When using the SUN Java 5.0 runtime environment, start it with "java -Xmx384M -jar pos.jar".

Xboard/WinBoard

The program should now fully support xboard/winboard. Start it with commandline "java -Xmx384M -jar pos.jar --io-mode xboard".

For example: xboard -firstChessProgram "java -Xmx384M -jar pos.jar --io-mode xboard"

Gullydeckel Chess Program 2.16pl1

Gullydeckel Chess Program 2.16pl1

Gullydeckel Chess Program project is a simple chess program. more>>
Gullydeckel Chess Program project is a simple chess program.
The Gullydeckel chess playing program allows you to play a game of chess against a not too strong opponent. It has been written by Martin Borriss and is available free of charge on the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL).
You can use Gullydeckel with Linux and Windows. Most people integrate Gullydeckel with a graphical chess board such as WinBoard. Other interfaces are quite possible (Fritz 8, Arena, or Chessbase).
Installing
1. Extract the sources from the archive (e.g., "tar zxf g2_2.13.pl6.tgz")
2. "cd src"
3. "make" (This gives you the gully2 binary.)
4. To have the opening book available, copy the file "book.bin" into the directory where the binary resides. (This is the place and filename searched by default.)
5. Now you are ready to go. You can solve testsuites (in epd/fen format) by typing something like
"gully2 -f ../Tests/bk.epd --time 30"
or play a game using Xboard (e.g., "xboard -fcp gully2").
Enhancements:
- This release removes extra polling code used when pondering structures for detailed evaluation in place.

XBoard 4.2.7

XBoard 4.2.7

XBoard project is a X and Windows graphical chessboard. more>>
XBoard project is a X and Windows graphical chessboard.
XBoard is a graphical chessboard for X that can serve as a user interface for GNU Chess, Crafty, other chess engines, and the Internet Chess Servers.
XBoard can also be used by itself to read and write game files in PGN (portable game notation). WinBoard is a port of XBoard to Microsoft Win32.
You can build xboard on most systems with the following commands.
./configure
make
Enhancements:
- Version 4.2.7 corrects about two dozen bugs in the 4.2.6 release.
- In addition, WinBoard 4.2.7 comes bundled with GNU Chess 5.07 instead of the old 5.02+ version.
- The XBoard and WinBoard source code trees have been merged, so the xboard download now contains the complete source for both.

ics.el 0.4.1

ics.el 0.4.1

ics.el project is an Emacs mode for internet chess server interactions. more>>
ics.el project is an Emacs mode for internet chess server interactions.
ics.el is a comint based Emacs major mode for handling the text portion of communications with internet chess servers such as FICS and ICC.
It is written in Emacs-Lisp and works best in conjunction with a graphical interface such as Xboard.
It handles colour highlighting and "buttonisation" (making certain portions of text active so that, for example, you can challenge opponents with a single mouse click) as well as command recall and editing and automation of commands based on regexps seen in the ICS output, all highly customisable using Emacs lisp.
Enhancements:
- added a require for overlay. This is part of the fsf-compat XEmacs package.
- added escapes into "----" and "++++" parts of regexps since not escaping them broke XEmacs version.
- added test for XEmacs into function tracing devel option
- changed the connection mechanism slightly to use a different variable ics-interface-with-helper-args when CONNECTMETHOD in ics-servers-alist is non-nil. This allows a different xboard commandline to be used if there is a timestamp/timeseal program available, rather than the same commandline with telnet for the helper program (which doesnt work for me anymore under Mandrake Linux 8.0 - I get a connection closed right before the password is prompted for).
- updated the default ics-servers-alist variable for new IP addresses and the BCF server and chess.net
- Fixed wholist buttonisation regexp to recognise "&" between rating and handle.
- Several fixes by John Wiegley to prevent ics.el from breaking other comint based modes - ics.el now uses local hooks instead of polluting the global comint hooks.
- Added support for running the interface program (e.g. xboard) under gdb in the ics sessions. The variable ics-gdb-interface controls this.

Chessweb 1.0 alpha2

Chessweb 1.0 alpha2

Chessweb is a J2EE chess game Website. more>>
Chessweb is a J2EE chess game Website. It is a pure Java servlet implementation of a two-player chess game.

Two players log into the Web site, see an image of the current board in their browser, and make their moves.

The differentiating features of chessweb (e.g. versus WinBoard / XBoard) is that its an extremely lightweight implementation written completely in Java (nothing more than an app server and browser is required).

Furthermore, the client end is DHTML only, and verified to works with FireFox 1.0.6 and IE 6.

Slibo 0.4.4

Slibo project is a chess interface and engine for KDE. more>>
Slibo project is a chess interface and engine for KDE.

Slibo aims to be a comfortable replacement for the xboard chess interface, written for OpenGL and KDE.

It uses the xboard protocol and can be used with common chess engines like crafty or gnuchess, but it provides its own chess engine too.

Though its designed to be easy to use for the new chess player, it supports playing multiple games the same time, or anaylzing PGN files with multiple engines.

miniCHESS 0.8

miniCHESS 0.8

miniCHESS is a chess game WindowMaker dockapp. more>>
miniCHESS is a chess game WindowMaker dockapp.

miniCHESS was born out of boredom. I warn you... if your a chess enthusiast and play a lot then please use xboard or some other chess gui.

Even though miniCHESS has that kinda cool factor, it does get hard on the eyes. I like using miniCHESS for games in which Im in no hurry to finish and go on for a couple days.

Sorry but miniCHESS has no save/restore features yet.

Usage:

miniCHESS has a variety of options:

-h help
-t play text game (def = mouse game)
-r more random moves by the engine
-a hard, engine will also think on your time (def = no)
-d n max search depth used by the engine (def = 29)
-c n max time the engine gets to make a move (def = inf)
-T n size of the transposition table (def = 150001)
-C n size of the cache table (def = 18001)
-k #color background color for a checkmated king (def = #ff0000)
-b #color background color for the black pieces (def = #000000)
-f #color foreground color for the black pieces (def = #ffffff)
-1 #color color for the dark squares (def = #c8c365)
-2 #color color for the light squares (def = #77a26d)

If you specify a search depth (-d) to (say) 4 ply, the program will search until all moves have been examined to a depth of 4. If you set a maximum time (-t) per move and also use the depth option, the search will stop at the specified time or the specified depth, whichever comes first.

Gnuchess is a cpu hog while its thinking. Be aware. When the hard option (-a) is specified then the engine thinks all the time and pins your cpu.

Also gnuchess can be a memory hog. Specifying the size of the transposition and cache tables will modify the memory used. See the memory usage excerpt from the gnuchess FAQ below.

White piece colors are the reverse of what is specified for the black pieces.
