Puppy Linux 4.2.1

Puppy Linux 4.2.1

Puppy Linux provides you with a perfect and very useful evolutionary operating system which is based on GNU Linux. more>>

Puppy Linux 4.2.1 provides you with a perfect and very useful evolutionary operating system which is based on GNU Linux. Whats different here is that Puppy is extraordinarily small, yet quite full featured. Puppy Linux can boot into a 64MB ramdisk, and that's it, the whole caboodle runs in RAM. Unlike live CD distributions that have to keep pulling stuff off the CD, Puppy in its entirety loads into RAM. This means that all applications start in the blink of an eye and respond to user input instantly.

Major Features:

  1. Puppy Linux has the ability to boot off a flash card or any USB memory device (flash-Puppy), CDROM (live-Puppy), Zip disk or LS/120/240 Superdisk (zippy-Puppy), floppy disks (floppy-Puppy), internal hard drive (hard-Puppy).
  2. Puppy occupies about 50-60M on my USB Flash drive, CDROM, or whatever is the storage media.
  3. When Puppy boots, everything uncompressed into a RAM area that we call a "ramdisk". The live-CD will bootup on systems with only 32M RAM, but the more RAM you have the more Puppy is able to keep files permanently in ramdisk hence more speed. A PC with 128M RAM is the recommended minimum.
  4. Note that Puppy will automatically use a swap partition if it exists. When booting from a USB Flash device, Puppy tries to load all the Flash files into physical RAM, but if there is not enough RAM then Puppy is able to copy the excess to a swap partition if it exists. This eliminates writes to the Flash memory during a session, greatly extending its life span.
  5. You may need to have a swap partition to run Firefox or Mozilla on PCs with less than 64M RAM. Certainly, for a PC with only 32M RAM, a swap partition is necessary to run most of the large GUI applications.

Enhancements:

  • CUPS-1.3.10 regressed from 1.4b2 to resolve ongoing issues with CUPS printing.
  • Fixed printing from Geany, Leafpad and Gnumeric using CUPS-1.3.10
  • Abiword-2.6.3 with 2.6.6 plugins has been patched for improved .doc & .docx support (Liberation ttf fonts required for some documents)
  • Pwidgets updated to 2.0.8
  • Pcrypt updated to 17 May 2009 release and now requires Ccrypt to function. Bcrypt has been dropped in consequence.
  • Ccrypt-1.7 added as dependency for Pcrypt
  • MIME-types updated in Rox-2.6.1
  • Patches for gtk+ Xinput and b43 broadcom network driver
  • Pmusic updated to 0.6.4
  • Pschedule updated to 0.7
  • Plus previously issued patches for nbtscan, mountcifs, jwm-tray, xsane, network wizard (now at April 4 release), mtpaint-snapshot, gtk+2.12.1-Xinput-fix and pcp (Puppy control panel).

PING 1.10 / 2.00 RC7

PING 1.10 / 2.00 RC7

PING is a live Linux ISO, based on the excellent RIP (Recovery Is Possible) distribution. more>>
PING is a live Linux ISO, based on the excellent RIP (Recovery Is Possible) distribution. PING can be burnt on a CD and booted, or integrated in a PXE / RIS environment.
Several tools have been added and written, so to make this ISO the perfect choice to backup and restore whole partitions, an easy way. It sounds like Symantec Ghost(tm), but has even better features, and is totally free.
Main features:
- Backup and Restore partitions or files to a MS Network Shared directory;
- Backup and Restore the BIOS data as well;
- Either burn a bootable CD / DVD, either integrate within a PXE / RIS environment;
- Possibility to Blank local admins password;
- Create your own restoration bootable DVD (see the Howto Documentation);
- Partition and Format a disk before installing Windows (so to make sure your unattended Windows installation will happen on the right partition);
Specific advantages Linux brings you over DOS and Ghost :
- Most network cards automatically recognized by the Kernel (unlike DOS);
- Most CD/DVD readers automatically recognized by the Kernel (unlike DOS);
- You dont have to run a Ghostcast server to receive images over the network.
Whats New in 2.00 RC7 Development Release:
- NTFS filesystems were not being resized to the maximum size that the partition could contain, though logging reported such.
- An occasional hang on some systems when it came to mount NTFS partitions was fixed.
- For an unknown reason, using NTFS-3G drivers rather than native kernel drivers seems to resolve the issue.
- The kernel was updated to Linux 2.6.22.4.
- Some more network and S-ATA/SCSI drivers have been compiled.

Ghost for Linux project is a hard disk and partition imaging and cloning tool similar to "Norton Ghost" and by Symantec.
The created images are optionally compressed, and they can be stored on a local hard drive or transferred to an anonymous FTP server.
A drive can be cloned using the "ClicknClone" function. g4l supports file splitting if the local filesystem does not support writing files >2GB. The included kernel supports ATA, serial-ATA, and SCSI drives.
Common network cards are supported. It is packaged as a bootable CD image with an ncurses GUI for easy use.
Enhancements:
- This release adds new kernels and syslinux, plus other support program options.
- It adds ntfs-3g to support writing to ntfs partitions for the local backup images and adds ntfsclone backups to local drives or partitions.
- Users can now copy the files from the CD image to a flash drive that has been made bootable, and it will then work from flash.

linHDD 0.4

linHDD 0.4

linHDD is a hard drive utility. more>>
linHDD is a hard drive utility. Frontend to several functions of basic Linux drive utilities: hdparm, cfdisk, df, and mkfs.

Nice to add a second drive from the GUI. Or use it to display free space, extended drive information and test read-speed. A convenience app, it can save a user time, avoid problems from typos and presents a friendly interface to newcomers and those who would rather not memorize console-based commands.

The initial release only deals with ide hard drives, no scsi/sata -- only because I dont have the board/drive(s) to test them with. Should be a simple matter of adding cat /proc/scsi/scsi stuff. But if I cant test it then I cannot, in good conscious, write it.

linHDD acts as a fontend for some basic Linux tools, which should all be on your machine already. hdparm gives the detailed drive information shown in the large textbox. Also enables testing the HDD read speed in MB/s. df, (which lists mounted devices), mkfs and its relatives for formatting (supporting ext2, ext3, reiserfs, xfs, jfs -- if they are supported on your machine.) And cfdisk pops up if you choose to partition a drive.

For safety and sanity I designed linHDD so that it will not allow any partitioning on a mounted Hard Drive. Nor will it allow formatting on a mounted partition. And lastly, ANY partitioning or formatting must be done as root. Below is a shot of the response when trying to partition a drive when one of its partitions was already mounted.

You can run linHDD as user (as opposed to root) and check out your drive space, all the detailed drive information in the textbox and even run the speed tests. You simply wont be able to format or partition.

Partition Image 0.6.6

Partition Image 0.6.6

Partition Image is a Linux/UNIX utility which saves partitions in many formats. more>>
Partition Image application is a Linux/UNIX utility which saves partitions in many formats (see below) to an image file.
The image file can be compressed in the GZIP/BZIP2 formats to save disk space, and split into multiple files to be copied on removable floppies (ZIP for example); partitions can be saved across the network since version 0.6.0.
Partition Image will only copy data from the used portions of the partition. For speed and efficiency, free blocks are not written to the image file.
This is unlike the dd command, which also copies empty blocks. Partition Image also works for large, very full partitions. For example, a full 1 GB partition can be compressed with gzip down to 400MB.
This is very useful to save partitions to an image in some cases:
- First you can restore your linux partition if there is a problem (virus, file system errors, manipulation error) . When you have a problem, you just have to restore the partition, and after 10 minutes, you have the original partition. You can write the image to a CD-R if you dont want the image to use hard-disk space.
- This utility can be used to install many identical PCs. For example, if you buy 50 PCs, with the same hardware, and you want to install the same linux systems on all 50 PCs, you will save a lot of time. Indeed, you just have to install on the first PC and create an image from it. For the 49 others, you can use the image file and Partition Images restore function.

GNU Parted 1.8.8

GNU Parted 1.8.8

GNU Parted is a partition editor, for creating, destroying, resizing and copying partitions. more>>
GNU Parted is a program for creating, resizing, destroying, checking and copying partitions, and the file systems on them. This is useful for creating space for new operating systems, reorganising disk usage, copying data between hard disks and disk imaging.
Supported disk labels: raw access (useful for RAID and LVM), MS-DOS partition tables, Intel GPT partition tables, MIPS partition tables, PC98 partition tables, Sun and BSD disk labels and Macintosh partition maps.
Notes:
- For ext2, ext3 and reiserfs: the start of the partition must stay fixed.
- For ext2, ext3: the partition you copy to must be bigger or exactly the same size as the partition you copy from.
- For ext2 and ext3: the checking is limited to ensuring the resize and copy commands will be ok.
- For fat: the size of the new partition after resizing or copying is restricted by the cluster size. Parted can shrink the cluster size, so you can always shrink your partition. However, if you cant use FAT32 for some reason, you may not be able to grow your partition.
- Parted supports both FAT16 and FAT32. Parted can convert file systems between FAT16 and FAT32, if necessary.
- Reiserfs support is enabled if you install libreiserfs.

SystemImager 3.8.2 / 3.9.2

SystemImager 3.8.2 / 3.9.2

SystemImager is a Linux cloning/replication and synchronization software. more>>
SystemImager is software that automates Linux installs, software distribution, and production deployment.
SystemImager makes it easy to do automated installs (clones), software distribution, content or data distribution, configuration changes, and operating system updates to your network of Linux machines. You can even update from one Linux release version to another!
It can also be used to ensure safe production deployments. By saving your current production image before updating to your new production image, you have a highly reliable contingency mechanism. If the new production enviroment is found to be flawed, simply roll-back to the last production image with a simple update command!
Some typical environments include: Internet server farms, database server farms, high performance clusters, computer labs, and corporate desktop environments.
Whats New in 3.8.2 Stable Release:
- fixed a bug in the monitoring: REBOOTED state was not properly reported in some minimal image (without the command which)
- added "--config FILE" option to si_prepareclient and si_mkbootpackage (and removed from si_mkautoinstalldisk: the option must be used in commands that explicitly create an initrd.img from initrd_template)
- do not hard-code common patterns of exclusion in si_getimage (created the configuration file /etc/systemimager/getimage.exclude)
- si_getimage didnt stop correctly the rsync daemon in the golden client, using rsync over ssh for the image retrieval
Whats New in 3.9.2 Development Release:
- Added support for the PS3 architecture
- Improved support and compatibility with Debian (now deb packages can be automatically built from source using the new target "make deb")
- updated BOEL kernel to 2.6.21 (for i386 and x86_64)
- fixed a bug that broke si_mkautoinstalldisk
- free unused RAM of the initramfs (only with cpio initrd.img) after switching to tmpfs
- updated udev to udev_108-0ubuntu4
- support old versions of the BitTorrent client (better compatibilty with *Ubuntu)
- fixed a lib/lib64 bug with ppc64
- fixed a bug in si_monitor daemon that didnt start correctly when the directory /var/lock/systemimager was not present
- added missing manpages
- remount the filesystems in read-only before giving-up when the umount fails at the end of the installation
- create all the swap partitions before the other filesystems in the autoinstall script: this avoids potential OOM conditions that could occur during the filesystem creation
- removed unused coreutils package from initrd.img
- removed unmaintained package imagemanip
- removed deprecated command si_mkbootmedia

BeleniX 0.6.1

BeleniX 0.6.1

BeleniX is an OS distribution based on OpenSolaris codebase. more>>
BeleniX is an OS distribution based on OpenSolaris codebase. At present BeleniX is a basic LiveCD distribution that boots directly off the CD into a multiuser shell. The name BeleniX is derived after the Sun God Belenos in Celtic Mythology (Do you read Asterix ?).
This distribution includes all the OpenSolaris bits in addition to other GNU/OSS software. At present the distro only supports 32 bit x86 platforms even though OpenSolaris supports AMD64 as well. Support for booting the LiveCD with AMD64 is in the works.
Main features:
- Boots into a 32bit multiuser console login prompt. Support for GUI via Xorg and a desktop environment is coming shortly.
- UserName: root, Password: belenix
- It is based on the OpenSolaris build 20 source base.
- Since it only boots into a shell without GUI, it can run in about 200MB RAM though a minimum of 256MB is good.
- It will scan the harddisk for recognizable partitions and automatically mount them. This will Not mess with any data on the harddisk. This is basically a recovery feature.
- It will try to use physical swap if the harddisk already has a formatted Solaris partition. This helps reduce RAM usage for swap.
- It automatically starts DHCP and will configure DNS/NIS via the eventhook mechanism if the DHCP server supports it.
- It allows the user to configure the Keyboard layout via a simple UI during bootup.
- Uses a 60MB space optimised ramdisk for the root filesystem.
It includes various software packages like:
- Dan Micks prtpci script that dumps PCI info in human readable format. Somewhat like lspci in Linux.
- Casper Diks acpi, AMD powernow drivers and powernow utility for CPU frequency scaling.
- Masayuki Murayamas open source network drivers.
- Juergen Keils audio drivers for Solaris.
- Includes a Grub splash screen derived from one of Chandans excellent collection.
Includes the following GNU/OSS software:
- gcc 3.4, GNU assembler (from binutils)
- Bison, Flex
- GNU Gettext, Gmake, Gtar
- Gzip and Bzip2
- Less
- Layer 4 Traceroute (an enhanced traceroute utility)
- Libiconv, Libpcap, Ncurses
- Lynx, Vim, Wget
- Top process status utility
- GNU Screen (Terminal Multiplexor)
- The aperture driver which is required to eventually get X11 working on this distro.
- Perl 5.8.4 which comes default with OpenSolaris
- Fontconfig, Freetype2, Expat: These will be required by Xorg X11 server.
- The FreeBSD math library ported to work with OpenSolaris. This is essential for a self-hosting OpenSolaris distribution

pam_mount module 0.19

pam_mount module 0.19

pam_mount is a Pluggable Authentication Module that can mount volumes for a user session. more>>
pam_mount is a Pluggable Authentication Module that can mount volumes for a user session.
This module is aimed at environments with SMB (Samba or Windows NT) or NCP (Netware or Mars-NWE) servers that Unix users wish to access transparently. It facilitates access to private volumes of these types well.
The module also supports mounting home directories using loopback encrypted filesystems. The module was originally written for use on the GNU/Linux operating system but has since been modified to work on several flavors of BSD.
- Every user can access his own volumes
- The user needs to type the password just once (at login)
- The mounting process is transparent to the users
- There is no need to keep the login passwords in any additional file
- The volumes are unmounted upon logout, so it saves system resources, avoiding the need of listing every every possibly useful remote volume in /etc/fstab or in an automount/supermount config file. This is also necessary for securing encrypted filesystems.
pam_mount "understands" SMB, NCP, and any type of filesystem that can be mounted using the standard mount command. If someone has a particular need for a different filesystem, feel free to ask me to include it and send me patches.
If you intend to use pam_mount to protect volumes on your computer using an encrypted filesystem system, please know that there are many other issues you need to consider in order to protect your data.
For example, you probably want to disable or encrypt your swap partition (the cryptoswap can help you do this). Dont assume a system is secure without carefully considering potential threats.
Enhancements:
- pam_mount now uses an XML config file, which also has a few new variables and options.
- Support for truecrypt was added.

Set::Partition is a Perl module that can enumerate all arrangements of a set in fixed subsets.

SYNOPSIS

use Set::Partition;

my $s = Set::Partition->new(
list => [qw(a b c d e)],
partition => [2, 3],
);
while (my $p = $s->next) {
print join( , map { "(@$_)" } @$p ), $/;
}
# produces
(a b) (c d e)
(a c) (b d e)
(a d) (b c e)
(a e) (b c d)
(b c) (a d e)
(b d) (a c e)
(b e) (a c d)
(c d) (a b e)
(c e) (a b d)
(d e) (a b c)

# or with a hash
my $s = Set::Partition->new(
list => { b => bat, c => cat, d => dog },
partition => [2, 1],
);
while (my $p = $s->next) {
...
}

Set::Partition takes a list or hash of elements and a list numbers that represent the sizes of the partitions into which the list of elements should be arranged.
The resulting object can then be used as an iterator which returns a reference to an array of lists, that represents the original list arranged according to the given partitioning. All possible arrangements are returned, and the object returns undef when the entire combination space has been exhausted.
