Less 436

Less 436 is designed as a pager which displays text files, and is often used in command-line environments like the Unix shell and the MS-DOS command prompt to display files. more>>

Less 436 is designed as a pager which displays text files, and is often used in command-line environments like the Unix shell and the MS-DOS command prompt to display files.

Windowed environments like the Windows and Macintosh desktops don't need pagers as much, since they have other methods for viewing files.

Less is not an editor. You can't change the contents of the file you're viewing. Less is not a windowing system. It doesn't have fancy scroll bars or other GUI (graphical user interface) elements. It was designed to work on simple text-only terminals.

Less has been used by thousands of people around the world since its release in 1985.

Major Features:

  1. Backwards movement
    • It's hard to believe some people are still using pagers that don't let you move backwards in the file. Even pagers that do let you move backwards often don't work when viewing "standard input"; that is, data that is being piped into the pager from another program.
  2. Searching and highlighting
    • Less lets you search for text in the file you're viewing. You can search forwards and backwards. Furthermore, less highlights the text that matches your search, to make it easy to see where the match is.
  3. Multiple files
    • Less allows you to switch between any number of different files, remembering your position in each file. You can also do a single search which spans all the files you are working with.
  4. Bold and underline
    • Some text files, notably Unix-style "man pages", use overstriking (backspaces) to simulate underlined and bold text. Less interprets this overstriking and displays the text in real underlined or bold mode.
  5. Advanced features
    • Less has a large number of fancy features for advanced users. Once you learn the basics, you'll find you can customize less to do almost anything you want it to do. You can change key bindings, set different tab stops, set up filters to view compressed data or other file types, customize the prompt, display line numbers, use "tag" files, and more.
  6. Portability
    • Less is available on many different machines, different system architectures, and different terminals. Pretty much wherever you go, you'll find less. You won't have to learn how to use a different pager on every system you use.

drun 1.0.3

drun 1.0.3

drun 1.0.3 provides you with an outstanding and powerfulGTK run dialog box with tab completion and a simple ui, which supports common features as well as history, files, directories, urls, and more>>
drun 1.0.3 provides you with an outstanding and powerfulGTK run dialog box with tab completion and a simple ui, which supports common features as well as history, files, directories, urls, and spelling correction.

Usage:

Type in a command, and press return to run it. Tab, up, and down can be used to cycle through possible completions for that command. Delete can be used to remove a completion from the list and history. Escape dismisses the completions or exits. Return runs a command, and Shift+Return runs a command in a terminal.

If you press tab on an empty entry, then you will get a list of recently run commands in the order that you last ran them. Otherwise, it will attempt to complete an executable, directory, or file. The completions will then be ordered by how many times they were previously run. A name beginning with an equals symbol will be expanded based on where it is located in the system path. If no completions are found, then your input will be manipulated based on spell checking to find any possible completions.

The programs used to run files, directories, and urls can be edited in ~/.drunrc:

  • http-handler = firefox
  • ssh-handler = xterm -e ssh
  • file-handler = gnome-open
  • directory-handler = nautilus
  • terminal-handler = xterm -e

Normally, drun will run commands in the current directory it was launched in. If a single directory is passed in as a parameter, then it will run the command in that directory. If a non-directory or multiple files are passed in as a parameter, then it will run the command in the directory of the first parameter, and append the list of files to the end of the command.

Custom run actions can be added to thunars right-click menu by configuring them from thunars edit menu.
You can add the following commands to be able to run commands in a directory or on selections of files from a thunar window. Similar actions are possible from other file managers such as nautilus.

Major Features:

  1. Tab completion
  2. History
  3. Runs files, directories, urls, and executables
  4. Runs on thunar/nautilus file and directory selections
  5. Spelling correction
  6. Recursive directory completion
  7. Completions ordered using history
  8. Completes parameters from history

Enhancements:

  • Run terminal on shift+return or control+return
  • Run terminal in directory if shift+return or control+return is pressed with a path
  • Modified reverse search behaviour
  • Complete directories from history as well as file system
  • Go to parent directory on alt+up, undo on alt+down
  • Allow running of shortcuts and documents on Windows
  • Allow * glob in input

Pak 1.1

Pak 1.1

Pak transfers multiple, possibly very big, regular files between possibly different hosts you have shell access to. more>>

Pak 1.1 is a great application for Linux users. This powerful utility can transfer multiple, possibly very big, regular files between possibly different hosts you have shell access to.

It transmits segment IDs instead of file names and uses on-the-fly Blowfish-CBC encryption while being absolutely restartable with practically no loss of data already transmitted.

Encrypted pak streams can be stored in intermediary regular files on untrusted hosts. Several stored pak streams, even truncated ones, can be merged for re-piping without decryption. Integrity is never checked. File offsets of any magnitude are supported via recompilation (the default width is 64 bits). Either UNIX 95 or UNIX 98 conformance is required and sufficient.

The individual binaries are:

  • pak - create a stream from regular files, based on a portion ("segment") list
  • upak - completely write out regular file segments from a stream
  • pakmerge - merge multiple streams in regular files into a single stream
  • paksplit - split a stream into regular stream files of fixed size
  • mklist - create a segment list
  • The name "stream" is somewhat unfortunately chosen. It doesn't have to do anything with STREAMS or with stdio streams. It denotes a very simple file format.

Major Features:

  1. Transfer multiple, possibly very big, regular files between possibly different hosts you have shell access to without transmitting any file names.
  2. Supports on-the-fly Blowfish-CBC encryption
  3. Easy and portable to handle, transfer and format/scan file offsets of any magnitude. This is achieved with a handful of very naive and simple "bignum" functions.
  4. Portability and fun (as opposed to efficiency) were the primary aspects of development.

Enhancements:

  • The programs "pak" and "pakmerge" were modified to flush stdout before printing "segment done" messages to stderr ("Paksplit" and "upak" already did this for output files.) This way, whenever the user sees a "segment done" message, he/she can be sure that even the last chunk of the segment was passed to the kernel via write().

Tie::FieldVals 0.40

Tie::FieldVals 0.40

Tie::FieldVals is an array tie for a file of enhanced Field:Value data. more>>
Tie::FieldVals is an array tie for a file of enhanced Field:Value data.

SYNOPSIS

use Tie::FieldVals;
use Tie::FieldVals::Row;

# tie the array
my @records;
my $recs_obj = tie @records, Tie::FieldVals, datafile=>$datafile;

# object methods
my @field_names = $recs_obj->field_names();

This is a Tie object to map the records in an enhanced Field:Value data file into an array. Each file has multiple records, each record has its values defined by a Field:Value pair, with the enhancements that (a) the Value part can extend over more than one line (because the Field names are predefined) and (b) Fields can have multiple values by repeating the Field:Value part for a given field.

Because of its use of the Tie::File module, access to each record is reasonably fast. The Tie::File module also ensures that (a) the whole file doesnt have to be read into memory (b) record changes are written to the file straight away (c) record changes dont require the whole file to be rewritten, just the part of the file after the change.

The advantage of this setup is that one can have useful data files which are plain text, human readable, human editable, and at the same time able to be accessed faster than using XML (I know, I wrote a version of my reporting software using XML data, and even the fastest XML parsers werent as fast as this setup, once there were a reasonable number of records). This also has advantages over a simpler setup where values are given one per line with no indication of what value belongs to what field; the problems with that is that it is harder to fix corrupted data by hand, and it is harder to add new fields, and one cant have multi-line data.

It is likewise better than a CSV (Comma-Separated Values) file, because again, with a CSV file, the data is positional and therefore harder to fix and harder to change, and again one cant have multi-line data.

This module is both better and worse than file-oriented databases like DB_File and its variants and extensions (such as MLDBM). This module does not require that each record have a unique key, and the fact that a DBM file is binary makes it not only less correctable, but also less portable. On the downside, this module isnt as fast.

Naturally, if ones data needs are more complex, it is probably better to use a fully-fledged database; this is oriented towards those who dont wish to have the overhead of setting up and maintaining a relational database server, and wish to use something more straightforward.

This comes bundled with other support modules, such as the Tie::FieldVals::Row module. The Tie::FieldVals::Select module is for selecting and sorting a sub-set from a Tie::FieldVals array, and the Tie::FieldVals::Join is a very simple method of joining two files on a common field.

This distribution includes the fv2xml script, which converts a Tie::FieldVals data file into an XML file, and xml2fv which converts an XML file into a Tie::FieldVals data file.

Partition Image 0.6.6

Partition Image 0.6.6

Partition Image is a Linux/UNIX utility which saves partitions in many formats. more>>
Partition Image application is a Linux/UNIX utility which saves partitions in many formats (see below) to an image file.
The image file can be compressed in the GZIP/BZIP2 formats to save disk space, and split into multiple files to be copied on removable floppies (ZIP for example); partitions can be saved across the network since version 0.6.0.
Partition Image will only copy data from the used portions of the partition. For speed and efficiency, free blocks are not written to the image file.
This is unlike the dd command, which also copies empty blocks. Partition Image also works for large, very full partitions. For example, a full 1 GB partition can be compressed with gzip down to 400MB.
This is very useful to save partitions to an image in some cases:
- First you can restore your linux partition if there is a problem (virus, file system errors, manipulation error) . When you have a problem, you just have to restore the partition, and after 10 minutes, you have the original partition. You can write the image to a CD-R if you dont want the image to use hard-disk space.
- This utility can be used to install many identical PCs. For example, if you buy 50 PCs, with the same hardware, and you want to install the same linux systems on all 50 PCs, you will save a lot of time. Indeed, you just have to install on the first PC and create an image from it. For the 49 others, you can use the image file and Partition Images restore function.

AFD 1.3.5

AFD 1.3.5

AFD is a program to automatically distribute files either locally or to remote hosts. more>>
AFD comes from Automatic File Distributor and provides a framework for very flexible, non-stop, log and debug-able delivery of an arbitrary amount of files to multiple recipients as expressed in URLs (currently mailing and ftp supported with the mailto://user@domain and ftp://user:password@host URL conventions). AFD stands for Automatic File Distributor.
The most common technique used to distribute data is for each individual to fetch the data from one common place. This place can be a database, FTP-server or even the WWW (World Wide Web). However, this is not always the most user or customer friendly way for a company or organization to distribute its products. For this reason AFD (Automatic File Distributor) was developed, to provide a better service to users or customers in transporting the required data directly to the location where it is required.
When distributing files to a remote host it does so via the FTP or SMTP protocol. Local distribution is done by simply copying files from one directory to another. To distribute files, the AFD has one central configuration file (DIR_CONFIG), where the system administrator can specify which files are to be distributed and where they are to be sent.
Main features:
- The AFD can send/retrieve any type of file, regardless of contents and the name of the file.
- Only the files are being distributed, no other additional information is send with the file.
- The AFD has a very sophisticated and compact X11 interface to monitor and control the distribution of files (afd_ctrl). It has the ability to do extensive logging of all activities, even down to tracing each individual FTP/SMTP command.
- Files can be send to places where no AFD is installed.
- There can be more than one process distributing files to a single host. This has the advantage that when a large file is currently being distributed, other files dont have to wait until the large file is done.
- Where net capacity is limited, it is possible to distribute files with priority.
- If the transfer gets interrupted, AFD can append files. So data that has already been transmitted will not be send again.
- It is possible to setup a whole network of AFDs that can be monitored and controlled through a single interface (mon_ctrl).
Version restrictions:
- The AFD requires X11R5 and Motif 1.2.x (or higher).
Enhancements:
- Files that have been distributed or are to be distributed can now be viewed via show_olog and show_queue dialog.
- A new interface for acknowledging errors was added.
- All events are logged into a separate log file.
- The pattern matching function was enhanced so that it can also handle [] brackets.
- More syntax checks were added for options in DIR_CONFIG.

Large Database Backup 1.0

Large Database Backup 1.0

Large Database Backup is a PHP class can be used to backup large MySQL databases into multiple files. more>>
Large Database Backup is a PHP class can be used to backup large MySQL databases into multiple files.

It can list the tables of a given MySQL database and generate SQL statements to create and insert records with the current values of the table rows, as if it was creating a new database. The class stores the generated SQL statements in files.

A full backup process can be split in multiple iterations to not exceed PHP default script execution time limit. Each iteration dumps a limited number of table rows. An iteration can be executed by a script that redirects the page request to itself at the end to proceed to the next iteration.

DWH_File 0.24

DWH_File 0.24

DWH_File module contains data and object persistence in deep and wide hashes. more>>
DWH_File module contains data and object persistence in deep and wide hashes.

SYNOPSIS

use DWH_File qw/ GDBM_File /;
# the use argument set the DBM module used

tie( %h, DWH_File, myFile, O_RDWR|O_CREAT, 0644 );

untie( %h ); # essential!

Note: the files produced by DWH_File 0.22 are in a different format and are incompatible with the files produced by previous versions.

DWH_File is used in a manner resembling NDBM_File, DB_File etc. These DBM modules are limited to storing flat scalar values. References to data such as arrays or hashes are stored as useless strings and the data in the referenced structures will be lost.

DWH_File uses one of the DBM modules (configurable through the parameters to use()), but extends the functionality to not only save referenced data structures but even object systems.

This is why I made it. It makes it extremely simple to achieve persistence in object oriented Perl programs and you can skip the cumbersome interaction with a conventional database.

DWH_File tries to make the tied hash behave as much like a standard Perl hash as possible. Besides the capability to store nested data structures DWH_File also implements exists(), delete() and undef() functionality like that of a standard hash (as opposed to all the DBM modules).

MULTIPLE DBM FILES

It is possible to distribute for instance an object system over several files if wanted. This might be practical to avoid huge single files and may also make it easier make a reasonable structure in the data. If this feature is used the same set of files should be tied each time if any of the contents that may refer across files is altered. See MODELS.

GARBAGE COLLECTION

DWH_File uses a garbage collection scheme similar to that of Perl itself. This means that you actually dont have to worry about freeing anything (see the cyclic reference caveat though). Just like Perl DWH_File will remove entries that nothing is pointing to (and therefore noone can ever get at). If youve got a key whose value refers to an array for instance, that array will be swept away if you assign something else to the key. Unless theres a reference to the array somewhere else in the structure. This works even across different dbm files when using multiple files.

The garbage collection housekeeping is performed at untie time - so it is mandatory to call untie (and if you keep any references to the tied object to undef those in advance). Otherwise youll leave the object at the mercy of global destruction and garbage wont be properly collected.

MUTUAL EXCLUSION

Ealier versions had some specialized locking schemes to deal with concurrency in eg. web-applications. I havnt put any into this version, and I think Ill leave them out to avoid scope creep.

The reason for having those features were that locking dbm-files isnt as straightforward as locking ordinary files. I find now, that the best solution is to use some of the generalized mechanisms for handling concurrency. There are some fine perl modules for facilitating the use of semaphores for instance.

LOGGING

Earlier versions had a logging feature. I havent put it into this new generation of DWH_File yet. If you need it, send me a mail. That might tempt me.

Minimum Profit 5.0.0 RC2

Minimum Profit 5.0.0 RC2

Minimum Profit is a programmers text editor. more>>
Minimum Profit is a FREE text editor for programmers.
If you are reading this (you are), you probably know what a text editor is and thus I wont explain what open file, search and replace, tab size and things like those, means. Only the special or not-so-intuitive features will be explained. In any other aspect, mp is just like
the text editor you were using until today, before youve found this unknown jewel that will change your life.
Much of Minimum Profits behaviour is changeable from a configuration file, as key bindings, colors, the menu and other variables. Take a look at mprc.sample for details. The configuration files for Unix systems are /etc/mprc and $HOME/.mprc (see below to know how to set it in Win32).
Minimum Profit includes several interfaces:
- curses: the good old text interface. You need any Unix (Linux, Solaris, IRIX, any BSD...) and the curses or ncurses library. It was also sucessfully compiled under BeOS (with a locally compiled ncurses) many years ago.
- GTK: You need any X11 system with the GTK+ libraries installed. Support for GTK versions 1.2 and 2.0 is provided.
- Win32: You need Microsoft Windows 95 or later and the lccwin32 compiler.
Main features:
- Multiple files can be edited at the same time and blocks copied and pasted among them.
- Syntax highlighting for many popular languages / file formats: C, C++, Perl, Shell Scripts, Ruby, Php, SQL, Python, HTML...
- Creative use of tags: tags created by the external utility ctags are used to move instantaneously to functions or variables inside your current source tree. Tags are visually highlighted (underlined), and symbol completion can be triggered to avoid typing your own function names over and over.
- Intelligent help system: pressing F1 over any word of a text being edited triggers the underlying system help (calling man when editing C or Shell files, perldoc with Perl, ri on Ruby, winhelp on MS Windows...).
- Understandable interface: drop-down menus, reasonable default key bindings.
- Configurable keys, menus and colors.
- Text templates can be easily defined / accessed.
- Multiplatform: Console/curses, GTK+ (1.2 and 2.0), MS Windows.
- Automatic indentation, word wrapping, internal grep, learning / repeating functions.
- Search and replace using plain text or regular expressions (including a special function to replace text on all open files).
- Small memory footprint.
- Multilingual.
- Password-protected, encrypted text files (using the ARCFOUR algorithm).
- It helps you abandon vi, emacs and other six-legged freaks definitely.
- Awesome easter egg.
Installation
To compile under any Unix flavour, just run
$ ./config.sh
$ make
The first step should automatically detect all usable interfaces and
additional libraries and leave a Makefile behind. Previous Minimum Profit
versions used to need GNU Make; this is no longer true. By running
$ ./config.sh --help
you can see a list of tweakable options. Also, a bunch of README.* files are
included with Minimum Profits standard distribution with information
specific to many systems and cross-compilers. Notoriously, if you have
the mingw32 cross-compiler suite in your Unix system, you can build an
MS Windows binary pretty easily (README.mingw32).
To install just run (as root):
# make install
and it will be instaled in /usr/local/bin. You can select an alternate
installation directory in the configuration phase; for example, to install
it on /usr/bin, do
$ ./config.sh --prefix=/usr/bin
Enhancements:
- This new release features a new complete action, that asks for completion on the current word using any of the words found in the same document, a new redo action, to revert undo operations, the global configuration file `/etc/mp.mpsl is also executed, in the replace action, the substitution string can contain the special character and , that will be replaced by the matched string (as in the `sed command line tool), and more documentation.
