LAME MP3 Encoder 3.98.2
Today, LAME is considered the best MP3 encoder at mid-high bitrates and at VBR. more>> LAME development started around mid-1998. Mike Cheng started it as a patch against the 8hz-MP3 encoder sources. After some quality concerns raised by others, he decided to start from scratch based on the dist10 sources. His goal was only to speed up the dist10 sources, and leave its quality untouched. That branch (a patch against the reference sources) became Lame 2.0, and only on Lame 3.81 did we replaced of all dist10 code, making LAME no more only a patch.
The project quickly became a team project. Mike Cheng eventually left leadership and started working on tooLame, an MP2 encoder. Mark Taylor became leader and started pursuing increased quality in addition to better speed. He can be considered the initiator of the LAME project in its current form. He released version 3.0 featuring gpsycho, a new psychoacoustic model he developed.
In early 2003 Mark left project leadership, and since then the project has been lead through the cooperation of the active developers (currently 4 individuals).
Today, LAME is considered the best MP3 encoder at mid-high bitrates and at VBR, mostly thanks to the dedicated work of its developers and the open source licensing model that allowed the project to tap into engineering resources from all around the world. Both quality and speed improvements are still happening, probably making LAME the only MP3 encoder still being actively developed.<<less

Quick and Dirty Transcoder 0.1
Quick and Dirty Transcoder provides a simple shell script that adds transcoding support to Amarok using gstreamer. more>>
Quick and Dirty Transcoder provides a simple shell script that adds transcoding support to Amarok using gstreamer.
The only prerequisites are that you have gstreamer installed and the appropriate plugins.
Quick and Dirty Transcoder works with transcoding when copying files to a media player and also adds a context menu to allow you to transcode files in your collection. When doing the latter, the transcoded file will be written to the same directory as the original file.
You can configure dirtyxcode by creating a file in your home directory ~/.dirtyxcode.sh. The format of the configuration is a shell script that will be sourced by dirtyxcode. You can use this to control how dirtyxcode constructs the gstreamer pipeline. For example, to change the flacencoder element add the following:
flac_enc="myflacencoder myflacencopt=foo"
You can also add options to the existing encoders by setting
< format >_enc_options, for example to change the preset quality
setting for the mp3 encoder (lame), add the following to your
~/.dirtyxcode.sh file.
mp3_enc_options="preset=extreme"
The default gstreamer plugins used by Quick and Dirty Transcoder are:
- wav: wavenc
- mp3: lame
- ogg: vorbisenc
- m4a: faac
- aac: faac
- flac: flacenc

MP3FS 0.07
MP3FS is A read-only FUSE filesystem which transcodes audio formats (currently FLAC) to MP3 on the fly when opened and read. more>>
&MP3FS is A read-only FUSE filesystem which transcodes audio formats (currently FLAC) to MP3 on the fly when opened and read. This was written to enable me to use my FLAC collection with software and/or hardware which only understands MP3. e.g. gmediaserver to a netgear MP101 mp3 player.
MP3FS is also a novel alternative to traditional mp3 encoder applications. Just use your favorite file browser to select the files you want encoded and copy them somewhere!
How it Works:
When a file is opened, the decoder and encoder are initialised and the file metadata is read. At this time the final filesize can be determined as we only support constant bitrate mp3s.
ID3v2 tags are created from the vorbis comments in the flac file. They are located at the start of the file. As such, an application scanning a directory to read tags should not cause too much of a performance hit as the actual encoder does not need to be invoked (depending on how much data the read asks for).
A special exception to this is when an application tries to read the very last block first. Many applications do this to look for an id3v1 tag (stored in the last 128 bytes of the file). When this is detected, the filesystem simply return zeros (I dont support id3v1 tags). This dramatically speeds up applications, however it could potentially lead to corrupt mp3 files if the zeros are still in kernel cache when the application comes back to read the actual audio sequentially. In my experimentation this has not happened, I always get another read for the final block.
As the file is read, it is transcoded into an internal per-file buffer. This buffer continues to grow while the file is being read until the whole file is transcoded in memory. The memory is freed only when the file is closed. This simplifies the implementation.
Seeking within a file will cause the file to be transcoded up to the seek point (if not already done). This is not usually a problem since most programs will read a file from start to finish. Future enhancements may provide true random seeking.
For build instructions see INSTALL

xmms-crossfade 0.3.12
xmms-crossfade is an output plugin for XMMS. more>>
xmms-crossfade is an output plugin for XMMS. Its main feature is automatic crossfading. xmms-crossfade also removes the gaps between tracks, to play whole MP3 albums without any audible interruption.
xmms-crossfade supports OSS via a builtin driver, and any other platform by using existing output plugins. As of version 0.3.9, the Audacious and BMP players are also supported.
Main features:
Crossfading:
- Crossfade between two songs, i.e. fade out the end of the current song while fading in the beginning of the next for a smooth transition. Length and volume of the fadings can be adjusted separately for fading in and out.
Fadein/Fadeout:
- Smoothly fadein/fadeout at the beginning or end of playback.
Continuous output:
- Keeps the audio device opened when switching from one song to the next. When used with the Gap-Killer, this allows for seamless playback of whole albums without any audible interruption between the tracks.
Gap-Killer:
- Removes the short gaps of silence at the beginning and/or end of mp3 files. These gaps are caused by some mp3-encoders.
Automatic detection of live albums:
- Automatically detects live albums and pre-mixed tracks which already are crossfaded. For those tracks, crossfading can be disabled automatically.
High quality:
- XMMS-crossfade can take special care to avoid the clicks some soundcards produce when suddenly being stopped. Also, it can improve quality when seeking within a song.
Secondary effect plugin:
- XMMS-crossfade allows you to select a second effect plugin. This is usefull for example when using the volume normalizing plugin together with the icecast plugin.
Enhancements:
- This release adds support for audacious-1.3.0.
- There was a change in that version that broke compatibility.

PicoStreamer 2.2
PicoStreamer is a complete server for live audio/video streaming. more>>
PicoStreamer is a complete server for live audio/video streaming. It can stream MP3, AAC, and video live using Flash FLV. PicoStreamer does not require any Flash server. It only needs a Web server with Perl and PHP. It requires neither expensive dedicated servers nor compilation on the target machine.
A source client (for Win32) is included. A management/playing framework written in PHP makes PicoStreamer simple to use. The PicoIcy component acts as a local shoutcast server emulator, so you can use your preferred shoutcast source client to stream or stream Flash format directly from the Web.
Enhancements:
- Added live flash audio/video streaming support.
- Added Flash encoder.
- Added Flash player also for mp3.
- Added Brasilian (PT) language.
- Added dynamic playlist chooser.
- Added content-length managing.
- PicoIcy now in tray-bar.
- Fixed list blocking on weird chars.
- Removed php ctype_digits dependence.
- Removed perl html::entitites dependence.
- Fixed many minor bugs.
