Debian GNU/Linux 4.0r1

Debian GNU/Linux 4.0r1

Debian Operating System is an association of individuals who have made common cause to create a free operating system. more>>
Debian Operating System is an association of individuals who have made common cause to create a free operating system. This operating system is called Debian GNU/Linux, or simply Debian for short. Debian systems currently use the Linux kernel.
Linux is a completely free piece of software started by Linus Torvalds and supported by thousands of programmers worldwide. Of course, the thing that people want is application software: programs to help them get what they want to do done, from editing documents to running a business to playing games to writing more software.
Debian comes with over 8000 packages (precompiled software that is bundled up in a nice format for easy installation on your machine) - all of it free. Its a bit like a tower. At the base is the kernel. On top of that are all the basic tools.
Next is all the software that you run on the computer. At the top of the tower is Debian -- carefully organizing and fitting everything so it all works together.
Among versions of Linux, Debian is fairly unique, unlike most distributions it isnt backed by any for profit venture and instead is an all volunteer organization. There is no for profit company, or business plan behind Debian, it is a wide ranging project along the lines of GNU. Debian also provides the basis for a number of other Linux distributions, such as Lindows, Xandros, Libranet, and Knoppix.
The linchpin of Debian is a combination package management system and distribution network called forth by the mighty apt-get command. What makes this network so exceptional is that the dpkg-deb files which make up Debian packages contain information on their underlying dependencies so installing a package from the Debian network will call up all of its dependent packages.
As an example, installing a KDE application would make sure that KDE, X windows, and everything underneath was already installed on the system, and if the prerequisite packages werent already installed than the packages would automatically be downloaded and installed from the Debian network.
Enhancements:
- The Debian project has updated the stable distribution Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 (code name Etch). This update adds security updates to the stable release, together with a few corrections to serious problems. As always, the first point release also corrects a few issues that have been noticed too late in the release process to stop the release, but still should be fixed. This point release for Etch also includes an updated release of the installer, which includes the following changes: kernels used in the installer have been updated to ABI 2.6.18-5; updated mirror list; support added for certain USB CD drives that were not being detected; incorrect setup of GKSu fixed when user chooses to install with the root account disabled...

GNU Libidn 1.0

GNU Libidn 1.0

GNU Libidn is a library for preparing internationalized strings. more>>
GNU Libidn is an implementation of the Stringprep, Punycode and IDNA specifications defined by the IETF Internationalized Domain Names (IDN) working group, used for internationalized domain names. The package is available under the GNU Lesser General Public License.
The library contains a generic Stringprep implementation that does Unicode 3.2 NFKC normalization, mapping and prohibitation of characters, and bidirectional character handling. Profiles for iSCSI, Kerberos 5, Nameprep, SASL and XMPP are included. Punycode and ASCII Compatible Encoding (ACE) via IDNA are supported.
The Stringprep API consists of two main functions, one for converting data from the systems native representation into UTF-8, and one function to perform the Stringprep processing. Adding a new Stringprep profile for your application within the API is straightforward.
The Punycode API consists of one encoding function and one decoding function. The IDNA API consists of the ToASCII and ToUnicode functions, as well as an high-level interface for converting entire domain names to and from the ACE encoded form.
The GNU Libidn library is used by, e.g., GNU SASL and Shishi to process user names and passwords. Libidn can be built into GNU Libc to enable a new system-wide getaddrinfo() flag for IDN processing.
Libidn is developed for the GNU/Linux system, but runs on over 20 platforms including most major Unix platforms and Windows, and many kind of devices including iPAQ handhelds and S/390 mainframes. Libidn is written in C and (parts of) the API is accessible from C, C++, Emacs Lisp, Python and Java. An experimental native Java API is also available.
Enhancements:
- Libidn is now considered stable, and is being used in production at many sites world-wide.
- The command-line tools, examples, etc are now licensed under GPL version 3.
- Documentation, translations, and gnulib files have been updated.

GNU Common C++ 1.5.7

GNU Common C++ 1.5.7

GNU Common C++ is a C++ framework offering portable support for threading, sockets, file access, daemons, persistence. more>>
GNU Common C++ project is a C++ framework offering portable support for threading, sockets, file access, daemons, persistence, serial I/O, XML parsing, and system services, initially started by David Sugar and Daniel Silverstone.

GNU Common C++ is a GNU package and is licensed to the terms of the GNU GPL with specific privileges similar to Guile, which constitute privileges similar to the LGPL but more appropriate for a C++ class framework. GNU Common C++ offers support and portable classes for threading and sockets for both UNIX (Posix systems with "pthread" support) and the Windows "Win32" API.

GNU Common C++ uses extensive autoconf macro sets for automatic detection of various levels of "pthread compliance" in your target platform and attempts to adjust itself appropriately. GNU Common C++ has been tested from time to time with GNU/Linux, FreeBSD, Solaris, and DEC Tru64 Unix. Recent work has also been done to help support HP/UX. While GNU Common C++ is not directly related to GNU portable threading (GNU Pth), it should work with the Pth "pthread emulation" library at present. Work is planned to make GNU Common C++ directly support GNU Pth.

The primary goal of GNU Common C++ is to promote a very low overhead abstract C++ interface to common system services. Consistent with this goal, and the desire for broad portability with wide compiler support, specific aspects and practices in C++ programming were selected when writing code in this package, and other practices were discarded that seemed to detract from this goal.
