Alien 8.69

Alien 8.69

Converts between the rpm, dpkg, stampede slp, and slackware tgz file formats. more>> Alien is a program that converts between the rpm, dpkg, stampede slp, and slackware tgz file formats. If you want to use a package from another distribution than the one you have installed on your system, you can use alien to convert it to your preferred package format and install it.
Despite the large version number, alien is still (and will probably always be) rather experimental software. It has been used by many people for many years, but there are still many bugs and limitations.
Alien should not be used to replace important system packages, like sysvinit, shared libraries, or other things that are essential for the functioning of your system. Many of these packages are set up differently by Debian and Red Hat, and packages from the different distributions cannot be used interchangably. In general, if you cant uninstall the package without breaking your system, dont try to replace it with an alien version.
Alien is available as the alien package in Debian. To use alien, you will need several other programs. Alien is a perl program, and requires perl version 5.004 or greater. To convert packages to or from rpms, you need the Red Hat Package Manager; get it from its website.

man-pages 2.63

man-pages 2.63

The manpages package contains a large collection of man pages for Linux covering programming APIs, file formats, protocols, etc. more>>
Linux documentation can be found in man pages, info files, HOWTOs and FAQs, and elsewhere. (For example, also the kernel Documentation directory contains a lot of good stuff.) A nice index for the man pages in Fedora Core 2 is found at the superman site.

Man pages belonging to programs are usually distributed together with those programs. Therefore, the Linux man-pages distribution mainly contains the pages for system calls and library routines, special devices, and file formats.

However, it also contains documentation for a number of programs, in cases where the authors or maintainers of the program do not distribute man pages themselves.

Image::PBMlib 1.05

Image::PBMlib 1.05

Image::PBMlib Perl module contains helper functions for PBM/PGM/PPM image file formats. more>>
Image::PBMlib Perl module contains helper functions for PBM/PGM/PPM image file formats.

SYNOPSIS

use Image::PBMlib;

... open(PPM, "< image.ppm")...

my $ref = readppmheader(*PPM);

my @pixels = readpixels_raw(*PPM, $$ref{type},
($$ref{width} * $$ref{height}) );

my @pixels = readpixels_dec(*PPM, $$ref{type},
($$ref{width} * $$ref{height}) );

my @rgb = hextriplettoraw("F00BA4");

my @rgb = dectriplettoraw("17:34:51");

my $header = makeppmheader($ref);

This is primarily a library for reading portable bitmap (PBM), portable graymap (PGM), and portable pixmap (PPM) files. These image formats are only the barest step up from raw data, and have a very simple format which is the key to be "portable". Writing out images in these formats is very easy.

Reading images in these formats is also easy, but not quite "very easy". Proper reading of the file needs to happen one byte at a time, since there is no fixed header length. Headers can also contain comments, which must be ignored. Then, once past the header, there are a total of six different ways that the data might need to be read: a raw and an ascii encoding of each image color level.

File::Comments 0.07

File::Comments 0.07

File::Comments is a Perl module that ecognizes file formats and extracts format-specific comments. more>>
File::Comments is a Perl module that ecognizes file formats and extracts format-specific comments.

SYNOPSIS

use File::Comments;

my $snoop = File::Comments->new();

# *----------------
# | program.c:
# | /* comment */
# | main () {}
# *----------------
my $comments = $snoop->comments("program.c");
# => [" comment "]

# *----------------
# | script.pl:
# | # comment
# | print "howdy!n"; # another comment
# *----------------
my $comments = $snoop->comments("script.pl");
# => [" comment", " another comment"]

# or strip comments from a file:
my $stripped = $snoop->stripped("script.pl");
# => "print "howdy!n";"

# or just guess a files type:
my $type = $snoop->guess_type("program.c");
# => "c"

File::Comments guesses the type of a given file, determines the format used for comments, extracts all comments, and returns them as a reference to an array of chunks. Alternatively, it strips all comments from a file.

Currently supported are Perl scripts, C/C++ programs, Java, makefiles, JavaScript, Python and PHP.

The plugin architecture used by File::Comments makes it easy to add new formats. To support a new format, a new plugin module has to be installed. No modifications to the File::Comments codebase are necessary, new plugins will be picked up automatically.

File::Comments can also be used to simply guess a files type. It it somewhat more flexible than File::MMagic and File::Type. File types in File::Comments are typically based on file name suffixes (*.c, *.pl, etc.). If no suffix is available, or a given suffix is ambiguous (e.g. if several plugins have registered a handler for the same suffix), then the files content is used to narrow down the possibilities and arrive at a decision.

WARNING: THIS MODULE IS UNDER DEVELOPMENT, QUALITY IS ALPHA. IF YOU FIND BUGS, OR WANT TO CONTRIBUTE PLUGINS, PLEASE SEND THEM MY WAY.
