BMPx 0.40.1

BMPx 0.40.1

BMPx is a media player based on the XMMS music playing application. more>>
BMPx is a media player based on the XMMS multimedia player software. Its primary goals are usability and usage of current desktop standards.
BMPx is the codename for the next-generation BMP. It will not differ very much from the current BMP, except that the code has been rewritten 95% from scratch, including the skinning engine and the playback backend (a few utility functions and miscellaneous stuff has been taken from the old codebase).
Main features:
Support for multiple playlists
- BMPx can keep several playlists at the same time loaded, and you can switch between them at any time and play songs from them.
GUI-Less player
- BMPx is actually a gui-less player. It can function completely without GUI and is as such a fully functional audio player with the same capabilities that the UI provides (in other words, the UI doesnt provide any capabilities that the core player doesnt have). However, it currently uses a Winamp2.x-skin compatible skinning engine (rewritten from scratch, not based on the XMMS engine), which is not a seperate process communicating via DBus, but compiled in. Our reasoning for this is that we dont want to be faceless, a main GUI should always be readily available. Just so you get an idea what is meant by GUI-less: It would take maybe 15 minutes with VI to create a fully building and working BMPx source tree without the GUI, which you could then control through DBus.
Daemonized running and DBus control
- BMPx can, as already stated above, run as a daemon process, in which the UI is not initialized at all. Its not simply hidden, its just not initialized, so there are also no resources being wasted. The core player code is 100% UI-independent. When running in daemon mode, no "helper" UI subsystems need to be initialized for the player to run.
- The player can be controlled through DBus in a very fine grained manner which goes far beyond what was possible in BMP (or XMMS for that matter). Basically, it allows to run BMPx as a playback backend and attach a different GUI trough DBus to it. This is comparable to MPD (http://www.musicpd.org/).
Metadata cache/Media library
- BMPx has a metadata caching system that will cache the metadata for files that have been at least once added to a playlist. Optionally you can pre-load the metadata cache with a path on the filesystem (recursively). By doing this, you basically turn the cache into a media library, and BMPx does provide facilities to use the cache as a library.
- Never the less, this system is more of a metadata cache rather than a media library, and hence control over it isnt as fine-grained as in e.g. Rhythmbox or iTunes, where you can dedicatedly add or remove paths to/from the library. But despite of this fact it is very usable and the current UI that allows you to access the cache as a library is very effective.

Subsonic 3.1

Subsonic 3.1

Subsonic is a Web-based media streamer. more>>
Subsonic is a free, web-based media streamer. Although primarily designed for MP3, it works for any audio or video format that can stream over HTTP (for instance WMA and OGG).
With Subsonic you have access to your entire music collection wherever you are. Use Subsonic application to share your music with friends, or to listen to your own music while at work. You can stream to multiple players simultaneously, for instance to one player in your kitchen and another in your living room.
Subsonic is designed to handle very large music collections (many thousand albums). It uses a combination of directory structure and tag parsing to organize the music.
If you have constrained bandwidth, you may set an upper limit for the bitrate of the music streams. Subsonic will then automatically resample the music to a suitable bitrate. (Supported for MP3 only).
In addition to being a streaming media server, Subsonic works very well as a local jukebox. The intuitive web interface, as well as search and index facilities, are optimized for efficient browsing through large media libraries.
Subsonic is free software distributed under the LGPL open-source licence.
Main features:
- Supports MP3, OGG, AAC, WMA and any other music or video format that can be streamed over HTTP.
- Works with any network-enabled media player, such as Winamp, iTunes, XMMS, MusicMatch and Windows Media Player.
- Displays cover art, dynamically scaling it to fit nicely on the screen.
- Finds cover art and album info using Amazon Web Services.
- On-the-fly resampling to lower bitrates using the high-quality LAME encoder (MP3 only).
- Common playlist features (add, remove, rearrange, repeat, shuffle, undo).
- Playlists can be saved and restored. Both M3U and PLS formats are supported.
- Configurable index.
- Google-like search functionality.
- Automatic update of search index at specified intervals.
- Supports multiple simultaneous players. The playlist for any player can be managed from any location.
- Secure. Users must log in using a username and password.
- Lean web interface optimized for constrained bandwidth environments and efficient browsing through large music collections.
- WAP interface allows you to control Subsonic from any mobile phone or PDA.
- In addition to streaming, single files or entire directories may be downloaded from Subsonic.
- Files can be uploaded to Subsonic. Zip-files can be automatically unpacked.
- Implements the SHOUTcast protocol. Players which support this (including Winamp, iTunes and XMMS) will display the current artist and song name.
- Provides links to album reviews and more at allmusic.com.
- Supports internationalization. Currently, English and Norwegian translations are provided.
Enhancements:
- New: Optimized scanning of music folders. Dramatic improvement for network disks.

GeeXboX 1.1

GeeXboX 1.1

GeeXboX is a GNU/Linux standalone media player system. more>>
The GeeXboX is no more than an awesome standalone media player. Why such a name ? Well, its main purpose is to play DivX movies and, as everybody usually call this kind of projects DivX boxes, well just prepended a "GeeX", cause thats for the geeks you all are.
GeeXboX is a full operating system, livecd that can run on any machine and it is based on the excellent MPlayer. No need for a hard drive, you just have to put the GeeXboX bootable CD into the CD-Drive of any Pentium-class computer to boot it. Moreover, GeeXboX is free software, created as open-source software. This means that everyone can modify it and build his own release of the GeeXboX.
You may wonder why you should have to boot another operating system to play your media files, but just think about the Mini-ITX platforms like VIA Epia/Eden or Shuttle barebones. Its now affordable to bring DivX to your home cinema, plugging this kind of computer directly to your TV !!
At the time of the first development releases (Dec. 2002), it was only capable of playing DivX movies, but now, nearly every kind of media file can be played with GeeXboX, with the OS supporting :
- MPEG 1/2 movies (MPG files, VCDs, DVDs ...)
- MPEG 4 movies (DivX, XviD ...)
- RealMedia and Windows Media movies.
- OggMedia streams
- Matroska streams
- Audio streams like : MP3, Ogg/Vorbis, WAV (AudioCD), AC3 ...
GeeXboX is an operating system but you still need something to boot on ;-) Youre lucky, GeeXboX is based on MPlayer, which can be considered as one of the less cpu-dependent movie players, thanks to the use of FFMpeg for decoding movies.
System requirements:
- Pentium-Class CPU or above (P2-400 should be quite enough)
- a VESA 2.0 compliant graphics card.
- an ALSA compatible sound card.
- at least 64 MB of RAM
- CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive
- Motherboard which supports booting on CD-ROM (should be ok for everyone
- Keyboard, Joystick or Remote Controller, using a Lirc-compatible IR (InfraRed) receiver (check http://www.lirc.org to build yours), e.g. Miro PcTVs one or ATI Remote Wonder.
Enhancements:
- GeeXboX 1.1. Although development never stopped, more than a year has passed without any new official GeeXboX release. This new one is a really good candidate for your HTPC multimedia distribution choice. It comes with an improved hardware support, providing dozens of new drivers (a lot of new WiFi controllers, DVB card chipsets and new remote controls). It also comes with a massively upgraded and more stable MPlayer, which features native decoding of various audio and video formats that used to be available through non-free Win32 DLLs only. Also, GeeXboX now has some decoding speed improvements and the OSD menu has been completely rewritten to provide a lot of new attractive features.
