flac2mp3 project is a tool to convert audio files from flac to mp3 format.

EasyTAG is an utility for viewing and editing tags for MP3, MP2, FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, MusePack and Monkeys Audio files. EasyTAG is simple and nice GTK+ interface makes tagging easier under GNU/Linux.
The program exists for the both versions of the GTK library 1.2 and 2.4.
The GTK 1.2 version wouldnt change a lot (may be some bugs fixes), as all new developments will be concentrated on the new GTK 2.4 version.
Main features:
- View, edit, write tags of MP3, MP2 files (ID3 tag with pictures), FLAC files (FLAC Vorbis tag), Ogg Vorbis files (Ogg Vorbis tag), and MusePack, Monkeys Audio files (APE tag),

Enhancements:
- This release adds autoscroll in log view and the ability to change the modification time of the parent directory of a file when updating a tag (which is useful with Amarok).
- A problem with displaying the title in the cddb window and a mistake in the configure script were fixed.
- Swedish documentation was added.
- The French, German, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, and Swedish translations were updated.

RipIT is used to create MPEG-1 Layer 3 (mp3), Flac (flac) or Ogg Vorbis (ogg) audio files from an audio CD and from version 3.4 also faac (m4a). RipIT is a console based front-end (no fancy GUI here), written in perl, for these excellent programs:
- dagrab, cdparanoia or cdda2wav (tosha and cdd are also supported) for ripping the audio CD tracks (I dont know if dagrab is still up to date..., but its COOL!)
- Lame, OggVorbis, Flac or Faac for encoding the wav files to mp3, ogg, flac or m4a (find some info and links)
- CDDB_get (perl module) for CDDB retrieval (info and links).
Main features:
- Gets the Audio CD Album/Artist/Tracks information from CDDB
- Rips the Audio CD Tracks
- Encodes to flac, mp3 or ogg
- id3 tags encoded songs
- Creates an playlist (m3u) file
- Can prepare and send a CDDB submission.
Enhancements:
- Some minor bugs were fixed.
- The following options have been introduced: merge, resume, md5sum (to create MD5-sum files for each type of sound file), core (to allow several encoding processes on each machine), fpermission and dpermission (to set directory and file permissions), ghost (an experimental feature to split wavs with silence into chunks of sound), prepend and extend (to enlarge chunks of sound when split with the ghost option), and ejectcmd and ejectopt.

MP3val is a tool for MPEG audio files validation and (optionally) fixing problems.
It was primarily designed for MPEG 1 Layer III (MP3) files, but supports also other MPEG versions and layers.
MP3val can be useful for finding corrupted files (e.g. incompletely downloaded).
MP3val supports:
- MPEG-1, 2, 2.5; Layers I, II, III
- ID3v1 tags (must be at the very end of the file)
- ID3v2 tags (must be at the very beginning of the file)
- APEv2 tags
Enhancements:
- More precise report about CRC.
- A new option added to keep file timestamps.
- Added more accurate handling of write errors (Debian #413946).
- Attributes are now correctly preserved.

FFpocket is a tool for using ffmpegs features. FFpocket carries out the tasks of frame decoding from a video file, audio decoding from a multimedia file (video/audio) precise time/frame seeking including b-frames, audio downsampling and special minmax averaging.
The source code is intented to be simple, human-readable and free of memory leaks. It can be used as a shared library by larger projects that want to incorporate multimedia features.
Main features:
- Frame decoding for a video file
- Audio decoding for a multimedia file (video/audio)
- Precise frame/time seeking in the multimedia files (including b-frames)
- Audio downsampling and special minmax averaging, refered to as caching
Enhancements:
- This release adds preliminary Windows Vista support and a newer ffmpeg backend.
- Bugfixes include handling A/V time delay, better memory handling, and better exception handling for unsupported media files.

Media Tag Tools is as the name suggests a collection of tools to help you tag your audio files.
Rename them using the data present in their tags and/or categorise the files in folders automatically.
Installation:
You need the following packages to be able to compile mediatagtools: qt3 and taglib-1.4
If you have installed precompiled packages of these two libs, be sure to check if you have
also installed the -dev packages too.
Now unpack the archive and then inside the directory that was created the following commands (without the #):
# qmake
# make
and optionally if you want the program installed in /usr/local/bin:
# INSTALL_ROOT=/usr/local/ make install
Set INSTALL_ROOT to where you want to install the file. make install will then create a folder named bin and in there it will copy the program.

Audio collection script is a script which can help you manage collections of audio files. For example, I have a directory with all my audio files in it, sorted by band/album. I also have an audio collections directory. Within that directory I have a few list files which contain patterns for songs that should be part of that collection. The script generates or updates a subdirectory for each list file present and creates links within those directories to all music files from my main audio directory that match the patterns in the list file.

An example:

Your music files are in /audio
Your collections are in /audio-collections
The file /audio-collections/funny.list has the following lines:

/audio-collections/funny/
#the next line matches all songs within a tripod directory
tripod/
monty*python
kevin*bloody*wilson
bill*clinton*miss*lewinsky*and*i

When run, it will process each .list file in the current directory. So for this example, when run from /audio-collections, it will create or clean out the directory /audio-collections/funny and create links inside it for any files found within /audio which match the specified patterns.

The first line in each list file specifies the directory to create and use for the links. The patterns in the file will match on the full path of a song.

Note: I am pretty sure it would not be a good path to put your collections inside your main audio directory.
