Linux Mint 3.0 (KDE Edition)

Linux Mint 3.0 (KDE Edition)

Linux Mints purpose is to produce an elegant, up to date and comfortable GNU/Linux desktop distribution. more>>
Linux Mints purpose is to produce an elegant, up to date and comfortable GNU/Linux desktop distribution.
Is Linux Mint suitable for companies?
Yes. Linux Mint offers paid commercial support to companies and individuals. Free community support is also available from the forums and the IRC channel. The main purpose of Linux Mint is to innovate and constantly bring the best desktop solutions to its users. For this reason, the release cycle is fast and a new version of Linux Mint can be released every month or every two months. All released versions of Linux Mint are actively supported and some of the releases (possibly Bianca or Cassandra) will come with a Long Term Support guarantee (a guarantee that our Support Center will support these releases for the years to come).
Is Linux Mint suitable for individuals?
Yes, definitely. We believe Linux is the best operating system on the market. There are more than 300 active Linux distributions and were working hard at becoming the best alternative for your desktop. This is a tough competition as there are other great desktop operating systems and distributions out there. We have faith in the quality of our desktop and a lot of great ideas. If your computer is a PC and you have more than 512MB RAM you should try Linux Mint and see what you think about it. If youre running a 5 years old non-free operating system such as Microsoft Windows XP you should definitely be impressed. We like hearing about your experience and taking your suggestions onboard so please give us your feedback.
Why is there a Light Edition and a Full Edition?
Linux Mint respects the GPL and it also respects the copyrights and licenses of the proprietary software it distributes. However it uses technologies that have been patented in some parts of the World. Most countries do not recognize the legitimacy of software patents so for most of our users this is not a problem. But if youre unlucky and you live in a country where software patents are legally enforcable, you need a version of Linux Mint which is free of patented technologies, and this is what the Light Edition is about.
Why does Linux Mint include proprietary drivers?
It doesnt. If it did, it would be legally wrong (because it would violate the GPL) or ethically wrong (if some dirty trick was used for the user to link the code to the kernel for instance).
What about proprietary software?
We believe in open source and release all our work with the corresponding source code. We owe a lot to the Free Software movement and to the GPL but we also owe a lot to all the developers who contributed ideas and tools and who made software better and better throughout the years. Some of them released their source code as well and thus granted us more freedom and more flexibility. Others released their software with proprietary licenses and although this didnt give us the freedom we would have liked it still contributed to make software better. We like Software in general, Free Software even more, but we do not believe in boycotting Proprietary Software.
Enhancements:
- The KDE Community Edition of Cassandra is finally out! This release is based on Bianca KDE and compatible with all Feisty repositories. It comes with KDE 3.5.6 and a Linux kernel 2.6.20. Openoffice, Thunderbird and Sunbird replaced KOffice and Kontact. Beryl 0.2.1 is included with Beryl-Manager. The default software selection includes: Dolphin 0.8.1, Tasty Menu 0.8.2, Amarok 1.4.6, K3B 1.0, Scribus 1.2.5, KMyMoney 0.8.5, Sun Java 6, Digikam, GIMP.... This desktop-ready KDE Mint has all the usual Minty goodness for the web and media applications. I have made the choice to make the Mint KDE Community edition more pro-desktop and to mirror the main edition closer with respect to the main applications.

wavbreaker 0.8.1

wavbreaker 0.8.1

wavbreaker is a tool to split a wave file up into multiple waves. more>>
wavbreaker is a tool to split a wave file up into multiple waves.

This applications purpose in life is to take a wave file and break it up into multiple wave files. It makes a clean break at the correct position to burn the files to an audio cd without any dead air between the tracks. It will only read wave files, so use an appropriate tool to convert ogg, mp3, etc. files and then break them up.

The gui displays a summary of the entire wave file being worked on at the top. The middle portion displays a zoomed in view that allows you to select where to start playing the track and where it will make the break when the break button is clicked. When a break is made, another entry will be added to the bottom portion of the display. This is where you may change file names and select/unselect tracks that will be written when you click save.

There is also a command line tool to merge wave files together, wavmerge. So, if you download a show and dont like how it was tracked, you can merge them together with wavmerge and then break them back up with wavbreaker. This tool will only work on files that are alike. For example, 44100 khz sample rate, 16-bit sample size, etc. I would suggest a tool named sox to do any conversion you may need.

Lattice point Enumeration 1.2-mk-0.8.1 (Macchiato)

Lattice point Enumeration 1.2-mk-0.8.1 (Macchiato)

Lattice point Enumeration is a computer software dedicated to the problems of counting and detecting lattice points. more>>
Lattice point Enumeration is a computer software dedicated to the problems of counting and detecting lattice points inside convex polytopes, and the solution of integer programs. It contains an implementation of Barvinoks algorithm.
Main features:
- Using GNU Autoconf and Automake, it easily builds and runs on a variety of UNIX systems, rather than just on GNU/Linux on the x86 architecture.
- Various micro-optimizations and code clean-ups make the code more robust and about 25% faster than LattE.
- New algorithms are implemented:
- Primal irrational decomposition
- All-primal irrational decomposition
- Exponential substitution
- Non-unimodular enumeration
A combination of these new algorithms is much faster (for some examples, by several orders of magnitude) than the traditional algorithms implemented in LattE.
Enhancements:
- A build problem on Solaris/SPARC using GCC 4.2.0 was fixed.

Enigform 0.8.1

Enigform 0.8.1

Enigform is a Mozilla Firefox extension that provides you the ability to digitally sign HTTP GET and POST requests. more>>
Enigform is a Mozilla Firefox extension that provides you the ability to digitally sign HTTP GET and POST requests, even those generated via AJAX calls. The project implements the mechanism described in the white paper entitled OpenPGP based Identity and Data Authentication for HTTP POST payload by Arturo Buanzo Busleiman. Okay, me.
This extension is focused on adding an extra layer of security to the payload of HTTP POST requests. There is also a great extension called Enigmail that enhances Mozilla Thunderbird with PGP capabilities. You can check out Enigmail at its Mozdev Page.
For years different methods for User Authentication and Session Management have been implemented:
- HTTP Authentication
- Cookies
- GET/POST values
- SSL Certificates
- A combination of all the above.
Regarding SMTP, e-mail has been digitally signed for a long time now, and it is a standard. Extending its usage to the HTTP protocol sounded like a natural idea, specially at 3am when I woke up with a OpenPGP-signed HTTP POST request in my head.
By having the GET query string and the POST payload ("variable=test") signed using an ASCII armored, Clearsign, OpenPGP based procedure, the browsing user can provide Identity and Data Authentication to that payload, thus adding all OpenPGP benefits to the HTTP protocol.
This allows web developers to add a new layer of security to their applications, and if correctly implemented will render man in the middle attacks useless. The direct benefit of implementing this extension is that web developers will be able to verify the payloads signature, potentially avoiding obscure session management, and/or complicated login procedures.
For example, Highly Secure Home Banking sites could be created by using Enigform + some simple server side code.
