ToscanaJ 1.6

ToscanaJ 1.6

ToscanaJ is a Java reimplementation of the classic Formal Concept Analysis frontend Toscana. more>>
ToscanaJ is a Java reimplementation of the classic Formal Concept Analysis frontend Toscana. It was built using software development techniques like MVC architecture and XML based files to provide more flexibilty for implementation of new features.

Since ToscanaJ is a pure viewer/browser for conceptual schemas and optimized for a non-technical audience, it comes with additional tools for creating the data displayed and to offer additional, more technical analysis capabilities. The four main tools are:

ToscanaJ

The viewer/browser component

Elba

An editor for conceptual schemas on relational databases. Database-aware and offering extra tools like exporting SQL scripts.

Siena

In many ways similar to Elba (mostly thanks to shared code), Siena edits conceptual schemas that store their data in memory.

Lucca

An experimental editor that is supposed to make use out of implication analysis of SQL clauses to allow very explorative and intuitive creation of database-connected systems.

With the 1.0 release ToscanaJ and Elba have reached a feature set that allows using them in concrete applications. This is a very important milestone for the project, since we expect to get a user base and thereby a lot of feedback about our work. If you use ToscanaJ and its editors, please feel free to mail any comment to the developer mailing list, we are always happy to hear about your experiences -- good or bad.

Siena and Lucca are not as advanced, although Siena is already used in some research environments. We expect Siena to be an official part of the releases quite soon, while Lucca is very experimental and might never be an official product.

Please note that DSTC can offer you professional services and aimed development around the project and that both universities maintain research activities in this area. If you are looking for support in your commercial or research activities, please feel free to ask the developer mailing list, we will be happy to give you advice how your ideas fit into the project.

newsx 1.6

newsx 1.6

Newsx is an NNTP client for Unix. more>>
Newsx is an NNTP client for Unix. It connects to remote NNTP servers and receives incoming and outgoing articles
Newsx is also well suited for large spools with normal feeds, being used for pulling newsgroups from specific NNTP servers that are not distributed in the usual manner. Since newsx obeys the normal news spool configuration file and requires little or no specific configuration, the administrative burden should be minimized.
Main features:
- compatible with C News and INN local news servers
- configuration relies on standard C News and INN mechanisms for setting up newsservers and newsgroups
- setting of which newsgroups will be exchanged with which remote server based on sys or newsfeeds files, making administration easy
- logging of errors that occurred, as well as article transfer statistics
- optional log file for actual articles posted, and collection of posted articles in folders
- has been designed to be nice, so as not to overload the remote news server
- uses only standard RFC-977 functions, so should be compatible with the vast majority of news servers
- comprehensive error recovery for posting as well as for fetching; failed postings will be retried at the next opportunity, while fetching will resume at the point where it stopped
- refers to news history database to prevent fetching of articles already in the local spool. will not fetch crossposted articles more than once. does not rely on Xref, since many sites does not provide it.
- interface to popular news filters like Cleanfeed
Pulling news
News transfer via fetching to local news spools is sometimes claimed to be an inefficient way of transferring news compared to connecting newsreaders directly to the remote NNTP server.
The fact of the matter is that if set up and used correctly, exactly the opposite is the case.
A local news spool allows news transfer to occur at off-peak hours, thereby decreasing the host server load in the critical period. This will tie up less modems at peak hours, as well as decreasing the connect time since the actual transfer will run much quicker.
A fetch based system is also easier to administrate then the feeding kind, since every site decides for itself what groups it will exchange with whom. The major down-side is that article propagation times will be longer. For sites that are leafs in the news distribution tree, this is usually not very important.
Much of the problems connected with news pulling is connected to the use of the RFC-977 NEWNEWS command. Most news servers has implemented this command in an inefficient manner, which will put severe loads on the newsserver. Newsx does not use NEWNEWS.

Neko 1.6.0

Neko 1.6.0

Neko is an interpreter and programming language. more>>
Neko is an interpreter and programming language. It has been designed to provide a common runtime for several different languages.
Learning and using Neko is very easy, but youre not supposed to directly program in Neko. Instead, you can write a generator from your preferred language to Neko and then use the Neko runtime to compile, run, and access libraries.
eko is a good way for language designers to focus on design and reuse a fast and well-designed runtime, as well as existing libraries for accessing filesystem, network, databases, xml...
Neko language syntax have been created with "easy to parse" and "easy to generate" in mind. It is not especially designed to be written by a programmer but more to be generated from a higher level language.
For example one could write easily a PHP-to-Neko or a Java-to-Neko that would generate equivalent code but using Neko syntax and semantics instead of PHP or Java ones.
In particular, there are not multiple levels of expression, as in C. Every statement is also an expression, and thus enable some constructs that are not possible in other languages (for example : return if(x) { ... } else { ... }). This make the generation to Neko from functional languages more easy.
he syntax is parsed using a left-to-right LL(1) parser. That means that after reading a token we have enough information to know which expresion it will produce. This enable very lightweight parser which is easy to improve without creating ambiguities.
Enhancements:
- A bug was fixed in JIT.
- Performance was improved.
- UI and process IO APIs were added.

Scriptorium 1.6

Scriptorium 1.6

Scriptorium is a Web-based code library. more>>
Scriptorium is a web-based code library. Its for programmers who need to organize, share, and archive the code theyve written, regardless of what language or format that code is in.
For example, lets say youve just written a great function for your latest project that you just know youll want to reuse in the future. Depending on how much time goes by, you might not remember exactly where the function is, or whether it even exists.
With Scriptorium, you create a personal repository for your code. Everything worth remembering is kept in one place.
Scriptorium is not a source control system, not by any stretch of the imagination. If youre interested in the evolving history of a piece of code and want to track every single little change, you should look at Subversion or CVS.
Using Scriptorium involves copying and pasting your code into a web-based form for storage in a database, or uploading a file for storage on the filesystem. There is no check-in or check-out mechanism.
Enhancements:
- Localization support was added, including French and Dutch language translations.
- The ability to attach comments to your snippets was added.
- A new syntax highlighting engine was added.
- The usual interface improvements and bugfixes were done.

KChart 1.6.1

KChart 1.6.1

KChart is the KOffice chart drawing application. more>>
KChart is the KOffice chart drawing application part of the KOffice suite. Use it to embed charts into your KOffice documents, e.g. a report written with KWord or a slideshow made with KPresenter.
Main features:
Easy to Use:
- default values for all parameters
- automatic ordinate axis computation based on highest/lowest data value
- default sizes (fonts, line widths...) relative to the window size
Highly Configurable:
- All of the parameters may be changed after configuring/drawing the chart.
- Size values (axis/grid line width, font sizes, bar width, dataset gap, pie chart radius ... ) may be specified in either absolute pixels or relative to the window size. This makes your chart layout-independent since such values are being recalculated automatically when the window dimensions have changed.
Flexible Layout:
- Legends may be centered at a chart edge or in a corner with the chart making way in vertical and/or in horizontal direction thus offering 16 legend/chart relationships to choose from
- Header and footer texts have special font type/size and color settings
Axes and Data:
- Automatical ordinate axis computation based on highest/lowest data value which can be easily replaced by programmer-defined start, end and delta value settings.
- Abscissa labels may be taken either from data cells containing the respective strings or from programmer-defined QStringLists or calculated automatically based on a format chosen by the user and values found in the cells
- Up to 8 axes: 2 left, 2 right, 2 top, 2 bottom
- A chart may have 2 different ordinates: e.g. left axis for series 1,2,3 right axis for data series 4
- Each axis may draw (sub-)grid lines using their own color, line width, style
Chart Combinations:
- sharing the same abscissa axis or using different ones (e.g Top and Bottom axis)
- sharing the same ordinate or using different ones (e.g Left and Right axis)
- Axes may use the same line color / line width as the bars (or the lines, resp.) which they belong to.
Chart Types:
- Bar: normal | stacked | percent, 2D | 3D-Look
- Line: normal | stacked | percent, 2D | 3D-Look, show marker: circle | square | diamond
- Area: normal | stacked | percent
- HiLo: normal | open-close
- Pie: normal | exploded | some exploded, 2D | 3D
- Ring: normal | exploded | some exploded, fixed thickness | relative thickness
- Polar: normal | stacked | percent

Videotrans 1.6.0

Videotrans 1.6.0

Videotrans is a set of scripts that convert a movie file in any format that mplayer understands to a DVD-compatible VOB file. more>>
Videotrans is a set of scripts that convert a movie file in any format that mplayer understands to a DVD-compatible VOB file, doing all the necessary conversions automatically. Videotrans provides an automatic DVD menu generator.
Videotrans has the following programs available:
movie-to-dvd
The movie-to-dvd program takes one or more input files and converts them into a separate MPEG2 video stream and a separate MP2 or AC3 audio stream.
This program takes care of all the necessary conversions, such as framerate adjustment, audio adjustment, zooming/shrinking for DVD frame sizes, etcetera. The program can determine which conversions are necessary on its own, no user intervention is required (but of course, it is possible).
When making a DVD, youll first convert all the movies that you want to put on the DVD into the MPEG2 video and MP2 or AC3 audio streams. Later, youll combine these with the movie-title program into a complete DVD.
movie-title
The movie-title program takes one or more video files that were converted by the movie-to-dvd program and a special title sequence that was produced by movie-make-title and combines all of these into a menu from which the viewer of the DVD can choose which movie he or she wants to watch.
The menu is created by displaying the title sequence in the background, with animated picture-in-picture versions of all the movies on top of that. The creator has the option of supplying information about the movies. This information can be viewed from the menu as well, on a movie-per-movie basis.
The program also generates an XML file for use with dvdauthor, the program that is used to actually create the DVD image that you will burn onto a DVD disc. The program tells you how to run dvdauthor to do the processing for you.
movie-make-title
The movie-make-title program is used to create a background movie and an audio track for DVD menus.
The movie-make-title program takes a single movie and cuts a specified part of out it. It then converts this piece of the movie into separate frames and saves the audio track in a WAV file for you.
Youll have to manually view all the frames and throw away those that you do not want in the title sequence of your DVD (the first few frames and the last few frames). Its not possible to automatically cut out the piece of the movie that you want exactly. I recommend xv for this purpose, although any image viewer that understands JPEG picture files will do.
Also, youll have to process the WAV audio file by hand, to cut out exactly that audio track that you want to hear when the menu is displayed. The movie-title program will make sure that the audio track lasts exactly as long as the movie part that you cut out does. This is to compensate for possible changes in the video frame rate and to correct small mistakes. I personally find sweep a very useful graphical audio processor for this purpose. Sweep can be downloaded at http://sweep.sourceforge.net/.
movie-rip-tv.com
The movie-rip-tv.com program is a convenience program that I personally use to gather interesting information about TV series. Given the name of a series (such as Star Trek Enterprise), a season number and an episode number, this program will create an information file in the correct format for use with the movie-title program. The movie-title program will then be able to display the episodes name in the menu and provide an information button which leads to the generated information (such as the director, the guest stars list, the description of the particular episode, etcetera).
movie-compare-dvd
The movie-compare-dvd program can be used after burning a DVD image to a DVD disc to verify whether all the data was written onto the disc intact. The program takes the on-filesytem copy and the on-DVD copy and compares the checksums of the files on both to find any differences.
Usage:
If you want to start quickly with these programs, and you have a couple of movies that you want to put onto a DVD, try this (assuming that your TV standard is PAL, otherwise specify ntsc instead of pal everywhere that its used):
movie-to-dvd -m pal movie1.avi movie2.avi movie3.avi
movie-make-title -o title -m pal -s 0 -e 60 -m pal movie1.avi
movie-title -o title.vob -t title movie1.m2v movie2.m2v movie3.m2v
dvdauthor -o dvd_directory -x title.vob-dvdauthor.xml
a_command_to_burn_a_dvd_from dvd_directory
In case you dont want a selection menu, you may also try:
movie-to-dvd -m pal -M movie1.avi movie2.avi movie3.avi
dvdauthor -o dvd_directory movie1.vob
dvdauthor -o dvd_directory movie2.vob
dvdauthor -o dvd_directory movie3.vob
dvdauthor -o dvd_directory -T
a_command_to_burn_a_dvd_from dvd_directory
In this case, youll have to use the DVD players navigation controls to get to the various movies on the DVD.
Enhancements:
- All sorts of clean-up was done.
- Some long-waiting feature requests have been implemented.
- In general, the program should work on more systems now.

Oddcast 3.1.6

Oddcast 3.1.6

Oddcast is an Icecast and Shoutcast streamer. more>>
Oddcast is an Icecast and Shoutcast streamer.
This version of oddcastv3 allows you to hook into any jack output port and broadcast the audio to an icecast or shoutcast server.
This version of oddcastv3 is all command-line oriented, and comes with example config files for each of the encoding types supported (Ogg Vorbis, LAME, AAC). You will most likely need to take one of the example configs (in the conf dir) and modify it to suit your needs.
Here is an example of how to use it with jack.
Step 1:
- startup jackd
Step 2:
- Feed a signal into jackd. There are many applications you can use
for this, if you like XMMS, try installing http://xmms-jack.sourceforge.net/
Step 3:
- Start oddcastv3 specifying the appropriate output ports. To get a list of
the output ports, use jack_lsp. If you use XMMS, youll see something like :
% jack_lsp
alsa_pcm:capture_1
alsa_pcm:capture_2
alsa_pcm:playback_1
alsa_pcm:playback_2
bio2jack_0_32083:out_0
bio2jack_0_32083:out_1
In this case, the bio2jack_0_32083:out_0 and bio2jack_0_32083:out_1 are the output ports from XMMS. So youd start oddcastv3 like :
oddcastv3 -c oddcast_OggVorbis.cfg bio2jack_0_32083:out_0 bio2jack_0_32083:out_1
Use oddcastv3 -h for a usage.
Enhancements:
- Added support for oggFLAC streaming. A note about this, currently as the release of this plugin, there are very very few clients that actually support oggFLAC streaming.
- Installing those filters will allow you to play oggFLAC streams from within Windows Media Player. Currently Winamp and Foobar2k do NOT work.
- Hopefully this will change in the future. Also, streaming oggFLAC is really only good for LAN streaming as it is lossless and very high bitrate. There is currently no way to "configure" any oggFLAC options. Also, you need to use the latest Icecast (2.3.0) in order to support oggFLAC streaming.
