MP3 Streaming DownSampler for PHP is written with cable modem/DSL users with low upstream caps in mind. Using LAME, it dynamically downsamples a requested MP3 to a bitrate which can be streamed.

It doesnt use temporary files, so you dont have to take the time to do any batching, and you just give it a directory with symlinks to your music in a place the Web server can reach. The interface is simplistic and fast, meant for immediate plug and play access.

PicoStreamer is a complete server for live audio/video streaming. It can stream MP3, AAC, and video live using Flash FLV. PicoStreamer does not require any Flash server. It only needs a Web server with Perl and PHP. It requires neither expensive dedicated servers nor compilation on the target machine.
A source client (for Win32) is included. A management/playing framework written in PHP makes PicoStreamer simple to use. The PicoIcy component acts as a local shoutcast server emulator, so you can use your preferred shoutcast source client to stream or stream Flash format directly from the Web.

MPEG4IP provides an end-to-end system to explore streaming multimedia. The package includes many existing open source packages and the "glue" to integrate them together. This is a tool for streaming video and audio that is standards-oriented and free from proprietary protocols and extensions.

Provided are a live MPEG-4/H.261/MPEG-2/H.263 MP3/AAC/AMR broadcaster and file recorder, command line utilities such as an MP4 file creator and hinter, and an player that can both stream and playback from local file.

Our development is focused on the Linux platform, and has been ported to Windows, Solaris, FreeBSD, BSD/OS and Mac OS X, but it should be relatively straight-forward to use on other platforms. Many of the included packages are multi-platform already. Mp4live only works on Linux.

Apache::MP3::Resample subclasses Apache::MP3::Playlist to allow the user to downsample audio files before streaming them. This allows users on slower connections to stream songs. When this module is installed, a menu of bitrates is presented in the upper right-hand corner of the screen. The user can choose from one of the bitrates, or select a mode that performs no resampling. The selected bitrate is maintained in a persistent cookie so that resampling is performed whenever the user returns to the site.

This module requires a command-line MP3 encoder to resample and reencode the audio data. If not otherwise specified, Apache::MP3::Resample will try to use the Open Source Lame MP3 encoder. This utility is available at http://www.sulaco.org/mp3. Version 3.90 was used during the development of this module. Your results with other versions may vary.

When you install Lame (or the encoder of your choice), be sure to place it in a directory located in Apaches PATH so that the module can find them at run time. You may need to set the PATH environment variable during Apaches launch, or by explicitly adding a SetEnv directive to the Apache configuration file.

You should be aware that the decoding/reencoding process is CPU-intensive, and server performance may degrade as the number of simultaneous users increases.

The Personal Internet Broadcasting Script (PIBS) is a PHP/Apache frontend to create dynamic mp3 playlists and broadcast them with litestream.
It can be used to manage playlists for a LAN in an office or to manage your Internet mp3 radio station.

splitmastream reads an MPEG stream from stdin, writes a copy of it to a file named YYMMDD.HH-streamname.mp3 and then writes the stream to stdout. Think of it as a hourly-file-cutting tee for MPEG audio. Files are switched on every hour at a frame boundary so that every file should be playable without noise at the beginning/end.

splitmastream is useful for making an archive of an mpeg stream which is, for example, coming from an encoder and going to an icecast transmitter.

Tested on various RedHat Linux distributions, but should compile (with maybe a couple trivial #include changes) on any modern Unix-like operating system. I have only used it on 56kbit/s, 128kbit/s and 192kbit/s CBR layer3 streams but others should work as well.

As usual, if it breaks, you get to keep both pieces.
