Free movie playback software for linux

mOEvIEs is a low-dependency movie database program.

mOEvIEs is easy to use, and doesnt require a database server to be installed like most programs do.

MovieSlave is a very simple cross-platform (Windows, Linux) movie manager.

MovieSlave project can automatically fetch movie details (tagline, runtime, rate, year, plot, director) from the IMDb.

From its clean user interface you can easily add, edit, delete and search for any title without being lost in useless options.

movieinfo is a Perl module created to dump information about movie file(s).

movieinfo < movie files[s] >

Largely based around mplayers midentify script this will dump information about various formats of movie file (depending on what codecs you have installed for mplayer).

vMovieDB project is a movies collection manager for GNOME desktop. Its GTK+ 2.x, application writen on C, created according to Gnome-HIG standarts, vMovieDB fits perfectly in GNOME Desktop Enviroment.

Movie::Info is a thin layer around MPlayers --identify command line flag. As such it can only give you as much information as Mplayer is able to give you which is down to the quality and number of codecs you have installed.
MPlayer is available from http://www.mplayerhq.hu/

This module is largely based on the midentify script shipped with MPlayer.

METHODS

new [path to mplayer]

Returns a new Movie::Info instance or undef if it cant find an mplayer binary.
To find a binary it looks in three places - firstly if youve passed in a path to look at it checks there, secondly at the environment variable $MOVIE_INFO_MPLAYER_PATH and then finally it searches your $PATH like the standard which command in Unix.

info < filename >

Returns a hash representing all the meta data we can garner about file.
Returns undef if it cant read the file.

MoviX2 is a small Linux distro on CD aimed at playing multimedia: when you boot your PC with the MoviX2 CD the distro should be able to start X-windows and launch gmplayer, the GUI interface to mplayer, so that you are left with a nice user-friendly interface you can control by your mouse.

At that point you can safely remove the MoviX2 CD and play all multimedia files you want: DVD [no zone constraint], VCD, DivX, avi, mpg, mp3, ogg etc.

The idea of MoviX2 came to solve two different problems arising from MoviX.
First of all with MoviX you cannot watch DVDs, mainly because you have no space to copy vob files in a 700MB MoviX CD.

Furthermore, those of you who have already a big archive of multimedia CDs would probably not happy at the idea of "MoviX-ing" them all.

MoviX2 solves both problems: it is not made to be embedded with the movie in a CD but just to be loaded in a PC to transform it in a true MultiMedia Box, so after that you can extract from your CD/DVD-ROM the MoviX2 CD and insert & play every DVD/VCD/CD you have around.

So remember: MoviX2 is not an "improved" version of MoviX nor a replacement for it! It has a totally different philosophy behind, the mplayer binary is compiled with different options and it is used for different purposes.

The name is similar because anyway they are both related to Unix and movies :-)
The exponent on the X of MoviX2 is there to indicate that there are two Xs in MoviX2: one is the X of Unix and the other is the X of XFree86 :-)

Ogle is a real DVD player that supports DVD menus and navigation. It can access CSS-protected DVDs if you have libdvdcss installed, take screen shots, and view movies in fullscreen mode.
It handles angles correctly and automatically uses the correct aspect. You can switch subtitles and audio tracks. It runs on Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, and Solaris.
