miniCHESS 0.8
miniCHESS is a chess game WindowMaker dockapp. more>>
miniCHESS is a chess game WindowMaker dockapp.
miniCHESS was born out of boredom. I warn you... if your a chess enthusiast and play a lot then please use xboard or some other chess gui.
Even though miniCHESS has that kinda cool factor, it does get hard on the eyes. I like using miniCHESS for games in which Im in no hurry to finish and go on for a couple days.
Sorry but miniCHESS has no save/restore features yet.
Usage:
miniCHESS has a variety of options:
-h help
-t play text game (def = mouse game)
-r more random moves by the engine
-a hard, engine will also think on your time (def = no)
-d n max search depth used by the engine (def = 29)
-c n max time the engine gets to make a move (def = inf)
-T n size of the transposition table (def = 150001)
-C n size of the cache table (def = 18001)
-k #color background color for a checkmated king (def = #ff0000)
-b #color background color for the black pieces (def = #000000)
-f #color foreground color for the black pieces (def = #ffffff)
-1 #color color for the dark squares (def = #c8c365)
-2 #color color for the light squares (def = #77a26d)
If you specify a search depth (-d) to (say) 4 ply, the program will search until all moves have been examined to a depth of 4. If you set a maximum time (-t) per move and also use the depth option, the search will stop at the specified time or the specified depth, whichever comes first.
Gnuchess is a cpu hog while its thinking. Be aware. When the hard option (-a) is specified then the engine thinks all the time and pins your cpu.
Also gnuchess can be a memory hog. Specifying the size of the transposition and cache tables will modify the memory used. See the memory usage excerpt from the gnuchess FAQ below.
White piece colors are the reverse of what is specified for the black pieces.

Gamazons 0.83
Gamazons is a Gnome implementation of the Amazons board game. more>>
Amazons is a game played on a 10x10 chess board. Each side has four pieces (amazons) that move like chess queens (in a straight line in any direction). Instead of capturing pieces like in chess, the game is determined based on who moves last.
Each move consists of two parts. First an amazon moves to a new square and then fires an arrow to another square (the arrow is fired in a straight line in any direction from the square the amazon landed on).
The square the arrow lands on becomes a permenant block for the rest of the game. No one can move over it, or fire an arrow over it. Every turn an amazon must move and fire an arrow, so every turn there is one less square available on the board. Try and block in your opponent or section off a good chunk of the board for yourself.
This is a Gnome 2 app, so that must be installed on your system for it to work. Other than that, from the main directory, type "./configure" to generate the necessary makefiles. Then make, make install to compile and install the game. Then type gamazons to start the game.
Note: Ive heard reports of the ./configure erroring out on RH8 with the following message:
checking for libgnomeui-2.0... Package libgnomeui-2.0 was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `libgnomeui-2.0.pc to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package libgnomeui-2.0 found
This problem can be fixed by installing the libgnomeui-devel-2.0.3-3 RPM file.
You can set the player settings from the settings->player menu. You can set it to play AI vs AI or whatever you like.
However, I do have a few default option overrides. For instance, when you get near the end of the game and you dont feel like brainlessly moving a bunch of pieces that are already blocked off into their own areas, you can click on "Auto Finish" which will set both players as AI with a 1 second think time. Also, if you get a little tired of waiting for the AI to move (perhaps you set the time to think too long), you can click on the Force Move button and make him move right then.
Things that arent implemented yet are the network and help menus. Also the undo button doesnt do anything yet (although Ive pretty much got the framework to do it).

Guarded Memory Move 0.6
Guarded Memory Move tool is useful for studying buffer overflows and catching them together with a good stack image. more>>
Guarded Memory Move project gets handy when you have to study buffer overflows and you need to catch them together with a "good" stack image. When a stack overflow has been exploited, the back trace is already gone together with good information about parameters and local variables, that are of vital importance when trying to understand how the attacker is trying to work out the exploit. The GMM library uses dynamic function call interception to catch the most common functions that are used by attackers to exploit stack buffers.
The GMM library uses the LD_PRELOAD capability and offers two services to the user. First of all, it avoids buffer overflow to allow the attacker to execute shell-code on your machine. Second, in case where an exploit is detected, the stack content is saved and a segmentation fault is triggered. The resulting core dump will then have all the necessary information to debug the exploit and fix the software. Internally, the library insert itself between the application and the glibc library and intercept functions that might lead to buffer overflow exploits. Before calling the glibc core function, the GMM layer saves part of the stack frame above the caller to a temporary location in its frame.
It also stores the previous three return addresses in its local storage before calling the glibc core function. When the core function returns, the GMM code samples again the previously recorded return addresses and, if they differ, it restores the previously saved stack frame and issue a segmentation fault. This with a clean stack frame, so that it can be inspected with a debugger. While other solutions exist to detect buffer overflow exploits, like for example StackGuard and StackShield, those differs from GMM in many ways. They live as gcc patches and do require you to rebuild your application to use their functionalities. The good of this approach is that every single function is protected against buffer overflows.
The bad of this solution is that every single function is protected against buffer overflows. That is, performance regression on the whole application, even if this is not really a huge problem when hunting for buffer overflows. Another solution similar to GMM is LibSafe, but it does not save and restore the stack frame by making it unusable for debugging. But lets see how GMM differs from the above listed solutions. First of all, GMM works everywhere there are stack frames and the gcc and glibc duo. That means that it is not limited to i386 only. And now the real reason for the GMM existence.
Enhancements:
- GCCs __builtin_return_address and __builtin_frame_address seems to return garbage instead of NULL at the last frame. This release fixes the problem.

Games::Alak is a simple game-tree implementation of a gomoku-like game.
SYNOPSIS
% perl -MGames::Alak -e Games::Alak::play
...Or just run Alak.pm as if it were a program...
...Program responds with output, and a prompt:
Lookahead set to 3. I am X, you are O.
Enter h for help
X moves from 1 to 5, yielding .xxxx..oooo
alak>
...and now you enter the commands to play.
This module implements a simple game-tree system for the computer to play against the user in a game of Alak. You can just play the game for fun; or you can use this module as a starting point for understanding game trees (and implementing smarter strategy -- the modules current logic is fairly simple-minded), particularly after reading my Perl Journal #18 article on trees, which discusses this modules implementation of game trees as an example of general tree-shaped data structures.
