Porcupine is a web application server that provides an object oriented framework for developing web applications rapidly.
Many of the tasks required for building web applications as you know them, are either eliminated or simplified. For instance, when developing a Porcupine application you dont have to design a relational database. You only have to design and implement your business objects as classes, using the building blocks provided by the framework (datatypes). Porcupine integrates a native object database, no mapping required.
Another tedious task for web applications is the interface design, and the constraints imposed by HTML. QuiX, the servers integrated XUL motor, simplifies the interface design process. All you have to do is describe your applications interface in XML and write the appropriate event handlers. You dont have to waste time and money on widget implementations. QuiX comes with a variety of ready to use widgets, accelerating the development process.
Generally, every Porcupine application consists of three distinct layers. The first is the business layer consisting of the business objects which encapsulate the business logic.

Open Admin for Schools is a School Administration Program. It is a freely available, open source software package and is licensed under the GNU General Public License.
Open Administration for Schools project is entirely web based and can run from a centrally located division wide server or a single computer in a school. It is designed to support an entire division on one or more central computers but can also work just fine for a single school.
Currently several school divisions use this approach and have 15+ schools on a single central server. This is because it is designed to be lightweight both in server resource requirements and in communication bandwidth.
It is secure. Each school has two or more virtual websites and each is protected with password(s). One site, the admin site, is used by the school office and another, the teacher site, is used by teachers in the classroom.
The teacher site also has password access for entering attendance by teachers and also uses cookies that expire in a short period, further limiting access. Another site, a parent/student site, is controlled by parent/student userids and passwords. A fourth virtual site may be used by school liason officers from outside agencies to give them a slightly different access to school information. (Community Schools)
Main features:
- Demographics - It stores student and family information that can be viewed and printed in a variety of ways.
- Attendance - Attendance can be entered either by secretaries in the school office or by teachers in the classroom. It features the ability to do different numbers of periods per day for elementary grades vs high school and middle years. This will allow elementary classes to have 2 classes per day (AM/PM) with a homeroom teacher while higher grades can have attendance done on a per subject period basis (and be subject based). Attendance reports are integrated with report cards/progress reports. A variety of attendance reports are available. A variety of attendance entry methods are available for use by teachers and/or secretaries to allow it to integrate with normal school practice.
- Discipline - A simple discipline module to track student discipline events and track outcomes, etc. Behaviours may be categorized and statistical reports may be printed. Enrollment changes are also posted into this system.
- Report Card System - a flexible reporting system with per subject objectives (up to 20), integrated attendance reporting, etc. All report cards are printed as PDF reports and may include a school logo. All subjects may have unlimited length text comments, and can have any desired ordering. Attendance reporting will now do days open, days enrolled, days absent, and times late as standard.
- IEP (Special Needs) Site that is integrated at the division level that allows special needs teachers to tailor individual student programs that can be viewed from each schools teacher site. This includes the ability to add student medical history, testing done, student teams (and responsibilities), and objectives chosen from lists of thousands, categorized in a variety of ways. There can be up to 32 objectives per subject and each subject is specific to that particular child. His/her program would consist of a variety of subjects in areas such as fine motor control, etc.
- This system can generate progress reports (for use with the report card system) as well as a comprehensive IEP report containing the yearly plan for the child. This IEP can also viewed from the teacher site, to ensure compliance throughout the year.
- Export/Import Modules - to allow students to easily transfer schools within divisions without re-entry of demographic information. Export of data to other programs. Export of data to Provincial authorities via an automated XML based transfer mechanism.
- Saskatchewan SDS support for direct XML transfers of student demographic, subject and enrollment marks to provincial authorities.
- Online Gradebook to allow teachers to enter marks and assessments onine from school or home. It can group and weight assessment items and post directly into the report card system.
- Parent Viewing scripts to allow parents to view attendance, gradebook(where allowed), and report card marks. This is easily integrated into existing school sites.

Sanos is a minimalistic 32-bit x86 OS kernel for network server appliances running on standard PC hardware. more>>
Sanos is a minimalistic 32-bit x86 OS kernel for Java based server appliances running on standard PC hardware.
This enables you to run java server applications without the need to install a traditional host operating system like Windows or Linux. Only a standard Java HotSpot VM and the sanos kernel are needed.
The kernel was developed as part of an experiment on investigating the feasibility of running java server applications without a traditional operating system only using a simple kernel.
The kernel implements basic operating system services like booting, memory management, thread scheduling, local and remote file systems, TCP/IP networking and DLL loading and linking.
A win32 layer allows the Windows version of the standard HotSpot JVM to run under sanos, essentially providing a JavaOS platform for server applications. This enables you to run java based server applications, like tomcat and jboss, under sanos.
Alternatively, you can use sanos as a small kernel for embedded server applications written in C. Sanos has a fairly standard POSIX based API and an ANSI Standard C library. In this case you dont need the JVM and the win32 wrappers.

- The Visual Studio wizard can now generate a floppy disk boot image configured for the application.
- Shell prompt can be configured by setting the prompt property in the [shell] section of the os.ini file.

- The floppy motor timeout routine now acquires the floppy mutex before turning off the motor in order to prevent race conditions.

The mode parameter for exitos() can be used to specify the shutdown mode (halt, reboot, poweroff, debug). A shutdown command has been added to the shell. The power status can be retrieved using /proc/apm.

- The raise() function now returns an error if the signal number is invalid.
- Breakpoint traps are now sent to the user mode signal handler. This allows breakpoints to be handled by user mode code.
- Signals now exits the currently executing job with the signal number as exit code. However, if the debug flag in the PEB is set the debugger is entered if an unhandled signal is encountered. The debug flag can be set using the debug command in the shell. The debug flag can be configured using the debug property in the [os] section of os.ini. The default value of the debug flag is 0, unless the system is build in debug configuration.
- readv() and writev() implemented in vfs.
- The kernel log is now implemented by the device driver /dev/klog. The kernel log now support ioctl for waiting for new log entries in the kernel log. The kprintf has been extended to support different log levels.
- The syslog interface has been redesigned in to comply with POSIX. The syslog now supports logging to a syslog server by setting the loghost property in the [os] section of os.ini.
- New klog daemon to read entries from the kernel log (/dev/klog) and add them to the system log.
- The sockaddr and sockaddr_in structures has been change to conform to winsock definitions.
- The sleep() function has been renamed to msleep(). A new POSIX conformant sleep function has been added to unistd.h.
- Added sys/time.h header file. Also added tzp parameter to gettimeofday() for POSIX compliance.
- New simple text editor utility (edit.exe) added.
- The syserror() function has been moved from libc.lib to the os.dll as an exported os api call.

LinuxBIOS is a project that aims to replace the normal BIOS with a little bit of hardware initialization. more>>
LinuxBIOS project is aimed at replacing the normal BIOS with a little bit of hardware initialization and a compressed Linux kernel that can be booted from a cold start.
The project was started as part of clustering research work in the Cluster Reseach Lab at the Advanced Computing Laboratory at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The primary motivation behind the project was the desire to have the operating system gain control of a cluster node from power on.
Other beneficial consequences of using LinuxBIOS include needing only two working motors to boot (cpu fan and power supply), fast boot times (current fastest is 3 seconds), and freedom from proprietary (buggy) BIOS code, to name a few.
These secondary benefits are numerous and have helped gain support from many vendors in both the high performance computing as well as embedded computing markets.
Note that, on newer systems, there need be no moving parts at all. At LANL, we are building a new no moving parts 16-node cluster to demonstrate this capability. The cluster will fit in a toolbox, run from a battery, boot in 10 seconds, and be controlled from your laptop (which, sadly, will still have a few moving parts).
Enhancements:
- This release adds preliminary support for M50FW040, M29W040B, M50FLW040A, M50FLW040B, M50FLW080A, M50FLW080B, M50FW080, M50FW016, M50LPW116, and M29W010B (all by ST) to flash ROM.

Other beneficial consequences of using LinuxBIOS include needing only two working motors to boot (cpu fan and power supply), fast boot times (current fastest is 3 seconds), and freedom from proprietary (buggy) BIOS code, to name a few.
These secondary benefits are numerous and have helped gain support from many vendors in both the high performance computing as well as embedded computing markets.
Note that, on newer systems, there need be no moving parts at all. At LANL, we are building a new no moving parts 16-node cluster to demonstrate this capability. The cluster will fit in a toolbox, run from a battery, boot in 10 seconds, and be controlled from your laptop (which, sadly, will still have a few moving parts).
