Mint 2.2 Beta

Mint 2.2 Beta

Mint is a small X toolbar that can switch network configurations in a few keystrokes. more>>
Mint is a small X toolbar that can switch network configurations in a few keystrokes. Mint enables you to change your network configurations in a few keystrokes. It supports DHCP and static addresses, and can execute an authentication script when it changes the configuration. It also displays a clock and a battery meter.
mint displays the name of current network configuration. It also displays a clock and a battery meter. The battery meter shows the percentage of remaining battery life and appends a `+ to the battery life when AC power is connected.
Since it changes network configuration, mint must be run setuid root. It safely invokes the authentication script as the user who started mint, not root.
mint provides a network configuration called "off" to shutdown the network interface. mint displays "?" if it does not recognize the current network configuration. It displays "xx" if the network interface does not exist.
The authentication script is run in the background. When you switch network configuration, mint kills any previously running authentication script. For DHCP configurations, mint does does not run the authentication script if the DHCP request fails.
DHCP support is made by the "dhcpcd" command, which mint expects to find in /sbin. dhcpcd should have come with your Linux distribution; if not you can get it from http://www.phystech.com/download/dhcpcd.html.
Enhancements:
- The beta version of Bianca was released and is available for download. Bianca comes with two brand new themes: Bianca-Blue and Bianca-Green which give the distribution a whole new minty look. Only one panel at the bottom, a Slab-like menu, new default icons. The following applications were added to Bianca: mintMenu, a replacement for the GNOME menu; mintConfig, a Control Center application; mintDisk, a program which automatically mounts FAT32 and NTFS partitions; mintDesktop, which now comes as a package, has a graphical configuration front-end; mintWifi, which now comes as a package.

Linux Mint 3.0 (Cassandra)

Linux Mint 3.0 (Cassandra)

Linux Mints purpose is to produce an elegant, up to date and comfortable GNU/Linux desktop distribution. more>>
Linux Mints purpose is to produce an elegant, up to date and comfortable GNU/Linux desktop distribution.
Is Linux Mint suitable for companies?
Yes. Linux Mint offers paid commercial support to companies and individuals. Free community support is also available from the forums and the IRC channel. The main purpose of Linux Mint is to innovate and constantly bring the best desktop solutions to its users. For this reason, the release cycle is fast and a new version of Linux Mint can be released every month or every two months. All released versions of Linux Mint are actively supported and some of the releases (possibly Bianca or Cassandra) will come with a Long Term Support guarantee (a guarantee that our Support Center will support these releases for the years to come).
Is Linux Mint suitable for individuals?
Yes, definitely. We believe Linux is the best operating system on the market. There are more than 300 active Linux distributions and were working hard at becoming the best alternative for your desktop. This is a tough competition as there are other great desktop operating systems and distributions out there. We have faith in the quality of our desktop and a lot of great ideas. If your computer is a PC and you have more than 512MB RAM you should try Linux Mint and see what you think about it. If youre running a 5 years old non-free operating system such as Microsoft Windows XP you should definitely be impressed. We like hearing about your experience and taking your suggestions onboard so please give us your feedback.
Why is there a Light Edition and a Full Edition?
Linux Mint respects the GPL and it also respects the copyrights and licenses of the proprietary software it distributes. However it uses technologies that have been patented in some parts of the World. Most countries do not recognize the legitimacy of software patents so for most of our users this is not a problem. But if youre unlucky and you live in a country where software patents are legally enforcable, you need a version of Linux Mint which is free of patented technologies, and this is what the Light Edition is about.
Why does Linux Mint include proprietary drivers?
It doesnt. If it did, it would be legally wrong (because it would violate the GPL) or ethically wrong (if some dirty trick was used for the user to link the code to the kernel for instance).
What about proprietary software?
We believe in open source and release all our work with the corresponding source code. We owe a lot to the Free Software movement and to the GPL but we also owe a lot to all the developers who contributed ideas and tools and who made software better and better throughout the years. Some of them released their source code as well and thus granted us more freedom and more flexibility. Others released their software with proprietary licenses and although this didnt give us the freedom we would have liked it still contributed to make software better. We like Software in general, Free Software even more, but we do not believe in boycotting Proprietary Software.
Enhancements:
- The brand new "mintInstall" and the "Linux Mint Software Portal": http://www.linuxmint.com/software
- Gnome 2.18 (speed improvements)
- Kernel 2.6.20 (better hardware support)
- Ubuntu Feisty innovations (restricted-manager, desktop-effects, windows migration assistant, avahi)
- OpenOffice 2.2 (complete suite)
- Thunderbird replaces Evolution as the default email reader
- Pidgin replaces Gaim as the default messenger
- Sunbird is now installed by default
- The Gimp is installed by default
- Gnome-control-center replaces mintConfig as the default control center application
- Both mintDisk (for internal drives) and NTFS-Config (for external drives) are present for NTFS support
- Support for Gnome Templates in mintDesktop
- mintInstall replaces gnome-app-install and the upcoming Clickn Run.
- Drag & Drop support in mintMenu with many other improvements
- Sun Java 6 replaces Sun Java 5
- Compiz, Beryl and Emerald installed by default
- New artwork

ARAnyM 0.9.5 Beta

ARAnyM 0.9.5 Beta

ARAnyM comes from Atari Running on Any Machine and is virtual machine software for running the Atari ST/TT/Falcon OS. more>>
ARAnyM comes from Atari Running on Any Machine and is virtual machine software for running the Atari ST/TT/Falcon OS.
It is a virtual machine software for running the Atari ST/TT/Falcon operating systems (TOS, FreeMiNT, MagiC and others) and TOS/GEM applications on any kind of hardware - be it an IBM clone (read it as "PC", an Apple, an Unix server, a graphics workstation or even a portable computer.
We started this project to fill the demand of modern applications, games, demos and multimedia for higher CPU/graphics power. Quite frankly, you cant expect that 9-17 years old Atari hardware will replay fullscreen DivX movies, encode sound to Ogg Vorbis in real time or just compile a new FreeMiNT kernel or SDL game in a reasonable amount of time. Is that a reason to give up on Atari TOS/GEM altogether and switch to another platform/OS? No! ARAnyM is here to give you the much asked CPU speed, large amount of RAM, huge colourful graphics and anything else you need to keep running your favorite TOS/GEM applications.
We would like you to think about ARAnyM as about yet another TOS clone, similar to Medusa, Hades or Milan, but actually much cheaper and way more powerful. Our goal is to create a distribution installable from a floppy/CD that would turn any PC machine into full featured Atari power machine. If we were a hardware vendor we could even sell computers that would boot directly to TOS desktop! That could help all the remaining Atari users that wish to upgrade their aging machines.
Main features:
- MC68040 compatible CPU (including optional MMU!)
- MC68881 compatible FPU
- JIT Compiler for CPU and FPU (speeds up CPU+FPU up to 10x!)
- ST-RAM 14 MB
- Fast-RAM configurable 0-3824 MB
- Host accelerated fVDI graphics (large highcolor/truecolor resolutions)
- Access to Host OS filesystems using BetaDOS or MiNT native XFS driver
- Ethernet networking via host using MiNT-Net XIF driver
- TOS 4.x XBIOS compatible sound (16-bit 48 kHz stereo sound)
- Parallel port (bidirectional)
- MFP, IKBD, ACIA, VIDEL, BLITTER, FDC, IDE, DSP MC56001
Please note that most hardware emulation is there just to make TOS booting possible. It is not our goal to create an emulator of existing Atari machine. Dont expect that ill-designed applications will work as they would on original Atari machine. Still, our compatibility ratio is much much higher than any of the TOS clones achieved so far.
ARAnyM has been intended to run primarily on Linux/x86 but thanks to libSDL and effort of some ARAnyM team members it currently runs on the following platforms and operating systems:
- All 11 Debian GNU/Linux platforms
- MS Windows/x86 (Cygwin)
- NetBSD/x86
- OpenBSD/x86
- MacOS X/PPC
- Irix/SGI
- Solaris/Sun Sparc
- FreeMiNT/m68k (in progress)
- FreeBSD/x86 (in progress)
Please note that ARAnyM is tested and fully working on the Linux-ia32 only. Some of the other platforms/systems might not have all features enabled or might suffer from some bugs that are caused by limitations of the particular host operating system.
Enhancements:
- New release brings major speed up of the MMU version. FreeMiNT with MMU or Linux-m68k can be run on an average ARAnyM machine faster than on any real MC680x0 now. Mac OS X target has been improved and many smaller bugs have been fixed.

Gtk# (gtk-sharp) is a .NET language binding for the GTK+ toolkit and assorted GNOME libraries. more>>
Gtk# (gtk-sharp) is a .NET language binding for the GTK+ toolkit and assorted GNOME libraries. Gtk# is free software, licensed under the GNU LGPL. The target is the 2.6 platform.

Building & Installing Gtk#:

./configure
make
make install

You may want to consider using configures prefix option to install Gtk# using the same prefix as Mono. That way all of your .NET assemblies get placed in the same place, and you dont need to do any extra "configuring" to make it so mono (and mint) can find your assemblies. In other words, doing something like:

./configure --prefix=/the/path/that/was/used/for/mono
make
make install

(Of course, replace "/the/path/that/was/used/for/mono" with whatever path which was used for Mono. This might have been "/usr", "/usr/local", or something similar.)

If you are compiling from SVN, you will need libtool and the auto* tools and will need to replace the configure above with bootstrap for the 2.5.x version or bootstrap-2.4 for the 1.9.x version.
