mod_libpq is an Apache 1.3 Web server module which maintains persistent connections to one or more PostgreSQL databases, eliminating the need for cumbersome middleware "glue".
Millions of complex pages can be fully or partially pre-rendered, stored in a database, and then served directly to the Web.
One database can be associated with the main Apache server and an additional database can be associated with each virtual host defined in httpd.conf.
Requests are converted into a pair of user configurable queries which are sent directly to the database via PostgreSQLs libpq API. The first query processes the request headers and the second query returns the document content.
Enhancements:
- This release added support for specifying the content type of returned documents.
- The content type and the content and header queries can now be associated with specific directories and locations in the Apache configuration file, allowing much more complex Web sites to be defined.
- Database connections can be deferred until the first request or disabled entirely to reduce resource requirements.
- More advanced examples were provided.

Castore comes from CApitalization & STORagE and takes place in a user-centered design approach to build an open archive platform, planned to create institutional repositories, managed by librarians in their respective institutions.

With this system, the authors are able to store, convert (XML), fully index, manage, perpetuate, valorize, and distribute their digital documents.

It uses an assembly of components (Tomcat, OO, JDO, Saxon, Lucene, etc.) to build middleware applications, relying on XML and any relational database.

The system has been developed with a component architecture (J2EE) to be able to integrate the platform with any intranet environment with the minimum cost of development.

libEtPans purpose of this mail library is to provide a portable, efficient middleware for different kinds of mail access.
When using the drivers interface, the interface is the same for all kinds of mail access, remote and local mailboxes.
libEtPan! project can read mbox, MH format, and Maildir mailboxes, and does MIME parsing.
Installation:
The simplest way to compile this package is:
1. `cd to the directory containing the packages source code and type `./configure to configure the package for your system. If youre using `csh on an old version of System V, you might need to type `sh ./configure instead to prevent `csh from trying to execute `configure itself.
Running `configure takes awhile. While running, it prints some messages telling which features it is checking for.
2. Type `make to compile the package.
3. Optionally, type `make check to run any self-tests that come with the package.
4. Type `make install to install the programs and any data files and documentation.
5. You can remove the program binaries and object files from the source code directory by typing `make clean. To also remove the files that `configure created (so you can compile the package for a different kind of computer), type `make distclean. There is also a `make maintainer-clean target, but that is intended mainly for the packages developers. If you use it, you may have to get all sorts of other programs in order to regenerate files that came with the distribution.
Enhancements:
- This release is just a bugfix release for the compile errors in 0.50, namely with enabled SASL, GnuTLS, and BIOs handling with openSSL.

ACE short from ADAPTIVE Communication Environment is an object-oriented (OO) C++ framework that can help you develop and deploy high-performance software systems faster and better.
ACE is especially useful for systems that use network and/or inter-process communications and that take advantage of multithreading. While the ACE source code is free, thats not the only way you save money with ACE.
ACEs wrappers and higher-level patterns help you develop your software quickly and portably, helping you to complete your projects on time and within budget.
Over the past decade, my research group has worked with many collaborators on large-scale distributed application R&D projects in diverse domains, including command and control systems, telecom, datacom, medical engineering, distributed interactive simulations, and financial services.
Regardless of the domain and application requirements, weve found that software developers wrestle with the same core infrastructure challenges. Key challenges focus on OS platform portability, connection management and service initialization, event demultiplexing and event handler dispatching, multi-threading and synchronization, fault detection and fault tolerance, and various quality-of-service (QoS) issues, such as controlling latency, throughput, and jitter end-to-end.
Unfortunately, its very costly, time consuming, and error-prone for researchers and developers companies to independently rediscover and reinvent ad hoc solutions to these core distributed application software development challenges.
Fortunately, we have identified a relatively concise set of patterns and framework components that can be applied systematically to eliminate many tedious, error-prone, and non-portable aspects of developing and maintaining distributed applications.
A decade of intense R&D on these topics has yielded ACE, which is an object-oriented framework that implements many core patterns for concurrent communication software. We have applied the patterns and components in the ACE framework to develop The ACE ORB (TAO), which is our standards-based, CORBA middleware framework that allows clients to invoke operations on distributed objects without concern for object location, programming language, OS platform, communication protocols and interconnects, and hardware.
TAO is designed using the best software practices and patterns that we have discovered in our work on ACE in order to automate the delivery of high-performance and real-time QoS to distributed applications.
Enhancements:
- This release adds support for Intel C++ specific optimizations for Linux on IA64.
- It improves support for ACE_OS::fgetc, and adds support for other low-level I/O.
- Shared library builds on AIX now produce a libxxx.so file.
- A workaround has been added for a bugfix in GCC in Fedora Core 7.
- The footprint has been reduced on some platforms.
- Major improvements have been made to IPv6 support.
- TAO DDS enhancements have been added.
- There are assorted bugfixes and other minor enhancements.

PETALS is an ObjectWeb Java Business Integration (JBI) platform. PETALS provides lightweight and packaged integration solutions, based on JSR-208 specifications, with a high focus on distribution and clustering.
PETALS is part of ObjectWeb ESB initiative, and was launched in June 2005 by EBM WebSourcing and Fossil E-Commerce.
The project leverages ObjectWeb architecture and projects like Fractal, JORAM, JOnAS to provide a JBI container with a focus on :
- JBI specification conformance
- Integrate JBI in JOnAS
- Multi JVM, distributed and clustered platform for JBI components with native transport based on existing ObjectWeb middleware : JORAM and Dream
- Propose packaged solutions for process orchestration (with focus on BPEL engine, Transformation engine, Web Services and JMS binding components) and B2B integration (with focus on Transformation and B2B bindng components like EDI, ...)
Enhancements:
- This release contains all the PETALS elements that are useful for integration solutions.
- New features include static definition of the distributed environment (avoiding multicast auto-discovering), an improvement to the Web Administrative console, IBM JVM compatibility, and more Binding components.

WebCit is a Web-based frontend to the Citadel groupware/collaboration system. WebCit project is an attractive Web middleware layer that allows user-friendly access.
By combining WebCit and Citadel, you can have a versatile online environment with many users concurrently accessing the same system using the user interface of their choice (text, Web, or downloaded client software).
Enhancements:
- Handling of the local "default" timezone was improved for calendar items that dont specify one.
- This version also adds group select (shift-click) for bulk delete and drag/drop in the mailbox view.
- Finally, this version introduces access to Citadels full text index search right from its own Web pages.
