Q3Master 1.0

Q3Master project is a Quake3Arena master server. more>>
Q3Master project is a Quake3Arena master server.
Q3Master is a standalone master server for Quake3Arena (and derived games, like RTCW).
It is intended for local networks without Internet connections (or firewalls which block Q3A). It can also be used for larger private networks on which more than one Q3A server exists.
Q3Master can also be used to query servers in a local subnet, using broadcasts.
The found servers can then be sent to another (or a central) master server to collect data from multiple subnets.
Enhancements:
- enhanced documenation
- all supported games and versions
- installation and usage
- performance
- protocols
- wrote a load test suite
- performance enhancements
- added UDP proxy used for testing

ISO Master 1.0

ISO Master 1.0

ISO Master is an open-source, graphical CD image editor that runs on Linux. more>>
ISO Master is an open-source, graphical CD image editor that runs on Linux; and bkisofs, the underlying library used for reading, modifying and writing ISO images.
The hard part of this project is the library for working with ISOs (bkisofs). My hope is that people will like this library enough to make their own GUIs using it. So my choice of widget set (GTK, that is) will not necessarily annoy too many people.
Main features:
- Display file/directory contents of the image and and the regular filesystem in two panels and be able to navigate them.
- Display file sizes for files on image/filesystem.
- Sort by name or by size
- Select any number of items in the file browsers.
- Extract selected from image to the filesystem
- Delete selected from image.
- Add selected from filesystem to image.
- Save modified image.
- Create image from scratch.
Enhancements:
- Usability and performance improvements.
- 10 new translations.
- A bug that sometimes caused corrupt ISOs to be written has been fixed.

Research Master 1.2c

Research Master 1.2c

ResearchMaster has been designed to make working a little easier. more>>
ResearchMaster project has been designed to make working a little easier. Specifically, the application can be either a storage facility for all of your precious, miscellaneous digital information, or for just some of it. The project began as a way for the author to [1] have a centralized library for all the papers and various snippets he collects, and [2] to have some powerful, built-in support for BibTeX, the LaTeX bibliography system ( The LaTeX bibliography system, as described in the Leslie Lamport book. ISBN 0-201-52983-1).
When the application starts up, it creates a virtual filesystem (vfs) from information contained in records. Each record appends itself under at least one folder in the vfs, and the vfs is represented by a tree-widget system of folders and records. The application is divided into folder controls (left) and record controls (right).
Each record is actually a set of three python dictionaries, stored in a flat ascii text file. The three dictionaries correspond to [1] BibTex information corresponding to the record, [2] Meta information (eg. isbn, call number, url, membership) and [3] an endless notes file. When a record is selected from the tree widget, the corresponding three dictionaries are presented in a three-tabbed notebook widget on the right side of the application.
New records are created via a button on the records toolbar. When you create a new record the application pops a filechooser and you are given the opportunity to import a single file. Perhaps the imported file is a pdf copy of a research paper that you dont want to lose. ResearchMaster is a good place to store it. First, the record and the imported file now have each other. Now you can keep a log of your involvement with the file in the notes portion of the record. The Meta portion of the record contains non-BibTex information, such as which folders the record is a member of. The application accesses the records BibTex information whenever the record has membership within the subtree of a particular folder for which a recursive bibliography is being generated.
Heres a typical example: Say you create a folder for some project. Lets say that after six months your folder now has several subtrees of folders and records, all arranged according to the scheme that happened. Now imagine there are twenty records with BibTex information strewn throughout the projects subtree, side-by-side with other records that dont have BibTex information (notes, whatever). By pushing the Create Bibliography button on the left toolbar the application will produce a perfectly formatted BibTex file with all twenty records.
Each record can be made a member of any folder simply by adding the folders path to the membership list in the Meta portion of the record. The tree widget is dynamically constructed by recursively examining a directory tree (corresponding to the folders of the tree-widget) and the membership list contained in each record. This is done so that we only have one physical copy of each record, despite the fact that the record might show up in fifty different places throughout the tree widget.
The file that gets imported with a record can be any file of any format. You can tell ResearchMaster to launch the file as an argument to any external application, based on the filenames suffix (.gif, .avi, .mpg, .mp3). Then, select the record from the tree, push the launch button (on the records toolbar), and voila! The associated application brings up your file. Thats one feature that makes working a little easier.
Enhancements:
- Small correction was needed on line 1140 of ResearchMaster_wxuser.py, where "researchmaster" needed to be "ReseaerchMaster" for preferences initialization.

Multicasting Master-Slave Network Filesystem 0.8

Multicasting Master-Slave Network Filesystem 0.8

Multicasting Master-Slave Network Filesystem is a method of distributing an entire filesystem among several machines. more>>
Network technology evolves quickly, but available bandwidths are still not sufficient for fast transfers of big files to a bunch of clients (for example populating operating systems installation images).

This paper describes Multicasting Master-Slave Network Filesystem (mmsnfs) -- a new method of distributing entire filesystem among several client-machines simultaneously and efficiently.

Moreover it provides mechanisms for modifying distibuted filesystem structure reliably and securing it against introducing inconsistencies. It is designed to be used in small networks of similarly-configured machines, for instance university labs or internet cafes.

comserv 1.4.3

comserv 1.4.3

COMSERV is a program that allows you to talk to a network terminal server such as a Xyplex MAXserver 1600. more>>
COMSERV is a program that allows you to talk to a network terminal server such as a Xyplex MAXserver 1600.
The handy thing about this program is that the client side of the connection does not need to know anything about how to talk to the terminal server. COMSERV handles the connection details. Thus, you can use existing programs like tip to talk to devices attached to your network terminal server without any modification.
Also, you can use COMSERV to turn your Unix computer itself into a terminal server and serve up its own local serial ports over the network for remote systems to access. This is handy if you have several systems lying around and you want to utilize devices attached to their serial ports.
My primary motivation for writing this program was to expand the I/O capabilities of my FreeBSD home computer. I have many serial devices that I want to connect to my PC which include my modem, Palm Pilot, GPS, various micro-controllers, my EEPROM programmer, and other computers and printers. But with only two serial ports on my PC, I became annoyed at having to reach around the back of my computer and swap cables every time I wanted to plug in a different device. [I think all inventions are the product of the laziness of the inventor :-)] So I searched eBay and found a couple of these Xyplex terminal servers that looked promising, I bid on them, got them, and began hacking.
The only problem with using this type of device for serial expansion, is that if you use a program like tip on Unix (tip is a very basic but functional program to connect directly to a serial port), it expects to be able to open the serial port by opening a /dev/xyz device file that corresponds to a real serial device. The Xyplex, on the other hand, communicates to the Unix system via an ethernet network. In order to talk to one of the serial ports on the Xyplex, you need to establish a TCP/IP connection between your Unix computer and the Xyplex device at a particular TCP port. The TCP port you connect to determines which Xyplex serial port you connect to. For the Xyplex 1600, serial port 1 is TCP port 2100, serial port 2, is TCP port 2200 and so on.
Unfortuneately, tip, and programs like it, have no idea how to establish a TCP/IP connection to the Xyplex in order to transfer data to and from a serial device connected to the Xyplex.
This is what COMSERV does. COMSERV creates a set of pseudo-tty device files that are palatable to tip and other programs. COMSERV opens the master side of the pseudo terminal and the client program (tip in this case) opens the slave side. Data written on the slave endpoint comes out on the master endpoint and vice-versa. This mechanism establishes a connection between the client program and COMSERV. COMSERV then uses TCP/IP to establish a connection to the network terminal server.
Thus, data originating from the client program is written to the slave tty where is read by COMSERV. COMSERV then writes the data to the network socket to the Xyplex, which then passes it on to the designated serial port. Data originating from the serial device attached to the Xyplex takes the reverse path.
Only one instance of COMSERV is required to be running on your system to handle all of your network terminal servers (it can handle as many terminal servers and ports as the speed and resources of your system allows). COMSERV is designed to handle many connections in this fashion, and does so by multiplexing between them using asynchronous device and socket I/O.
While I wrote COMSERV to talk to a Xyplex MAXserver 1600, it should work with other manufacturers products as long as they follow a similar API. The Xyplex devices that I have are 16 port devices that connect serial devices to an ethernet network.
If COMSERV sounds useful to you, feel free to download and use it. The program is provided in source form, so you will need to extract it and compile it. If you use FreeBSD, simply do the following:
% cd /usr/ports/comms/comserv
% make install
I use it on FreeBSD 4-STABLE. I dont currently know of any outstanding bugs, but if you find and fix any bugs, please send me your fixes so that others can benefit from them as well.
If you do decide to use COMSERV, please note the accompanying license. In a nutshell, you can use it without restriction as long as you credit me and keep the copyright notice intact. If you happen to like it, feel free to send your thanks, letting me know. If you dont like it, let me know why, perhaps I can improve it. If you improve it, please send me your changes and Ill see about integrating them so that others can benefit from your improvements.
Enhancements:
- Implement a power of 2 backoff and retry for failing connections with a maximum 10 minute wait. This keeps from filling up the logs with failed repeated attempts.

Alternatives system 0.2.0

Alternatives system 0.2.0

Alternatives system is an implementation of a Debian alternatives system. more>>
Alternatives system is an implementation of a Debian alternatives system; a system that allows several programs with the same or similar functions to be installed on a single system at the same time.
This implementation solves some problems and limitations of original implementation.
Alternatives architecture
General engine:
- alternatives-auto - turn into auto mode some alternatives item
- alternatives-manual - turn into manual mode some alternatives item
- alternatives-update - update current state of alternatives symlinks
Special scripts for the packages:
- alternatives-install - register new alternatives config, for use in %post package script
- alternatives-uninstall - unregister some alternatives config, for use in %preun package script
ALT Linux specific:
- alternatives-helper - helper script to use in package scripts
- alternatives-upgrade - tool to upgrade from old config format (XML based) to new.
Directories:
- /usr/bin - all scripts live here
- /etc/alternatives/packages.d - all package configs
- /etc/alternatives/auto - symlinks to registered configs
- /etc/alternatives/manual - list of alternatives in manual mode
- /etc/alternatives/links - for internal use only, alternatives symlinks lives here
- /usr/share/alternatives - directory with some helper functions and scripts
Original Debian alternatives implementation has some limitations and problems, so we (ALT Linux Team) rewrite this subsystem. What changes we have made?
- You dont need to give special generic name for altenatives file. This name is autogenerated now.
- This version is written in shell, awk and sed , so we reduce a number of dependencies, therefore, number of the packages in basesystem.
- We use different update model. Original alternatives system maintains its own database, by creating/removing files in system. In our alternatives (rpm) packages contains its configs and places them into generic directory during package installation. After package removal its config is automatically removed. It works like Debian menu subsystem, and its more stable.
- Now we have not any limitations for master-slave hieracly depth.
- New alternatives system works with no groups, but with each item. You can turn into manual mode any available item. There are only one difference between master and slave: weight calculation algorithm. Slave alternative have same weight as a master alternative.
- alternatives-update script corrects invalid manual alternatives, by switching them into auto mode. In original alternatives was situations with broken symlinks. Also new system doesnt create symlinks if target file does not exist. As a result, we also reduce number of broken symlinks.

The Ur-Quan Masters is a port of the 3DO version of the classic space game StarControl II. more>>
The Ur-Quan Masters is a port of the 3DO version of the classic space game StarControl II.

The game is currently fully playable, though it crashes or locks every now and then. The play experience is also far from perfect; many graphical and control glitches remain to be fixed.

That said, its possible to get all the way to the final battle if you save often to protect against the occasional crash.
