BeleniX 0.6.1
BeleniX is an OS distribution based on OpenSolaris codebase. more>>
BeleniX is an OS distribution based on OpenSolaris codebase. At present BeleniX is a basic LiveCD distribution that boots directly off the CD into a multiuser shell. The name BeleniX is derived after the Sun God Belenos in Celtic Mythology (Do you read Asterix ?).
This distribution includes all the OpenSolaris bits in addition to other GNU/OSS software. At present the distro only supports 32 bit x86 platforms even though OpenSolaris supports AMD64 as well. Support for booting the LiveCD with AMD64 is in the works.
Main features:
- Boots into a 32bit multiuser console login prompt. Support for GUI via Xorg and a desktop environment is coming shortly.
- UserName: root, Password: belenix
- It is based on the OpenSolaris build 20 source base.
- Since it only boots into a shell without GUI, it can run in about 200MB RAM though a minimum of 256MB is good.
- It will scan the harddisk for recognizable partitions and automatically mount them. This will Not mess with any data on the harddisk. This is basically a recovery feature.
- It will try to use physical swap if the harddisk already has a formatted Solaris partition. This helps reduce RAM usage for swap.
- It automatically starts DHCP and will configure DNS/NIS via the eventhook mechanism if the DHCP server supports it.
- It allows the user to configure the Keyboard layout via a simple UI during bootup.
- Uses a 60MB space optimised ramdisk for the root filesystem.
It includes various software packages like:
- Dan Micks prtpci script that dumps PCI info in human readable format. Somewhat like lspci in Linux.
- Casper Diks acpi, AMD powernow drivers and powernow utility for CPU frequency scaling.
- Masayuki Murayamas open source network drivers.
- Juergen Keils audio drivers for Solaris.
- Includes a Grub splash screen derived from one of Chandans excellent collection.
Includes the following GNU/OSS software:
- gcc 3.4, GNU assembler (from binutils)
- Bison, Flex
- GNU Gettext, Gmake, Gtar
- Gzip and Bzip2
- Less
- Layer 4 Traceroute (an enhanced traceroute utility)
- Libiconv, Libpcap, Ncurses
- Lynx, Vim, Wget
- Top process status utility
- GNU Screen (Terminal Multiplexor)
- The aperture driver which is required to eventually get X11 working on this distro.
- Perl 5.8.4 which comes default with OpenSolaris
- Fontconfig, Freetype2, Expat: These will be required by Xorg X11 server.
- The FreeBSD math library ported to work with OpenSolaris. This is essential for a self-hosting OpenSolaris distribution

Alphalinux 0.3.1
Alfalinux is a minidistribuition on two floppy disks much different from other similar products. more>>
Alfalinux is a minidistribuition on two floppy disks much different from other similar products: that is no non-standard/reduced or remaked system parts, no bad overformatted floppy disks, no such things like other similar mini distributions.
Alfalinux is a STANDARD portable SLACKWARE (3.5 kernel 2.0.34) on two floppy disks, a real linux that loads himself in RAM. Youll find only standard applications (ex. bash or lynx)and a "clear" system, thinked to be easily personalized such as your home system.
The basic configuration to use Alfalinux should be a 486 with at least 8 mb of ram. Please notice that with less than 12mb probably you can load only the first base floppy, without additional and networking apps stored in the second. System and personalizations
The system is divided into two floppy disks. On the first you find files for Syslinux (the linux loader), a kernel and the compressed base filesystem initrd.gz.
At the startup file the kernel mount it as root filesystem. In the second floppy there is the gzipped tar archive netdata.tgz, that contains network programs, libncurses, key layouts and many other additional system parts (not needed for the correct usage of the system). The netdata script on the second floppy create the second ramdisk mounted on /usr/bin and unpack the netdata.tgz archive in the system.
To personalize you can modify the base filesystem initrd.gz, add your parts in the netdata archive or create your new archives. You also simply copy files on the second floppy disks and modifu the netdata script, to copy files on the floppy into the system (at the boot time).
As example, if we want to modify/create the scripts for internet connection we have to update
/etc/resolv.conf
/etc/ppp/options
/etc/ppp/pap / chap-secrets
/bin/connect
/bin/chatscript
Once we have prepared the updates scripts save them on the second disk and append at the netdata script a sequence to delete and replace the old scripts with new at the startup: noe you have a personalized system every time it loads at startup from floppy.
Please remember that Alfalinux dont mount local filesystems at startup (only the floppy disks, but you can insert it write-protected) so its an absolute secure system, because is loaded into RAM memory and dont need any installation procedure.
Installation
First of all, unpack the archive (tar xvfz filename), then
from msdos/OS2/windows (more info on rawrite):
rawrite alinuz1.img a:
rawrite alinuz2.img a:
from linux:
dd if=alinuz1.img of=/dev/fd0
dd if=alinuz2.img of=/dev/fd0
Enhancements:
- added vi ,cat, pwconv & unconv, several other parts
- modularized and optimized organization on the floppyes
- included commands to handle kernel modules
- a more compact/optimized/standard filesystem organization
- you can use Alfalinux -base- on machines with only 8 mb of RAM
- plugin system-parts support: you can create your own system modules and become active developer of alfalinux!

YANOCC 1.1
YANOCC is a simple and fast webmail client which can handle POP3, SMTP, and IMAP servers. more>>
Yanocc is a Web-based e-mail reader. It uses PHP and a Web server to access
a mail server (POP3, IMAP) and send e-mail (SMTP or plain sendmail).
Yanocc is based on the source code of Nocc and is very similar with this.
Yanocc can be used as an e-mail reader and allows you to view, send messages,
manage your mail account. It can view and send MIME attachments (files, HTML,
etc.).
Yanocc has low requirements on browser, it uses JavaScript as less as
possible, nearly no frames and even works with Lynx without cookies; low
requirements on Web servers too: you dont need any superuser privileges to
install Yanocc and it can work with suEXEC (see Apache documentation) for
increased security.

Pyne 1.1.0
Pyne is an offline newsreader/emailer written in Python using the GTK+ toolkit. more>>
Pyne is an offline newsreader/emailer written in Python using the GTK+ toolkit. I started it because I wasnt happy with the graphical newsreaders available for linux. Of course, a few months later Pan and Knode started to kick arse... oh well.
Pyne 0.6.9 is for gtk1.2, and is a bit old and therefore crappy (it follows). Pyne 1.0.0 is shiny and new and for gtk2.0, and therefore great. Pyne 1.1.0 contains fixes and new features for gtk2.4+ (and mailbox formats are unchanged from 1.0.x, so you can use the two versions interchangably).
Pyne is free software and may be distributed under the terms of the GPL, etc...
Main features:
- Offline, threaded news reading and posting.
- Well... the posting is online actually but that cant be avoided. queued outgoing stuff anyway.
- SMTP sending and POP3 and IMAP4 collection of mail.
- Attachments and all that stuff.
- Simple mail/news filtering.
- Optional expiry of mail as well as news. Useful for mailing lists.
- hmm... nice graphical interface. im really scraping the barrel here...
- (Partial) support for MH mailboxes.
- Import and export unix mailbox format.
- External parsing of html messages (lynx -dump)

Balayer 0.1
Balayer is yet another web browser. more>>
Only HTML, text and images are rendered. It has the peculiarity to be entirely written in Python, though based on many C-written pieces.
The idea of it came because I like Operas way of browsing, but it is too buggy on Linux, so when I saw someone had written a HTML rendering widget with rather few dependencies, I decided to write my own web browser.
This has led me to write other software pieces that are needed to run balayer for the most part: python-gdkinput, python-cschtml, gladepyc. The latter was independant from Balayer at start, but finally I decided that Balayer would be a good demonstration for it; At the same time, I had to implement features in gladepyc to implement Balayer, so they both benefitted from each other.
Main features:
- Single window navigation: web pages are displayed in a notebook rather than in separate Windows.
- Clicking on a link displays the new page systematically in a new tab, and does not focus it automatically. This is to ease parallel loading of pages.
- Non-blocking loading: you can continue viewing pages while documents and images are loading.
- Bookmark manager: shows and manage separate bookmark trees for each supported bookmark format. No native bookmark format, it uses others. Planned: Opera, Lynx, Netscape.
- Should be quite fast and light (memory and disk footprint); At least it is on my host.

libxnm 0.1.1
libxnm project is a library for parsing and retrieving data from the XNM file format. more>>
libxnm project is a library for parsing and retrieving data from the XNM file format.
The prevailing meta-format used today for serialization is XML. XML was originally written as a markup language, and as such its original intent was to add additional information to free flowing text.
This is indeed what is needed in the context of text markup, e.g. for a web page or a word processor program. But using XML for general purpose object serialization generates very verbose serialization that are way larger than necessary.
Another shortcoming of XML is that there still is no support for binary objects. This again is partly based in its markup roots.
Main features:
- Recursively defined.
- Map to the scalar/table/hash structures of perl/python/ruby
- Not limited by preexisting language formats (JSON).
- Short, consise, visually appealing. Low signal to noise.
- No need to quote keys or one word values.
- Support binary data.
- Tables are enclosed by { } , arrays by [ ].
Examples of XNM
The following example shows a simple program configuration file:
fontsize: 16
fonts: { roman: Sans
italic: "Sans Italic"
bold: "Sans bold"
}
path: ["/usr/bin" "/bin" "/usr/local/bin"]
Here is another example copied from the wikipedia json page:
firstName: John
lastName: Smith
address: {
city: "New York, NY"
zipCode: 10021
streetAddress: "21 2nd Street"
}
phoneNumbers: [
"212 732-1234"
"646 123-4567"
]
The main (only) differences to JSON are:
Single words dont need quotes
Commas are not used between key/value pairs
Here is a third example translated from the gaim prefs file:
core => {
away => {
idle_reporting=>system
away_when_idle=>0
mins_before_way=>10
auto_reply=>awayidle
report_idle=>1
}
buddies => {}
contact => {
last_match => 0
offline_score => 2
away_score => 2
idle_score => 1
}
gaim => {
gtk=> {
browsers=> {
place=>F
command=>"xterm -e lynx %s"
browser=>firefox
new_window=>F
}
plugins => [
/usr/lib/gaim/gaimrc.so
/usr/lib/gaim/ssl-nss.so
/usr/lib/gaim/ssl.so
]
}
}

<<lessThe prevailing meta-format used today for serialization is XML.
}
path: ["/usr/bin" "/bin" "/usr/local/bin"]
Here is another example copied from the wikipedia json page:
firstName: John
lastName: Smith
address: {
city: "New York, NY"
zipCode: 10021
streetAddress: "21 2nd Street"
}
phoneNumbers: [
"212 732-1234"
"646 123-4567"
]
The main (only) differences to JSON are:
Single words dont need quotes
Commas are not used between key/value pairs
Here is a third example translated from the gaim prefs file:
core => {
away => {
idle_reporting=>system
away_when_idle=>0
mins_before_way=>10
auto_reply=>awayidle
report_idle=>1
}
buddies => {}
contact => {
last_match => 0
offline_score => 2
away_score => 2
idle_score => 1
}
gaim => {
gtk=> {
browsers=> {
place=>F
command=>"xterm -e lynx %s"
browser=>firefox
new_window=>F
}
plugins => [
/usr/lib/gaim/gaimrc.so
/usr/lib/gaim/ssl-nss.so
/usr/lib/gaim/ssl.so
]
}
}
}
Note that the separater character used between keys and values is => combination like in perl.

Salonify 0.82
Salonify is a Perl script which displays images that you have organized in a directory hierarchy. more>>
Salonify is a Perl script which displays images that you have organized in a directory hierarchy.
The Web user can choose to see photos as thumbnails or in small, medium, or full-size format; rotate the images; modify the captions; move from folder to folder or image to image easily; and customize the layout.
The administrator can also take away any of these abilities from the user if they want. By default, the captioning is totally democratic (or wiki-like)--anyone visiting your site can change the captions. You can also lock this down.
Salonify generates nearly w3c-compliant HTML (getting closer all the time) and renders quite well in all tested browsers, including w3m-img, lynx, Mozilla, Opera, Netscape, Internet Explorer, etc..
It uses JavaScript when available but does not depend on it, and makes special allowances for bugs in certain browsers.
Enhancements:
- New feature to permit visitors to download entire album as a ZIP file. See the config file for the new options, salonify_generate_static_archive_file and salonify_generate_dynamic_archive_file. The "dynamic generate" is enabled by default, but if you want to limit disk space usage, youll need a script that runs occasionally to delete the ZIP files that are created.
- If this feature is enabled, a new "download album" button will appear above the thumbnail view.
- More error checking when loading modules--try to tell user what is missing.
- More error checking when using RCS to check out files--give user option to override RCS lock on make_salonify.
- Update documentation, in particular the USAGE file.

SLAX 6.0.0 RC6
SLAX is a small bootable CD containing the Linux operating system. more>>
SLAX is a small bootable CD containing the Linux operating system. SLAX distirbution runs Linux directly from the CD (or USB) without installing.
The Live CD described here is based on the Slackware Linux distribution and is downloadable from this website as an ISO image.
The primary goal of SLAX is to provide a wide collection of useful software while keeping the cds image small enough to be written to a 185 MB CD-R(W) medium (small 8 cm CD). SLAX boots directly from the CD or USB devices and it provides a full featured Linux operating system.
All your available partitions and data storage devices (CD-ROM, USB storage devices, etc.) should be recognized at boot and should be mounted to /mnt/xx. As an example, "disc0part1" may be assigned to the first partition on your primary hard drive, "disc1part1" for your USB storage device, or "cdrom0" for your CD-ROM drive. SLAX will never write anything to the mounted devices. Mounting is safe and does not change the data.
After booting, you should be able to login as a "root", with the password "toor"; both without quotes, of course.
When logged in, you have many options. At the shell prompt, you may start Midnight Commander (type "mc" to the console), play some music from your hard drive (type "play /mnt/path/file.mp3"), adjust your audio volume (type "alsamixer"), configure IP address (type "netconfig") or browse web pages with the text-based browser (type "lynx http://url").
To start the graphical environment included with SLAX, type "gui" (for graphical user interface). It will attempt to autoconfigure your graphics card, monitor, keyboard and mice, and if successful it will run an X session with KDE. Im pretty sure that you will know how to get around at this point. :-) Use "guisafe" instead of "gui" for safe-mode (VESA framebuffer) without autodetection.
In the unfortunate case your mouse doesnt work, try to move it for a few seconds to see if it will be autodetected. If it isnt, shut down Xwindow (press Ctrl+Alt+Backspace) and start it again. If this wont help then you are using something I have not included in the autoconfiguration process (COM2 mouse?). If you are comfortable with bash, or you atleast understand how to make your favorite mouse function under Linux, try to modify the symbolic link /dev/mouse manually.
If you dont like the autoconfigured screen resolution, refresh rate, or the K Desktop Environment, start "gui" with some additional options. Try for example "gui 800x600 60", where 800x600 is the desired screen resolution and 60 is the desired refresh rate. Fluxbox is one of the other window managers included and may be called with "guifast" or "gui fluxbox". In any event, type "gui --help" for more information.
All scripts and source code are available and can be used to build your own Live CD.
SLAX is available as an ISO image of the CD. It fits on small 8cm CD-R(W). Burn it with your favorite cd-writing software and then boot from the CD.
You might want to check your BIOS to assure its set to boot the CD prior the disc.
SLAX CD contains:
- Linux Kernel 2.4.28-pre4 with SATA support
- X.org 6.8.1
- KDE 3.3.1
- KOffice 1.3.3
- KDE games
- MPlayer 1.0pre5 with KPlayer
- kopete ICQ/AIM/Y!/IRC
- midnight commander
- rdesktop (rscp in KDE)
- hotplug support
- cdrtools
- k3b burning GUI for KDE
- mutt email client
- wget
- and much more...

Monkey Linux 06
Monkey Linux is a minimal Linux ELF distribution in 7.5MB archive (5 diskettes) more>>
Monkey Linux can be extracted to the DOS filesystem (to the FAT32 too). This is complete small ELF distribution with latest kernel on 5 diskettes. Monkey can run on this minimal HW: 386SX, 4MB RAM, 30MB on IDE HDD.
Contain X Window for any SVGA videocard, support for network, support for 3C5x9, 3c59x, 3c900, NE2000/NE1000, WD80x3 ethernet cards, ATAPI/MITSUMI CD. There is some ready-to-install packages, GCC and kernel source for compiling your own kernel too.
Main features:
- minimal Linux ELF distribution in 7.5MB archive (5 diskettes)
- Monkey is small, but is not only a toy
- contain X Window
- full network support with TCP/IP and IPX/SPX
- latest Kernel with modules
- some ready-to-install packages with usefull software
- usually Linux distributions need repartition with previous full backup. With Monkey Linux you can simply extract all the files to one directory. Linux will use MSDOS FAT as well as I think (also FAT32). This allows you to experiment with Linux everywhere you want. You do not need to know anything about fdisk, ext2, bootdisk, rootdisk, etc.
- you may install any other Linux applications
- Monkey is not really complete distribution - use Slackware, RedHat, etc. (Monkey will be probably your first step...)
- X Window Xfree 3.2 (SVGA server for Trident, Cirrus, Realtek, ...)
- Fvwm95, xterm
- editors: vi, joe (Wordstar compatibile editor)
- telnet, ssh, ftp, traceroute, nslookup, Lynx, (Netscape in the installable package)
- bootpd, bootpgw, cron
- many utilities for text procesing (awk, sed, perl, ...)
- utilities for working with IPX/SPX
- support for many filesystems
