Zenwalk Linux (formerly Minislack) is a Slackware-based Linux distribution with focus on Internet applications, multimedia and programming tools.
ZenLive Linux LiveCD is a complete system with software for Internet browsing, mail, chat, multimedia and office, as well as for programming in C, Perl, Python and Ruby.
The main objectives of Zenwalk Linux are to be simple and fast, provide one application per task, be a complete development and desktop environment and to be small enough to fit on a 400MB ISO image.
Enhancements:
- ZenLive 4.2 is based on Zenwalk Linux version 4.2 and compliments the speed and stability youve come to expect from Zenwalk. Some of the new features include Zenpanel which is Zenwalks new system configuration panel that makes customizing your Linux system easy. Desktop enhancements include a new panel layout and RSS feed reader that were added to Xfce among other nice enhancements, such as the original Tango-derived icon theme. Howl has been replaced with the more modern and supported Avahi Zeroconf subsystem. Fam has been replaced with Gamin resulting in noticeable speed increases to file and directory monitoring.

Live GNU/Linux the free Knoppix as it takes the usual Knoppix from Klaus Knopper, and strips off all non-free bits and bytes. The result is a product that consists entirely of Free Software.

We hope to provide a useful Free Software resource for you. Live GNU/Linux is also meant as a live system others can base customised version on, if they want to build up a Free Software system as well.

Live GNU/Linux is based on Knoppix which itself is based on Debian GNU/Linux. Freeing the original Knoppix was developed at Intevation.

This work was only possible because Free Software experts have created all the infrastructure allowing a gigantic world-wide community of software volunteers develop what is already, without any doubt, the best operative system the world.
However, because (r)evolutions take time, many companies that are developing systems - which in the end are designed to store in practice the technological and scientific knowledge of mankind - still work in a closed form (proprietary).
There is still a reason to use other operative systems while the community of free software does not this knowledge to the whole humanity. Based on Knoppix 3.8, including kernel 2.6.11. It uses the Unionfs file system that mounts the DVD image in read-write mode. Using this feature, PAIPIX can run your 3D-enabled drivers for ATI or NVIDIA cards. Just use knoppix install=ati or knoppix install=nvidia as boot option and run the FlightGear simulator (fgfs) to see the new fantastic 3D support in Linux
Enhancements:
- The new PAIPIX 7 keeps its focus on scientific software but drops the emphasis on a pure live DVD to integrate installation, live and upgrade systems. DSS also know as Debased Scripts Set project is dedicated to providing you with a "System Development Environment" to create your own DEbian BASED Live Linux System.
Normally youre stuck with the type and amount of applications the creator decided to include, now you can customize the system to fit your needs, by generating on-the-fly compressed modules (layers) including additional software .
The idea is to dont "debase" the Default Debian System, for this pourpose has been designed the USS (The Upstream Salmon Struct).
In this way youll have a knoppix like HW autodetection and autoconfiguration flavor without affecting the standard system.
