Microdrive Live Linux 0.2
Microdrive Live Linux is a tiny little live cd system. more>>
Microdrive Live Linux is a tiny little live cd system.
Main features:
- This is basically a set of scripts which you can use to make your own live linux cd.
- It depends on busybox, isolinux and linux of course.
- I am planning to build a small bunch of diskless, monitorless, keyboardless nodes to do my rendering work [3D]. For them to run, I have various options but live cd seem to be most trouble free.
- But then I couldnt find a live cd, that more or less faithfully follows a ordinary installed linux system. They seem to use squashfs or unionfs or some other form of pseudo writable file systems. I couldnt even get the slax to show me a screen. I am sure it is to do with my laptop graphics card.
- But it sort of inspired me to make my own live cd, so I can match the components to the same library versions of my installed systems.
- To this end instead of making a single cd, I broke the work needed in to a set of scripts so that the whole thing is manageable and reusable.
- Hopefully it will be useful to someone else out there.
- Have a nice day.
- Released under GPL Do you need to ask! ."

PaiPix Linux 7.0
PaiPix Linux is a compilation of Free Software, based on KNOPPIX live linux. more>>
PaiPix Linux is a compilation of Free Software, based on KNOPPIX live linux, that is meant to be used in any environment but with special emphasis on science and technologies.
PaiPix Linux should provide an open door to the public including not only the tolls used by the scientists but also the best free applications that make your computer more interesting for any usage.
If you like it for office, video or even gaming, who knows if someday you can get curious and give a look at the scientific applications that are in your DVD.
PaiPix can be used at home, in medium and even large size organizations where the sharing of the compressed DVD image and the included afs file system support make it extreemely powerfull.
PaiPix Linux also serves to support clusters of distributed computing (using the paipix-terminalsever), for data servers, farms simulation farms and user laboratories.
PaiPix linux combines all the versatility of KNOPPIX with optimized configuration for several languages, including Portuguese. It intends to not only serve in document editing tasks but also for advanced technological and scientific systems.
Using the paipix-remaster script, you can change the default language of your iso image or add your personal files to the PAIPIX DVD.
This work was only possible because Free Software experts have created all the infrastructure allowing a gigantic world-wide community of software volunteers develop what is already, without any doubt, the best operative system the world.
However, because (r)evolutions take time, many companies that are developing systems - which in the end are designed to store in practice the technological and scientific knowledge of mankind - still work in a closed form (proprietary).
There is still a reason to use other operative systems while the community of free software does not this knowledge to the whole humanity. In the following table we include a correspondence that facilitates the migration to free software for each application. All mentioned free software is installed in PaiPix!
This software is distributed without any guarantee if not the fact that a great number of components are permanently being used and tested by millions of people in the whole world.
Based on Knoppix 3.8, including kernel 2.6.11. It uses the Unionfs file system that mounts the DVD image in read-write mode. Using this feature, PAIPIX can run your 3D-enabled drivers for ATI or NVIDIA cards. Just use knoppix install=ati or knoppix install=nvidia as boot option and run the FlightGear simulator (fgfs) to see the new fantastic 3D support in Linux
Enhancements:
- The new PAIPIX 7 keeps its focus on scientific software but drops the emphasis on a pure live DVD to integrate installation, live and upgrade systems. The new main use cases are: LIVE - starting PAIPIX in the live mode, one has access to complete system including KDE, office and development; INSTALLATION - by starting PAIPIX in the installation mode one has access to the standard Debian installer system; UPGRADE - as part of the entire system, the DVD includes a Debian CD-ROM repository that includes all necessary packages. The PAIPIX ISO images are available in English and in bilingual editions that support both English and one of the following languages: Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian and German.

Scientific Linux 5.0 Live CD/DVD
Scientific Linux is a Linux release put together by Fermilab, CERN, and various other labs and universities around the world. more>>
Scientific Linux is a Linux release put together by Fermilab, CERN, and various other labs and universities around the world. Its primary purpose is to reduce duplicated effort of the labs, and to have a common install base for the various experimenters.
The base SL distribution is basically Enterprise Linux, recompiled from source.
Our main goal for the base distribution is to have everything compatible with Enterprise, with only a few minor additions or changes. An example of of items that were added are Pine, and OpenAFS.
Our secondary goal is to allow easy customization for a site, without disturbing the Scientific Linux base. The various labs are able to add their own modifications to their own site areas. By the magic of scripts, and the anaconda installer, each site is to be able to create their own distributions with minimal effort. Or, if a users wishes, they can simply install the base SL release.
The Scientific Linux project, which rebuilds source packages for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) into a complete RHEL clone, has released a live CD/DVD edition of their latest version for the i386 and x86_64 architectures:
"The Scientific Linux Live CD/DVD is a bootable CD/DVD that runs Linux directly from CD/DVD without installing. It is based on Scientific Linux 4 It uses Unification File System (Unionfs), allowing read-only file system to behave as a writable one and SquashFS providing on-the-fly decompression that allows to store 2GB of software on a normal CD-ROM. The Live CD/DVD was built using modified scripts from Linux-Live."
Enhancements:
- Scientific Linux Live CD 5.0 has been released for i386 and x86_64 architectures. The Scientific Linux Live CD is a bootable CD that runs Scientific Linux directly from CD without installing. New feature: Live CD can be installed to local hard disk. Major software updates compared to Scientific Linux 4 Live CD: Linux kernel 2.6.18, OpenAFS client 1.4.4, X.Org 7.1, 3D desktop with Compiz and AIGLX, GNOME 2.16.0, OpenOffice.org 2.0.4, Firefox 1.5. Additional features: can be installed on USB key; can be mounted over NFS (as diskless client).

Ark Linux 2007.1
Ark Linux is a Linux distribution designed especially for desktop use. more>>
Ark Linux is a Linux distribution designed especially for desktop use, primarily for people without prior Linux experience. Ark Linuxs main goal is ease of use, and the inclusion of many tools end users will need.
Ark Linux is fully Open Source and Free Software, meaning, basically, you can freely redistribute it in both modified and unmodified form.
Enhancements:
- The Ark Linux team is pleased to announce the immediate availability of Ark Linux 2007.1, the latest version of its multi-purpose desktop operating system. Ark Linux can be used for office/school work, desktop publishing, graphics, multimedia entertainment/editing, gaming, software development, and more.
Ark Linux is very adaptable and responsive to the users needs without being overly complicated and/or bloated or difficult to install (all a basic installation takes is 3 mouse clicks). For a more customized install, use the expert mode, which makes it possible to manually set up the partitions you wish to install Ark Linux into.
There have been many more changes since the 2006.1 release - all components have been updated to current versions. For example, Ark Linux 2007.1 includes the KDE 3.5.7 desktop, the OpenOffice.org 2.2.1 office suite and the Amarok music player 1.4.7. It also includes the latest underlying technologies such as Linux kernel 2.6.22.3, glibc 2.6.1, and has been built completely with gcc 4.2.1, resulting in a faster system and quicker response times.
A new and better integrated version of the wine Windows emulator makes it possible to run more Windows applications on Linux than before.
In addition to this, hardware detection has been improved, many new drivers are included, support for encrypted wireless networks has been improved and many additional applications and games have been added to the software repository.
We also have good news for developers and OEMs: The Ark Linux build system has been extended to allow customized builds of both Ark Linux and Ark Linux Live including your packages of choice - making it easier than ever to build your own Linux distribution. All details on the new build system can be found at http://wiki.arklinux.org/index.php/Customized_Ark_Linux_CDs-.
Ark Linux 2007.1 and various add-on CDs can be downloaded at http://www.arklinux.org/. Free live support is available using the web chat at http://www.arklinux.org/content/en/Live+Support
