iRATE radio provides users with a powerful new way to find and download free, legal music online.
Users rate tracks based on their tastes. The iRATE server then selects other tracks to send to the user from a database of over 50,000 freely downloadable songs by correlating the users ratings with other users, and finding people with similar tastes.
Unlike streaming audio, iRATE saves the tracks to the users hard drive. This means that playback is smoother, without the typical problems associated with streaming media, such as high bandwidth usage.

GNU Radio 2.8
GNU Radio is a collection of software that when combined with minimal hardware, allows the construction of radios. more>>
GNU Radio is a collection of software that when combined with minimal hardware, allows the construction of radios where the actual waveforms transmitted and received are defined by software. What this means is that it turns the digital modulation schemes used in todays high performance wireless devices into software problems.
What is a Software Defined Radio?
Joe Mitola says, "A software radio is a radio whose channel modulation waveforms are defined in software. That is, waveforms are generated as sampled digital signals, converted from digital to analog via a wideband DAC and then possibly upconverted from IF to RF. The receiver, similarly, employs a wideband Analog to Digital Converter (ADC) that captures all of the channels of the software radio node. The receiver then extracts, downconverts and demodulates the channel waveform using software on a general purpose processor."
For our purposes, on the receive side, the idea is to get a wide band ADC as close to the antenna as is convenient, get the samples into something we can program, and then grind on them in software.
Enhancements:
- GNU Radio 2.6 includes sending and receiving data at up to 1Mbit/sec using GMSK. - Theres also support for the new USRP Flex 400 transceiver daughterboards.
- Handling of all daughterboards has been unified, so most apps will work without modification on any of them. For those of you interested in wireless networking, see especially gnuradio-examples/python/gmsk2. Weve got a framework in place to allow you to build and experiment with your own MACs. 2.6 includes the "null MAC". A carrier sense MAC is the next logical step.

GENeric Radio IP 1.0
GENRIP is a kernel driver (presently for Linux only) that enables you to carry ethernet frames. more>>
GENRIP is a kernel driver (presently for Linux only) that enables you to carry ethernet frames over generic low-speed/low-power serial radios, such as Microhards MHX series radios. It is intended to speed up the development cycle for those creating low-powered Embedded telemetry and SCADA devices, but may have other applications as well. Once installed, the serial radio simply appears as a network interface like this:
[root@lindev]# ./ifconfig gr0
gr0 Link encap:Generic Radio IP HWaddr 00:00:02:04:06:08
inet addr:192.168.15.1 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP RUNNING MTU:234 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:30
RX bytes:0 (0.0 b) TX bytes:0 (0.0 b)
GENRIP was originally based upon Stuart Cheshires STRIP driver, which is part of the Mobile Computing Group at Stanford Universitys Mosquitonet project. It has been radically modified since.
GENRIP was ported to this application by Lawrence Wimble of Design On Demand, Inc. Design On Demand, Inc. maintains GENRIP and hopes that youll call them if you need help with an embedded project using GENRIP (or any embedded project for that matter).
GENRIP is released for Linux under the GPL. A port to FreeBSD is planned in the near future.

RecordRadio 0.2.3
RecordRadio is a basic bash script that plugs into amarok and uses streamripper to record radio stations. more>>
RecordRadio is a basic bash script that plugs into amarok and uses streamripper to record radio stations you listen to and add the songs into your music collection.
RecordRadio script is not very sophisticated right now but it should be easy for anyone to edit or enhance.
Simply enable it as a plugin, and when you connect to any URL that starts with http:// the plugin will spawn a instance of streamripper that will record the songs and place them in subdirectories within a directory called "Music" in your home.
Five seconds after connecting to the recording has started amarok will start listening to streamrippers relay server on port 8017 so as not to use twice as much bandwidth as needed.
Because of its simplistic design it has the following shortcomings:
If you wish to change the streamripper options or the directory where things get stored you have to edit the file manually.
(This can be fixed as soon as a dcop interface is provided to preferences.)
When you start an internet radio station your playlist will be cleared.
(This can be fixed as soon as the amarok developers fix the playMedia dcop call)
There is a five second delay before everything is running.
Sometimes the server is full and cannot support an additional connection for streamripper so you cant record that station.

halo_radio is a python library for a mp3 radio station. Included is a cgi web front-end for controlling the radio stations content. also, a backend streamer for re-encoding mp3s.
The system tracks requests and kills to auto generate playlists for random song selection.
HaloRadio makes use of existing software to provide some parts of its features and functionality. For example the transport of mp3s is provided by Icecast and the backed database is provided by MySQL.
There are quite a few prerequisite applications to be installed before your streaming radio station is fully operational. While the author would like to provide installation and configuration help for all the software used in this project these issues are extensively covered by their respective maintainers.
The author suggests recent versions of all programs listed below or a nice package management system like debians apt.

Keep Listening 0.1.1
The project is a simple program using xine code from mplayer (thanks!) to download BBC Listen Again streams. more>>
The project is a simple program using xine code from mplayer (thanks!) to download BBC Listen Again streams.
Simply open the "Listen with External Real Player" links with this program and you can save the Real audio file. Play it with mplayer, vlc, or even Real Player (their linux player is actually quite good amazingly).
To build it you just need Qt 4. If it doesnt work, you might want to generate mplayers config.h for your system, and then copy it over libreal/config.h
Ive also included a binary that might possible work if you are lucky, but this is linux so it probably wont.
Anyway, enjoy! Also Mark Thomas - legend.
PS: If someone wants to make some packages that automatically do the association thing, that would be great!
PPS: Progress bar is approximate - it will take as long to download as the programme lasts.
To install, do something like:
qmake
make
sudo make install
Then (for KDE):
Go to a BBC listen again stream. Download the .ram file linked to by "Listen in External Real Player".
Right click it->properties->Type: Edit file type->Add Application->/usr/bin/keeplistening
Enhancements:
- Fixed compilation errors (kdevelop assumed absolute paths)
- Close on errors
- Added auto-close checkbox (on by default)
- Ignore lines starting with ## in ram files.

rstudio 0.6
rstudio is a GTK+ GUI that controls programs used in recording, CD mastering, and managing a SHOUTcast server. more>>
rstudio project is a GTK+ GUI that controls programs used in recording, CD mastering, and managing a SHOUTcast server.
The "Radio Station" referred to here is a Shoutcast server. Before you can play any music on the station, you need to either record your own, or use a Peer-to-Peer program or other source to download some music.
The GTK-Gnutella button starts a peer to peer fileshareing program called GTK-Gnutella where you can get a wide variety of music free.
Start Radio station starts up the shoutcast server and its source client, which feeds an mp3 playlist to the server for broadcast.
The playlist file is created when you press the "Close" button in the playlist manager. The playlist manager lets you view either the downloaded files from GTK-Gnutella, or the permanent collection of files. You can select a file, then move it to the permanent collection, only if you are viewing the downloaded files. For either set, you may delete a file, or play it.
Audacity is a very versatile recording tool that can be used to create original content, or to record from other sources, such as a Shoutcast.com station, (or even your own shoutcast station).
Shoutcast.com button starts firefox, with the url of http://www.shoutcast.com so that you may listen to other shoutcast stations, or your own.
Kill XMMS stops any running xmms.
Quit exits rstudio.
GTK-Gnutella starts the P-2-P filesharing system.
K3B can be used to master audio CDs, or even mp3 data CDs that can be played on an mp3-compatible cd player or dvd player.
Enhancements:
- A shuffle playlist button was added.
- The audio player was changed to Audacious since Gentoo does not support XMMS.
- This version was tested on Gentoo AMD64 and Kubuntu 386.
