The gzip Recovery Toolkit attempts to automate the recovery of data from corrupted gzip files (including tarballs) through a program called gzrecover. gzip Recovery Toolkit package is still very experimental at this point.
99% of "corrupted" gzip archives are caused by transferring the file via FTP in ASCII mode instead of binary mode. Please re-transfer the file in the correct mode first before attempting to recover from a file you believe is corrupted.
This program is provided AS IS with absolutely NO WARRANTY. It is not guaranteed to recover anything from your file, nor is what it does recover guaranteed to be good data. The bigger your file, the more likely that something will be extracted from it. Also keep in mind that this program gets faked out and is likely to "recover" some bad data. Everything should be manually verified.
Usage:
Run gzrecover on a corrupted .gz file. Anything that can be read from the file will be written to a file with the same name, but with a .recovered appended (any .gz is stripped). You can override this with the -o option.
To get a verbose readout of exactly where gzrecover is finding bad bytes, use the -v option to enable verbose mode. This will probably overflow your screen with text so best to redirect output to a file.
Once gzrecover has finished, you will need to manually verify any data recovered as it is quite likely that our output file is corrupt and has some garbage data in it. If your archive is a tarball, read on.
For tarballs, the tar program will choke because GNU tar cannot handle errors in the file format. Fortunately, GNU cpio (tested at version 2.5 or higher) handles corrupted files out of the box.
Heres an example:
$ ls *.gz
my-corrupted-backup.tar.gz
$ gzrecover my-corrupted-backup.tar.gz
$ ls *.recovered
my-corrupted-backup.tar.recovered
$ cpio -F my-corrupted-backup.tar.recovered -i -v
If you have a previous release, please note that the patches to GNU tar have been discontinued. They were only marginally successful at best and GNU cpio does what is needed out of the box and does it far better.
Enhancements:
- Documentation updates, including a man page, plus code cleanup to better enable inclusion in GNU/Linux packages and eliminate compilation warnings.

LiMP is a a tiny LIVE CD based linux distro, that loads into memory and works only in the memory. This is the easiest, simpler yet powerful distro that works in all computers (PIII onwards).
Linux Multimedia Player supports most of the known formats, let it be mpeg-I, or mpeg-II, or divx, or wmv,qt-mov,real video for video and for audio mp3,wav,wma, ogg, real audio. It has the auto detection of partitions (ide or sata or scsi), sound cards,video cards, network cards and supports all the the cards as of kernel 2.6.13. It identifies the Partitions and mounts in the folder START.

LiMP distro runs only from memory and so CDROM/DVD is free to use. LiMP is completely safe to use as it mounts the partitions (NTFS, EXT2, EXT3, REISERFS) and windows / linux shares in READONLY mode.

The intention is to boot any PC with USB support with our system and therefore we will have every administration and analysis applications that we have selected, so we will not need install it. This way, always we will be able to get our Linux system ready to use in our pocket.
This project arose with the intention to study the Linux system of exhaustive way and simultaneously enjoy with it. The initial idea is to fuse two separated disciplines: the programming and the systems management. So well center our study in the denominated "system programming, as much networking level as at device level (drivers).

The main idea is to carry all the potency of Linux and our tools in our own pockets, ready to be used.

Crash Recovery for Linux sounds a bit superfluous. Linux is regarded as one of todays most stable Operating Systems. In the case of some hardware failure like a broken disk it can however be handy.
Of course your machine doesnt have to have linux installed to make use of the CRK kit. There are several uses and purposes for the CRK to be used. To name a few :
- recovery of a trashed LILO boot record. How many times does it happen that some person installs windows 98/95 after he/she installed linux? Well in that case windows 9X just overwrites the MBR record and linux wont be able to boot anymore.
- backup over the network in the form of tar.gz tarballs. Both FAT16, FAT32, ext2 and all filesystems which Linux supports in a read/write fashion can be taken care of. The strong part of the CRK is when a disk is replaced or repartitioning is being done. The CRK boots a complete mini linux with networking where all possible hardware which is inside the Linux kernel is available.
- Testing hardware of new intel based machines.
- Detecting versions and types of hardware. The Linux kernel holds a large database of hardware supported. Booting a linux kernel doesnt only resolve if the hardware is ok, it also show its specs. This can be handy if one wants to check-out an old/new PC which is for sale.
- Recovery of a misconfigured or hacked Linux system. Well that can happen. /etc/fstab can be wrong or the root password is unknown etc.
- make a tape backup of a disk which cant be booted anymore.
The CRK is based on RedHat Linux. I have always used RedHat systems, thats why. When my system needed maintenance the rescue floppy image which RedHat supplies didnt fullfill my needs.
Thats why i created the CRK. Lately i use Mandrake. How and why the CRK was created read the short history. The CRK is licensed under the GNU Public License (GPL).

Make CD-ROM Recovery makes a bootable (El Torito) disaster recovery image (CDrec.iso), including backups of the linux system to the same CD-ROM (or CD-RW) if space permits, or to a multi-volume CD-ROM set. Otherwise, the backups can be stored on another local disk, NFS disk or (remote) tape.

After a disaster (disk crash or system intrusion) the system can be booted from the CD-ROM and one can restore the complete system as it was (at the time mkCDrec was run) with the command /etc/recovery/start-restore.sh

Disk cloning (clone-dsk.sh script) allows one to restore a disk to another disk (the destination disk does not have to be of the same size as it calculates the partition layout itself). A thrid script, restore-fs.sh, will restore only one filesystem to a partition of your choice, and the user can choose with which filesystem the partition has to be formatted.

Linux 2.2.x, 2.4.x and 2.6.x kernels are supported, and if size of the kernel is not too big a boot floppy can be made, otherwise a 2.88 Mb boot floppy will be emulated on CD-ROM.

MkCDrec supports ext2 , ext3, minix, xfs , jfs, reiserfs file systems, LVM and software RAID (multiple devices). Each file system is backed up as a compressed tar archive (including the tar log). The compress program used is the users choice (compress, gzip, bzip2, lzop,...)

But there is more: msdos, fat, vfat and ntfs mounted partitions are recognized and are saved as compressed dumps (on CD, tape, etc.)
The user has the possibility to encrypt all backups with openssl if desired (see the Config.sh configuration file for more information).

To restore your system completely just boot from the first CD-ROM made by mkCDrec and type "/etc/recovery/start-restore.sh " to restore everything from CD. Automatic Disaster Recovery and One Button Disaster Recovery are supported by mkCDrec too.
With the clone-dsk.sh script one can restore selective a disk or partitions to another free disk.

mkCDrec supports IDE (inclusive ATA), SCSI disks, hardware RAID based disks (e.g. Compaq SMART2 Disk Array), LVM and software RAID. With an El-Torito CD-ROM you can boot from an IDE or SCSI based CD-ROM drive on IA32/64, powermac and x86_64 GNU/Linux based computer systems only.

Recover is a utility which automates some steps as described in the Ext2fs-Undeletion howto in order to recover a lost file.
Recover (ie. console version) is no longer under active development since bug reports have become rare (thus stable), newer and better FSs are coming up and I dont really know how recover could be improved. (suggestions are still welcome!)
If you want to undelete files on a non-ext2 linux partition, you should try it the UNIX-way!
Recover automates some steps as described in the ext2-undeletion howto. This means it seeks all the deleted inodes on your hard drive with debugfs. When all the inodes are indexed, recover asks you some questions about the deleted file. These questions are:
- Hard disk device name
- Year of deletion
- Month of deletion
- Weekday of deletion
- First/Last possible day of month
- Min/Max possible file size
- Min/Max possible deletion hour
- Min/Max possible deletion minute
- User ID of the deleted file
- A text string the file included (can be ignored)
If recover found any fitting inodes, he asks to give a directory name and dumps the inodes into the directory. Finally he asks you if you want to filter the inodes again (in case you typed some wrong answers).
We hope you will never need recover, but in case, its better to install this program anyway. Once a file is deleted, everytime something is written to disk, theres a change it will overwrite the old deleted file. You will never be able to restore it.

Ext2 compression extension (E2compr) is a small patch against the ext2 filesystem that allows on-the-fly compression and decompression. It compresses only regular files; the administrative data (superblock, inodes, directory files etc.) are not compressed (mainly for safety reasons).
Access to compressed blocks is provided for read and write operations. The compression algorithm and cluster size (see section Clusters) is specified on a per-file basis. Directories can also be marked for compression, in which case every newly created file in the directory will be automatically compressed with the same cluster size and the same algorithm that was specified for the directory.
E2compr is not a new filesystem. It is only a patch to the ext2 filesystem made to support the EXT2_COMPR_FL flag. It does not require you to make a new partition, and will continue to read or write existing ext2 filesystems. You should consider it is only a way for the read and write routines to access files that could have been created by a simple utility similar to gzip or compress. Compressed and uncompressed files will coexist nicely on your ext2 partitions.
Usage
Basically, a file is compressed with the command `chattr +c filename, and decompressed with the command `chattr -c filename. You can also do `chattr +c (etc.) on a directory. The directory itself wont be compressed, but any new files created in that directory inherit that directorys compress flag and compression algorithm and cluster size.(1)
Use lsattr to see if a file should be compressed or not, and to see what compression algorithm and cluster size will be used.
Use e2ratio to see how much disk space is used by the compressed form compared to the uncompressed form.
You can also try the `-u or `-r options to lsattr. (The difference is that, for directories, e2ratio finds the disk usage of the whole directory tree, like du, whereas `lsattr -u only shows the space taken by the directory file, like `ls -s.)
Enhancements:
- kernel 2.4.26 and 2.6.18.5 patch sets.
- Allows repeated compress/decompress cycles.
- The ability to compile within a compressed directory tree.
- This release corrects small file sizes and fixes all known GPFs.
- It removes compiler warning messages and regularizes debug output.

GNU ddrescue is a data recovery tool. GNU ddrescue copies data from one file or block device (cdrom, hard disc, etc) to another, trying hard to rescue data in case of read errors.
Ddrescue does not truncate the output file if not asked to. So, every time you run it on the same output file, it tries to fill in the gaps.
The basic operation of ddrescue is fully automatic. That is, you dont have to wait for an error, stop the program, read the log, run it in reverse mode, etc.
If you use the logfile feature of ddrescue, the data is rescued very efficiently (only the needed blocks are read). Also you can interrupt the rescue at any time and resume it later at the same point.
Automatic merging of backups: If you have two or more damaged copies of a file, cdrom, etc, and run ddrescue on all of them, one at a time, with the same output file, you will probably obtain a complete and error-free file.
This is so because the probability of having damaged areas at the same places on different input files is very low. Using the logfile, only the needed blocks are read from the second and successive copies.
The logfile is periodically saved to disc. So in case of a crash you can resume the rescue with little recopying.
Also, the same logfile can be used for multiple commands that copy different areas of the file, and for multiple recovery attempts over different subsets.
Ddrescue aligns its I/O buffer to the sector size so that it can be used to read from raw devices. For efficiency reasons, also aligns it to the memory page size if page size is a multiple of sector size.
Whats New in 1.5 Stable Release:
