Kate Linux 3.0 Alpha1

Kate Linux 3.0 Alpha1

Kate OS is a multitasking operating system from Poland. more>>

The complexity of installed software makes using the system comfortable, immediately after the installation process. Looking for a perfect solution for the experienced UNIX user? Kate OS is perhaps the best one.
Kate OS combines advantages of all these system types. The installation and configuration process of Kate OS is not as simple as in desktop distributions, but the stability and efficiency are incomparably higher.
The new version contains many improvements and modifications over Kate 1.0. The system has been reconstructed from the ground up and is no longer based on Slackware. Kate OS became much more comprehensive, now it contains greater set of programs and libraries.
Applications, which have been added to simplify your work, are:

- Thunderbird- mail client;
- GNU Gadu 2- program working with Gadu-Gadu and Tlen.pl;
Desktop Enviroment- Xfce 4.2 adds some fresh impressions and possibly will satisfy each user. System also contains Aspell and Ispell dictionaries. Kate 2.0 has an extended system of packages, TGZex, which has been adapted for remote actualization.

System supports the solution called "supermount", which frees the user from manually mounting and unmounting removable media. To enable this option, you should just uncomment proper lines in /etc/fstab.
And whats the most important thing? The system has acquired a new effectiveness through Kernels 2.6 infrastructure. Kate 2.0 ZYKLON is a perfect solution for desktop and server, you may enter the world of many recent technologies used in Linux. Reveal their power!

Linux trustees 3.0

Linux trustees 3.0

Linux trustees is an advanced file permission system for Linux more>>
The main goal of the Linux Trustees project is to create an advanced permission management system for Linux. The solution proposed is mainly inspired by the approach taken by Novell Netware and the Java security API.

Special objects (called trustees) can be bound to every file or directory. The trustee object can be used to ensure that access to a file, directory, or directory with subdirectories is granted (or denied) to a certain user or group (or all except user or group).

Trustees are like POSIX ACLs, but trustee objects can affect entire subdirectory trees, while ACLs a single file. Trustees works with the 2.6 Linux kernel.

Universal Instant Messenger with Instant Media Sharing: MSN-Yahoo!-AIM-ICQ-Gtalk-Jabber-IRC. Stream unlimited music and share photos/files with anyone, instantly, no uploading. Plus 4-way video & 8-wa more>>

Qnext is the world?s first Universal Instant Media Messenger: a messenger that makes sharing photos and files and streaming music with friends as easy as sending a message. Start by importing your accounts from MSN, Yahoo, AIM, ICQ, Google Talk, IRC and Jabber (multiple accounts per network supported).your Hotmail, Yahoo Mail, GMail, AIM Mail, and .mac address books. Once your buddy list is complete, you can send and receive messages and files like you?re used to. But messages and files are just the beginning. By simply dragging and dropping as many files or folders of your music or photos into an open conversation window you can instantly stream that content with your friends. They will automatically receive a web link in a message that will take them to a webpage where they can listen to you music and playlists, or run a slideshow and download your photos! And you didn?t have to do anything more than drag a folder into a window and click ?share?. Qnext has many features that you won?t find anywhere else, for example: multi-network group chat. That?s right, a Qnext user can host a chat with friends from multiple different networks, and they can even talk to each other! You, your MSN buddy, and your AIM friend can all share a single conversation. Try dropping some music or photos into the chat, everyone will get the link! Convince a couple friends to use Qnext as well and you?ll be amazed at what Qnext users can do with each other: 4-way video chat, 8-way audio chat, multiplayer games, and secure file transfers of any size! Qnext also has a built-in Remote PC Access and Application Sharing tool called Qnext MyPC: Access your desktop from anywhere in the world as if you were sitting right in front of your computer.

Requirements: 512MB+ RAM, 800MHz+ CPU

Whats new in this version: Google Talk, Jabber and file transfers to any network are now supported. Music, photos, and files can now be shared just by dragging content into any open IM window.

easys GNU/Linux 3.0

easys GNU/Linux 3.0

easys GNU/Linux 2.1 is a Slackware-based distribution with KDE Light and formerly known as more>>
easys GNU/Linux was formerly known as "pocketlinux".
easys GNU/Linux main aims are to be small, fast and easy to use. If you think your live isnt slacked, yet, give this one a try.
easys GNU/Linux is a Slackware-based distribution developed by former developers of the now-discontinued Bonzai Linux.
easys GNU/Linux has a different approach then most other distributions. We want to build up a version of linux you can count on, and you can do your daily work with.
In the past 10 years in computer business I have noticed that most users only need a few applications (f.e. a texteditor, a spreadsheet, a browser or an email client). Current Desktop Environemnts like KDE offer a lot more. But can you tell me WHO really needs 3 different texteditors? So we slimmed it all down a bit. And thats what pocketlinux is about. We do not offer any administration frontends for deep system tweeks, as we think a "normal" user should not touch these things. Experienced Users can use the on board administration tools that come with the Slackware core. (Of course, if you really want to change any hardware specific settings like your monitor resolution, feel free to ask someone in the forum).
We only offer 1 application per task, so there is only one texteditor visible for the end user. (Please note that the kde-light environment is based on a complete KDE version, so most of the KDE application are onboard, too. But they are not visible to the end user per default.)
So we took a look at other installers and noticed the "shell script" based Slackware installer. The only thing we do not like about it is that its not i18n-able. So we took some time to customize the installer to be able to write back a complete tar archive on nearly any harddrive. We added i18n support (English and German right now. We are still looking for translators) and modified the kernel installation.
Enhancements:
- We are proud to present the next generation of the easys GNU/Linux operating system. The OS is now based on Slackware Linux 11.0 which comes with full kernel 2.6 support, including udev for device initialization. Kernel 2.6.17.13 is the default for a fresh installation. Besides current versions of glibc (2.3.6), GCC (3.4.6) and X.Org 6.9.0, we have included a full version of KDE 3.5.4 instead of KDE light. It has been optimized for easier usage including one application per task and a fresh enterprise GUI design called waveline. Kiosktool and KDE Kiosk Mode can be used to create user and group policies which allows you to easily setup internet kiosks or locked down workstations.

Enblend for Linux 3.0

Enblend for Linux 3.0

Enblend is a tool for composing images. more>> Enblend is a tool for composing images. Given a set of images that overlap in some irregular way, Enblend overlays them in such a way that the seam between the images is invisible, or at least very difficult to see.
Enblend does not line up the images for you - youll need a tool such as Hugin for that soecific type of job.
Features:
New, faster image processing algorithms for computing Gaussian and Laplacian pyramids.
Optional optimization of seam line placement to try to avoid mismatches and parallax errors in the image overlap region.
Masks can now be saved and loaded from files. This makes it possible to manually edit the location of the seam before multiresolution spline blending is applied.
Checkpointing of partial results is now optional. This improves speed.
Optional blending using the CIECAM02 color appearance model. Your TIFF files should have embedded ICC profiles in order to use this option. This replaces the CIE L*a*b* color blending in Enblend 2.X that never worked properly.
Optional use of the graphics processor to speed up certain computations. This feature is experimental and may not work on all systems.
Like other X.0 releases, please consider this a beta.

Linux Mint 3.0 (Cassandra)

Linux Mint 3.0 (Cassandra)

Linux Mints purpose is to produce an elegant, up to date and comfortable GNU/Linux desktop distribution. more>>
Linux Mints purpose is to produce an elegant, up to date and comfortable GNU/Linux desktop distribution.
Is Linux Mint suitable for companies?
Yes. Linux Mint offers paid commercial support to companies and individuals. Free community support is also available from the forums and the IRC channel. The main purpose of Linux Mint is to innovate and constantly bring the best desktop solutions to its users. For this reason, the release cycle is fast and a new version of Linux Mint can be released every month or every two months. All released versions of Linux Mint are actively supported and some of the releases (possibly Bianca or Cassandra) will come with a Long Term Support guarantee (a guarantee that our Support Center will support these releases for the years to come).
Is Linux Mint suitable for individuals?
Yes, definitely. We believe Linux is the best operating system on the market. There are more than 300 active Linux distributions and were working hard at becoming the best alternative for your desktop. This is a tough competition as there are other great desktop operating systems and distributions out there. We have faith in the quality of our desktop and a lot of great ideas. If your computer is a PC and you have more than 512MB RAM you should try Linux Mint and see what you think about it. If youre running a 5 years old non-free operating system such as Microsoft Windows XP you should definitely be impressed. We like hearing about your experience and taking your suggestions onboard so please give us your feedback.
Why is there a Light Edition and a Full Edition?
Linux Mint respects the GPL and it also respects the copyrights and licenses of the proprietary software it distributes. However it uses technologies that have been patented in some parts of the World. Most countries do not recognize the legitimacy of software patents so for most of our users this is not a problem. But if youre unlucky and you live in a country where software patents are legally enforcable, you need a version of Linux Mint which is free of patented technologies, and this is what the Light Edition is about.
Why does Linux Mint include proprietary drivers?
It doesnt. If it did, it would be legally wrong (because it would violate the GPL) or ethically wrong (if some dirty trick was used for the user to link the code to the kernel for instance).
What about proprietary software?
We believe in open source and release all our work with the corresponding source code. We owe a lot to the Free Software movement and to the GPL but we also owe a lot to all the developers who contributed ideas and tools and who made software better and better throughout the years. Some of them released their source code as well and thus granted us more freedom and more flexibility. Others released their software with proprietary licenses and although this didnt give us the freedom we would have liked it still contributed to make software better. We like Software in general, Free Software even more, but we do not believe in boycotting Proprietary Software.
Enhancements:
- The brand new "mintInstall" and the "Linux Mint Software Portal": http://www.linuxmint.com/software
- Gnome 2.18 (speed improvements)
- Kernel 2.6.20 (better hardware support)
- Ubuntu Feisty innovations (restricted-manager, desktop-effects, windows migration assistant, avahi)
- OpenOffice 2.2 (complete suite)
- Thunderbird replaces Evolution as the default email reader
- Pidgin replaces Gaim as the default messenger
- Sunbird is now installed by default
- The Gimp is installed by default
- Gnome-control-center replaces mintConfig as the default control center application
- Both mintDisk (for internal drives) and NTFS-Config (for external drives) are present for NTFS support
- Support for Gnome Templates in mintDesktop
- mintInstall replaces gnome-app-install and the upcoming Clickn Run.
- Drag & Drop support in mintMenu with many other improvements
- Sun Java 6 replaces Sun Java 5
- Compiz, Beryl and Emerald installed by default
