asmem 1.12

asmem 1.12

asmem is a memory utilization monitor. more>>
asmem is a memory utilization monitor.
This is an AfterStep look & feel memory utilization monitor for X Windows.
I used this asmem tool written by alinden netcologne.de for quite a while. It served the purpose but I was very unsatisfied with its appearance. I wanted something that would fit nicely between all other applets on my desktop. I tried to contact the author a few times but got no answer. So I decided to rewrite it from scratch and give it the look and options that I personally like. I hope the author of
the original asmem will not be too angry with me.
The display consists of two areas. The one above shows utilization of the memory, the one below - the utilization of the swap space. Each area contains a graphical bar that represents the percentage of the available space. For the memory utilization
there are three bars: user/system memory used, buffer memory and cache memory. For the swap space only one bar showing the used space. Above each bar is the total amount of space, below the bar - the available space in kbytes and percents. If the
memory amount is above 999999 kbytes the displays switches to Mbytes instead of kbytes.
The program may be used directly or in the Afterstep "wharf". It also supports the WindowMaker docker (-withdrawn option). It may be used in all other window managers as well. It runs well as an icon.
You may want to have a look in the CHANGES file for the history of updates.
Enhancements:
- The last release was missing a return type for one of the functions, basically making the whole update worthless.
- Now it is fixed properly.
- There are a couple of small changes here and there.

CookieSwap 0.5.0

CookieSwap 0.5.0

CookieSwap provides an extension that enables you to maintain numerous sets or profiles of cookies that you can quickly. more>>
CookieSwap provides an extension that enables you to maintain numerous sets or profiles of cookies that you can quickly.
Main features:
- Changing your cookies/identity to web e-mail sites (like Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, etc) so that you can quickly look like different users. Nice if you maintain multiple accounts and are tired of logging out and then back in to switch accounts. Also nice if two people are using the same computer and want to switch between accounts quickly.
- Changing your cookies/identity to see how sites like Amazon and Google treat you differently depending on who you are. For example, if Amazon recognizes you as a returning shopper they give you a different looking page (and there were claims that they give you different prices also). Google has begun to use a feature called "Personalized Search", where they modify their search results based on your user identity. There is a question about this when you create your Google account. The results of Google searches are different depending on if Google knows you or not. Use CookieSwap to quickly swap between Google recognizing you and being anonymous. Run the same search and see the differences.
- If you design web sites, you can setup numerous cookie profiles to look like different types of users and swap between those users quickly and easily to test your site in numerous modes (you can hand edit the cookies to have distinct values in each profile using a nice extension like Add & Edit Cookies).

asMon 0.7

asMon 0.7

asMon is a system monitor for Linux systems running afterstep, but should work on other window managers, too. more>>
asMon is a system monitor for Linux systems running afterstep, but should work on other window managers, too. I got fed up with most other wharf system monitors that didnt show the correct memory usage, and took up too much CPU. asmon also shows the exact amount of memory used and load avg by the numbers. The CPU bar is fairly standard, next to it is the current load average.
The second bar is memory usage, taken as a whole, it represent the amount of memory used. The area before the first tick represents shared memory, the area between the two ticks is buffered memory, the area from the second tick to the end of the bar represents cached memory.
The number to the right represents the number of megs currently being used. The third bar represents the amount of swap file used, and the exact number of megs the swap is using. The bottom right is are page/swap LEDs taken from wmsysmon. The right is uptime. The original program is based off of Timecops wmcpu.
Enhancements:
- After many years, another release has arrived. This time with Kernel 2.6 support and a bunch of bug fixes.

cryptoswap 0.0.3

cryptoswap 0.0.3

The cryptoswap package supports building an encrypted swap partition when a system boots. more>>
The cryptoswap package supports building an encrypted swap partition when a system boots. This must be necessary on systems that use encrypted filesystems because plaintext secrets may be written to disk when memory is swapped to disk.
Cryptoswap.sh should be installed in /etc/init.d. During system boot, cryptoswap.sh should execute right before checkroot.sh. When shutting down, cryptoswap should execute after sysklogd.
This package also includes an initialization script for building loopback encrypted /tmp. This may be necessary if a system contains encrypted filesystems but / is not encrypted. A link from directories like /var/tmp to /tmp may be appropriate. There are a few other alternatives for systems such as these:
1. Tmpfs is a Linux kernel feature that allows /tmp to exist in memory. This is a good solution for systems with a lot of memory and/or (encrypted) swap.
2. If you have a system that uses encrypted home directories, per-user temporary directories inside $HOME could be used. This would ensure that users data is protected but would require that all applications use $HOME/tmp instead of /tmp.
Finally, the project may be used to create an encrypted root filesystem. Doing so requires two special partitions. First, create a small partition to hold your kernel and initrd image, /dev/hdaX. Second create a large partition to contain the root of your filesystem, /dev/hdaY.
Next configure and install an initrd-based boot system:
1. Ensure romfs is compiled in your kernel (not a module).
2. Create a kernel-supported filesystem on /dev/hdaX and copy your kernel to /vmlinux.
3. Download busybox and extract it as initrd/busybox.
4. Update initrd/src/etc/modules.initrd to include any modules needed to boot.
5. Build cryptoswaps initrd image (cd initrd && make initrd) and copy it to the filesystem on /dev/hdaX at /initrd.img.gz.
6. Make sure you use literal = "root=/dev/ram0 init=/linuxrc rw" or LILO equivalent.
Finally, create a proper encrypted filesystem on /dev/hdaY:
1. Randomize the partition: dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/hdaY.
2. Set up a loopback device: openssl enc -d -aes-256-ecb -in initrd/src/etc/efsk | losetup -p0 -e aes /dev/loop0 /dev/hdaY.
3. Create the root filesystem: mkfs.ext2 /dev/loop0.
4. Mount your new root filesystem: mount /dev/loop0 .
5. Populate your new root filesystem.
Enhancements:
- Added initrd build environment.
- Documentation update.

Suspend2 2.2

Suspend2 2.2

Suspend2 allows you to hibernate your machine without needing APM, BIOS, or ACPI support. more>>
Suspend2 allows you to hibernate your machine without needing APM, BIOS, or ACPI support.
Suspend2 creates an image that is saved in your active swap partitions, swap files, ordinary files or (soon) across a network.
At the next system boot, the kernel detects the saved image, restores the memory from it and then it continues to run as if youd never powered down.
Enhancements:
- Since 2.2-rc12, there have been further bug fixes and a few enhancements.
- The software is now in feature freeze, getting prepared for seeking to merge into the vanilla kernel.

SysUsage 2.4

SysUsage 2.4

SysUsage is a system monitoring and alarm reporting tool. more>>
SysUsage is a system monitoring and alarm reporting tool. The project can generate historical graph views of CPU, memory, IO, network and disk usage, and much more.
Main features:
- Load average.
- CPUs usage. (total, system, user, iowait, idle, steal)
- Memory usage (with and without cache).
- Share memory usage (POSIX /dev/shm).
- Swap usage.
- Page swapping.
- Page I/O stats.
- R/W request stats.
- R/W block stats.
- Created process per second.
- Percentage of open file regarding to file-max.
- Number of socket in use. With TCP versus UDP.
- Any active network interface usage.
- Errors on network interface (bad packet, dropping, collision.
- Any mounted partition disk space usage.
- Monitoring running process.
- Monitoring number of file in queue directory.
USAGE
Once you have correctly installed and configured SysUsage the best way to run it is by croni job. As it is very fast you can set running time each minute. This is the default interval used in the graph report tool sysusagegraph. So I recommand you to do so or to modify this script to match you interval.
Here is how I use it with an installation with all path by default :
*/1 * * * * /INSTALL_DIR/sysusage
*/5 * * * * /INSTALL_DIR/sysusagegraph
If you have change the default installation path (/usr/local/sysusage) you need to give these script the path to the configuration into the command line argument using -c option. To know what arguments can be passed use option -h or --help.

Steel Bank Common Lisp 1.0.8

Steel Bank Common Lisp 1.0.8

Steel Bank Common Lisp is a common Lisp native compiler. more>>
Steel Bank Common Lisp is a development environment for Common Lisp, with excellent support for the ANSI standard: garbage collection, lexical closures, powerful macros, strong dynamic typing, incremental compilation, and the famous Common Lisp Object System (multimethods and all).

Steel Bank Common Lisp also includes many extensions, such as native threads, socket support, a statistical profiler, programmable streams, and more. These are all available through an integrated, interactive native compiler which feels like an interpreter.

SBCL is unique in being a multiplatform native compiler which bootstraps itself completely from source, using a C compiler and any other ANSI Common Lisp implementation.

Whats New in This Release:

* enhancement: experimental macro SB-EXT:COMPARE-AND-SWAP provides
atomic compare-and-swap operations on threaded platforms.
* enhancement: experimental function SB-EXT:RESTRICT-COMPILER-POLICY
allows assining a global minimum value to optimization qualities
(overriding proclamations and declarations).
* enhancement: closed over variables can be stack-allocated on x86
and x86-64.
* performance bug fix: GETHASH and (SETF GETHASH) are once again
non-consing.
* optimization: slot definition lookup is now O(1). This speeds up
eg. SLOT-VALUE and (SETF SLOT-VALUE) with variable slot names.
* optimization: STRING-TO-OCTETS is now up to 60% faster for UTF-8.
* optimization: ASSOC and MEMBER can now be open-coded for all
combinations of keyword arguments when second argument is constant
and SPEED >= SPACE. In other cases a specialized version is
selected.
* bug fix: using obsoleted structure instances with TYPEP and
generic functions now signals a sensible error.
* bug fix: threads waiting on GET-FOREGROUND can be interrupted.
(reported by Kristoffer Kvello)
* bug fix: backtrace construction is now more careful when making
lisp-objects from pointers on the stack, to avoid creating bogus
objects that can be seen by the GC.
* bug fix: defaulting of values in contexts expecting more than 7
variables now works on x86-64. (reported by Christopher Laux)
* bug fix: modifications to packages (INTERN, EXPORT, etc) are now
thread safe.
* bug fix: (SETF SYMBOL-PLIST) no longer allows assigning a non-list
as the property-list of a symbol.
* bug fix: DEFMETHOD forms with CALL-NEXT-METHOD in the method body,
in EVAL-WHEN forms with both :COMPILE-TOPLEVEL and :LOAD-TOPLEVEL
situations requested, are once again file-compileable. (reported
by Sascha Wilde)

sysfence 0.16

sysfence 0.16

sysfence is a system resources guard for Linux. more>>
Sysfence project is a resource monitoring tool designed for Linux machines. While running as daemon it checks resource levels and makes desired action if some values exceed safety limits.
Main features:
- notifying system administrators when something goes wrong,
- stopping services when system performance is dropping too low and starting them when its going up again,
- periodically restarting memory-leaking processes,
- dumping system statistics in critical situations
Usage
Sysfence reads its configuration from file(s) specified in argument list. Config files may contain one or more rules describing conditions and actions to be performed.
Rule has syntax like this:
if {
resource1 > limit1
or
{ resource2 < limit2 and resource3 < limit3 }
}
run once command-to-be-run
The block enclosed within {} brackets describes condition. When its result is TRUE, following command is invoked.
The once keyword is optional. If present, the command is executed only once after condition becomes TRUE. Next execution will take place only if condition becomes FALSE and then TRUE again. Without once keyword, command is invoked periodically, after every resource check that gives TRUE, no matter what was the condition result before.
Command specified right after run keyword is passed to /bin/sh, so it may contain more than one instruction or even whole script. But be careful - rule checking is suspended unless command execution has been completed! (Other rules are unaffected.)
As resources, following ones can be given:
- la1 - load average during last minute.
- la5 - load average during last 5 minutes.
- la15 - load average during last 15 minutes.
- memfree - lower limit for free memory amount.
- memused - upper limit for memory used by processes.
- swapfree - lower limit for free swap space.
- swapused - upper limit for swap space in use.
Enhancements:
- This release contains bugfix for wrong memory levels recognition on non-vanilla kernels.

BeleniX 0.6.1

BeleniX 0.6.1

BeleniX is an OS distribution based on OpenSolaris codebase. more>>
BeleniX is an OS distribution based on OpenSolaris codebase. At present BeleniX is a basic LiveCD distribution that boots directly off the CD into a multiuser shell. The name BeleniX is derived after the Sun God Belenos in Celtic Mythology (Do you read Asterix ?).
This distribution includes all the OpenSolaris bits in addition to other GNU/OSS software. At present the distro only supports 32 bit x86 platforms even though OpenSolaris supports AMD64 as well. Support for booting the LiveCD with AMD64 is in the works.
Main features:
- Boots into a 32bit multiuser console login prompt. Support for GUI via Xorg and a desktop environment is coming shortly.
- UserName: root, Password: belenix
- It is based on the OpenSolaris build 20 source base.
- Since it only boots into a shell without GUI, it can run in about 200MB RAM though a minimum of 256MB is good.
- It will scan the harddisk for recognizable partitions and automatically mount them. This will Not mess with any data on the harddisk. This is basically a recovery feature.
- It will try to use physical swap if the harddisk already has a formatted Solaris partition. This helps reduce RAM usage for swap.
- It automatically starts DHCP and will configure DNS/NIS via the eventhook mechanism if the DHCP server supports it.
- It allows the user to configure the Keyboard layout via a simple UI during bootup.
- Uses a 60MB space optimised ramdisk for the root filesystem.
It includes various software packages like:
- Dan Micks prtpci script that dumps PCI info in human readable format. Somewhat like lspci in Linux.
- Casper Diks acpi, AMD powernow drivers and powernow utility for CPU frequency scaling.
- Masayuki Murayamas open source network drivers.
- Juergen Keils audio drivers for Solaris.
- Includes a Grub splash screen derived from one of Chandans excellent collection.
Includes the following GNU/OSS software:
- gcc 3.4, GNU assembler (from binutils)
- Bison, Flex
- GNU Gettext, Gmake, Gtar
- Gzip and Bzip2
- Less
- Layer 4 Traceroute (an enhanced traceroute utility)
- Libiconv, Libpcap, Ncurses
- Lynx, Vim, Wget
- Top process status utility
- GNU Screen (Terminal Multiplexor)
- The aperture driver which is required to eventually get X11 working on this distro.
- Perl 5.8.4 which comes default with OpenSolaris
- Fontconfig, Freetype2, Expat: These will be required by Xorg X11 server.
- The FreeBSD math library ported to work with OpenSolaris. This is essential for a self-hosting OpenSolaris distribution
