slab 4.09-14b

SLab is a digital audio recording software suite for UNIX platforms. more>>
SLab is a digital audio recording software suite for UNIX platforms. It is currently supported on most versions of Linux, and FreeBSD. SLab is a multitrack harddisk recording application, a set of tools to record music to disk on a PC platform (running Unix of course). The application is software only, it just requires a reasonable PC with a soundcard. There are some limitations on soundcard support, and obviously some limits on track counts based on CPU/disk performance.

The name is pronounced either "slab" as a single word, or "ess-lab", whichever you prefer. I would have given it some groovy name, but most of the names I would like are already in use! "Yet another audio recording tool" would perhaps be a good alternative, since there are many available.

SLab consists of a mixing desk, tape deck, wave editor, and a few other auxilliary tools including digital effects processing.

With SLab you have the possibility to record up to 8 channels of music simultaneously (probably more in future versions).

Open Source Electronic Lab Notebook 1.1

Open Source Electronic Lab Notebook 1.1

Open Source Electronic Lab Notebook is an electronic lab notebook. more>>
OS-ELN is an Electronic Lab Notebook which you can freely download and use.
OS-ELN is deliberately simple; fully-fledged commercial ELNs are necessarily much more complex. As such, OS-ELN is a good teaching tool and a place for experimentation with ELN technology and concepts.
Users can sign up for an ELN, within which they can record their experiments, and you can attach files as part of an experiment. With knowledge of Zope, you can expand the system as you wish, for example to change the look & feel, to access relational databases, add other content to experiments, etc.
Version restrictions:
- You would be very unwise to use OS-ELN to document work that may lead to a patent claim (or defend against a patent infringement action) or for work that may be regulated (by, for example, the FDA). You should either buy a commerical ELN or use paper.

localscan 2.1

localscan 2.1

localscan is a frontend to nmap. more>>
localscan is a frontend to nmap. The purpose of localscan is to make the lives of administrators easier. At its heart, localscan is simply a list of "ignore this host/port combo" rules designed to reduce the amount of useless information returned by nmap scans of a given subnet.

I administer a largish lab at a largish higher educational institution (which shall remain unnamed!), and about three months ago I found it necessary to start running a portscanner against my subnet every so often. Now, while it was relatively easy to cobble something together that would do this and mail the results of the scan to me, I found that my inbox was being filled with inanity. Lots of valid services were present, and the few invalid services were hard to pick out. So I put together a quick-and-dirty filter and released it internally as local_scan 1.0a. Not surprisingly, no one used it. This is because I was (am!) still learning Perl.

After the initial disappointment, I sat down and started rewriting, with the end result being what you just downloaded. :) Localscan 2.0 is much easier for the non-Perl person (yes, there are a few of them out there) to use. All the "interesting" user-configurable parameters are now contained in a plaintext external datafile called localscan.conf.

You should have received four files in this tarball.

This readme file
A "quickstart" guide
Localscan.pl, the actual script
Make_conf.pl, a script to generate the localscan.conf file

aPong

aPong

aPong is a Pong game written in x86 Assembly language. more>>
aPong is a Pong game written in x86 Assembly language.
As I run Linux on my own machine, I dont do a lot with intel syntax. I needed to learn this for a lab. After scouring the internet for a few hours, I came across NASM. This looked as though Id be able to just code in this, take it into the Windows computers and have it just work.
No such luck. So, thats beside the point now, but I wrote this in order to get to grips with the syntax (which turned out to be the wrong one.)
Main features:
- 2-player
The left one uses Q/A to go up/down, the second one uses P/L. Escape to quit.
- Uses SDL from assembly language
I quite like SDL. I quite dislike x86. I already know SDL. It was already a learning exercise, I wasnt going to go off learning xlib or something at the same time. This gave me a way to quickly get the code written.
- Avoids the use of frame pointers
Why do you need frame pointers if youre not going to be running it in a debugger. Its not difficult to keep track of the stack frame if youre writing it yourself. You dont need to keep moving the stack pointer inside a function, just once at the start and once at the end. Then all you need is to take offsets from esp (so long as you remember how big the frame is at the time.)
This really gets on my nerves. People dont seem to realise the amount of overhead (in terms of lost cycles) that a function call has. To say global variables are BAD is just plain wrong. Sure, it can lend itself to abuse, but thats like saying you shouldnt code in C or use UNIX because they dont hold your hand.
- The input system isnt great.
Because I was trying to keep the code size down, I went the way of using SDL_GetKeyState and SDL_PumpEvents. These mean that if the key is not actually down at the time of the PumpEvents call, it drops the keypress. (if you want to see how you should do it, look at the events system in STP

LinuxBIOS 2-2742

LinuxBIOS 2-2742

LinuxBIOS is a project that aims to replace the normal BIOS with a little bit of hardware initialization. more>>
LinuxBIOS project is aimed at replacing the normal BIOS with a little bit of hardware initialization and a compressed Linux kernel that can be booted from a cold start.
The project was started as part of clustering research work in the Cluster Reseach Lab at the Advanced Computing Laboratory at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The primary motivation behind the project was the desire to have the operating system gain control of a cluster node from power on.
Other beneficial consequences of using LinuxBIOS include needing only two working motors to boot (cpu fan and power supply), fast boot times (current fastest is 3 seconds), and freedom from proprietary (buggy) BIOS code, to name a few.
These secondary benefits are numerous and have helped gain support from many vendors in both the high performance computing as well as embedded computing markets.
Note that, on newer systems, there need be no moving parts at all. At LANL, we are building a new no moving parts 16-node cluster to demonstrate this capability. The cluster will fit in a toolbox, run from a battery, boot in 10 seconds, and be controlled from your laptop (which, sadly, will still have a few moving parts).
Enhancements:
- This release adds preliminary support for M50FW040, M29W040B, M50FLW040A, M50FLW040B, M50FLW080A, M50FLW080B, M50FW080, M50FW016, M50LPW116, and M29W010B (all by ST) to flash ROM.

Xlockmore 5.22.1 Alpha

Xlockmore 5.22.1 Alpha

xlockmore is an enhanced version of xlock. more>>
Xlockmore is an enhanced version of xlock. Xlockmore incorporates several new commandline options, which allow you to run it in a window, in the root window, in a different size/location, change the size of the iconified window, to install a new colormap and delay locking for use with xautolock.

xlock(more) is more than just the modes, there are a few password mechanisms and public lab switches that can be chosen to be compiled in. I eagerly accept patches and improvements and ports for xlock, I would rather get a new interesting modes.

Many people have helped me maintain this over the years, most notably Jouk (Jacob) Jansen and Tom Schmidt. There are 100+ modes so I am sorry if I neglected to mention a personal favorite.

gggl 0.0.4

gggl 0.0.4

gggl is a graph-based image processing library for interconnecting operations (ops) shared objects. more>>
gggl is an image processing library inspired by GEGL, this library is designed to do what gegl will be designed to handle; image processing operations catering for Gimp and many other applications.
gggl is a version of GEGL that tries to be as simple as possible, but not simpler.
Applications using gggl should have small problems being ported to use GEGL, especially if they use gggl through a wrapping layer, like a language binding (ruby), or a wrapper providing higher level abstractions like oxide.
Main features:
DAG based data model
plug-ins operate in pixel representation of own choice
- 8bit, 16bit or floating point
- sRGB, sRGB+alpha, sRGB + premultiplied alpha, ycbcr, xyz or lab
designed to be call compatible with GEGL
small host and plug-in APIs
a growing set of floating point based rgb operations already exist
few dependencies (ANSI C + libdl)
The API exposed by gggl and GEGL boils down to manipulation of a DAG (Directed Acyclic Graph), through the same calling semantics it should be possible to utilize hardware acceleration for all, none or portions of the processing.
Through mlt gggl can probably already do hardware based decompression of video.
Enhancements:
- gggl/Makefile: build fixes
- gggl/gggl.h: reordering of functions according to order of importance.
