La is a Lossless Audio compression program. more>>
La is a Lossless Audio compression program. That is, in contrast to formats such as mp3, La program reduces the size of music without affecting the quality, as the uncompressed signal is exactly identical to the original.
However, the compression ratio is thus far lower than that for .mp3 files - you can expect around 50%, worse for heavier music and better for classical etc.
Main features:
- Windows frontend (which also supports many other codecs).
- Best compression currently available (see comparison).
- Versions for both Windows and Linux OSes.
- Winamp, foobar2000 and Xmms plugins for playback.
How well does it work?
The compression ratios of La depend on the type of music file being compressed, but the compression size will generally range between 40% - 70% of the original.
This ratio is of course modest in comparison with lossy formats such as .mp3, however La does (at time of writing) compress around 1.5% better on average than any other lossless compression programs.
Speedwise, La runs around 1.5x real time on my Pentium III-1000. This is quite slow relative to comparable compressors, however corresondingly the compression rate is slightly higher than the others. Note that this version contains no fast mode or such like - this, along with many other features, will have to wait till future releases.
Installation:
Unpack the archive (tar -xjf la04.tar.bz2) into an appropriate place.
La should run fine straight away (note, I have to type ./la on my system because la appears to be an already existing command).
To install the xmms plugin, simply copy libla.so to the xmms input plugin directory (type xmms-config --input-plugin-dir to find out where this is).
The xmms plugin should basically work, and seeking should be possible. The visualisation should also work. However, it still tends to crash when you give it corrupt files (rather than nicely skipping over them as it should do).
The version of xmms I use is 1.2.6. Please let me know if the plugin works or doesnt work for you with other versions.
Usage Instructions
la [flags] input-filename [output-filename]
Flags
-high - high compression mode - slower, but better compression
-overwrite - automatically overwrite existing files
-cin - when decoding/encoding, use console input
-cout - when decoding, use console output
-cinout - when decoding, use console input+output
-noseek - disable seeking (improves compression slightly)
-nohead - when decoding, disables outputting of .wav headers
Example usage:
la foo.wav - compress foo.wav to foo.la
la foo.la - decompress foo.la to foo.wav
la -overwrite *.wav - compress all .wavs in directory, replacing
any existing .la files.
cat foo.la | la -cinout > foo.wav - decompress foo.la to foo.wav
When using wildcards, only the input name can be specified. The output names will be automatically determined as the original name with the new extension.
Enhancements:
- Aside from some very small bug fixes, the main point of this release is that the core codec is now contained in a .dll, which can be used using the included API. The source code to the plugins and command-line program is also included to serve as examples for using the codec, and also in the hope that some help can be obtained in maintaining the plugins and in creating new ones.
- Note that as the .dll is something Windows-specific this is just a Windows update. As with all minor version changes, this version is forwards and backwards compatible with all 0.4x versions.

Los Alamos Message Passing Interface 1.5.16 RC1

Los Alamos Message Passing Interface 1.5.16 RC1

Los Alamos Message Passing Interface is an implementation of the Message Passing Interface (MPI). more>>
Los Alamos Message Passing Interface is an implementation of the Message Passing Interface (MPI) motivated by a growing need for fault tolerance at the software level in large high-performance computing (HPC) systems.
This need is caused by the vast number of components present in modern HPC systems, particularly clusters. The individual components -- processors, memory modules, network interface cards (NICs), etc. -- are typically manufactured to tolerances adequate for small or desktop systems.
When aggregated into a large HPC system, however, system-wide error rates may be too great to successfully complete a long application run. For example, a network device may have an error rate which is perfectly acceptable for a desktop system, but not in a cluster of thousands of nodes, which must run error free for many hours or even days to complete a scientific calculation.
LA-MPI has two primary goals: network fault tolerance and high performance.
Network fault tolerance is acheived by implementing a highly efficient checksum/retransmission protocol. The integrity of delivered data is (optionally) verified at the user-level using a checksum or CRC. Data that is corrupt (or never delivered) is retransmitted.
As for high performance, LA-MPIs lightweight checksum/retransmission protocol allows us to achieve low latency messaging. Furthermore, the flexible approach taken to the use of redundant data paths in a network-device-rich system leads to high network bandwidth since different messages and/or message-fragments can be sent in parallel along different paths. Also, since LA-MPI is developed for use on the the large systems at Los Alamos National Laboratory we have verified that LA-MPI is scalable to over 3,500 processes.
An alternative solution to the network fault tolerance problem is to use the TCP/IP protocol. We believe, however, that this protocol -- developed to handle unreliable, inhomogeneous and oversubscribed networks -- performs poorly and is overly complex for HPC system messaging, and that LA-MPIs lightweight checksum/retransmission protocol is a more appropriate choice.
Main features:
- Standard compliant (MPI version 1.2 integrated with ROMIO for MPI-IO)
- Highly portable
- Open source (LGPL)
- Thread safe
- Optimized for SMP systems, including NUMA architectures
- Network fault tolerant (data integrity checked at user level)
- Message-fragment striping across multiple network devices
Enhancements:
- Namespace conflicts have been fixed.
- Error detection and handling of fragments has been improved.
- Bugs in memory barriers and spinlocks for x86 and x86_64 architectures have been fixed.
- Profiling and backtracing support have been added.
- Asynchronous I/O has been disabled by default as a workaround for problems with some filesystems.
- Minor timeout bugs have been fixed.

L2P 1.1

L2P 1.1

L2P creates PNG images from LaTeX math expressions. more>>
L2P creates PNG images of mathematical expressions formatted in LaTeX. While it can convert a whole LaTeX document, it is designed to easily generate images from just a fragment of LaTeX code.

Download l2p here, or read the documentation. L2P depends on other software: latex, dvips, and convert. The last one is from the ImageMagick graphics toolset.

If you already work with LaTeX on a modern Unix or Linux system, you probably already have all of that installed.

EXAMPLES:

* l2p -i $4x^2-7=cos{2 pi x}$ -o eqn4.png

Produce a PNG image, named eqn4.png, of the equation described by the LaTeX expression $4x^2 - 7 = cos{2 pi x}$.

* l2p -o big_equation.png big_hairy_equation

Produce a PNG image, called big_equation.png, from the LaTeX expression contained in the file big_hairy_equation (specifically, it contains $x=2$.) Note that this file is NOT a full LaTeX document - see the -F option for that.

* l2p -d 250 -i $
abla cdot mathbf{D} =
ho$

Produce a PNG image from the LaTeX code given with the -i argument (which happens to be one of Maxwells equations), at 250 dots per inch. Since we did not specify an output file name with the -o option, the image will be eqn.png (the default).

* l2p -p amssymb -i $mho$ -o mho.png

Produce a PNG image of the Mho symbol (an upside-down capital omega), saving the image in the file mho.png. We include the amssymb package, which defines that symbol.

OPTIONS:

-i "$latex$"
Argument is an equation/expression in (La)TeX format. In most cases, you will want to enclose the argument in quotes to protect it from shell expansion.

-b "rrggbb"
Background color. There are several ways to specify the color. See the section "COLORS", below, for details.

-d dpi
Pixel density at which the equation is rendered, in dots per inch (default 300).

An image with a DPI of 600 will have twice as many pixels in each of the x and y directions than an image with a DPI of 300. The effect is different in the normal context of printing, where a higher DPI will leave the text with the same physical size, but with a finer resolution. This is because the physical size of a pixel is not really variable; so to have double the resolution, a symbol in an image must be double the size.

-f "rrggbb"
Foreground color. There are several ways to specify the color. See the section "COLORS", below, for details.

-h Show a help summary.

-o output.png
Name of output file. Default is eqn.png

-p packagename[,packagename2[,...]]]
Use additional LaTeX/TeX packages. You can specify several, separated by commas.

-C Suppress automatic removal (cleanup) of temporary files. This will be useful if something goes wrong, or if you want to use the intermediate DVI or Postscript renditions. l2p will tell you which directory contains these files.

-F Supplied expression is a full LaTeX document, rather than just an expression fragment. Negates the -f, -b, -p and -T options.

Note: l2p currently only converts full LaTeX documents that are relatively simple: only one page in length, and with no external dependencies (such as included graphics). If you need to convert a more complex document, you can generate a DVI file with latex like normal, then convert the DVI into a series of PNG images using convert from the ImageMagick distribution. See convert(1), or < http://imagemagick.org/script/convert.php > for more information.

-T Create an image with a transparent background.

-V Show version information.

kfile_raw_patch package contains a patch against kdegraphics-3.5.5 enabling thumbnail images and exif meta data for raw images.

Works also for kdegraphics-3.5.6 and 3.5.7.

The plugin uses code from libkexiv2 and parts from rawimage.

Installation:

cd kdegraphics-3.5.5
patch -i kdegraphics-raw-exiv2-3.5.5-2.patch -p1
./configure
cd kfile-plugins/raw
make
cp .libs/kfile_raw.so .libs/kfile_raw.la .libs/rawimagethumbnail.so .libs/rawimagethumbnail.la /usr/kde/3.5/lib/kde3
cp kfile_raw.desktop rawimagethumbnail.desktop /usr/kde/3.5/share/services

To have translated meta tags, copy /usr/kde/3.5/share/locale/[lng]/LC_MESSAGES/kfile_jpeg.mo to kfile_raw.mo

Finally youll need to run "kbuildsycoca" and restart konqueror.

On Gentoo, this patch can also simply be included in a portage overlay.
